Study Of Synchronization For Fractional-Order Hyperchaotic System And Its Application In Secure Communication, Xue Wei, Jinkang Xu, Hongyan Jia
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: A unidirectionally coupled synchronization method was adopted to design and implement the synchronization for the reported commensurate fractional-order hyperchaotic system, and its correctness and effectiveness were analyzed in theory. Moreover, taking an example of 3.6-order hyperchaotic system, analog circuits were designed to implement the fractional-order hyperchaotic system and its unidirectionally coupled synchronization with the frequency-domain approximation method based on Bode diagram. By conducting the circuit implementation, it is found that the results of the circuit implementation are in good agreement with those of the numerical simulation, which demonstrates the feasibility of the synchronization. On this basis, a secure communication …

Simulation Study On External Explode Of Large Equivalent Charge On Large Buildings, Weiping Zhao, Xiankun Ge, Chuanwu Liu, Fengchun Zhu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The particle algorithm in AUTODYN, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), was used to simulate dynamic damage of the external explosion on large buildings, which provided a visual effect. The dynamic damage details of reinforced concrete and brick masonry structure at different time were proposed by the simulation of single component. Additionally, the overpressure of shock wave, caving velocity and kinetic energy were obtained. It shows that the caving can speed up to a maximum value of 152 m/s with the kinetic energy of 18 000 J, that means a great damage to personnel and equipment in the building. Under …

Improving Energy Savings And Peak Demand Reduction Estimates Using Ami Data For Utility Commercial Rebate Programs, Florida Solar Energy Center, Karen Fenaughty
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Solar reflective, or cool roofs, are a demonstrated method of reducing air conditioning energy, particularly in cooling-dominated climates. Similarly, efficient lighting or mechanical equipment replacement programs have a reputation for achieving large savings in c01mnercial buildings. Savings estimates for such measures have historically used monthly utility bills, which only provide a macroscopic view of utility program savings. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is commonly used in the U.S. by utilities for residential and commercial customers and provides not only a valuable record of changing premise energy use and demand profiles but in much greater detail than utility bills, if desired.

Characterization Of Mechanical Ventilation Systems In New Us Homes: What Types Of Systems Are Out There And Are They Functioning As Intended?, Florida Solar Energy Center, Eric Martin
FSEC Energy Research Center®
As the airtightness of homes improves to meet energy efficiency goals, it becomes more important for mechanical ventilation systems to help maintain a comfortable and healthy indoor air environment. ASHRAE Standard 62.2 provides national guidance for mechanical ventilation system design and installation, however adoption of those guidelines into local building codes has occurred at different rates. Once provisions for mechanical ventilation are adopted in a local code, are mechanical ventilation systems properly designed, installed, commissioned and operated according to code or above-code program requirements? This paper presents results from field studies that include characterization of whole house mechanical ventilation (WHMV) …

Prototype Instrument Development For Measuring Directionality Of Aerosol Light Scattering, Esther K. Monroe
Prototype Instrument Development For Measuring Directionality Of Aerosol Light Scattering, Esther K. Monroe
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Investigation of aerosol interactions with electromagnetic waves provides insights into the scattering particles. Aerosol phase function, an angular distribution of scattered light, is a value required to calculate parameters used in direct radiative forcing (DRF) models in the atmosphere. Currently no direct measurement of phase function is available hence it is estimated from ground observations such as backscatter fraction b and subsequently relating the parameters via Henyey-Greenstein (HG) approximation. This method has shown to introduce errors in radiation transfer models. HG phase function, in particular, does not account for particle microphysical properties such as shape and refractive index. Given the …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Exergames are serious games that involve physical exertion and are thought of as a form of exercise by using novel input models. Exergames are promising in improving the vestibular differences of children with autism but often lack of adaptation mechanisms that adjust the difficulty level of the exergame. In this paper, we present the design and development of Circus in Motion, a multimodal exergame supporting children with autism with the practice of non-locomotor movements. We describe how the data from a 3D depth camera enables the tracking of non-locomotor movements allowing children to naturally interact with the exergame . A …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
According to the requirements of international maritime organization model course 7.03, electronic navigation systems are essential for project pilots. Global positioning system (GPS) is currently the most widely used electronic navigation equipment. However, because of the frequent blockages of GPS signals in complex environments, obtaining a precise and real-time position is difficult. To satisfy the requirement of effective and stable positioning of ship berthing and unberthing, another independent navigation system, inertial navigation system (INS), was adopted. In this study, we developed a 2-dimension (2D) GPS/INS-integrated system by using the constraint of a ship moving on a plane. If GPS signals …

