A Hybrid Achromatic Metalens, Fatih Balli, Mansoor A. Sultan, Sarah K. Lami, J. Todd Hastings Aug 2020

A Hybrid Achromatic Metalens, Fatih Balli, Mansoor A. Sultan, Sarah K. Lami, J. Todd Hastings

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Metalenses, ultra-thin optical elements that focus light using subwavelength structures, have been the subject of a number of recent investigations. Compared to their refractive counterparts, metalenses offer reduced size and weight, and new functionality such as polarization control. However, metalenses that correct chromatic aberration also suffer from markedly reduced focusing efficiency. Here we introduce a Hybrid Achromatic Metalens (HAML) that overcomes this trade-off and offers improved focusing efficiency over a broad wavelength range from 1000-1800 nm. HAMLs can be designed by combining recursive ray-tracing and simulated phase libraries rather than computationally intensive global search algorithms. Moreover, HAMLs can be fabricated …

A Modeling Framework For Urban Growth Prediction Using Remote Sensing And Video Prediction Technologies: A Time-Dependent Convolutional Encoder-Decoder Architecture, Ahmed Hassan Jaad

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Studying the growth pattern of cities/urban areas has received considerable attention during the past few decades. The goal is to identify directions and locations of potential growth, assess infrastructure and public service requirements, and ensure the integration of the new developments with the existing city structure. This dissertation presents a novel model for urban growth prediction using a novel machine learning model. The model treats successive historical satellite images of the urban area under consideration as a video for which future frames are predicted. A time-dependent convolutional encoder-decoder architecture is adopted. The model considers as an input a satellite image …

Optimizing The Methanotrophic Production Of Polyhydroxyalkanoates Using Mixed Microbial Bacteria Cultures, Kai Cheng Aug 2020

Optimizing The Methanotrophic Production Of Polyhydroxyalkanoates Using Mixed Microbial Bacteria Cultures, Kai Cheng

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

The use of petroleum-based plastics has caused serious economic and environmental problems. It is imperative to develop sustainable ways to produce valuable and environmentally-friendly materials. Methanotrophic bacteria are known for assimilating methane while generating polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) biopolymers, which are potential substitutes for conventional plastics. Additionally, biologically generated methane and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are abundant and readily accessible through anaerobic digestion of organic wastes. Thus, optimizing the methanotrophic production will bring significant economic and environmental benefits.

In section one, a feast-famine based cultivation system was adopted to produce PHAs using Hyphomicrobium, and Methylocysits dominated bacterial culture. The mixed bacterial culture …

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates the development and use of a wireless wearable system for the assessment of gait. The system proposed consists of a sensor module that is attached to the foot. The sensor proposed is an inertial measurement unit, often abbreviated as IMU - a 9-axis System in Package (SiP) including a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope, and a 3-axis magnetometer, as well as a fusion engine for signal processing. While the focus of this work is on evaluating gait metrics, the performance of the proposed IMU in evaluating orientation is quantified. In doing this work, we try to address …

Homogenization Of Composite And Cellular Materials Incorporating Microstructure And Surface Energy Effects, Ahmad Gad Aug 2020

Homogenization Of Composite And Cellular Materials Incorporating Microstructure And Surface Energy Effects, Ahmad Gad

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

In the last few decades, the popularity of composite and cellular materials has rapidly increased through their widespread applications in multiple engineering fields including aerospace, automotive, civil and biomedical. However, to a large extent, the success of their practical applications depends on our ability to predict their mechanical behavior by using high-fidelity mechanics models.

