Articles

This paper studies the phase and frequency estimation problem of single-phase grid voltagesignal in the presence of DC offset and harmonics. For this purpose, a novel parameterized linear modelof the grid voltage signal is considered where the unknown frequency of the grid is considered as theparameter. Based on the developed model, a linear observer (Luenberger type) is proposed. Then usingLyapunov stability theory, an estimator of the unknown grid frequency is developed. In order to deal with thegrid harmonics, multiple parallel observers are then proposed. The proposed technique is inspired by otherLuenberger observers already proposed in the literature. Those techniques use …

The Viability Of Organic Dyes In Luminescent Down-Shifting Layers For The Enhancement Of Si Solar Cell Efficiency, Aaron Glenn, Conor Mcloughlin, Hind Ahmed, Hoda Akbari, Subhash Chandra, Sarah Mccormack

Articles

The main energy losses in solar cells are related to spectral losses where high energy photons are not used efficiently, and energy is lost via thermalization which reduces the solar cell’s overall efficiency. A way to tackle this is to introduce a luminescent down-shifting layer (LDS) to convert these high energy photons into a lower energy bracket helping the solar cell to absorb them and thus generating a greater power output. In this paper, lumogen dye Violet 570 has been used as LDS coated films of 10μm and 60μm placed on top of Si solar cells. The dye was incorporated …

Spiking Network Optimized For Word Recognition In Noise Predicts Auditory System Hierarchy, Seyedeh F. Khatami Firoozabadi, Escabi A. Monty

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

The auditory neural code is resilient to acoustic variability and capable of recognizing sounds amongst competing sound sources, yet, the transformations enabling noise robust abilities are largely unknown. We report that a hierarchical spiking neural network (HSNN) optimized to maximize word recognition accuracy in noise and multiple talkers predicts organizational hierarchy of the ascending auditory pathway. Comparisons with data from auditory nerve, midbrain, thalamus and cortex reveals that the optimal HSSN predicts several transformations of the ascending auditory pathway including a sequential loss of temporal resolution and synchronization ability, increasing sparseness, and selectivity. The optimal organizational scheme enhances performance by …

On The Automorphisms And Isomorphisms Of Mds Matrices And Their Efficient Implementations, Muharrem Tolga Sakalli, Sedat Akleylek, Kemal Akkanat, Vincent Rijmen

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we explicitly define the automorphisms of MDS matrices over the same binary extension field. By extending this idea, we present the isomorphisms between MDS matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}$ and MDS matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{mt}}$, where $t \ge 1$ and $m>1$, which preserves the software implementation properties in view of XOR operations and table lookups of any given MDS matrix over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{m}}$. Then we propose a novel method to obtain distinct functions related to these automorphisms and isomorphisms to be used in generating isomorphic MDS matrices (new MDS matrices in view of implementation properties) using the existing ones. The …

Revised Polyhedral Conic Functions Algorithm For Supervised Classification, Gürhan Ceylan, Gürkan Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In supervised classification, obtaining nonlinear separating functions from an algorithm is crucial for prediction accuracy. This paper analyzes the polyhedral conic functions (PCF) algorithm that generates nonlinear separating functions by only solving simple subproblems. Then, a revised version of the algorithm is developed that achieves better generalization and fast training while maintaining the simplicity and high prediction accuracy of the original PCF algorithm. This is accomplished by making the following modifications to the subproblem: extension of the objective function with a regularization term, relaxation of a hard constraint set and introduction of a new error term. Experimental results show that …

This system incorporates both technical requirements and human factors that involve designers' knowledge and skills in the SMPS design domain. First, we identify the critical concepts from power management lab kits and power electronics books, and extract latent sub-skills of SMPS design using exploratory factor analysis to build the starting concept list of FCM. Second, we use factor …

Effect Of Temporal Instability Of Factors Contributing To Single-Vehicle Crash Severity--A Mixed Logit Approach, A. M. Hasibul Islam Jan 2020

Effect Of Temporal Instability Of Factors Contributing To Single-Vehicle Crash Severity--A Mixed Logit Approach, A. M. Hasibul Islam

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

This study investigates the factors associated with single-vehicle crash injury severity using five years (2014 – 2018) of crash data from Kentucky, USA, using a mixed (random-parameter) logit model. We also explore the temporal heterogeneity of the correlated factors across different times of the day. Most crash-severity models assume that the estimated parameters remain temporally stable. For instance, the effect of light conditions on crash severity may differ based on the time of the crash occurrence—noon vs. dusk. The temporal instability of the factors due to the time-of-day variation can lead to (under) overestimating the parameters that influence the development …

Exploring Faculty And Student Frameworks For Engineering Knowledge Using An Online Card Sorting Platform, Diana A. Chen, Gordon D. Hoople, Nico Ledwith, Eric Burlingame, Seth D. Bush, Gregory E. Scott

School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

In this study we investigate how faculty and students think about engineering us-ing a technique new to engineering education: card sorting. In card sorting partic-ipants sort stimuli (cards) into groups, in the process revealing how they catego-rize information. Here we examine how both engineering faculty (n=23) and first-year undergraduate students (n=62) categorize engineering scenarios. We found engineering faculty sort based on cross-disciplinary engineering activities rather than engineering disciplines. This is a surprising result as our educational frameworks are based around disciplines, and yet they are not the primary way in which faculty think. First-year students, on the other hand, showed …
