The current EVs available on the market and the current level of market penetration were investigated. Advantages and disadvantages of EVs from a consumer and governmental perspective were identified. To reach this objective, the linear generator with quasi-flat linear machine structure was selected and designed using the magnetic circuit theory. In this work, we are computing the matching between 2D manifolds and 3D manifolds with temporal constraints, that is we are computing the matching among a time sequence of 2D/3D manifolds. It is solved by mapping all the manifolds to a common domain, then build their matching by composing the forward mapping and the inverse mapping. At first, we solve the matching problem between 2D manifolds with temporal constraints by using mesh-based registration method. In our work on hybrid (organic-inorganic) electronic materials (HEMs), we have developed a reasonably facile method for characterizing GUMBOS or a Group of Uniform Materials Based on Organic Salts. In addition to the versatility of traditional ionic liquids (i.e.-solubility, melting point, viscosity), NanoGUMBOS are functionalizable to exhibit properties such as fluorescence, magnetic susceptibility, and even antimicrobial activity. A single, self-assembled layer of highly uniform dielectric alumina nanoparticles improves the photovoltaic performance of organic semiconductor bulk heterojunction solar cells. The block copolymer based self-assembly approach is readily amenable to the large areas required for solar cell fabrication. A fraction of the performance gain results from incident light scattering which increases active layer absorption and photocurrent output, consistent with device simulations. The nanoparticle layer also roughens the device electrode surface, increasing contact area and improving device fill factor through more efficient charge collection

While the effect of interfacial morphology on the short circuit current (ISC) of organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) is well known, its impact on open circuit voltage (VOC) and fill-factor (FF) are less clear. Since the output power of a solar cell Pout 1/4 ISCVOCFF, such understanding is critical for designing high-performance, morphology-engineered OPVs. The question of what fraction of the total heat flow is transported by phonons with different mean-free-paths is addressed using a Landauer approach with a full dispersion description of phonons to evaluate the thermal conductivities of bulk and thin film silicon. For bulk Si, the results reproduce those of a recent molecular dynamic treatment showing that about 50% of the heat conduction is carried by phonons with a mean-free-path greater than about 1 μm. For the in-plane thermal conductivity of thin Si films, we find that about 50% of the heat is carried by phonons with mean-free-paths shorter …

Possibilities to improve the Seebeck coefficient S versus electrical conductance G trade-off of diffusive composite nano-structures are explored using an electro-thermal simulation framework based on the non-equilibrium Green’s function method for quantum electron transport and the lattice heat diffusion equation. We examine the role of the grain size d, potential barrier height UB, grain doping, and the lattice thermal conductivity jL using a one-dimensional model structure. The question of what bandstructure produces the best thermoelectric device performance is revisited from a Landauer perspective. We find that a delta-function transport distribution function (TDF) results in operation at the Mahan-Sofo upper limit for the thermoelectric figure-of-merit, ZT. We show, however, the Mahan-Sofo upper limit itself depends on the bandwidth (BW) of the dispersion, and therefore, a finite BW dispersion produces a higher ZT when the lattice thermal conductivity is finite. Including a realistic model for scattering profoundly changes the results. Instead of a narrow band, we find that a broad BW is best. The prospects of increasing ZT …

The Microwave Radiometer (MWR) on the Aquarius/SAC-D mission measures microwave radiation from earth and intervening atmosphere in terms of brightness temperature (Tb). It takes measurements in a push-broom fashion at K (23.8GHz) and Ka (36.5 GHz) band frequencies using two separate antenna systems, each producing eight antenna beams. Pre-launch knowledge of the alignment of these beams with respect to the space-craft is used to geolocate the antenna footprints on ground. As a part of MWR’s on-orbit engineering check-out, the verification of MWR’s pointing accuracy is discussed here. Several thousands of drugs are currently available on the U.S. market. A complete understanding of the safe use of drugs is not possible at the time when drug is developed or marketed. At that time, the safety information is only obtained from a few thousand people in a typical pre-marketing clinical trial. Clinical trials are not capable of detecting rare adverse drug reactions (ADRs) because of limitations in sample size and trial duration. Epilepsy is a chronic disease characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures, where seizures are described as storms of uncontrollable neuro-electrical activity within the brain. Seizures are therefore identified by observation of electrical spiking observed through electrical contacts (electrodes) placed on the scalp or the cortex above the epileptic regions. Current epilepsy research is identifying several specific molecular markers that appear at specific layers of the epilepsy-affected cortex. Hollow, polymeric, thiol-ene resorcinarene nanocapsules can act as template reaction vessels for the synthesis of gold nanoshells or spherical aggregates of gold nanoparticles depending on the reaction conditions. In this update to the 2009 year's study, the authors examine statutes that regulate, license, and enforce investigative functions in each US state. After identification and review of Private Investigator licensing requirements, the authors find that very few state statutes explicitly differentiate between Private Investigators and Digital Examiners, but do see a trend of more states making some distinction. Metal-insulator transition (MIT) phase-change materials (PCM) are material compounds that have the ability to be either conductors or insulators depending on external stimuli. A micromachined test structure for applying external electric fields across MIT wire segments was designed and fabricated. Using this novel test structure, Germanium Telluride (GeTe) and Vanadium Oxide (VOx) were successfully transitioned from a conductor to an insulator. The resistivity of the GeTe wire segments increased three to five orders of magnitude with ∼40 V applied to the parallel plates of the test structure. In this thesis, a fault detection and isolation (FDI) method is developed for aircraft engines by utilizing nonlinear adaptive estimation techniques. Engine sensor faults, actuator faults and component faults are considered under one unified framework. The fault diagnosis architecture consists of a bank of nonlinear adaptive estimators. One of them is the fault detection estimator used for fault detection, and the remaining ones are fault isolation estimators employed to determine the particular fault type/location after fault detection.