Micromechanical modeling of composite and cellular materials is a challenging task due to the heterogeneous nature of such materials and the interactions among various constituent phases at the microscopic level, which result in non-homogeneous deformation, strain and stress fields. Therefore, it is necessary to develop simple …

Admittance Method For Estimating Local Field Potentials Generated In A Multi-Scale Neuron Model Of The Hippocampus, Clayton S. Bingham, Javad Paknahad, Christopher Bc Girard, Kyle Loizos, Jean-Marie C. Bouteiller, Dong Song, Gianluca Lazzi, Theodore W. Berger

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Significant progress has been made toward model-based prediction of neral tissue activation in response to extracellular electrical stimulation, but challenges remain in the accurate and efficient estimation of distributed local field potentials (LFP). Analytical methods of estimating electric fields are a first-order approximation that may be suitable for model validation, but they are computationally expensive and cannot accurately capture boundary conditions in heterogeneous tissue. While there are many appropriate numerical methods of solving electric fields in neural tissue models, there isn't an established standard for mesh geometry nor a well-known rule for handling any mismatch in spatial resolution. Moreover, the …

Development Of A Nomogram To Predict The Maximum Contact Stress Between A Bridge I-Girder And A Support Roller, Thanin Chanmalai Aug 2020

Development Of A Nomogram To Predict The Maximum Contact Stress Between A Bridge I-Girder And A Support Roller, Thanin Chanmalai

Master's Theses

The incremental launching method (ILM) is one of the methods of bridge construction located in environmentally sensitive areas. During the bridge launching, there are significant contact stress issues at the contact regions between the launching system and the steel bridge girders. The Iowa River Bridge (IRB) is a case study of bridge construction that used the ILM during a steel I-girders installation. Contact stress can cause severe defects during launch, which can occur within the material where the material could be damaged.

Hertz contact theory is applied for calculating contact stress between two solid surfaces, which is initially derived from …

A U-Shaped Complementary Open Loop Defective Ground Structure With Slow Wave Structure For Mode Conversion And Common Mode Noise Suppression, Liang Zhang, Qiang Ming Cai, Xiao Bo Yu, Lin Zhu, Chao Zhang, Yinglei Ren, Jun Fan Aug 2020

A U-Shaped Complementary Open Loop Defective Ground Structure With Slow Wave Structure For Mode Conversion And Common Mode Noise Suppression, Liang Zhang, Qiang Ming Cai, Xiao Bo Yu, Lin Zhu, Chao Zhang, Yinglei Ren, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the increase of signal rate, differential interconnection becomes more and more widely used. However, when the differential pair is asymmetric in layout, e.g., bending lines, common mode noise will be produced in the circuit, which may further cause EMI problems. In this paper, an efficient method, i.e., combing a U-shaped complementary open loop defective ground structure (DGS) with adding slow wave structure at the inner bending line, is proposed to suppress the differential-to-common mode conversion and common-mode noise of right-angle bend discontinuity for differential signaling. The simulation results show that the mode conversion can be reduced to less than-50dB …

Fext Reduction Using Mushroom Structures Thickened Soldermask For Ddr5 Pcbs, Xiao Bo Yu, Qiang Ming Cai, Liang Zhang, Chao Zhang, Lin Zhu, Yinglei Ren, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Far-end crosstalk (FEXT) between adjacent signal lines is one of the most critical factors affecting signal integrity (SI) in double data rate 5 (DDR5) printed circuit boards (PCBs). In this paper, a new method for FEXT reduction, based on mushroom structures thickened solder mask (MSTS) for coupled signal lines, is proposed and investigated. From the simulated S-parameters results, FEXT of this proposed method can be suppressed among a very wide frequency range. Additionally, the FEXT is decreased more than 25dB around the main frequency of DDR5, compared with the traditional signal routing. Finally, both frequency and time domains results show …

A 2.56 Gbps Serial Wireline Transceiver That Supports An Auxiliary Channel And A Hybrid Line Driver To Compensate Large Channel Loss, Xiaoran Wang Aug 2020

A 2.56 Gbps Serial Wireline Transceiver That Supports An Auxiliary Channel And A Hybrid Line Driver To Compensate Large Channel Loss, Xiaoran Wang

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Serial transceiver links are widely used for high-speed point-to-point communications. This dissertation describes two transceiver link designs for two different applications.

