Laboratory germinated seedlings of Liquidambar styraciflua L., sweet gum, from Barren County, Kentucky, subjected to a flooding or inundation test were shown to respond in significantly different ways than did the controls. Plants with root systems standing in water showed a much shorter period of non-dormancy than plants that were not subjected to submergence when both were grown under long day, warm temperature conditions in growth chambers. There was no evidence of transfer of a growth retardant or dormin-like compound in water transferred from plants grown under short day (long night) conditions to plants with roots submerged under long day …

Seasonal Abundance & Diversity Of Fishes At Three Stations On The Middle Fork Of Drake's Creek, Warren & Allen Counties, Kentucky, David Bell

A total of 7,485 fish, representing 49 species, 25 genera, and 11 families, were electroshocked from three stations on the Middle Fork of Drake's Creek during the period January, 1972 through January, 1973. Community structure was influenced by seasonal changes in both numbers of species and numbers of individuals. The number of species per collection was at its highest, at all stations, during the month of September. The total number of species and individuals collected at each station progressively increased toward the upstream areas. Experiments were conducted to determine if an hourglass model is the mechanism whereby photoperiodic time is measured by the crayfish, Orconectes immunis. Two experiments were conducted in which there were three series of treatments. Series I and II were T experiments in which T was the total length of the light-dark cycle. In Series I the light phase of the cycle was held at 16 hours with varied lengths of darkness (LD 16:2, T 18; LD 16:8, T 24; LD 16:20, T 36; LD 16:32, T 48). Goldfish, Carassius auratus (Linnaeus), were used in the study of rates of regeneration in all possible combinations of caudal, dorsal, left pectoral, and right pectoral fin amputations. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of multiple injuries on rates of regeneration, to determine rates of regeneration in different fins, to test the hypothesis that rates of regeneration decrease from the proximal to the distal areas of a fin, and to determine the presence or absence of morphogenetic gradients in fin regeneration.

The Journal of Health, Physical Education and Recreation was subjected to a content analysis for the period 1963-1973 using subject philosophy, pedagogical style, and contributors as the content indicators. The study examines how curriculum change and subject content reflect change and ideology in the wider society. Justifications for teaching physical education have shifted from a traditional emphasis on fitness and character training to education for leisure and lifetime sports and the desirability of self-actualization via movement education. The study argues that those changes parallel a move in the requirements of the social and economic structure, from mass wage labor to …

Crete Koate^® product originally intended to be utilized for absorbing excess moisture and reducing knee abrasions of baby pigs raised in confinement, was tested as a hematinic for young pigs. Four treatments were studied: (1) T-NI, pigs receiving no iron; (2) T-IS, pigs receiving a 2 ml intramuscular injection of iron-dextran at 2 days of age; (3) T-CK, pigs raised in pens treated daily with Crete Koate; (4) T-ISCK, pics receiving an intramuscular injection of iron-dextran on day 2 whose pens received daily treatments of Crete Koate. Evaluation Of Herbicides For Suppression Of Rhizome Growth From Johnsongrass (Sorghum Halepense L.) In Corn And Soybeans, John Oakes

Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense L.) presents a serious problem in the production of corn and soybeans in Kentucky.

Various rates of the thiocarbamates, dinitroanilines, carbamates, amides, ureas, and triazines were used in association with the crops corn (Zea mays L.) and soybeans (Glycine max L.) to determine the degree of suppression on rhizomatous johnsongrass infesting the previously named crops.

Suppression was determined by selecting areas within each treated plot, counting the number of culms, then harvesting johnsongrass rhizomes. Dry weights of rhizomes were then determined as a measure of rhizome suppression.

Of all the plant nutrients, nitrogen has been subjected to the most extensive study. The amount of inorganic nitrogen in the soil is small while the quantity needed annually by crops is comparatively large. Of the macronutrients usually applied in commercial fertilizers, nitrogen seems to have the quickest and most pronounced effect on plant growth.

In applying the nitrogen fertilizer for crop use, one must be concerned with placement, form, and availability, and with keeping the fertilizer where it is placed throughout the critical part of the growing season. The nitrogen supply molded by non-leguminous plants is of extreme importance …
