Jet Impingement Heat Transfer From Superheated, Superhydrophobic Surfaces, David Jacob Butterfield
Jet Impingement Heat Transfer From Superheated, Superhydrophobic Surfaces, David Jacob Butterfield
Theses and Dissertations
Liquid jet impingement is a technique ubiquitously used to rapidly remove large amounts of heat from a surface. Several different regions of heat transfer spanning from forced convection to nucleate, transition, and film boiling can occur very near to one other both temporally and spatially in quenching or high wall heat flux scenarios. Heat transfer involving jet impingement has previously shown dependency both on jet characteristics such as flow rate and temperature as well as surface material properties. Water droplets are known to bead up upon contact with superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces. This is due to reduced surface attraction caused by …

Use Of Viologens In Mediated Glucose Fuel Cells And In Aqueous Redox Flow Batteries To Improve Performance, Meisam Bahari
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents my efforts to use viologens to improve the performance of glucose fuel cells and aqueous redox flow batteries. These two electrochemical systems have the potential to efficiently exploit renewable sources of energy. The contributions and significance of this work are briefly described below. Glucose Fuel cells. For glucose fuel cells, viologens were adopted as an electron mediator to facilitate the transfer of electrons from glucose to electrodes for power generation. Use of a mediator circumvents the need for precious metal electrodes to catalyze glucose oxidation. Both the oxidation efficiency and rate of glucose oxidation are important to …

Transceivers As A Resource: Scheduling Time And Bandwidth In Software-Defined Radio, Nathan D. Price, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Ivan G. Guardiola
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In the future, software-defined radio may enable a mobile device to support multiple wireless protocols implemented as software applications. These applications, often referred to as waveform applications, could be added, updated, or removed from a software-radio device to meet changing demands. Current software-defined radio solutions grant an active waveform exclusive ownership of a specific transceiver or analog front-end. Since a wireless device has a limited number of front-ends, this approach puts a hard constraint on the number of concurrent waveform applications a device can support. A growing trend in software-defined radio research is to virtualize front-ends to allow sharing and …

The Effect Of Discrete Visual Perturbations On Balance Control During Gait, Lara I. Riem, Brian D. Schmit, Scott A. Beardsley
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Immersive virtual reality provides a safe and costeffective approach to administrating balance disruption during ambulation. Previous research has explored the effects of applying continuous perturbations in a virtual environment to challenge balance. This pilot study investigates the ability to disrupt balance with discrete visual perturbations during ambulation in healthy young adults. During the study participants walked on a treadmill within a virtual environment. As they walked the entire visual scene was intermittently shifted to the left or right 1 meter over 1 second. The results demonstrate a significant decrease in step length (𝑝 <; 0.05) and change in center of mass excursion (𝑝 <; 0.05) across participants (𝑁=13). Changes in gait lasted up to three steps after application, suggesting a consistent challenge to dynamic balance control as a result of the discrete visual perturbation. Further, participants did not demonstrate a reduction in response to the discrete visual perturbation with repeated exposure. The results indicate that discrete visual perturbations of a virtual scene can be used to challenge gait and modulate center of mass sway. The use of visual perturbations within a virtual environment to challenge dynamic balance could provide a safer and more affordable avenue for balance rehabilitation by reducing the need for systems that physically perturb balance.

Auditing Database Systems Through Forensic Analysis, James Wagner
Auditing Database Systems Through Forensic Analysis, James Wagner
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
The majority of sensitive and personal data is stored in a number of different Database Management Systems (DBMS). For example, Oracle is frequently used to store corporate data, MySQL serves as the back-end storage for many webstores, and SQLite stores personal data such as SMS messages or browser bookmarks. Consequently, the pervasive use of DBMSes has led to an increase in the rate at which they are exploited in cybercrimes. After a cybercrime occurs, investigators need forensic tools and methods to recreate a timeline of events and determine the extent of the security breach. When a breach involves a compromised …

A Machine Learning Approach To Delineating Neighborhoods From Geocoded Appraisal Data, Rao Hamza Ali, Josh Graves, Stanley Wu, Jenny Lee, Erik Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Identification of neighborhoods is an important, financially-driven topic in real estate. It is known that the real estate industry uses ZIP (postal) codes and Census tracts as a source of land demarcation to categorize properties with respect to their price. These demarcated boundaries are static and are inflexible to the shift in the real estate market and fail to represent its dynamics, such as in the case of an up-and-coming residential project. Delineated neighborhoods are also used in socioeconomic and demographic analyses where statistics are computed at a neighborhood level. Current practices of delineating neighborhoods have mostly ignored the information …
Network Function Virtualization In Fog Networks, Nazli Siasi
Network Function Virtualization In Fog Networks, Nazli Siasi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The network function virtualization (NFV) paradigm uses commodity servers to implement ''softwarized" networking capabilities and replace costly, proprietary hardware systems. In particular a wide range of virtual network function (VNF) tasks can be implemented here, including rewalls, load-balancers, encryption engines, address translation devices, domain name servers, even routers and switches. NFV also enables a high-degree of service exibility, allowing operators to interconnect multiple VNFs to build highly-customized service function chain (SFC) sequences for their clients. As a result these related technologies are gaining widespread traction in enterprise and cloud-based settings, offering unprecedented service agility and cost effectiveness. Researchers have also …

Individuals with low back pain demonstrate an abnormal lumbo-pelvic coordination compared to back-healthy individuals. This abnormal coordination presents itself as a reduction in lumbar contributions and an increase in pelvic rotations during a trunk forward bending and backward return task. This study investigated the ability of a hip orthosis in correcting such an abnormal lumbo-pelvic coordination by restricting pelvic rotation and, hence increasing lumbar contributions. The effects of the hip orthosis on the lumbo-pelvic coordination were investigated in 20 low back pain patients and 20 asymptomatic controls. The orthosis reduced pelvic rotation by 12.7° and increased lumbar contributions by 11%. …

Remote sensing with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) facilitates photogrammetry for environmental and infrastructural monitoring. Models are created with less computational cost by reducing the number of photos required. Optimal camera locations for reducing the number of photos needed for structure-from-motion (SfM) are determined through eight mathematical set-covering algorithms as constrained by solve time. The algorithms examined are: traditional greedy, reverse greedy, carousel greedy (CG), linear programming, particle swarm optimization, simulated annealing, genetic, and ant colony optimization. Coverage and solve time are investigated for these algorithms. CG is the best method for choosing optimal camera locations as it balances number of …
