A Computational Study On Aging Effect For Facial Expression Recognition, Elena Sönmez
A Computational Study On Aging Effect For Facial Expression Recognition, Elena Sönmez
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This work uses newly introduced variations of the sparse representation-based classifier (SRC) to challenge the issue of automatic facial expression recognition (FER) with faces belonging to a wide span of ages. Since facial expression is one of the most powerful and immediate ways to disclose individuals? emotions and intentions, the study of emotional traits is an active research topic both in psychology and in engineering fields. To date, automatic FER systems work well with frontal and clean faces, but disturbance factors can dramatically decrease their performance. Aging is a critical disruption element, which is present in any real-world situation and …

Design Of A Range-Segmented Cmos Current-Mode Exponential Circuit, Chih-Jen Cheng, Kuo-Jen Lin, Jwu-E Chen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A CMOS current-mode exponential circuit is designed by plugging candidate circuits into a Taylor's approximation circuit to make a multiple-segment circuit. The selection of candidate circuits is dependent on a large linearity range in each segment. The proposed range-segmented circuit is different from all segments constructed only by quadratic circuits or only by linear circuits. The proposed circuit was simulated using UMC 0.18~$\mu$m CMOS technology. The output linearity of the circuit is 56.7~dB for gain error less than 0.5~dB, and the --3~dB bandwidth of the circuit is between 69 and 150~MHz for input range from --63 to 198~$\mu$A.

A Method For Indoor Wi-Fi Location Based On Improved Back Propagation Neuralnetwork, Jinghui Chen, Chen Dong, Guorong He, Xiaoyu Zhang
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In order to achieve high precision on indoor location, a Wi-Fi indoor location method based on improved back propagation (BP) neural network is proposed. The classical BP neural network is optimized in real time by the ant colony optimization algorithm. Meanwhile, the momentum term is introduced to construct an improved four-layer BP neural network model. The model uses the Wi-Fi signal feature as the input of the BP neural network and succeeds in the area classification under multiple Wi-Fi signal features. The experimental results demonstrate that the improved BP neural network can increase the classification accuracy of the classifier effectively, …

A Light-Weight Solution For Blackhole Attacks In Wireless Sensor Networks, Bi̇lal Erman Bi̇lgi̇n, Selçuk Baktir
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Wireless sensors, which are smaller and cheaper, have started being used in many different applications. Military applications, health care and industrial monitoring, environmental applications, smart grids, and vehicular ad-hoc networks are some of the best known applications of wireless sensors. In some applications, especially military, environmental, and health care applications, it is required that the communication between sensor nodes be encrypted to achieve privacy and confidentiality. In this work, some modifications have been made to the ad-hoc on-demand distance vector routing protocol, mostly preferred in wireless sensor networks, to make data communications more reliable. The proposed routing protocol is shown …
Verifiable Dynamic Searchable Encryption, Mohammad Etemad, Alpteki̇n Küpcü
Verifiable Dynamic Searchable Encryption, Mohammad Etemad, Alpteki̇n Küpcü
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Using regular encryption schemes to protect the privacy of the outsourced data implies that the client should sacrifice functionality for security. Searchable symmetric encryption (SSE) schemes encrypt the data in a way that the client can later search and selectively retrieve the required data. Many SSE schemes have been proposed, starting with static constructions, and then dynamic and adaptively secure constructions but usually in the honest-but-curious model. We propose a verifiable dynamic SSE scheme that is adaptively secure against malicious adversaries. Our scheme supports file modification, which is essential for efficiently working with large files, in addition to the ability …

State-Space Identification Of Switching Linear Discrete Time-Periodic Systems Withknown Scheduling Signals, İsmai̇l Uyanik, Hasan Hamzaçebi̇, Mustafa Mert Ankarali
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we propose a novel frequency domain state-space identification method for switching linear discrete time-periodic (LDTP) systems with known scheduling signals. The state-space identification problem of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems has been widely studied both in the time and frequency domains. Indeed, there have been several studies that also concentrated on state-space identification of both continuous and discrete linear time-periodic (LTP) systems. The focus in this study is the family of LDTP systems that switch among a finite set of subsystems triggered by known periodic scheduling signals. We address the state-space identification of such systems in frequency domain …

