Prefilling Mylar Capacitor Edge Margins To Improve Capacitor Reliability And Size, Chase Kayser
Prefilling Mylar Capacitor Edge Margins To Improve Capacitor Reliability And Size, Chase Kayser
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Typical high-voltage, wound film-foil capacitors have large edge margins filled with air to prevent breakdown between foil electrodes. This arrangement is inefficient for energy density and leaves a volume where particulates may settle in an uncontrolled atmosphere. The reliability and size of high-voltage, wound film-foil capacitors could be improved by adding a material with higher breakdown strength into the edge margins. This will not only improve reliability and size but also act as a barrier to prevent foreign object debris (FOD), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and water from damaging the capacitor’s performance. This paper will discuss the process of determining …

Laser-Induced Modifications In Two-Dimensional Materials, Tariq Afaneh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted a growing interest in the lastdecade from the fundamental point of view as well as their potential applications in functional devices. Due to their high surface-to-volume ratio, the physical properties of 2D materials are very sensitive to the environmental factor such as surrounding media and illumination conditions (e.g. light-mater interaction). In the first part of this dissertation I will present recent advances in developing laser-assisted methods to tune the physical properties of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We demonstrate laser-assisted chemical modification ultrathin TMDs, locally replacing selenium by sulfur atoms. The photo-conversion process …

A binaural recording was created in both anechoic and echoic environments and subjective tests were conducted. Tests were repeated, with a virtual reality headset to virtually replicate the testing space. Results showed the effectiveness of binaural recording in recreating the perceived source locations in “3-D” space around a specified listening position in different conditions. Statistical …
Civilian Pepper Spray For Self Defense: Understanding User Perception And Impact Of Design On User Performance, David Strybel, Anil R. Kumar
Civilian Pepper Spray For Self Defense: Understanding User Perception And Impact Of Design On User Performance, David Strybel, Anil R. Kumar
Faculty Publications
Pepper spray is widely used in the US, and is marketed as an effective self-defense device. While pepper spray can be useful in deterring an attacker, many pepper spray owners do not have any experience using it. There is a dearth of published studies that focus on civilian pepper-spray use, not to mention first time pepper-spray users. A study to analyze pepper-spray designs with first-time users, to see how the design, specifically the safety mechanism, affects response time and overall performance would be helpful. The study was conducted in 2 parts – a survey to understand user perception, and a …

Life Cycle Assessment To Demonstrate How Automation Improves The Sustainability Performance Of An Underground Mining Operation, Kyle Moreau, Corey Laamanen, Ron Bose, Helen Shang, John A. Scott
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The worldwide move to introduce more automation into underground metal ore mining is currently aimed at improving both operational productivity and safety. We have used a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) as a novel approach for the industry to determine the beneficial impacts automation can also have on environmental performance using data collected on mine site productivity and energy consumption. The LCA looked at four impact categories: global warming potential, acidification, eutrophication, and human toxicity. When comparing key automated equipment to their traditional manual counterpart, all four impact categories experienced a reduction with automation and a subsequent improvement in sustainability …

In plant cytokinesis, de novo formation of a cell plate evolving into the new cell wall partitions the cytoplasm of the dividing cell. In our earlier chemical genomics studies, we identified and characterized the small molecule endosidin-7, that specifically inhibits callose deposition at the cell plate, arresting late-stage cytokinesis in arabidopsis. Endosidin-7 has emerged as a very valuable tool for dissecting this essential plant process. To gain insights regarding its mode of action and the effects of cytokinesis inhibition on the overall plant response, we investigated the effect of endosidin-7 through a nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) metabolomics approach. In …

Kirill Belashchenko Publications
We have probed directly the temperature and magnetic field dependence of pinned uncompensated magnetization at the interface of antiferromagnetic FeF2 with Cu, using FeF2-Cu-Co spin valves. Electrons polarized by the Co layer are scattered by the pinned uncompensated moments at the FeF2-Cu interface giving rise to giant magnetoresistance. We determined the direction and magnitude of the pinned uncompensated magnetization at different magnetic fields and temperatures using the angular dependencies of resistance. The strong FeF2 anisotropy pins the uncompensated magnetization along the easy axis independent of the cooling field orientation. Most interestingly, magnetic fields as …
Optical-Amplifier-Compatible Long-Distance Secure Key Generation Based On Random Phase Fluctuations For Wdm Systems, Ben Wu, Yue-Kai Huang
Optical-Amplifier-Compatible Long-Distance Secure Key Generation Based On Random Phase Fluctuations For Wdm Systems, Ben Wu, Yue-Kai Huang
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a secure key generation and distribution system that is compatible with optical amplifiers and standard wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems. The key is generated from the phase fluctuations induced by environmental instabilities. The key generation system is tested in a 240 km bidirectional fiber-pair link with multiple optical amplifiers. To demonstrate the compatibility with WDM systems, 38 WDM channels are transmitted together with the key distribution channel. The secret key is protected against eavesdropping and coherence detection attack by the wide-band property of the signal carrier and the fast-changing rate of the phase fluctuations.

