Effect Of P, K, And Lime On Growth, Composition, And P Absorption By Merion Kentucky Bluegrass, T. L. Watschke, D. V. Waddington, David J. Wehner, C. L. Forth Sep 1977

Effect Of P, K, And Lime On Growth, Composition, And P Absorption By Merion Kentucky Bluegrass, T. L. Watschke, D. V. Waddington, David J. Wehner, C. L. Forth

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

Information is needed concerning the effects of different soil fertility levels on the activity of turfgrass roots in that part of the soil profile sampled for routine soil tests. In Pennsylvania, a sampling depth of 5 to 7.5 cm is suggested for established turf. A study was conducted on 'Merion' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) to determine relationships among lime, phosphorus, and potassium applications; soil test results; foliar growth and elemental analysis; and root activity as determined by 32P uptake from three soil depths. In the field, soil pH values were 5.8 and 7.0, P ranged from 13 …

Boron Fertilization Of Corn In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock, Kenneth L. Wells, H. F. Miiller Sep 1977

Boron Fertilization Of Corn In Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock, Kenneth L. Wells, H. F. Miiller

Agronomy Notes

The need for use of boron (B) for alfalfa production has been recognized for many years in Kentucky and is presently recommended for general use as an annual topdressing on alfalfa fields. Use of B is also recommended in Kentucky for red clover fields which are to be harvested for seed. In recent years, there has been interest in use of fertilizer B for good corn production in Kentucky. Plant available B is greatly affected by soil pH and decreases with increasing soil pH. Because of this, some states recommend use of B on corn grown on soils with a …

Comparison Of Coyote And Coyote × Dog Hybrid Food Habits In Southeastern Nebraska, Brian R. Mahan Sep 1977

Comparison Of Coyote And Coyote × Dog Hybrid Food Habits In Southeastern Nebraska, Brian R. Mahan

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The recent taxonomic study by Mahan et al. (1978) documented the occurrence of coyote (Canis latrans) x dog (c. familiaris) hybrids in Nebraska. This study, and those by Freeman (1976) in Oklahoma and Gipson et al. (1974) in Arkansas show coyote x dog hybrids, though not abundant, to be numerous in some areas. The purpose of the present study was to compare the stomach contents of coyote x dog hybrids collected by Mahan et al. (1978) from southeastern Nebraska with those of contemporary coyotes.

Stomachs of 12 coyote x dog hybrids and 16 coyotes collected November 1975 …

An Evaluation Of Narrow Hybrid Zones In Vertebrates, William S. Moore Sep 1977

An Evaluation Of Narrow Hybrid Zones In Vertebrates, William S. Moore

Biological Sciences Faculty Research Publications

A review of the literature on vertebrate hybridization reveals the existence of a number of narrow hybrid zones. Three hypotheses have been suggested to explain the occurrence of these zones. The ephemeral-zone hypothesis states that hybridization will end either in speciation or fusion of the hybridizing taxa by means of introgression. The dynamic-equilibrium hypothesis allows the possibility that narrow hybrid zones might be stable: where hybrids are confined to a small area by steep selection gradients, "crystallization" of an antihybridization mechanism might be prevented by naive immigrants from the parental populations even though hybrids are selected against. The hybrid-superiority hypothesis …

Chemothalamolysis In The Treatment Of Hemiballismus — Simplified Knighton's Technique, Salvador Gonzalez-Cornejo

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Three cases are reported in which the author used Knighton's simplified technique to make lesions in the ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus. This controlled the involuntary movements of hemiballismus. One patient died of a myocardial infarction due to marked hypotension and an episode of postoperative bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Milestones Leading To The Development Of Spinal Surgery In The Late 19th Century, D. J. Canale Sep 1977

Milestones Leading To The Development Of Spinal Surgery In The Late 19th Century, D. J. Canale

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The significant amount of spinal surgery in neurological practice today prompts a survey of the historical development of surgical treatment of disorders of the spine. Any discussion tracing the events leading to modern surgical practice must necessarily contain the contributions of men of medicine through the centuries; therefore, neurosurgery as practiced today is greatly indebted to the efforts of courageous and dedicated men in world history extending to the early Egyptians. Overcoming seemingly insurmountable barriers of prejudice bred of ignorance, societal customs, and religious tradition, these fathers of medicine have contributed the knowledge and experimental evidence which form the cornerstone …

Subarachnoid And Intracerebral Hemorrhage Due To The Rupture Of An Arteriovenous Malformation And Aneurysm In The Same Patient. Report Of Two Cases, F. Gomez-Mendez

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Two cases are reported of coexistent intracranial aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation. Both lesions ruptured within one week in one patient and within three months in the other. The rarity of such occurrences is discussed and the surgical operative procedures used are described. One patient is doing well except for some weakness of the right leg and mild dysphasia. The second patient died three months postoperatively, probably because of rupture of the aneurysm. No autopsy was obtained.