Cloud-Supported Machine Learning System For Context-Aware Adaptive M-Learning, Muhammad Adnan, Asad Habib, Jawad Ashraf, Shafaq Mussadiq
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
It is a knotty task to amicably identify the sporadically changing real-world context information of a learner during M-learning processes. Contextual information varies greatly during the learning process. Contextual information that affects the learner during a learning process includes background knowledge, learning time, learning location, and environmental situation. The computer programming skills of learners improve rapidly if they are encouraged to solve real-world programming problems. It is important to guide learners based on their contextual information in order to maximize their learning performance. In this paper, we proposed a cloud-supported machine learning system (CSMLS), which assists learners in learning practical …

Design Of Energy Recovery Systems: Thermoelectric Combi Boiler Generator Andpower Analysis, Abdullah Hakan Yavuz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Gas-fired combi boilers are commonly used to meet the need for heating and general-purpose hot water in developing countries. In this study, a thermoelectric combi boiler generator (TECBG) was developed. When the boiler is operated, cold water flows through the cold surface of TECBG and enters the boiler. In the same way, it is used by flows through the hot surface of TECBG in heated water. Thus, temperature difference occurrs between the surfaces of TECBG. The temperature difference is converted into electrical energy by Seebeck effect. The proposed system was implemented on a domestic combi boiler. The maximum temperature difference …

Automatic generation control (AGC) also known as load frequency control plays a vital role in interconnected power system for frequency regulation. Electric vehicles (EVs) with battery as the storage device can participate in frequency regulation service. In practice, a large number of EVs are aggregated as a single unit called EV aggregator for participation in frequency regulation service in AGC system. Participation of EV aggregators in AGC system for frequency regulation will be encouraged in near future because EVs have less environmental pollution than the conventional vehicles. However, participation of EV aggregators in AGC system may introduce time delay which …

Design Optimization Using Dielectric Slab For Efficient Microwave Heating, Sofiya Ali Mekonnen, Si̇bel Yeni̇kaya
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, usage of a dielectric slab on the top and bottom sides, on the top side, and on the bottom side of a clay sample was presented as a means of improving heating efficiency in multimode applicator. In order to accomplish the optimization procedure, we used four different dielectric slab types having different thickness values. The simulated results show that by using additional dielectric slab it is possible to increase the electric field intensity inside the applicator and obtain higher power absorption rates within the sample and high-efficiency designs.

Electromagnetic Radiation Exposure Of Multioperator Co-Sited Urban Base Stations, Ni̇yazi̇ Korkut Uluaydin, Tomasz Dlugosz, Şaban Seli̇m Şeker
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Mobile network operators (MNOs) concurrently use different generations of wireless technologies. The base stations (BSs) of different technology generations are co-located in order to decrease operational costs. Furthermore, the MNOs cooperate in order to co-site their base stations. Such an urban site includes more than 25 actively radiating antennas on average with different frequencies and modulations. Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) measurements performed in such an environment may have reduced accuracy. In this paper, the authors propose a new approach for the measurement of EMR in multiple mobile technology interwoven urban BS sites, where more than one operator exists. The maintenance activities …
Unsupervised Deep Feature Embeddings For Speaker Diarization, Rehan Ahmad, Syed Zubair
Unsupervised Deep Feature Embeddings For Speaker Diarization, Rehan Ahmad, Syed Zubair
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Speaker diarization aims to determine ?who spoke when?? from multispeaker recording environments. In this paper, we propose to learn a set of high-level feature representations, referred to as feature embeddings, from an unsupervised deep architecture for speaker diarization. These sets of embeddings are learned through a deep autoencoder model when trained on mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) of input speech frames. Learned embeddings are then used in Gaussian mixture model based hierarchical clustering for diarization. The results show that these unsupervised embeddings are better compared to MFCCs in reducing the diarization error rate. Experiments conducted on the popular subset of the …