Automatic Polyhedral Mesh Generation For Ship Resistance Based On The Locally Refined Cartesian Cut-Cell Method, Kwang-Leol Jeong, Dae-Won Seo
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper introduces an automatic grid generation algorithm, based on a locally refined cut-cell method, to calculate ship resistance. Sharp edges and apexes are not accurately expressed in the cut-cell method, and the accuracy of the calculation in the turbulence boundary layer is lower than that of other body-fitted methods. In this study, an automatic mesh generation method is developed to effectively represent edge and apex, and a boundary layer grid generation algorithm is developed to generate meshes that improve the accuracy of ship resistance simulation. To validate the method, the resistances of the KRISO container ship and Japan bulk …

New Modeling Approaches For The Prediction Of Combustion Pollutants, Phillip R. Johnson
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Combustion processes are ubiquitous to human technological development and provide many benefits such as large-scale power generation for electricity and transportation along with residential and commercial heating for manufacturing, cooking, and warmth. However, these various processes can also have harmful effects on human health and the environment via emission of CO2 and other pollutants such as NOx and particulate matter (PM; often in the form of soot). For these reasons, there is a continued need for controlling, improving, and optimizing combustion processes. Modeling of these processes provides powerful insights into system-level dynamics and their control. Due to the size and …

Domain Specific Computing In Tightly-Coupled Heterogeneous Systems, Anthony Michael Cabrera
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Over the past several decades, researchers and programmers across many disciplines have relied on Moores law and Dennard scaling for increases in compute capability in modern processors. However, recent data suggest that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits is losing pace with Moores laws projection due to the breakdown of Dennard scaling at smaller semiconductor process nodes. This has signaled the beginning of a new “golden age in computer architecture” in which the paradigm will be shifted from improving traditional processor performance for general tasks to architecting hardware that executes a class of applications in a …

Convex Relaxations For Particle-Gradient Flow With Applications In Super-Resolution Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy, Hesam Mazidisharfabadi
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) techniques have become advanced bioanalytical tools by quantifying the positions and orientations of molecules in space and time at the nanoscale. With the noisy and heterogeneous nature of SMLM datasets in mind, we discuss leveraging particle-gradient flow 1) for quantifying the accuracy of localization algorithms with and without ground truth and 2) as a basis for novel, model-driven localization algorithms with empirically robust performance. Using experimental data, we demonstrate that overlapping images of molecules, a typical consequence of densely packed biological structures, cause biases in position estimates and reconstruction artifacts. To minimize such biases, we develop …

Characterizing And Modeling The Progressive Damage Of Off-Axis Thermoplastic Plies: Effect Of Ply Confinement, Ditho Pulungan, Arief Yudhanto, Gilles Lubineau
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Although the mechanisms of degradation are, overall, quite similar between thermoset and thermoplastic composites, thermoplastic laminates exhibit a higher ductility. Because of that, classical models developed for thermosets fail in predicting accurately the response of thermoplastic-based laminates. Here, we demonstrate that simulations based on the properties identified on isolated thermoplastics unidirectional plies, as usually done for thermosets, result in large errors. This is explained by the significant load-bearing capacity of the ply in the transverse direction that remains even after the first-ply failure, as a result of the confinement provided by adjacent plies. This effect also exists in thermosets, but …

Design Of An Optimal Adaptive Intelligent Control Scheme For Statcom In A Series Compensated Wind Farm, Fei Wang, Kai-Hung Lu, Qiangqiang Xu, Ziwen Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper proposes a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) for use with a self-excited induction generator (SEIG)-based wind farm. The STATCOM applies a damping controller based on an optimal adaptive intelligent controller (OAIC) comprising the critical network, the functional linkbased Elman neural network (FLENN), and the genetic algorithm hybrid time-varying particle swarm optimization (GAHTVPSO) algorithm. The OAIC improves the damping power oscillations in the SEIG-based series-compensated wind farm system. The node-connecting weights of the proposed FLENN and the critical network are trained online via a backpropagation (BP) algorithm, and the GAHTVPSO adjusts the learning rates of the BP algorithm to improve …

