Application Of Artificial Intelligence And Geographic Information System For Developing Automated Walkability Score, Md Mehedi Hasan
Application Of Artificial Intelligence And Geographic Information System For Developing Automated Walkability Score, Md Mehedi Hasan
Dissertations
Walking is considered as one of the major modes of active transportation, which contributes to the livability of cities. It is highly important to ensure walk friendly sidewalks to promote human physical activities along roads. Over the last two decades, different walk scores were estimated in respect to walkability measures by applying different methods and approaches. However, in the era of big data and machine learning revolution, there is still a gap to measure the composite walkability score in an automated way by applying and quantifying the activityfriendliness of walkable streets. In this study, a street-level automated walkability score was …
Data Processing Electronics For An Ultra-Fast Single-Photon Counting Camera, Jackson Hyde
Data Processing Electronics For An Ultra-Fast Single-Photon Counting Camera, Jackson Hyde
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Localizing photon arrivals with high spatial (megapixel) and temporal (sub-nanosecond) resolution would be transformative for a number of applications, including single-molecule super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. Here, the Data Processing Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is developed as an ultra-fast computational platform built on an FPGA for a microchannel plate (MCP)-photomultiplier tube (PMT) based single-photon counting camera. Each photon is converted by the MCP-PMT into an electron cloud that generates current pulses across a 50×50 cross-strip anode. The Data Processing FPGA executes a massively parallel center-of-gravity coordinate determination algorithm on the digitized current pulses to determine a 2D position and time of …
An Investigation Into Multi-View Error Correcting Output Code Classifiers Applied To Organ Tissue Classification, Daniel Alvarez
An Investigation Into Multi-View Error Correcting Output Code Classifiers Applied To Organ Tissue Classification, Daniel Alvarez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Large amounts of data is being generated constantly each day, so much data that it is difficult to find patterns in order to predict outcomes and make decisions for both humans and machines alike. It would be useful if this data could be simplified using machine learning techniques. For example, biological cell identity is dependent on many factors tied to genetic processes. Such factors include proteins, gene transcription, and gene methylation. Each of these factors are highly complex mechanism with immense amounts of data. Simplifying these can then be helpful in finding patterns in them. Error-Correcting Output Codes (ECOC) does …

Thermo-Mechanical Modeling And The Application Of Coiled Polymer Actuators In Soft Robotics And Biomimetics, Robert Hunt
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Coiled polymer actuators (CPA) are a recently discovered smart material. Due to their large tensile stoke and power densities they are often used as actuators or artificial muscles. CPA’s are fabricated from a polymer fiber, typically nylon, mechanically twisted into a coil or coiled around a mandrel and annealed. When heated over the glass transition temperature they can contract, expand or exhibit torsional actuation, depending on the fabrication method and end conditions.
The fabrication and application of CPA is well documented and has made many innovations in the fields of smart materials, soft robotics and the likes. However, there is …

Single Molecule Super-Resolution Microscopy Study On The Precision With Which Dna Nanostructures Can Orient Fluorescent Dyes, Brett Michael Ward
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
DNA nanotechnology enables the rapid, programmable self-assembly of novel structures and devices at the nanoscale. Utilizing the simplicity of Watson-Crick base pairing, DNA nanostructures are capable of assembling a variety of nanoparticles in arbitrary configurations with relative ease. Several emerging opto-electronic systems require a high degree of control of both the position and orientation of component fluorescent molecules, and while DNA nanostructures have demonstrated these capabilities, the precision with which DNA can orient fluorescent molecules is not well understood. Determining these bounds is critical in establishing the viability of DNA nanotechnology as a method of assembling fluorescent molecular networks.

Mxenes As Flow Electrodes For Capacitive Deionization Of Wastewater, Naqsh E. Mansoor
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The energy-water nexus poses an integrated research challenge, while opening up an opportunity space for the development of energy efficient technologies for water remediation. Capacitive Deionization (CDI) is an upcoming reclamation technology that uses a small applied voltage applied across electrodes to electrophoretically remove dissolved ionic impurities from wastewater streams. Similar to a supercapacitor, the ions are stored in the electric double layer of the electrodes. Reversing the polarity of applied voltage enables recovery of the removed ionic impurities, allowing for recycling and reuse. Simultaneous materials recovery and water reclamation makes CDI energy efficient and resource conservative, with potential to …

Multiphysics Finite Element Analysis Of In-Pile Sensors For Advanced Nuclear Reactors, Takoda Linn Bingham
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Nuclear reactors have large needs for in-pile sensors that are durable in high temperature, radioactive, and corrosive environments. With the use of multiphysics finite element analysis (FEA) researchers can speed up sensor prototyping. FEA also allows for a better fundamental understanding of sensors and enables sensor optimization. This research focuses on three types of in-pile sensors developed at Idaho National Laboratory: acoustic sensors, linear variable differential transformers (LVDT), and capacitance based strain gauges (CSG). Two acoustic sensors, magnetostrictive waveguides and piezoelectric surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors were first modeled. These models showed the acoustic wave patterns and estimated the speed …

