Analyzing The Safety Effects Of Edge Lane Roads For All Road Users, Marcial F. Lamera
Analyzing The Safety Effects Of Edge Lane Roads For All Road Users, Marcial F. Lamera
Master's Theses
This thesis acts as one of the first studies that analyzes the safety effects of Edge Lane Roads (ELR) for all road users. This is important since ELRs can be a solution to many issues, such as alleviating congestion, increasing multimodality along roadways, and reducing maintenance costs. ELRs in both North America and Australia were observed. Starting with the North American ELRs, the following study designs were employed to estimate the safety of ELRs: (a) yoked comparison where each ELR installation was matched with at least two comparable 2-lane roads to serve as comparison sites and (b) an Empirical Bayes …

Exploration And Comparison Of Image-Based Techniques For Strawberry Detection, Yongxin Liu
Master's Theses
Strawberry is an important cash crop in California, and its supply accounts for 80% of the US market [2]. However, in current practice, strawberries are picked manually, which is very labor-intensive and time-consuming. In addition, the farmers need to hire an appropriate number of laborers to harvest the berries based on the estimated volume. When overestimating the yield, it will cause a waste of human resources, while underestimating the yield will cause the loss of the strawberry harvest [3]. Therefore, accurately estimating harvest volume in the field is important to farmers. This paper focuses on an image-based solution to detect …

Change Management In Construction: Necessity, Obstacles,And Suggested Solutions, Ihab M. H. Saad
The Professional Constructor
The construction industry is one of the major harbingers of the economy of any industrialized nation. Its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product is undeniable. The major economic downturn that lasted from 2008 to 2011 resulted in a lot of change in the industry personnel at both the administration and labor force levels. This resulted in expediting the retirement of a generation of seasoned professionals, and creating a gap in the ranks of construction firms that is still to be completely filled. Similar impacts followed the uncertainty resulting recently from Covid-19 and the economic instability and uncertainty it caused. One …

Pert, Cpm And The Tangled History Of Network Scheduling, Charles Christopher Smith, Vivek Sharma, Gregory B. Baecher
The Professional Constructor
The origins of two network scheduling techniques: The Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT); and the Critical Path Method (CPM) are examined. Prior accounts hold that each are different and were created separately. PERT, developed within the U. S. Navy’s highly classified POLARIS nuclear missile program which began in 1955. CPM, the creation of American industrial concerns E. I. du Pont de Nemours (du Pont) and Remington Rand UNIVAC. With the objective of settling “an acrimonious dispute over parentage,” this research examines the literature and the original forms of PERT and CPM noting their ‘dead ring’ resemblances, synchronous development timelines, while …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Electric Vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure are starting to become commonplace in major cities around the world. For logistics providers to adopt an EV fleet, there are many factors up for consideration, such as route planning for EVs with limited travel range as well as long-term planning of fleet size. In this paper, we present a genetic algorithm to perform route planning that minimises the number of vehicles required. Specifically, we discuss the challenges on the violations of constraints in the EV routing problem (EVRP) arising from applying genetic algorithm operators. To overcome the challenges, techniques specific to addressing the …

Low Complexity Method Based On Fc-Ce-Slm For Papr Reduction In Ofdm System, Ce Ji, Lijuan Wang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Selected mapping (SLM) algorithm uses Cross Entropy (CE) algorithm to get the most optimal sign sequence so that SLM can make the effect of PAPR Reduction achieve optimum. However, it needs too many times iterative computations, so it will increase the complexity of the algorithm. In order to solve this problem, a fast convergence factor in the CE-SLM algorithm was introduced to make the sampling probability converge to 0 or 1 quickly in the system, which reduced the iterative times of getting the optimal sign sequence. Computer simulation results show that the approved algorithm reduces the iterative times of …

Behavior Recognition Combining Regional Optical Flow Features And Temporal Templates, Manyi Wang, Yaling Song, Li Yu, Zhang Liang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: A method was proposed to recognize human behavior, which combined the wavelet moments of temporal templates and the speed feature by optical flow. The wavelet moments are not only rotation, translation and scale invariance, but also have the multi-scale characteristics of wavelet. The shape feature of the motion history image and motion energy image can be described. To simple motions, it's effectively, but it can't present the speed information. Regional optical flow was calculated to describe the direction and amplitude features of motion by Lucas-Kanade algorithm. It could make up shortcomings of wavelet moment without speed information. Being …
Retention Of Amorphous Silica In Rice Hulls At High Temperatures, Takeshi Okutani
Retention Of Amorphous Silica In Rice Hulls At High Temperatures, Takeshi Okutani
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Rice hulls contain around 20 wt% amorphous silica (rice hull silica). Rice hullsilica containing no potassium impurity crystallized from amorphous silica to cristobaliteat 1300C. When a small amount of MgO or -Fe2O3 or Al2O3 were added to the rice hull silica, the rice hull silica crystallized to cristobalite at 1500C. MgO, -Fe2O3 and Al2O3 diffused to silica as Mg2+, Fe3+ and Al3+ at high temperatures. These ions broke the SiO4 tetrahedron network, so that the amorphous state of rice hull silica was maintained. As sintering occurred at 1500C in rice hull silica mixed with additives such as MgO, the melting …

© 2020, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature. Levulinic acid (LA) is currently one of the most promising chemicals derived from biomass. However, its large-scale production is hampered by the challenges in biomass hydrolysis and the poor selectivity due to the formation of humins (HUs). This study addresses these challenges using the biorefinery concept of biomass fractionation. A three-step process (pretreatment, delignification, and acid-catalyzed conversion) was optimized to produce LA from SCB considering the yield (YLA), efficiency (ELA), and concentration of LA (CLA) as functions of temperature, reaction time, acid concentration, and solids loading. By means of a …

We measure the birefringence of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of cadmium silicon phosphide via the Z-scan technique at near and mid-infrared wavelengths. We discuss the implications of the NLO properties on optical parametric amplifier performance. We find that the nonlinear absorption does reduce the conversion efficiency, while the nonlinear refraction has a negligible effect.