Limited-Data Automatic Speaker Verification Algorithm Using Band-Limitedphase-Only Correlation Function, Ángel Pedroza, José De La Rosa, José De Jesus Villa, Aldonso Becerra
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a new method to deal with automatic speaker verification based on band-limited phaseonly correlation (BLPOC) is proposed. The aim of this study is to validate the use of the BLPOC function as a new limited-data automatic speaker verification technique. Although some speaker verification techniques have high accuracy, efficiency usually depends on the extraction of complex theoretical information from speech signals and the amount of the data for training the algorithms. The BLPOC function is a high-accuracy biometric technique traditionally implemented in human identification by fingerprints (through image-matching). When applying the BLPOC function in automatic speaker verification through …
Fault-Tolerant Control Of A Pmsg-Based Wind Turbine Based On Parallelinterleaved Converters, Mohamed Abbes
Fault-Tolerant Control Of A Pmsg-Based Wind Turbine Based On Parallelinterleaved Converters, Mohamed Abbes
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Lowering the cost of wind energy has been one of the main objectives of the wind industry in the past years. To achieve this objective, considerable research efforts have been made to improve the availability of wind turbines. Recent statistical analyses have shown that frequency converters are among the most frequently failing components for variable speed wind systems. Therefore, several configurations were proposed in the literature to improve the availability of these generating devices. These configurations are mainly based on the redundancy of power converters (active and standby) or the converter bypass technique. However, for the special case of PMSG-based …

Blood pressure is the pressure by the blood to the vein wall. High blood pressure, which is called silent death, is the cause of nearly 13 % of mortality all over the world. Blood pressure is not only measured in the medical environment, but the blood pressure measurement is also a need for people in their daily life. Blood pressure estimation systems with low error rates have been developed besides the new technologies and algorithms. Blood pressure measurements are differentiated as invasive blood pressure (IBP) measurement and noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP) measurement methods. Although IBP measurement provides the most accurate …
Sparsity-Based Three-Dimensional Image Reconstruction For Near-Field Mimo Radar Imaging, Fi̇gen S. Oktem
Sparsity-Based Three-Dimensional Image Reconstruction For Near-Field Mimo Radar Imaging, Fi̇gen S. Oktem
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Near-field multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar imaging systems are of interest in diverse fields such as medicine, through-wall imaging, airport security, concealed weapon detection, and surveillance. The successful operation of these radar imaging systems highly depends on the quality of the images reconstructed from radar data. Since the underlying scenes can be typically represented sparsely in some transform domain, sparsity priors can effectively regularize the image formation problem and hence enable high-quality reconstructions. In this paper, we develop an efficient three-dimensional image reconstruction method that exploits sparsity in near-field MIMO radar imaging. Sparsity is enforced using total variation regularization, and the …

Atomic-Shaped Efficient Delay And Data Gathering Routing Protocol For Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks, Wajiha Farooq, Tariq Ali, Ahmad Shaf, Muhammad Umar, Sana Yasin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
High end-to-end delay is a major challenge in autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)-aided routing protocols for underwater monitoring applications. In this paper, a new routing protocol called atomic-shaped efficient delay and data gathering (ASEDG) has been introduced for underwater wireless sensor networks. The ASEDG is divided into two phases; in the first phase, the atomic-shaped trajectory model with horizontal and vertical ellipticals was designed for the movement of the AUV. In the second phase, two types of delay models were considered to make our protocol more delay efficient: member nodes (MNs) to MNs and MNs to gateway nodes (GNs). The MNs-to-MNs …

Method Of Limiting The Emissivity Of Wsn Networks, Tomasz Marciniak, Slawomir Bujnowski, Beata Marciniak, Zbigniew Lutowski
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a current topic of research that find usage in many applications from environmental monitoring and health protection to military applications. In this paper, analysis of the possibility of reducing the emissivity of radio sensor networks with the assumed transmission probability is discussed. This has a direct influence on power consumption by the nodes and network lifetime. A method based on introducing retransmissions on individual links creating paths between the nodes is presented. Two approaches are used in analyses, the first one being deterministic methods and the second one simulation. Both methods are used to determine …
Parallel Brute-Force Algorithm For Deriving Reset Sequences From Deterministic Incomplete Finite Automata, Uraz Cengi̇z Türker
Parallel Brute-Force Algorithm For Deriving Reset Sequences From Deterministic Incomplete Finite Automata, Uraz Cengi̇z Türker
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A reset sequence (RS) for a deterministic finite automaton $\mathscr{A}$ is an input sequence that brings $\mathscr{A}$ to a particular state regardless of the initial state of $\mathscr{A}$. Incomplete finite automata (FA) are strong in modeling reactive systems, but despite their importance, there are no works published for deriving RSs from FA. This paper proposes a massively parallel algorithm to derive short RSs from FA. Experimental results reveal that the proposed parallel algorithm can construct RSs from FA with 16,000,000 states. When multiple GPUs are added to the system the approach can handle larger FA.