In serial wireline communications, security is an increasingly important factor to concern. Securing an information processing system at the application and system software layers is regarded as a necessary but incomplete defense against the cyber security threats. In this dissertation, an asynchronous serial transceiver that is capable of transmitting and receiving an auxiliary data stream concurrently with the primary data stream is described. The transceiver instantiates the auxiliary data stream by modulating the phase of the primary data without …

Model-Based And Data-Driven Situational Awareness For Distribution System Monitoring And Control, Ying Zhang Aug 2020

Model-Based And Data-Driven Situational Awareness For Distribution System Monitoring And Control, Ying Zhang

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Electric power systems are undergoing a dramatic change. The penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind turbine generators and photovoltaic panels is turning a traditional power system into the active distribution network. Power system situational awareness, which provides critical information for system monitoring and control, is being challenged by multiple sources of uncertainties such as random meter errors, stochastic power output of DERs, and imprecise network parameters. On the other hand, cyber-physical power system operation is vulnerable to cyberattacks against effective state estimation, such as false data injection attacks (FDIAs). To construct next-generation smart grids, this dissertation develops …

Inter-Core Interference Mitigation In A Mixed Criticality System, Michael Glenn Hinton Aug 2020

Inter-Core Interference Mitigation In A Mixed Criticality System, Michael Glenn Hinton

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we evaluate how well isolation can be achieved between two virtual machines within a mixed criticality system on a multi-core processor. We achieve this isolation with Jailhouse, an open-source, minimalist hypervisor. We then enhance Jailhouse with core throttling, a technique we use to minimize inter-core interference between VMs. Then, we run workloads with and without core throttling to determine the effect throttling has on interference between a non-real time VM and a real-time VM. We find that Jailhouse provides excellent isolation between VMs even without throttling, and that core throttling suppresses the remaining inter-core interference to a …

Analysis Of Inlet Distortion Patterns On Distortion Transfer And Generation Through A Highly Loaded Fan Stage, Andrew Dallin Orme Aug 2020

Analysis Of Inlet Distortion Patterns On Distortion Transfer And Generation Through A Highly Loaded Fan Stage, Andrew Dallin Orme

Theses and Dissertations

Characterization of distortion transfer and generation through fans with distorted inlet conditions enables progress towards designs with improved distortion tolerance. The abruptness of transition from undistorted to distorted total pressure regions at the inlet impacts the induced swirl profile and therefore the distortion transfer and generation. These impacts are characterized using URANS simulations of PBS Rotor 4 geometry under a variety of inlet distortion profiles. A 90° and a 135° sector, both of 15% total pressure distortion, are considered. Variants of each sector size, with decreasing levels of distortion transition abruptness, are each applied to the fan. Fourier-based distortion descriptors …

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Waterborne viruses are responsible for numerous diseases and are abundant in aquatic systems. Understanding the fate of viruses in natural systems has important implications for human health. This research quantifies the uptake of the bacteriophage T4 and the enteric virus echovirus 11 when exposed to the filter feeders Tetrahymena pyriformis and Daphnia magna, and also examines the potential of viral transfer due to trophic interactions. Experiments co-incubating each species with the viruses over 72-96 h showed up to a 4 log virus removal for T. pyriformis, while direct viral uptake by D. magna was not observed. However, viral uptake by …

Co-Milling And Cofiring Of Woody Biomass With Coal In Utility Boilers: Enabling Technology Through Experiments And Modelling, Seyedhassan Fakourian Aug 2020

Co-Milling And Cofiring Of Woody Biomass With Coal In Utility Boilers: Enabling Technology Through Experiments And Modelling, Seyedhassan Fakourian

Theses and Dissertations

Beetle-killed trees and woody residues degenerate and may lead to wildfires and uncontrolled CO2 emission. Woody biomass is known as a neutral CO2 solid fuel since it generates the same amount of CO2 that takes from atmosphere during its growing up. Cofiring woody biomass with coal in existing coal power plants is a reasonable solution to reduce the net amount of CO2 emission and decrease the risk of wildfires. However, there are some challenges ranging from providing and handling the woody biomass to the operation of cofiring woody biomass with coal. Co-milling of the fuels and ash deposition on the …

Bridge Resilience Assessment With Inspire Data, Iris Tien Aug 2020

Bridge Resilience Assessment With Inspire Data, Iris Tien

INSPIRE-UTC Annual Meetings

Robotic data collection, both automated and remote, will enable post-disaster assessment of bridge components where it would normally be difficult and potentially dangerous for manual inspection by field workers to do so.

