Implementing Project Management Software Into A Small Residential Construction Company, Collin Peter Martin
Implementing Project Management Software Into A Small Residential Construction Company, Collin Peter Martin
Construction Management
Over the past twenty years, the popularity of web-based project management software in the construction industry has grown tremendously. Today, there are a variety of different project management software companies that aim to specifically serve the construction industry. Many construction companies have committed significant financial and personnel resources to the implementation of project management software. The largest users of project management software in the construction industry are large commercial and/or heavy civil construction firms. This is because of the large and complex nature of the projects these companies typically work on. Small residential construction companies deal with projects that are …

Construction Management
The objective of my senior project is to find a solution for the growing amount of improperly disposed cigarette butts on our planet. To accomplish this, I created and tested concrete cylinders mixed with different amounts of used cigarettes. It is my goal that we will be able to recycle cigarette butts and incorporate them into our everyday concrete use. By adding cigarettes to our mixes, I also understand their will be concerns with its potential strength. However with this in mind, it is my intention that these current mixes will only be used for non-structural concrete. In the following, …

A Family Of High Voltage Gain Three-Level Step-Up Converters For Photovoltaic Module Integration Applications, Ahmad Alzahrani, Pourya Shamsi, Mehdi Ferdowsi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes a family of step-up three-level DC-DC converter topologies suitable for photovoltaic panel integration applications. The proposed family is suitable to convert the 10-30 V from photovoltaic panels to a 150 V direct current distribution bus. The proposed family enhances the three-level topology in terms of the voltage gain, power density, and filtering requirements at the input level. The filtration is reduced by interleaving. The three-level boost converter's voltage gain is enhanced by utilizing several options such as switched capacitor cells, switched inductor cells, and flyback transformers or coupled inductors. The enhancement techniques are illustrated by providing the …

A low-cost, wideband printed circuit boards (PCBs) manufactured antenna is proposed in this letter for 5G/6G antenna-in-package (AiP) applications with wideband common-mode current (surface-wave) choking characteristics. The antenna is based on a grounded, wideband, high-efficiency electromagnetic structure (WHEMS) and a backing cavity, in which a radiating choke is introduced. By changing the choking condition of a quarter-wavelength, widely applied in traditional low-frequency baluns, wideband common-mode current suppression is achieved. The enclosing wall of the backing cavity is realized by a combination of isolated grounded vias and connected grounded vias based on current polarization on the wall. Finally, a 22% impedance …

An Exercise Device Used To Achieve Bone Formation Metrics For The Strengthening Of The Proximal Femur., Sean P. Coyle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Lateral falls often lead to hip fracture particularly in the elderly who have low bone mineral density. These fractures frequently lead to indirect mortality soon after injury. Normal use over the course over a lifetime leads to optimized adaptation of the bone in the proximal femur according to normal loading. A lateral fall generates non-normal, lateral loading at the proximal hip where the bone has not adapted to withstand such loading. The resulting fracture is generated by reversed strains on the bone tissue in the femoral neck in the hip in contrast to vertical, quotidian loading. Modern practices for preventing …

During the pandemic period caused by Coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020, the airlines have parked or stored their fleets partially or wholly worldwide. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimated a major downsize in approximately 65% of the worldwide airline fleet's airline operational activity at the end of April 2020. With that said, mechanical and electrical systems, when stopped during long periods, can deteriorate by corrosion, contamination, discharge, and oxidation (Boeing, 1998). During the aircraft parking or storage process, it is not different (Airbus, 2020). This study aims to understand how much the aircraft performance and reliability are affected by parking …

Strain-stress relationships for physical properties are of interest for heteroepitaxial material systems, where strain and stress are inherent due to thermal expansion and lattice mismatch. We report linear perturbation theory strain and stress relationships for optical phonon modes in monoclinic crystals for strain and stress situations which maintain the monoclinic symmetry of the crystal. By using symmetry group analysis and phonon frequencies obtained under various deformation scenarios from density-functional perturbation theory calculations on β-Ga2O3, we obtain four strain and four stress potential parameters for each phonon mode. We demonstrate that these parameters are sufficient to …

New determination of the magnetic anisotropy from single crystals of (Fe1-xCox)2B alloys are presented. The anomalous temperature dependence of the anisotropy constant is discussed using the standard Callen-Callen theory, which is shown to be insufficient to explain the experimental results. A more material specific study using first-principles calculations with disordered moments approach gives a much more consistent interpretation of the experimental data. Since the intrinsic properties of the alloys with x=0.3-0.35 are promising for permanent magnets applications, initial investigation of the extrinsic properties are described, in particular the crystallization of melt spun ribbons with Cu, Al, …

