Multi-Modal Data Analysis And Fusion For Classification In 2d/3d Sensing, Jonathan P. Schierl

Honors Theses

This research would develop a method of more accurately detecting objects using machine learning. There is plenty of current research and algorithms to tackle this problem. Our approach would use a dataset gathered with 2-Dimensional Infrared Imagery as well as 3-Dimensional LiDAR Data. We would develop a deep learning network with the ability to “learn” using both of these datasets. This proposed fusion network will perform better than either of the individual networks.

Designing And Implementing A Peer-To-Peer Led Behavioral And Energy Reduction Program For Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jenn Hoody Dec 2020

Designing And Implementing A Peer-To-Peer Led Behavioral And Energy Reduction Program For Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jenn Hoody

Honors Theses

Reduction in energy consumption from fossil fuels is a necessary step toward combating climate change as more and more studies are revealing the catastrophic outcomes if the current trends do not change. Residential programs generally managed by energy utilities promoting energy cost savings and reduced consumption are being enacted to decrease the greenhouse emissions. However, thus far, little to no measures have been taken to extend the reach of such programs to low-income communities. Reducing household energy consumption would be particularly beneficial for these communities as it would lower utility bills for low-income households who spend a substantially greater portion …

Geo-Structural Analysis Of Integral Abutment Bridges, Biyi Li Dec 2020

Geo-Structural Analysis Of Integral Abutment Bridges, Biyi Li

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Integral abutment bridges are jointless bridges where bridge decks and girders are integrated with abutments. The longitudinal displacements and rotations of the bridge are partially accommodated by the soil-pile system wherein the soil surrounding the piles generates active and reactive lateral forces when the piles deflect due to the movement of the superstructure. Since the soil stress-strain responses are inherently nonlinear, the pile deflection and the soil stiffness are interdependent. Consequently, evaluating soil-pile interactions requires a detailed geo-structural analysis. There are two common approaches used to idealize the soil-pile interactions for laterally loaded piles: the p-y and continuum mechanics approaches …

Evolution And Flow Of Vapors In A Fluidized Bed, Hansen Mangaranap Silitonga Dec 2020

Evolution And Flow Of Vapors In A Fluidized Bed, Hansen Mangaranap Silitonga

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Vaporization of injected liquid is a key process in many industrial fluidized beds. In Fluid Cokers, for example, quicker vaporization would increase liquid product yield and reduce fouling. A new experimental method was developed to measure the vaporization rate by injecting liquid for a certain duration to reach a constant vaporization rate while monitoring changes in pressure and vapor composition in the exhaust pipe of the fluidization column. Three processes can delay vaporization in a fluidized bed: heat flux from hot-dry particles to wet particles, vapor saturation, and wet agglomerate formation. Operating a spray nozzle at a very high atomization …

A Comparison Of General Aviation Accidents Involving Airline Pilots And Instrument-Rated Private Pilots, Douglas D. Boyd, Mark Scharf Ph.D., David S. Cross

Publications

Introduction: The extremely low accident rate for U.S air carriers relative to that of general aviation (~1 and ~60/million flight hours respectively) partly reflects advanced airman certification, more demanding recurrency training, and stringent operational regulations. However, whether such skillset/training/regulations translate into improved safety for airline pilots operating in the general aviation environment is unknown, and the aim of this study. Methods: Accidents (1998-2017) involving airline pilots and instrument-rated private pilots (PPL-IFR) operating non-revenue light aircraft were identified from the NTSB accident database. An online survey informed general aviation flight exposure for both pilot cohorts. Statistics used proportion testing and Mann-Whitney …

An Efficient Deep-Learning-Based Detection And Classification System For Cyber-Attacks In Iot Communication Networks, Qasem Abu Al-Haija, Saleh Zein-Sabatto

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research

With the rapid expansion of intelligent resource-constrained devices and high-speed communication technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT) has earned wide recognition as the primary standard for low-power lossy networks (LLNs). Nevertheless, IoT infrastructures are vulnerable to cyber-attacks due to the constraints in computation, storage, and communication capacity of the endpoint devices. From one side, the majority of newly developed cyber-attacks are formed by slightly mutating formerly established cyber-attacks to produce a new attack that tends to be treated as normal traffic through the IoT network. From the other side, the influence of coupling the deep learning techniques with the cybersecurity …

Inter-Cross De-Modulated Refractive Index And Temperature Sensor By An Etched Multi-Core Fiber Of A Mzi Structure, Farhan Mumtaz, Yutang Dai, Muhammad Aqueel Ashraf

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a relative sensitivity of in-fiber inter-cross demodulation of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on an etched multi-core fiber (eMCF). The sensor can measure the external refractive index (RI) and temperature with a large fringe visibility of 15 dB. It is tuned using a simple technique of slow chemical etching. When the outer cores of MCF will be exposed to the surrounding, a large difference of relative effective RI is observed, which enhances the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensor's wavelength and intensity responses have displayed that it can function with three different inter-cross-demodulation phenomena. A superior RI sensitivity …

Condition Rating Prediction Using An Interactive Deterioration Model Development Package, Minwoo Chang, Mitchell S. Maguire

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

This paper presents an advanced method to determine explanatory variables required for developing deterioration models without the interference of human bias. Although a stationary set of explanatory variables is ideal for long-term monitoring and asset management, the penalty regression results vary annually due to the innate bias in the inspection data. In this study, weighting factors were introduced to consider the inspection data collected for several years, and the most stationary set was identified. To manage the substantial amount of inspection data effectively, we proposed a software package referred to as the Deterioration Model Development Package (DMDP). The objective of …