This project aims to develop and validate a new framework that uses the data collected from the robotic exploration of infrastructure, particularly after a disaster, to assess the condition of bridges and prioritize these structures for repair. This will improve the resilience of the transportation system to disasters by targeting bridge repairs and enabling resources to be distributed more effectively across the system for more rapid recovery after …

Climbing Robots With Automated Deployment Of Sensors And Nde Devices For Steel Bridge Inspection, Hung La Aug 2020

Climbing Robots With Automated Deployment Of Sensors And Nde Devices For Steel Bridge Inspection, Hung La

INSPIRE-UTC Annual Meetings

The PI was a research scientist/faculty at Rutgers University who successfully developed in 2014 a Robotic Assisted Bridge Inspection Tool (RABIT) for bridge deck inspections. Other bridge elements, such as girders and columns, or even underside of bridge decks are difficult to access and remain a challenge for efficient inspection. Like visual inspection, current practices for bridge maintenance are equally time consuming and expensive. Automation of simple maintenance actions such as bearing cleaning and concrete sealing with robots will lead to a leap forward to the next-generation strategy of bridge maintenance.

This project aims to develop and prototype automated climbing …

Bridge Inspection Robot Deployment Systems (Birds), Bo Shang Aug 2020

Bridge Inspection Robot Deployment Systems (Birds), Bo Shang

INSPIRE-UTC Annual Meetings

Climbing robots for both concrete and steel bridges and UAVs are being developed to support bridge inspection with advanced evaluation technologies at the INSPIRE University Transportation Center. They are mostly applicable to large open areas with little or no obstacles. For I-shaped beams or girders, climbing along the cross section of these structural members is not a trial task. In particular, a climbing robot may not have a sufficient footprint to make a safe turn from the inner to outer face of a top or bottom flange. In this case, an unmanned vehicle is conceived to facilitate I-girder inspection and …

Autonomous Wall-Climbing Robots For Inspection And Maintenance Of Concrete Bridges, Jizhong Xiao Aug 2020

Autonomous Wall-Climbing Robots For Inspection And Maintenance Of Concrete Bridges, Jizhong Xiao

INSPIRE-UTC Annual Meetings

Since 2002, the PI’s group has developed four generations of wall-climbing robots for NDE inspection of civil infrastructure. These robots combine the advantages of aerodynamic attraction and suction to achieve a desirable balance of strong adhesion and high mobility. They don’t require perfect sealing and can thus move on smooth and rough surfaces, such as brick, concrete, stucco, wood, glass, and metal. For example, Rise-Rover uses two drive modules to carry their middle compartment with payload up to 450 N. Ground penetrating radar (GPR)-Rover and Mini GPR-Rover are custom designed to carry a GSSI’s GPR antenna for subsurface defect detection …

Mobile-Manipulating Uavs For Sensor Installation, Bridge Inspection And Maintenance, Paul Oh Aug 2020

Mobile-Manipulating Uavs For Sensor Installation, Bridge Inspection And Maintenance, Paul Oh

INSPIRE-UTC Annual Meetings

Mobile manipulating UAVs have great potential for bridge inspection and maintenance. Since 2002, the PI has developed UAVs that could fly through in-and-around buildings and tunnels. Collision avoidance in such cluttered near-Earth environments has been a key challenge. The advent of light-weight, computationally powerful cameras led to breakthroughs in SLAM even though SLAM-based autonomous aerial navigation around bridges remains an unsolved problem.

In 2007, the PI integrated a mobile manipulation function into UAVs, greatly extending the capabilities of UAVs from passive survey of environments with cameras to active interaction with environments using limbs. Mobile-manipulating UAVs have since been demonstrated to …