CuInSe2 I-III-VI2 ternary is a semiconductor considered very good efficient solar energy conversion material. An organometallic pyrolysis method is used to prepare monodisperse CuInSe2 nanoparticles using a mixture of oleylamine, and trioctylphosphine, as capping materials. The particle shape changes to dot, rods or flowers occur via varying the reaction temperatures (160, 200, 220±C) respectively. The obtained particles have been characterized to determine the shape and size of CuInSe2 nanoparticles using HR-TEM and XRD. The optical and electronic properties of these particles have been investigated and discussed in detail. Then the different shapes of CuInSe …
Basis Set Truncation Further Clarifies Vibrational Coherence Spectra, Daniel B. Turner, Paul C. Arpin
Basis Set Truncation Further Clarifies Vibrational Coherence Spectra, Daniel B. Turner, Paul C. Arpin
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Coherent vibrational oscillations in femtosecond transient-absorption spectra have been interpreted since the 1990s using a model based on Gaussian wavepacket dynamics. The oscillations are often studied using probe-wavelength dependent plots of the oscillation amplitude and phase that are known as vibrational coherence spectra. Here we show that restricting the basis of the wavepacket to a small number of eigenstates clarifies several features in vibrational coherence spectra. Improving the understanding of vibrational coherence signatures will help distinguish them from signatures of electronic coherence that arise from measurements of strongly coupled excitonic states in molecular aggregates and light-harvesting proteins.

Single-vehicle, run-off-road (SVROR) crashes account for a significant portion of all road-related injuries and fatalities worldwide. However, no previous study has neither examined to what extent roadside design guidelines have been applied, nor (and most importantly) investigated whether having a compliant roadside design has a positive impact on reducing the likelihood of fatal injuries. Thus, the objectives of this research are i) to examine the level of roadside design compliance within the studied area based on the selected benchmark and ii) to investigate whether roadside design compliance has a positive impact on reducing the likelihood of fatal injuries in SVROR …

Direct 3d Printing Of Silica Doped Transparent Magnesium Aluminate Spinel Ceramics, John M. Pappas, Xiangyang Dong
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Transparent magnesium aluminate spinel ceramics were additively manufactured via a laser direct deposition method in this study. With a minimum porosity of 0.3% achieved, highly transparent spinel samples with the highest total optical transmittance of 82% at a wavelength of 632.8 nm, were obtained by a 3D printing approach. However, cracking was found to be a major issue affecting printed spinel samples. To control prevalent cracking, the effect of silica dopants was investigated. Increased silica dopants reduced average total crack length by up to 79% and average crack density by up to 71%. However, a high dopant level limited optical …

Efficient Yield Estimation Of Multiband Patch Antennas By Polynomial Chaos-Based Kriging, Leifur Leifsson, Xiaosong Du, Slawomir Koziel
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Yield estimation of antenna systems is important to check their robustness with respect to the uncertain sources. Since direct Monte Carlo sampling of accurate physics-based models can be computationally intensive, this work proposes the use of the polynomial chaos–Kriging (PC-Kriging) metamodeling method for fast yield estimation of multiband patch antennas. PC-Kriging integrates the polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) as the trend function of Kriging metamodel since the PCE is good at capturing the function tendency and Kriging is good at matching the observations at training points. The PC-Kriging method is demonstrated on two analytical cases and two multiband patch antenna cases …

Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (TPUs) are widely used in a variety of applications as a result of flexible and superior performance. However, few scholars pay close attention on the design and synthesis of TPUs through the self‐determined laboratory process, especially on definite of chemical structures and upon the influence on properties. To investigate the properties of synthesized modifier based on chemical structure, firstly each kind of unknown structure and composition ratio of TPUs was determined by using a new method. Furthermore, the thermal characteristics and mechanical properties of modifiers were exposed by thermal characteristics and mechanics performance tests. The experimental results …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Dimensions Of Product Similarity Used In Design By Analogy Of Electromechanical Products, Arnold Nkoane Tsoka
Theses and Dissertations
Analogical reasoning is known to be a core cognitive mechanism behind creative human tasks including the creativity in engineering design. Research shows that during product ideation, designers use analogy to transfer information from prior designs stored in their memory (the source of the analogy) to the task in hand (target of analogy). However, similar to any search process, the source product must be first identified as a potential candidate for analogy before this information transfer can take place. Two products can be similar along multiple dimensions such as their form, function, etc. The dimensions of similarity between two products that …

Feasibility Study Of A Mems Threshold-Pressure Sensor Based On Parametric Resonance: Experimental And Theoretical Investigations, Mark Pallay, Meysam Daeichin, Shahrzad Towfighian
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
A tunable threshold pressure sensor based on para- metric resonance of a microbeam subjected to electrostatic levitation is proposed. Parametric excitation can trigger a large amplitude vibration at twice the natural frequency if the mag- nitude of the driving force is large enough to overcome energy loss mechanisms in the system such as squeeze film damping. This causes a temporarily unstable response with a significant gain in oscillation amplitude over time until it is eventually capped by nonlinearities in the force or material or geometric properties. The instability divides the frequency region into two regions: distinct responses bounded by the …

Determination Of Construction Site Elevations Using Drone Technology, Yuhan Jiang, Yong Bai
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Image-based 3D-reconstruction techniques, such as drone photogrammetry, have been adopted to various construction operations. The challenge is determining the construction site elevation, which is the vertical distance from the ground to the camera, in real-time. This paper presents the research results of using two frame drone-based ortho-images to estimate the elevation of a construction site. This idea is derived from the stereo vision model for measuring distance of indoor scenes. The spatial resolution of the stereo vision is a positive correlation with its baseline, the distance between two cameras. However, a large baseline stereo cameras system is impossible for a …
