Development Of A 3d Computational Vocal Fold Model Optimization Tool, Austin C. Vaterlaus Jun 2020

Development Of A 3d Computational Vocal Fold Model Optimization Tool, Austin C. Vaterlaus

Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary objectives of voice research is to better understand the biomechanics of voice production and how changes in properties of the vocal folds (VFs) affect voice ability and quality. Synthetic VF models provide a way to observe how changes in geometry and material property affect voice biomechanics. This thesis seeks to evaluate an approach of using a genetic algorithm to design synthetic VF models in three ways: first, through the development of a computationally cost-effective 3D vocal fold model; second, by creating and optimizing a variation of this model; and third, by validating the approach. To reduce …

Multilock: A Document Escrow Service, Dominic Lagorio, Steven Herman

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

The objective of this project is to create a system wherein it is no one person’s responsibility to claim agency over a given file, but rather that the responsibility is distributed amongst a number of individuals who must decide as a unit to grant access to said files. There are a number of driving factors here, including removing culpability for individual involvement with the file, preventing compulsory access to files, and providing sophisticated security protocols for file access.

Biometric Authentication Via Electrocardiogram Signals, Austin Miles, Carlos Garcia

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

Biometric authentication has proven to be a reliable form of security as we have seen its continuous acceptance in multiple areas of technology. This includes facial recognition, fingerprints, gait analysis, and others. In this project, we develop a system that will provide authentication via electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. This system will employ a supervised machine learning approach to connect the various features generated by an ECG signal with the user. We will collect data using an online database. We will use this data to train the machine learning model that will be used to authenticate. Once a user is authenticated, then …

Cup-Net: Compressed Ultrafast Photography Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Matthew Parker Jun 2020

Cup-Net: Compressed Ultrafast Photography Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Matthew Parker

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) is a cutting-edge imaging technique that uses a variation of the traditional streak camera to obtain video at 100 billion frames per second with a single exposure. In order to achieve this level of temporal detail, CUP leverages compressed sensing (CS). Compressed sensing theory states that a compressed representation of an image can be directly acquired using a non-adaptive measurement matrix so long as the encoding matrix follows certain properties such as restrictive isometry and incoherence. This compressed representation of the original scene can later be reconstructed back into the original form. CUP applies CS by …

A Low Resource Instrumentation Package For Thermal Ion Sensors, Ruth Nordhoff Jun 2020

A Low Resource Instrumentation Package For Thermal Ion Sensors, Ruth Nordhoff

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

This thesis details the redesign of a reproducible, low-resource instrumentation package for deployment on multipoint sensorcraft arrays. Distributed arrays of sensors allow for the collection of simultaneous multipoint data. This instrumentation package provides power, digitization, timing and telemetry for two suborbital auroral thermal ion sensors. This thesis addressed limitations of a previous design, including measurement synchronization, external interfaces, and customizability. Fabrication and integration procedures developed for the redesigned package were implemented throughout the fabrication of 29 devices built for NASA sounding rockets. Results are presented from the 2019 launch of Sub-Tec 8. Recommendations are made for future design iterations.

Through computing shares by XOR operation and dealing with recovery image, the secret image was recovered. The experimental results show that the scheme on the basis of keeping the simplicity in the reconstruction phase of visual cryptography can realize the secret image perfect recovery with low pixel expansion for price. Each participant only needs to carry a share …

Online Identification And Simulation Of Multiple Model Based On Minimum Entropy Clustering, Xiaopeng Zhao, Yongchun Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: An online identification algorithm for multiple model based on minimum entropy clustering was investigated. The number of local models and corresponding weights was calculated by the entropy based fuzzy subtractive clustering approach, and the regularity degree of the local system was considered along with the clustering process. Parameters of local models could be estimated online by the weighted recursive least square method. The waste heat recovery Organic Rankine Cycles system was used to demonstrate the algorithm. The result shows the identified multi-model not only can reach an accuracy and reliability identification result, but also has a stronger self-adaptability …

The fraction of condensed counterions (fc) were quantified in nanostructured block copolymer electrolyte (BCE) and random copolymer electrolyte (RCE) thin films with new and established experimental techniques. The transition between the osmotic-controlled regime and condensation-controlled regime in BCEs and RCEs was identified using solution uptake measurements via a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and environmental grazing incidence small-angle x-ray scattering (GI-SAXS). The activity coefficients of ions in thin film were quantified experimentally and these values matched predictions from Manning’s Theory …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Based on Zwart-Gerber-Belamri cavitation model, a numerical calculation method of cavitating flow of water-exit missile with complex configuration was proposed. The influence of velocity of water-exit and angle of attack to cavitation of parts of missile was analyzed. The simulation results showed that in the beginning of water-exit course, body-attached bubble quickly grew due to reduction of cavitation number. After that, the effect of bubble break-off and oscillation became more obvious. In water-exit course of zero angle of attack, the length and thickness of bubble of shoulder increased linearly with velocity. The ability of the protrusion to induce …

Performance Testing Of Aero-Naut Camfolding Propellers, Or D. Dantsker, Robert W. Deters, Marco Caccamo, Michael S. Selig

Publications

The increase in popularity of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been driven by their use in civilian, education, government, and military applications. However, limited on-board energy storage significantly limits flight time and ultimately usability. The propulsion system plays a critical part in the overall energy consumption of the UAV; therefore, it is necessary to determine the most optimal combination of possible propulsion system components for a given mission profile, i.e. propellers, motors, and electronic speed controllers (ESC). Hundreds of options are available for the different components with little performance specifications available for most of them. By examining a variety of …

Numerical Method For Rapid Aerostructural Design And Optimization, Jeffrey D. Taylor, Douglas F. Hunsaker Jun 2020

Numerical Method For Rapid Aerostructural Design And Optimization, Jeffrey D. Taylor, Douglas F. Hunsaker

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

During early phases of wing design, analytic and low-fidelity methods are often used to identify promising design concepts. In many cases, solutions obtained using these methods provide intuition about the design space that is not easily obtained using higher-fidelity methods. This is especially true for aerostructural design. However, many analytic and low-fidelity aerostructural solutions are limited in application to wings with specific planforms and weight distributions. Here, a numerical method for minimizing induced drag with structural constraints is presented that uses approximations that apply to wings with arbitrary planforms and weight distributions. The method is applied to the NASA Ikhana …
