Models For Data Analysis In Accelerated Reliability Growth, Cesar Alexander Ruiz Torres Jul 2020

Models For Data Analysis In Accelerated Reliability Growth, Cesar Alexander Ruiz Torres

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work develops new methodologies for analyzing accelerated testing data in the context of a reliability growth program for a complex multi-component system. Each component has multiple failure modes and the growth program consists of multiple test-fix stages with corrective actions applied at the end of each stage. The first group of methods considers time-to-failure data and test covariates for predicting the final reliability of the system. The time-to-failure of each failure mode is assumed to follow a Weibull distribution with rate parameter proportional to an acceleration factor. Acceleration factors are specific to each failure mode and test covariates. We …

Machine Tool Communication (Mtcomm) Method And Its Applications In A Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Cloud, S M Nahian Al Sunny

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The integration of cyber-physical systems and cloud manufacturing has the potential to revolutionize existing manufacturing systems by enabling better accessibility, agility, and efficiency. To achieve this, it is necessary to establish a communication method of manufacturing services over the Internet to access and manage physical machines from cloud applications. Most of the existing industrial automation protocols utilize Ethernet based Local Area Network (LAN) and are not designed specifically for Internet enabled data transmission. Recently MTConnect has been gaining popularity as a standard for monitoring status of machine tools through RESTful web services and an XML based messaging structure, but it …

Dynamic Modeling And Optimal Design For Net Zero Energy Houses Including Hybrid Electric And Thermal Energy Storage, Huangjie Gong, Vandana Rallabandi, Dan M. Ionel, Donald Colliver, Shaun Duerr, Cristinel Ababei Jul 2020

Dynamic Modeling And Optimal Design For Net Zero Energy Houses Including Hybrid Electric And Thermal Energy Storage, Huangjie Gong, Vandana Rallabandi, Dan M. Ionel, Donald Colliver, Shaun Duerr, Cristinel Ababei

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Net zero energy (NZE) houses purchase zero net metered electricity from the grid over a year. Technical challenges brought forth by NZE homes are related to the intermittent nature of solar generation, and are due to the fact that peak solar generation and load are not coincident. This leads to a large rate of change of load, and in case of high PV penetration communities, often requires the installation of gas power plants to service this variability. This article proposes a hybrid energy storage system including batteries and a variable power electric water heater which enables the NZE homes to …

The Neural Foundations Of Handedness: Insights From A Rare Case Of Deafferentation, S.A.L. Jayasinghe, F. R. Sarlegna, Robert A. Scheidt, R. L. Sainburg Jul 2020

The Neural Foundations Of Handedness: Insights From A Rare Case Of Deafferentation, S.A.L. Jayasinghe, F. R. Sarlegna, Robert A. Scheidt, R. L. Sainburg

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The role of proprioceptive feedback on motor lateralization remains unclear. We asked whether motor lateralization is dependent on proprioceptive feedback by examining a rare case of proprioceptive deafferentation (GL). Motor lateralization is thought to arise from asymmetries in neural organization, particularly at the cortical level. For example, we have previously provided evidence that the left hemisphere mediates optimal motor control that allows execution of smooth and efficient arm trajectories, while the right hemisphere mediates impedance control that can achieve stable and accurate final arm postures. The role of proprioception in both of these processes has previously been demonstrated empirically, bringing …

On The Robustness Of Bayesian Network Learning Algorithms Against Malicious Attacks, Noah Joseph Geveke Jul 2020

On The Robustness Of Bayesian Network Learning Algorithms Against Malicious Attacks, Noah Joseph Geveke

Theses and Dissertations

Bayesian networks are effective tools for discovering relationships between variables in a data set. Algorithms that learn Bayesian networks from data fall into three categories: constraint-based, score-based, and hybrid. Hybrid algorithms contain a constraint testing sub-procedure as well as a score function to create the network. Malicious changes to the training set can cause invalid networks that do not model the true data. The effects of these changes have been demonstrated using the PC algorithm, a constraint-based algorithm. In this thesis a method was developed to measure the robustness of various algorithms to determine potential malicious changes. The robustness analysis …

Enhancing Single And Two-Phase Heat Transfer Of Microgap Heat Sinks Using Nano-Structure Coatings, Yueyang Zhao Jul 2020

Enhancing Single And Two-Phase Heat Transfer Of Microgap Heat Sinks Using Nano-Structure Coatings, Yueyang Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the shrinking size and increasing power of electronics, the heat flux generated by electronic devices has greatly increased and imposed challenges to thermal management technologies. Numerous cooling technologies have been developed to cool high-power electronics. Among them, flow boiling in microchannels or a microgap has been one of the most efficient ways to remove high heat flux, which requires less coolant compared with single-phase cooling techniques. However, the flow boiling instability is the one of the most challenging issues, which lead to the premature critical heat flux (CHF) conditions and deteriorate heat transfer rate. The capillary force generated …