Hgab3c: A New Hybrid Global Optimization Algorithm, Kamaljeet Kaur, Shakti Kumar, Jyoti Saxena
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper proposes a new optimization algorithm, namely HGAB3C, and presents its performance on the CEC-2014 test suite. In HGAB3C, simple genetic algorithms (GAs) and big bang-big crunch (BB-BC) are hybridized. The algorithm carries out global searches using a simple GA. In every generation the BB-BC algorithm is used to carry out local searches. The addition of local search has improved the capability of simple GAs significantly. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with 17 other optimization algorithms on all 30 functions of the CEC-2014 benchmark suite. It is observed that HGAB3C outperforms all other algorithms on 4 …
Test Case Prioritization And Distributed Testing Of Object-Oriented Program, Vipin Kumar K S, Sheena Mathew
Test Case Prioritization And Distributed Testing Of Object-Oriented Program, Vipin Kumar K S, Sheena Mathew
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Software systems have increased in size and complexity. As a result, object-oriented programming (OOP) is increasingly being used in the development of such large and complex systems. Traditional procedural programming requires a design method that follows a sequential flow of control, which is difficult to follow in the case of large systems design. Thinking in terms of real-life objects and their interactions makes design easier in the case of OOP. However, OOP comes with its own set of disadvantages and testing is one of them. Testing of such systems requires much more effort and time. In our approach the program …

Enhancing Face Pose Normalization With Deep Learning, Anil Çeli̇k, Nafi̇z Arica
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, we propose a hybrid method for face pose normalization, which combines the 3-D model-based method with stacked denoising autoencoder (SDAE) deep network. Instead of applying a mirroring operation for the invisible face parts of the posed image, SDAE learns how to fill in those regions by a large set of training samples. In the performance evaluation, we compare the proposed method to four different pose normalization methods and investigate their effects on facial emotion recognition and verification problems in addition to visual quality tests. Methods evaluated in the experiments include 2-D alignment, 3-D model-based method, pure SDAE-based …

Sentence Similarity Using Weighted Path And Similarity Matrices, Reza Javadzadeh, Morteza Zahedi, Marziea Rahimi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Sentence similarity is the task of assessing how similar the two snippets of text are. Similarity techniques are used extensively in clustering, summarization, classification, plagiarism detection etc. Due to a small set of vocabularies, sentence similarity is considered to be a difficult problem in natural language processing. There are two issues in solving this problem: (1) Which similarity techniques to be used for word pair similarity and (2) How to generalize that to sentence pairs. We have used the weighted path, a WordNet-based similarity assessment, and the paraphrase database to obtain word pair similarity values. Thereafter, we extracted maximum values …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Character recognition in natural scene images is a fundamental prerequisite for many text-based image analysis tasks. Generally, local image features are employed widely to recognize characters segmented from natural scene images. In this paper, a curvature-based global image feature and description for segmented character recognition is proposed. This feature is entirely dependent on the curvature information of the image pixels. The proposed feature is employed for segmented character recognition using Chars74k dataset and ICDAR 2003 character recognition dataset. From the two datasets, 1068 and 540 images of characters, respectively, are randomly chosen and 573-dimensional feature vector is synthesized per image. …

Trmor: A Finite-State-Based Morphological Analyzer For Turkish, Ayla Kayabaş, Helmut Schmi̇d, Ahmet Ercan Topcu, Özkan Kiliç
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Morphological analysis is an important component of natural language processing systems like spelling correction tools, parsers, machine translation systems, and dictionary tools. In this paper, we present TRMOR, a morphological analyzer for Turkish, which uses the SFST tool (Stuttgart Finite-State Transducer). TRMOR can be freely used for academic research (see http://www.cis.uni-muenchen.de/~schmid/tools/SFST/). It covers a large part of Turkish morphology including inflection, derivation, and some compounding. It uses morphotactic and morphophonological rules and a stem lexicon. We describe the morphological structure of Turkish, explain the phonological and morphological rules implemented in TRMOR, evaluate the system, and test it in special cases. …