Selective Cerebral Arteriography And The Cat Scan In Acoustic Tumors, Donald C. Austin Sep 1977

Selective Cerebral Arteriography And The Cat Scan In Acoustic Tumors, Donald C. Austin

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Increasing experience with selective cerebral arteriography in the diagnostic evaluation of acoustic tumors has led to a more rational determination of the proper surgical approach to the lesion. It also predicts the necessity for staging the surgical procedure, reduces the potential for intraoperative complications and rules out other types of angle lesions and the possible necessity for performing a preoperative, concomitant or postoperative shunting procedure. The CAT scan has added an important screening procedure in predicting the presence of an angle lesion, determining the need for further diagnostic studies and evaluating the possible presence or absence of a recurrent tumor …

Progressive Ataxia And Hearing Loss (Left) In A 23-Year-Old Man. A Clinico-Pathological Conference, Jose Bebin

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

As part of the scientific program honoring Robert 5. Knighton, M.D., a clinical pathological conference was conducted by Dr. Jose Bebin. Following presentation of the protocol, comments from several discussants included diagnoses of a primary neoplastic process in the brain stem, angioma of the pons, neoplasm or cyst of the posterior fossa, possible angioma on the left side of the brain stem, a viral cerebellitis, an ependymoma, or a medulloblastoma. Together with the case presentation the author offers autopsy findings and a discussion and review of the literature.

The Rear-End Collision — Soma Or Psyché?, Hugh A. Clarke Sep 1977

The Rear-End Collision — Soma Or Psyché?, Hugh A. Clarke

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Rear-end collisions represent 25% of all vehicular accidents. On occasion, the patients become more disabled by the diagnosis of "whiplash" than by the injury. During the past three years, 100 patients were referred for neurological examination and disposition following rear-end collisions. Appropriate neurological testing, included the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Test (MMPI). A minority of these patients required hospitalization. The incidence of disc rupture requiring surgical decompression was less than 1%. The psychological tests were of limited aid in helping the physician to treat this group of patients. The middle-aged patient without concomitant arthritic change, having secured conservative treatment in …

Modern Invertebrate Footprints Compared With Fossil Footprints From The Coconino Sandstone (Permian), Marilyn A. Emtage

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Laboratory studies of trackways of the crayfish, Cambarus clarkii were conducted, and the footprints compared with fossil invertebrate footprints (Paleohelcura sp.) of the Permian Coconino sandstone of Northern Arizona, and similar footprints of other sandstone. Fine grained sand (similar to that composing the Coconino sandstone) was placed in a plexiglass tank to form slopes of various angles. The crayfish walked up and down slopes of 10°± 3°, 20°± 2°, 25° and on level sand, and their trackways were photographed. Trackways were produced on wet sand and underwater sand, but the animals would not walk on dry sand. Clear individual impressions …

Manganese Fertilization Of Soybeans, Lloyd W. Murdock, Harold F. Miller, Doyle Peaslee, Wilbur Frye Sep 1977

Manganese Fertilization Of Soybeans, Lloyd W. Murdock, Harold F. Miller, Doyle Peaslee, Wilbur Frye

Agronomy Notes

Only a small quantity of manganese is essential for plant growth however under certain soil conditions even this is not available to the plant. Depending on severity, manganese deficiency will retard plant growth and may drastically decrease yields. A deficiency of manganese will affect the photosynthesis system of the plant. The visual symptoms of a manganese deficiency on soybeans is interveinal chlorosis of the leaves. The veins remains green until the chlorosis nears the white stage then they also lose their color.

Effect Of Radiation And Corynebacterium Parvum On The In Vivo Elimination Of Friend Virus-Induced Leukemia In C57bl/6 Mice, Betty A. Wu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Administration of Corynebacterium parvum in combination with localized irradiation has been shown to be more efficient than radiation treatment alone in prolonging the survival time of methylethrane induced tumor in C3H mice. Fractionated low dose total body irradiation has been demonstrated to be a promising therapy for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the combined treatment of total body irradiation and C. parvum on Friend virus induced leukemia in C57BL/6 mice. 125I-labeled FBL-3 cells were injected intraperitoneally into mice. Intraperitoneal injection of C. parvum and and single dose total …

The Water-Soluble Contrast Medium Lumbar Myelogram And Its Surgical Correlations, Henri C. Labasse Sep 1977

The Water-Soluble Contrast Medium Lumbar Myelogram And Its Surgical Correlations, Henri C. Labasse

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The water-soluble contrast medium lumbar myelogram is a very helpful tool in the diagnosis of herniated nucleus pulposus (EfNP) in patients who suffer unilateral root pain of mechanical course. One can often make the differential diagnosis between a ruptured disc and a protruding disc. Unless the disc fragment lies way out in the intervertebral foramen, the myelogram will show some kind of anomaly. Therefore, fewer exploratory operations will be performed on patients having normal myelograms. Metrisamide, a newcomer among the water-soluble contrast media, is nontoxic for the spinal cord. Therefore, if the usual myelogram is normal and one fears a …

Traumatic Third Ventricular Hematoma, E. Malcolm Field Sep 1977

Traumatic Third Ventricular Hematoma, E. Malcolm Field

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The author postulates a rare syndrome which should be considered when craniocerebral trauma is followed by a lucid interval and then rapid deterioration of midbrain function. The diagnosis was made on the basis of an irregular mass in the floor of the third ventricle and bloody ventricular fluid. Today's availability of CAT scanning would provide a quicker and more certain diagnosis than was possible for the two cases reported, the author states.

The Treatment Of Chronic Pain: Program Of The Community Hospital Rehabilitation Center For Pain, Karl L. Manders Sep 1977

The Treatment Of Chronic Pain: Program Of The Community Hospital Rehabilitation Center For Pain, Karl L. Manders

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

After approximately three years' experience, the use of multiple modality treatment appears to be the most advantageous for individuals who have not responded satisfactorily to routine medical and surgical treatment. Alleviation of pain, discontinuance of narcotic medication, and return to both social and vocational activities has been accomplished in most patients of this center for the treatment of chronic pain.