Design Of High Efficiency Wireless Power Thansfer System With Nonlinear Resonator, Yibing Zhang Jul 2020

Design Of High Efficiency Wireless Power Thansfer System With Nonlinear Resonator, Yibing Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless power transfer technology (WPT) has been rapidly developed in recent years. The primary benefit of WPT is that it replaces the traditional wire charging with a cordless charging method. WPT technology has been applied in many fields, such as bio-implants, electric vehicles, and wirelessly charging systems. According to the different energy transmission mechanism, WPT technology can be divided into magnetic field coupling (includes magnetically coupled inductive and magnetically-coupled resonant), microwave radiation, laser emission, electrical-field coupling, and ultrasonic transmission type. Among these technologies, the magnetic resonance coupling method has a better promise because of its long transfer distance and high …

Novel Multi-User Chirp Signaling Schemes For Future Aviation Communication Applications, Nozhan Hosseini Jul 2020

Novel Multi-User Chirp Signaling Schemes For Future Aviation Communication Applications, Nozhan Hosseini

Theses and Dissertations

Many wireless communication systems will need to accommodate a larger number of users in the future. One application in particular in which this is critical is low data rate, long range communication links with very large numbers of nodes, such as the internet of things (IoT), possibly the internet of flying things (IoFT), etc. These systems demand advanced multi-access techniques with minimal multiple access interference (MAI). They should also be robust to multiple impairments, including multipath channel distortions, Doppler spreading, and interference. Chirp waveforms are one type of waveform set that can satisfy future system demands in the presence of …

Expansion Microscopy: A New Approach To Microscopic Evaluation, Ashley Ferri Jul 2020

Expansion Microscopy: A New Approach To Microscopic Evaluation, Ashley Ferri

Theses and Dissertations

Optical microscopy resolution is limited by the wavelengths of light and the series of microscope lenses and other optical components used to create a magnified image of cell structures in a sample. Often the cell structures are smaller or closer together than the resolution limits of a light microscope. In 2015 the Boyden group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) created a sample preparation technique, expansion microscopy which involves embedding biological samples in a crosslinked, swellable, hydrogel polymer that allows for uniform physical separation of cell components so that they can subsequently be resolved by light microscopy. Using the …

Fundamental Studies Of Oxygen Electrocatalysis In Alkaline Electrochemical Cells, Victoria F. Mattick Jul 2020

Fundamental Studies Of Oxygen Electrocatalysis In Alkaline Electrochemical Cells, Victoria F. Mattick

Theses and Dissertations

Until recently the world’s main source of energy has been fossil fuels, such as coal and petroleum. However, these energy sources are polluting our planet, becoming scarce and increasingly inaccessible, and are costly to extract. Therefore, much attention has been directed to harvesting clean, abundant, and renewable energy, such as solar rays and wind. However, the intermittency of solar and wind power generation requires an effective energy buffering solution (aka energy storage) to become efficient and reliable. With high efficiency and energy density, rechargeable batteries and reversible fuel cells are two of the best methods for this purpose. Unfortunately, a …

Investigation Of Oxidized Carbon Supported Au Catalysts Synthesized Via Strong Electrostatic Adsorption Of Au(En)2Cl3 For The Hydrochlorination Of Acetylene To Vinyl Chloride Monomer, Sean Reginald Noble

Theses and Dissertations

Over 20 million tons of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) is produced every year using acetylene hydrochlorination using a supported mercuric chloride catalyst. During this process mercury is reduced and sublimes into the environment harming all living animals and humans, so carbon-supported Au catalysts have been developed in attempts to replace it. Various techniques have been used to make these catalysts including several variations of dry impregnation. In this study we investigate the ability of Strong Electrostatic Adsorption (SEA) of Au(en)2Cl3 onto various supports to demonstrate the ability to rationally and consistently synthesize gold catalysts with ultra-small particle …

Theoretical Investigation Of The Biomass Conversion On Transition Metal Surfaces Based On Density Functional Theory Calculations And Machine Learning, Wenqiang Yang Jul 2020

Theoretical Investigation Of The Biomass Conversion On Transition Metal Surfaces Based On Density Functional Theory Calculations And Machine Learning, Wenqiang Yang

