Design Of Micro-Strip Antenna Based On Step-Like Electromagnetic Band-Gap Structure To Improve Bandwidth And Gain, Zhigang Xiao, Jiang Yao, Shaoquan Yin

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Design of a micro-strip antenna based on electromagnetic band-gap structure can significantly improve the bandwidth and gain of the antenna. EBG structure is used to suppress the surface wave propagation and increase the radiation gain of the antenna. At the same time, the antenna substrate thickness increase is beneficial to expand the bandwidth of the antenna. According to the actual need, the EBG and the antenna can use diffident substrate. The method can replace the traditional choke ring antenna and significantly reduce the antenna size without sacrificing the performance of the antenna.

This method could guarantee the robustness when external atmospheric turbulence and itself parameter matrices perturbation caused by the flight condition variation existed. The results show that for both the nominal …

Offshore oil projects have many different and unique characteristics, such as larger project size, higher number of scopes, and higher complexity. In fact, offshore oil projects described as mega projects are ones that require significant assessment and acquisition methods in order to reduce risks and failures. Traditionally, cash flow analysis and return on investment are the most known factors to evaluate offshore oil projects. However, there are several other internal and external factors that affect the overall performance of offshore oil projects. A comprehensive approach and advanced tools are required to evaluate these factors that can have a significant impact …

Analog Statistical Design For Manufacturability, Yu-Shan Wang Sep 2020

Analog Statistical Design For Manufacturability, Yu-Shan Wang

Dissertations and Theses

The manufacturing yield, overkill, and defect level limit the feasibility of analog circuits in SoCs. The conventional method of handling process and environmental variation is to assign a design margin such that the design meets specifications at several processes and environmental corners. However, checking only extreme corners limits performance in comparison to the more rigorous statistical approach of the computing manufacturing and quality figure of merit. The statistical approach requires transistor-level simulation of hundreds or even thousands of samples, not just a few corners, and thus is very time consuming.

This research offers a method for reducing the time required …

Theoretical And Experimental Validation Of A Cubesat's L-Band Communication System, Evangelos Mastrogiannis Sep 2020

Theoretical And Experimental Validation Of A Cubesat's L-Band Communication System, Evangelos Mastrogiannis

Dissertations and Theses

An L-band uplink communication system was designed and validated in the lab for a CubeSat satellite operating in low Earth orbit (LEO). This paper investigates communication link analysis, discusses the design strategy for an inexpensive CubeSat receiver operating in L-band with a moderate power Earth station transmitter, and validates the link budget with prototype hardware using an anechoic chamber.

A receiver's required carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) establishes the basis for a link budget. The requirement for a digital communication link is set by the bit-error-rate (BER) requirement of a chosen communication protocol which is inversely related to the energy per bit …

"Identification And Characterization Of Genetic Determinants In Bacteria Involved In Froth Formation At Natural Water Bodies", Swathi A

Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal Theses and Dissertations

Industrialization, modernization, rapid urbanization, and unscientific disposal of inadequately treated sewage and effluent from the various source into surface water bodies has been a major concern leading to water pollution. Frothing of lakes and foam related issues is one such emerging environmental concern in South India. Although several researchers have dealt with the characterization of physical and chemical parameters to understand the mechanism of foam formation, the role of biotic factors has been largely ignored. The main objective of this project is to identify the bacteria present in the froth forming lakes, to identify and characterize the biosurfactant of the …

Cost Effective And Non-Intrusive Occupancy Detection In Residential Building Through Machine Learning Algorithm, Chenli Wang Sep 2020

Cost Effective And Non-Intrusive Occupancy Detection In Residential Building Through Machine Learning Algorithm, Chenli Wang

Engineering Ph.D. Theses

Residential and commercial buildings consume more than 40% of energy and 76% of electricity in the U.S. Buildings also emit more than one-third of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, which is the largest sector. A significant portion of the energy is wasted by unnecessary operations on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, such as overheating/overcooling or operation without occupants. Wasteful behaviors consume twice the amount of energy compared to energy-conscious behaviors. Many commercial buildings utilize a building management system (BMS) and occupancy sensors to better control and monitor the HVAC and lighting system based on occupancy information. However, the complicated …

Effects Of Solid Lubricants On Properties Of Al-Si-Sic Composite Powderproduced By Gas Atomization Technique, Haris Rudianto, Sang Sun Yang, Yong Jin Kim, Ivo Dlouhy, Wahyu Caesarendra

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Al-Si-SiC composites powder was analyzed in this research. The powder was made by gas atomizing process. Powder characterization was done to observe its morphology, particle size distribution and thermal properties. Effects of lubricants were intensively investigated in this research with compositions and pressure variables. It is assumed that higher amount of solid lubricant put into the powder, the lower ejection force needed to take out compacted powder. Finding appropriate solid lubricant is necessary to improve green and sintering properties. EBS (ethylene bis stearamide), aluminum stearate, zinc stearate and paraffin wax were used for investigation. Sintering under ultra high purity nitrogen …

Evaluating The Potential Of Drone Swarms In Nonverbal Hri Communication, Kasper Grispino, Damian Lyons, Truong-Huy Nguyen Sep 2020

Evaluating The Potential Of Drone Swarms In Nonverbal Hri Communication, Kasper Grispino, Damian Lyons, Truong-Huy Nguyen

Faculty Publications

Human-to-human communications are enriched with affects and emotions, conveyed, and perceived through both verbal and nonverbal communication. It is our thesis that drone swarms can be used to communicate information enriched with effects via nonverbal channels: guiding, generally interacting with, or warning a human audience via their pattern of motions or behavior. And furthermore that this approach has unique advantages such as flexibility and mobility over other forms of user interface. In this paper, we present a user study to understand how human participants perceived and interpreted swarm behaviors of micro-drone Crazyflie quadcopters flying three different flight formations to bridge …
