Using Mechanics Of A Double Pendulum To Maximize Sport Performance, Heston Neal Jan 2020

Using Mechanics Of A Double Pendulum To Maximize Sport Performance, Heston Neal

Bridges: A Journal of Student Research

Sports have developed over time into an entire industry from the children who grow up playing sports to the professional players that fans love to watch. Because all sports involve movements of the human body, a bio-mechanical system, these movements may be modeled with mathematics and physics. Specifically, the sports of golf, tennis, and baseball can use the concepts of a double pendulum to maximize sport performance. The double pendulum model is applied to these sports by making the arm one pendulum and the club, racquet, or bat the second pendulum. A good understanding of the mechanics of a double …

Calibration To Mitigate Near-Field Antennas Effects For A Mimo Radar Imaging System, Ha Hoang, Matthias John, Patrick Mcevoy, Max Ammann

Articles

A calibration method for a high-resolution hybrid MIMO turntable radar imaging system is presented. A line of small metal spheres is employed as a test pattern in the calibration process to measure the position shift caused by undesired antenna effects. The unwanted effects in the antenna near-field responses are analysed, modelled and significantly mitigated based on the symmetry and differences in the responses of the MIMO configuration.

Engineering, Computing & Construction Management Faculty Publications

Ecological studies indicate that impervious cover (IC) greater than approximately 5%–20% may have adverse effects on receiving-stream ecology. It is difficult to separate the effects of runoff quality from other effects of urbanization on receiving streams. This study presents the results of a numerical experiment to assess the effects of increasing IC on water quality using the Stochastic Empirical Loading and Dilution Model (SELDM). Hydrologic and physiographic variables representative of southern New England were used to simulate receiving water quality in a basin with IC ranging from 0.1% to 30%. Simulation results mirror the results of ecological studies; event mean …

Peer-Prompted Engineering Design: How Do Adolescents Interact And Strategize?, Kristin Marie Strong, Oenardi Lawanto, Amy Wilson-Lopez

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Engineering design was integrated into K–12 science education in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS Lead States, 2013), but teaching design remains a challenge for educators. Design problems are ill-defined, ill-structured, and complex problem-solving tasks. Their solutions require creativity and recursive, metacognitive processes that cannot be taught with simple algorithms. Moreover, adolescents do not demonstrate fully developed metacognitive skills because they are undergoing profound developmental changes. In this comparative case study, we explored how peer-delivered metacognitive prompts supported adolescents during a design challenge. We investigated how scripted prompts sparked reflection and stimulated design changes and identified which prompts were most …

Using Strontium Coated Clay Nanoparticles For Bone Regeneration And Other Biomedical Applications, Anusha Elumalai Jan 2020

Using Strontium Coated Clay Nanoparticles For Bone Regeneration And Other Biomedical Applications, Anusha Elumalai

Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this project is to coat halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with strontium in an ecofriendly, simple, and non-expensive process. These particles, when doped in calcium phosphate cements (CPC), are predicted to increase the osteoconductive and antibacterial properties of three dimensional (3D) printed bone scaffolds.

The purpose of the 3D printed bone scaffolds is to assume the same function as the bones they are replacing but with several additional functionalities. These biomaterials will have the ability to be resorbed as new bone is formed. Due to inherent osteogenic factors and antibiotics released from doped HNTs during the reparative process, it …

A Drift-Resilient And Degeneracy-Aware Loop Closure Detection Method For Localization And Mapping In Perceptually-Degraded Environments, Kamak Ebadi

Engineering Ph.D. Theses

Enabling fully autonomous robots capable of navigating and exploring unknown and complex environments has been at the core of robotics research for several decades. Mobile robots rely on a model of the environment for functions like manipulation, collision avoidance and path planning. In GPS-denied and unknown environments where a prior map of the environment is not available, robots need to rely on the onboard sensing to obtain locally accurate maps to operate in their local environment. A global map of an unknown environment can be constructed from fusion of local maps of temporally or spatially distributed mobile robots in the …

Influence Of Graphene Oxide And Carbon Nanotubes On The Fatigue Properties Of Silica/Styrene-Butadiene Rubber Composites Under Uniaxial And Multiaxial Cyclic Loading, Zongchao Xu, Stephen Jerrams, Hao Guo, Yanfen Zhou, Liang Jiang, Yangyang Gao, Liqun Zhang, Li Liu, Shipeng Wen

Articles

The influence of equivalent replacement of silica (SiO2) by carbon nanotubes (CNT) or graphene oxide (GO) on the microstructure, mechanical and fatigue behaviors of SiO2/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites was investigated. Results showed that the synergistic effect between CNT (or GO) and SiO2 was beneficial for the filler network and improved the mechanical properties of SBR composites. Furthermore, the introduction of CNT (or GO) led to low crack growth rates and the crack propagation tips were easy to deflection. Under multiaxial fatigue conditions, the maximum engineering stress was determined to be a reliable fatigue life predictor for SBR composites.

Enhanced Fatigue And Durability Of Carbon Black/Natural Rubber Composites Reinforced With Graphene Oxide And Carbon Nanotubes, Hao Guo, Stephen Jerrams, Zongchao Xu, Yanfen Shou, Liang Jiang, Liqun Zhang, Li Liu, Shipeng Wen

Articles

Graphene oxide (GO) sheets and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of nanometer size and offer large shape factors which are beneficial in reducing crack propagation rates of composites when used in carbon black (CB) reinforced natural rubber (NR), thereby prolonging the service lives of rubber composites. In this research, CNT-CB/NR and GO-CB/NR composites were prepared by partially replacing CB with one-dimensional CNTs and two-dimensional flaky graphene oxide GO, respectively. The results showed that the complex filler dispersion in NR matrices was improved due to the isolation effect between the different fillers. The strain-induced crystallization (SIC) ability of CB/NR was effectively enhanced …

Automated Recognition Of Facial Affect Using Deep Neural Networks, Behzad Hasani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Automated Facial Expression Recognition (FER) has been a topic of study in the field of computer vision and machine learning for decades. In spite of efforts made to improve the accuracy of FER systems, existing methods still are not generalizable and accurate enough for use in real-world applications. Many of the traditional methods use hand-crafted (a.k.a. engineered) features for representation of facial images. However, these methods often require rigorous hyper-parameter tuning to achieve favorable results.

Recently, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have shown to outperform traditional methods in visual object recognition. DNNs require huge data as well as powerful computing units …