Theses and Dissertations

During the past decades, heterogenous catalyzed conversion of biomass to hydrocarbons with similar or identical properties to conventional fossil fuels has gained significantly academic and industrial interest. However, the conventional heterogeneous catalysts such as sulfided NiMo/Al2O3 and CoMo/Al2O3 used have various drawbacks, such as short catalyst lifetime and high sulfur content of product. To overcome the limitations of the conventional sulfided catalysts, new catalysts must be developed, which requires a better understanding of the reaction mechanism of the biomass conversion. Based on density functional theory, in this thesis, we reported a computational calculation study …

Converter- And Module-Level Packaging For High Power Density And High Efficiency Power Conversion, Amol Rajendrakumar Deshpande

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Advancements in the converter- and module-level packaging will be the key for the development of the emerging high-power, high power-density, high-eciency power conversion applications, such as traction, shipboards, more-electric-aircraft, and locomotive. Wide bandgap (WBG) devices such as silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET attract much attention in these applications for their fast switching speeds, resulting in low loss and a consequent possibility for high switching frequency to increase the power density. However, for high-current, high power implementations, WBG devices are still available in small die sizes. Multiple SiC devices need to be connected in parallel to replace a large IGBT die. It …

Investigation Of The Structural, Electronic, And Thermoelectric Properties Of Mono- Chalcogenides, Aida Sheibani Jul 2020

Investigation Of The Structural, Electronic, And Thermoelectric Properties Of Mono- Chalcogenides, Aida Sheibani

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The structural, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of GeTe are studied using density functional theory and Boltzmann transport equations. This material has a rhombohedral crystal structure in ambient temperature with a ferroelectric behavior due to lack of inversion symmetry. This study suggests that the presence of asymmetry in GeTe can lead to an improvement in the thermoelectric properties of this material. In addition, studies on introducing Group III, IV, and V dopants to GeSe show that while these impurities can improve the power factor and decrease the lattice thermal conductivity, they cannot enhance the figure of merit.

Development Of High-Density Propulsion System Technologies For Interplanetary Small Satellites And Cubesats, Morgan Andrew Roddy Jul 2020

Development Of High-Density Propulsion System Technologies For Interplanetary Small Satellites And Cubesats, Morgan Andrew Roddy

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to support the development of a novel propulsion system for small satellites (<180 kg) and CubeSats. This was pursued by conducting a collection of studies that were designed to provide engineering data that would be critical in designing a functional prototype. The novel propulsion system was conceived by the author to provide best-in-class performance for the small satellite and CubeSat families of spacecraft. This context presents specific design requirements that the presented technology attempts to satisfy. The most critical among these is high density; the propellant was designed to be stored with high density and the thruster was designed to be as compact as possible. The propulsion system is composed of two primary elements, a propellant generator and a thruster. The propellant generator works by sublimating a solid crystal into vapor and then using this vapor to etch a dense metal. The resulting gaseous byproducts of this reaction are the propellant. This dissertation used xenon difluoride (XeF2) vapor to etch tungsten (W) which react to form xenon gas (Xe) and tungsten hexafluoride (WF6). This approach gave a theoretical propellant storage density 5.40 g/cm3; and 5.17 g/cm3 was demonstrated. The sublimation dynamics of the XeF2 were studied as a function of surface area and temperature and it was found to be suitable for the intended application due to its high effluence rate; that is, it sublimates fast enough to be useful. The sublimation rates are on the order of 10’s of µg/s. The etch rate of XeF2 on W was also studied and found to be suitably fast to provide useful amounts of reactants for use as a propellant, again on the order of 1’s of µg/s. The thruster is an electrostatic radio frequency (RF) ion thruster design and is manufactured with Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic (LTCC) materials system and manufacturing technology. Manufacturing samples of the thruster were built at the University of Arkansas in July 2015 and tested at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in May 2018. Testing validated the viability of the LTCC thruster and provided valuable information on how to improve the thruster’s design.

Congestion-Clearing Payments To Passengers, Paul Minett, John S. Niles, Richard W. Lee, Brittany Bogue

Mineta Transportation Institute

Peak period motor vehicle traffic volume congests roads all over the world. This project hypothesizes implementing congestion- clearing payments to passengers as a permanent congestion-management solution. Ongoing congestion-free travel would be achieved by removing existing congestion, and absorbing (re)generated demand, at costs that would be expected to increase as the total number of travelers increases over time. The project develops a comprehensive, step-by-step methodology to calculate the benefits and costs of paying for drivers to become passengers at a congestion-clearing level and to maintain this level over time. The method is derived from the literature, analysis by the project team, …