Assessing The Prevalence Of Suspicious Activities In Asphalt Pavement Construction Using Algorithmic Logics And Machine Learning, Mostofa Najmus Sakib
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) is a planned systematic approach to secure the satisfactory performance of Hot mix asphalt (HMA) construction projects. Millions of dollars are invested by government and state highway agencies to construct large-scale HMA construction projects. QC/QA is statistical approach for checking the desired construction properties through independent testing. The practice of QC/QA has been encouraged by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) since the mid 60’s. However, the standard QC/QA practice is often criticized on how effective such statistical tests and how representative the reported material tests are. Material testing data alteration in the HMA …

Climate change is one of the most concerning global issues and has the potential to influence every aspect of human life. Like different components of society, it can impose significant adverse impacts on pavement infrastructure. Although several research efforts have focused on studying the effects of climate change on natural and built systems, its impact on pavement performance has not been studied as extensively. The primary objectives of this thesis research was to quantify the effect of temperature changes on flexible pavement response and performance prediction using the AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design (PMED), and quantify the effects of Local Calibration …
A Computational Framework To Model Mesenchymal Stem Cell Nucleus Mechanics Using Confocal Microscopy, Zeke Kennedy
A Computational Framework To Model Mesenchymal Stem Cell Nucleus Mechanics Using Confocal Microscopy, Zeke Kennedy
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The mechanical properties of the cell nucleus are emerging as a key component in genetic transcription. It has been shown that the stiffness of the nucleus in part regulates the transcription of genes in response to external mechanical stimuli. The stiffness has been shown to change as a result of both disease and changes to the external environment. While the mechanical structure of the nucleus can be visually documented using a confocal microscope, it is currently impossible to test the stiffness of the nucleus without a mechanical testing apparatus such as an atomic force microscope. This is problematic in that …
Design And Characterization Of Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Arrays For Killing And Removing Bacterial Biofilms, Adam Croteau
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Present research at Boise State University (BSU) has demonstrated the ability of low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) devices to remove bacterial biofilms on steel substrates. Although bacteria may easily be inactivated by plasma treatment, the remains of the organism are still present on the substrate. It is shown that single element DBD CAP discharge devices operating at 2100 Vrms with 5 LPM of hydrated argon gas etched P. fluorescens biofilm within a few minutes of exposure. Similarly, using an 8 element array of linear plasma discharges, etch removal of biofilm was …
Trisiloxane Surfactant Adjuvants In Pollen, Autumn Slade
Trisiloxane Surfactant Adjuvants In Pollen, Autumn Slade
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Chemicals are often added to agricultural pesticide mixes to help increase the efficiency of the field spray solution, and one of the main groups of chemicals used for this purpose are trisiloxane surfactants (TSSs). Normally TSSs are considered non-toxic, but recent studies have shown TSSs to have negative impacts on organisms like honey bees. Though TSSs have recently been found in environmental sources like water, pollen, and beeswax, little is known about how TSSs behave in the environment or affects active ingredients, like pesticides.
To help determine the environmental prevalence and fate of TSSs, several studies were performed. Pollen was …
Pitched Baseballs And The Seam Shifted Wake, Andrew W. Smith
Pitched Baseballs And The Seam Shifted Wake, Andrew W. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect that seams have on the way a baseball moves through the air. An examination of the airflow around a baseball led to the understanding that when seams are in certain areas on the baseball's surface the airflow changes. A subsequent experiment was performed which showed that when these changes in airflow were on one side of the baseball more than the other, the ball moved away from the side with the seams. This movement is in a different direction than the movement direction caused by a ball's spin. These experiments were done …
Novel Three-Dimensional Scaffold For Skeletal Muscle Tissue, Matthew H. Clegg
Novel Three-Dimensional Scaffold For Skeletal Muscle Tissue, Matthew H. Clegg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Cells are traditionally grown on a flat, plastic surface that has been optimized for cell attachment. While this is appropriate for growing and maintaining cells, this two-dimensional cell culture model is not an adequate representation of a three-dimensional body. Creating three-dimensional lab models is an important step to model diseases and damage to the skeletal muscle system.
To create this three-dimensional environment, a plastic frame was designed to support silkworm fibers. Skeletal muscle cells were then grown along the silkworm fibers and the growth of these cells in a three-dimensional environment was compared to cells grown on a flat, two-dimensional …
Thermal Modeling And Analysis Of Roadway Embedded Wireless Power Transfer Modules, Arden N. Barnes
Thermal Modeling And Analysis Of Roadway Embedded Wireless Power Transfer Modules, Arden N. Barnes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wireless charging of electric vehicles is a developing technology which potentially increases efficiency and safety. It also allows for charging vehicles while they are moving by having charging stations embedded in the roadway. Because roadways are thermally insulating, it is important to know how the heat from the charging stations will move through the roadway, which will allow further research into whether the heat will cause damage to the components in the station or to the roadway. This thesis studies the way the heat moves through concrete with wireless charging coils embedded in it. This is accomplished by measuring the …
Indoor Source Localization Of Radio Frequency Transmitters Using Blind Channel Identification Techniques, Madison L. Rose
Indoor Source Localization Of Radio Frequency Transmitters Using Blind Channel Identification Techniques, Madison L. Rose
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Locating transmitters is a research area that is becoming increasingly relevant as technology advances. It is especially useful for determining the location of livestock, drones, keys, phones, tablets, etc. As a result of this push for locating devices, many algorithms have been developed to determine source locations. Most source location algorithms and techniques rely on a "line of sight", or a direct path between the source and the receivers to provide accurate results.
Indoor environments pose a challenge to locating transmitters due to the many surfaces that allow radio waves to interact (reflect, refract, and generally distort) with them. Because …
Fluted Films Caused By Gravity Driven Water Drainage From Vertical Tubes, Matthew B. Jones
Fluted Films Caused By Gravity Driven Water Drainage From Vertical Tubes, Matthew B. Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
When a stationary mass of water in a vertical tube is suddenly released, it creates a variety of artistic shapes and behaviors as it escapes the tube exit. As the descending water accelerates in the tube, friction along the tube wall slows the outer radius, resulting in a moving film entrained on the tube that trails the main body of water. When this film exits the tube, surface tension, gravity, and inertia interact to cause the film to create a wide variety of shapes, including jets, tubes, water bells, champagne glasses, and bubbles; rich forms that appear in other natural …
A General Approach To Lifting-Line Theory, Applied To Wings With Sweep, Jackson T. Reid
A General Approach To Lifting-Line Theory, Applied To Wings With Sweep, Jackson T. Reid
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Lifting-line theory is one simple method of predicting the lift produced by a wing. The traditional implementation of lifting-line theory, developed in 1918, is limited to predicting the lift of traditional straight wings. In this work, lifting-line theory is extended to predict the lift produced by modern swept (or "v-shaped") wings by strategically handling the singularities inherent to the theory. The resulting formulation is shown to be both accurate and computationally inexpensive, when compared to experimental and higher-fidelity computational results, demonstrating the method's usefulness as an aerodynamic design tool. Because of the low computational cost and accuracy of the method …
Submerged And Floating Woody Debris-Blocking Sensitivity Of Labyrinth Weirs, Taylor Vaughn
Submerged And Floating Woody Debris-Blocking Sensitivity Of Labyrinth Weirs, Taylor Vaughn
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Accumulation of floating and submerged woody debris at flow control structures can result in reduced discharge efficiency (higher upstream head for a given weir discharge). Labyrinth weirs are more prone to debris blockage than less efficient control structures due to their ability to pass large amounts of flow with relatively small heads. Labyrinth weirs also have geometric properties that are more likely to prevent debris from passing over the weir than linear weirs.
A laboratory study was performed to evaluate the interaction between labyrinth weirs and debris sizes. The individual debris tests indicated that debris blockage probability is influenced by …