The aim of this study was to determine the resilience of different passive cooling control strategies in delivering optimal comfort and energy scenarios in both current and future extreme conditions, for low energy indoor office spaces. Simulations were conducted using a calibrated TRNSYS 17 model of a nearly zero energy building. The performance of ten passive cooling control …
Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy With Consideration Of Battery Aging For Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Bin Zhou, Jeffrey Burl, Amir Rezaei
Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy With Consideration Of Battery Aging For Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Bin Zhou, Jeffrey Burl, Amir Rezaei
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) is a well-known energy management strategy for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV). ECMS is very computationally efficient since it yields an instantaneous optimal control. ECMS has been shown to minimize fuel consumption under certain conditions. But, minimizing the fuel consumption often leads to excessive battery damage. This paper introduces a new optimal control problem where the cost function includes terms for both fuel consumption and battery aging. The Ah-throughput method is used to quantify battery aging. ECMS (with the appropriate equivalence factor) is shown to also minimize the cost function that incorporates battery aging. Simulation …

Nature Of Problem-Solving Skills For 21st Century Stem Learners: What Teachers Need To Know, Paul Nnanyereugo Iwuanyanwu
Journal of STEM Teacher Education
Since the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution which calls for a new model of learning for the twenty-first century learners, it has been argued that the nature of problems that learners must solve in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) must also be transformed to enable new forms of learning skills that are needed to tackle complex global challenges. However, the question of how best to teach these skills purposefully and explicitly is largely overlooked. STEM education reformers recognize that the lecture method or traditional method of teaching is highly ineffective for teaching twenty-first century competencies and skills that …

First, a centrifugal microfluidic platform was built for automatically detecting trace oil pollution in water. …
Chicoreus Brunneus Seashells As A Catalyst In Rice Bran Biodiesel Production, Hoora Mazaheri
Chicoreus Brunneus Seashells As A Catalyst In Rice Bran Biodiesel Production, Hoora Mazaheri
Student Works (2020-2029)
Environmental pollution and the declining global supply of accessible fossil fuels are the key drivers to search for alternative energy sources. This study focused on developing a “green” and sustainable heterogenous calcium oxide (CaO) catalyst from Chicoreus Brunneus shells for biodiesel production from rice bran oil (RBO). Coastal people frequently collect these shells for food and shell crafts. Thus, by using seashell wastes, cost-efficient catalysts can be achieved for the biodiesel industry. The shells were calcinated, washed and dried to produce pure CaO catalyst. After that, CaO was converted into calcium methoxide (Ca(OCH3)2) and followed by loading onto zeolite support …

A Modelling Study For Smart Pigging Technique For Pipeline Leak Detection, Caitlyn Judith Thiberville
LSU Master's Theses
Although leak incidents continue, a pipeline remains the most reliable mode of transportation within the oil and gas industry. It becomes even more important today because the projection for new pipelines is expected to increase by 1 billion BOE through 2035. In addition, increasing number and length of subsea tiebacks face new challenges in term of data acquisition, monitoring, analysis, and remedial actions. Passive leak-detection methods commonly used in the industry have been successful with some limitations in that they often cannot detect small leaks and seeps. In addition to a thorough review of related topics, this study investigates how …

Real Records Scaling Factors Optimization To Fit The Syrian Design Spectra Using Genetic Algorithm, Seraj Jdyd
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
After selecting real seismic records it is necessary to scale these records to match the intensity of the earthquake expected for the site. Generally, scaling can be made by ground motions uniform scaling in time domain which is simply scaled up or down the ground motions uniformly to best match (in average) the target spectrum within a period range of interest. It’s an engineer’s job to find the best scaling factors to best match the target spectrum, which is a complex task, so we employed the Genetic Algorithm (GA) in finding those scaling factors to achieve the best results.

A New Method Of Statcom Controlling For Harmonic Mitigation And Power Factor Correction, Doha Jdeed
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
This paper presents a control algorithm of 3ph STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM). The algorithm depends on the accurate reference currents extraction from only the nonlinear load current spec-trum in frequency domain using Fast Fourier Transfer (FFT). Then the determined harmonics and reactive components of load current are added together to form the compensating reference signals, the PI controllers then generate signals which control the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) method. The simulation of the study is carried out under MATLAB/Simulink environment to show the usefulness of this control algorithm with nonlin-ear dynamic loads. It determines exactly the phase shift between the …

Study On The Viability Of Preparing Plaster Molds For Rapid Prototyping Of Complex Ceramic Parts Using The Lost Pla Method, Shelton F. Fowler Iv
Honors College Theses
In the field of metal casting, cast parts often require an internal cavity to be made to meet design requirements. Frequently, these interior surfaces are not manufacturable through standard machining processes, and even when possible, they would most likely involve expensive and time-consuming operations. In order to avoid these machining costs, expendable ceramic or sand cores are manufactured and placed into the mold to allow the direct casting of complex internal geometries. This research seeks to use relatively inexpensive plastic 3D printing technology and the lost PLA casting process for the production of low-cost and rapidly producible ceramic cores. A …

The U.S. is currently facing an opioid crisis. Naltrexone is a common treatment for drug addiction; it reduces the desire to take opiates. However, addicts often stop treatment or continue to use opioids while in treatment. This results in increased fatalities and associated costs. A Markov-chain model is presented to analyze the progression of opioid addiction to assist the medical community in developing appropriate treatments. The model includes patients who continue opiate use while on naltrexone (blocked patients) and those who use opiates after missing naltrexone doses (unblocked patients). The other types of patients are abstinent (the best-case scenario) and …