A Multimodal Approach For Monitoring Driving Behavior And Emotions, Arash Tavakoli, Vahid Balali, Arsalan Heydarian Jul 2020

A Multimodal Approach For Monitoring Driving Behavior And Emotions, Arash Tavakoli, Vahid Balali, Arsalan Heydarian

Mineta Transportation Institute

Studies have indicated that emotions can significantly be influenced by environmental factors; these factors can also significantly influence drivers’ emotional state and, accordingly, their driving behavior. Furthermore, as the demand for autonomous vehicles is expected to significantly increase within the next decade, a proper understanding of drivers’/passengers’ emotions, behavior, and preferences will be needed in order to create an acceptable level of trust with humans. This paper proposes a novel semi-automated approach for understanding the effect of environmental factors on drivers’ emotions and behavioral changes through a naturalistic driving study. This setup includes a frontal road and facial camera, a …

A Study Of The Thermodynamics Of Small Systems And Phase Transition In Bulk Square Well-Hard Disk Binary Mixture, Gulce Kalyoncu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Under the umbrella of statistical mechanics and particle-based simulations, two distinct problems have been discussed in this study. The first part included systems of finite clusters of three and 13 particles, where the particles are interacting via Lennard Jones potential. A machine learning technique, Diffusion Maps (DMap), has been employed to the large datasets of thermodynamically small systems from Monte Carlo simulations in order to identify the structural and energetic changes in these systems. DMap suggests at most three dimensions are required to describe and identify the systems with 9 (N = 3) and 39 (N = 13) dimensions. At …

Precipitate Characterization In Model Al-Zn-Mg-(Cu) Alloys Using Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering, Daniel Freiberg, Wenhui Zhu, Jun Sang Park, Jonathan D. Almer, Paul Sanders

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Model 7000 series alloys with and without copper were fabricated into sheets to study precipitation hardening behavior under isothermal aging conditions. Samples of each alloy were subjected to 3 h annealing treatments at various temperatures to produce a range of precipitate size distributions. Hardness, electrical conductivity, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were used to characterize the aging behavior of the two alloys. Precipitate size distributions were modeled from the scattering curves for each annealing condition using a maximum entropy method (MEM) and compared to select transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. The measured average precipitate diameters from TEM were in good …

Skin-Mimo: Vibration-Based Mimo Communication Over Human Skin, Dong Ma, Yuezhong Wu, Ming Ding, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu Jul 2020

Skin-Mimo: Vibration-Based Mimo Communication Over Human Skin, Dong Ma, Yuezhong Wu, Ming Ding, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We explore the feasibility of Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication through vibrations over human skin. Using off-the-shelf motors and piezo transducers as vibration transmitters and receivers, respectively, we build a 2x2 MIMO testbed to collect and analyze vibration signals from real subjects. Our analysis reveals that there exist multiple independent vibration channels between a pair of transmitter and receiver, confirming the feasibility of MIMO. Unfortunately, the slow ramping of mechanical motors and rapidly changing skin channels make it impractical for conventional channel sounding based channel state information (CSI) acquisition, which is critical for achieving MIMO capacity gains. To solve this problem, we …

Prediction Of Isotropic Strain Hardening Material Properties Using Gradient Boosted Regression Tree Method And Hyperparameter Optimization, Darren R. Promer

Masters Theses

In this study a new technique is proposed for the determination of elastic-plastic stress-strain relations for isotropic materials using the force-displacement output from an instrumented indentation test, finite element simulation, and machine learning methods. This non-destructive testing methodology has promising potential for industry implementation. Applications to benefit from this method include the characterization of localized material properties on surface engineered components, and the post-manufacturing assessment of material properties for items such as additively manufactured metallic components and load-bearing welded joints.

Currently, the capability of the instrumented indentation test for determining material properties is limited to the elastic modulus and surface …

Towards A Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Cloud Through Operable Digital Twins And Virtual Production Lines, Md Rakib Shahriar Jul 2020

Towards A Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Cloud Through Operable Digital Twins And Virtual Production Lines, Md Rakib Shahriar

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In last decade, the paradigm of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) has integrated industrial manufacturing systems with Cloud Computing technologies for Cloud Manufacturing. Up to 2015, there were many CPS-based manufacturing systems that collected real-time machining data to perform remote monitoring, prognostics and health management, and predictive maintenance. However, these CPS-integrated and network ready machines were not directly connected to the elements of Cloud Manufacturing and required human-in-the-loop. Addressing this gap, we introduced a new paradigm of Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Cloud (CPMC) that bridges a gap between physical machines and virtual space in 2017. CPMC virtualizes machine tools in cloud through web services …