In our modern world satellite systems are an evermore common part of day to day life. Reliable communication from the ground to these satellites is becoming more and more necessary. Plasma scintillations in the ionosphere can make these communications difficult or even impossible. By gaining a better understanding of these scintillations, times of bad satellite connection can be predicted in the same way terrestrial weather gets predicted and reported today. The objective of the SPORT mission is to gain a better understanding of these plasma scintillations. In order to measure plasma density, and gain a better understanding of plasma scintillations, …
Study Of Levee Underseepage Through Abandoned Channels And Point Bars On Curved Levee Sections Using The Response Surface-Monte Carlo Method, Tomsen Reed
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The current procedures for calculated the probability of failure of levees (earthen structures designed to prevent flooding of important locations) all have their own unique limitations. Some methods are very simplistic, and either ignore or do not allow for inclusion of complex geometries. Other methods allow for complex geometry, but do not lend themselves to large quantities of analysis because of the amount of time it takes to create or modify a model. For these reasons, previous research performed by Lourdes Polanco and Dr. John Rice developed the preliminary stages of a new method called the Response Surface-Monte Carlo method. …
Adaptive Spline Fitting With Particle Swarm Optimization, Soumya Mohanty, Ethan Fahnestock
Adaptive Spline Fitting With Particle Swarm Optimization, Soumya Mohanty, Ethan Fahnestock
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
In fitting data with a spline, finding the optimal placement of knots can significantly improve the quality of the fit. However, the challenging high-dimensional and non-convex optimization problem associated with completely free knot placement has been a major roadblock in using this approach. We present a method that uses particle swarm optimization (PSO) combined with model selection to address this challenge. The problem of overfitting due to knot clustering that accompanies free knot placement is mitigated in this method by explicit regularization, resulting in a significantly improved performance on highly noisy data. The principal design choices available in the method …

Performance Analysis Of V2v And V2i Communications Using Empirical Path Loss Models Indicators And Embedded Iot Devices, Ibrahim Lateef Oraibi Al Kinoon
Theses and Dissertations
Vehicle management technologies deals with the management of critical vehicle information, including location, idle time, speed, and mileage. Such information can always be transferred through a direct vehicle-to-vehicle communication among cars. However, the limitation of this type of design is that it is based on the assumption that vehicles are always served by cellular bases, which is not always the case. For the effective implementation of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology in this sector, it is critical to design vehicles with systems that enable them to transmit essential information in the absence of base stations. IoT technologies can then be used …