A Machine Learning Framework For Drop-In Volume Swell Characteristics Of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Shane Kosir, Joshua Heyne, John Graham
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
A machine learning framework has been developed to predict volume swell for 10 non-metallic materials submerged in neat compounds. The non-metallic materials included nitrile rubber, extracted nitrile rubber, fluorosilicone, low temp fluorocarbon, lightweight polysulfide, polythioether, epoxy (0.2 mm), epoxy (0.04 mm), nylon, and Kapton. Volume swell, a material compatibility concern, serves as a significant impediment for the minimization of the greenhouse gas emissions of aviation. Sustainable aviation fuels, the only near and mid-term solution to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, are limited to low blend limits with conventional fuel due to material compatibility issues (i.e. O-ring swell). A neural network was …

Aging Effects On Arterial Mechanics And Matrix Remodeling, Jie Hawes
Aging Effects On Arterial Mechanics And Matrix Remodeling, Jie Hawes
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Large elastic arteries are a composite structure composed of cells and extracellular matrix proteins. Passive arterial mechanical behavior is determined by the composition of extracellular matrix proteins, in particular elastin and collagen. Elastin provides reversible elasticity to the large elastic arteries during cyclic loading and dampens the pulsatile flow from the left ventricle, reducing the workload on the heart and protecting the end organs. Disorganization and insufficiency of elastin alters the passive mechanical behavior of the large arteries. The arterial wall responds to changes in elastin organization or amount through matrix remodeling. Aging causes elastin fragmentation and degradation which changes …

Particle Studies In The Lab And Pilot-Scale Coal Combustion Systems, Dishant Khatri
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In the past century, coal contributed more to the global electricity supply than any other source. Currently, it alone accounts for over 35% of the global electricity supply. Though coal is globally well-distributed and can provide cheap, stable, and reliable energy on demand, it emits a large amount of carbon dioxide—a greenhouse gas responsible for global warming. Additionally, it is a major source of particulate matter (PM) pollution. Thus, in recent years, to reduce the impact of coal on climate, several policies have been introduced to phase out coal. However, replacing coal with intermittent renewables has led to a reduction …

Air pollutants directly or indirectly impact human health and the environment. Large quantities of CO2, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter are emitted from combustion systems, and cause climate change, smog formation, and pose serious health risks. The increasing demand for the remediation of air pollutants at the source has drawn much attention to the use of advanced materials due to their high reactivities and special properties. In order to achieve the successful application of advanced materials for the remediation of problematic emissions, three aspects, (1) synthesis method, (2) characterization of materials’ structural properties, and (3) evaluation of materials’ …
Microrna Gene Expression States Underlying Individual Variation In Aging And Lifespan In Isogenic C. Elegans, Holly Kinser
Microrna Gene Expression States Underlying Individual Variation In Aging And Lifespan In Isogenic C. Elegans, Holly Kinser
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Average lifespan differs greatly between species, but lifespan among same-species individuals is also highly variable. While much effort has been devoted to uncovering longevity-associated traits and lifespan-extending perturbations in humans and model organisms, how differences in lifespan arise between individuals is unknown. Studies of human identical twins demonstrate that surprisingly little of the variation in lifespan between individuals can be explained by genetics and shared environment. Furthermore, even genetically identical C. elegans reared in highly homogeneous environments display a degree of variability in lifespan similar to that of outbred human populations. Thus, longevity must be determined at least in part …
Structural Organization And Chemical Activity Revealed By New Developments In Single-Molecule Fluorescence And Orientation Imaging, Tianben Ding
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Single-molecule (SM) fluorescence and its localization are important and versatile tools for understanding and quantifying dynamical nanoscale behavior of nanoparticles and biological systems. By actively controlling the concentration of fluorescent molecules and precisely localizing individual single molecules, it is possible to overcome the classical diffraction limit and achieve 'super-resolution' with image resolution on the order of 10 nanometers.
Single molecules also can be considered as nanoscale sensors since their fluorescence changes in response to their local nanoenvironment. This dissertation discusses extending this SM approach to resolve heterogeneity and dynamics of nanoscale materials and biophysical structures by using positions and orientations …
Growth Of Small Particles In Nonequilibrium Plasmas, Necip Berker Üner
Growth Of Small Particles In Nonequilibrium Plasmas, Necip Berker Üner
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Nonequilibrium plasma (NEP) is an extraordinary environment for material synthesis. NEP is comprised of hot electrons with temperatures greater than 10000 K and of cold ions and neutrals that are usually at few hundred kelvins above room temperature. Due to this large difference in species’ temperatures, the assumption of local thermal equilibrium does not hold in NEP. Therefore, NEP can act as a unique processor of mass, and it can transform materials along pathways that are not accessible by methods wherein local thermal equilibrium is valid. For decades, NEPs have been employed in the semiconductor industry to manufacture many thin …
