Computational Imaging Systems For High-Speed, Adaptive Sensing Applications, Yangyang Sun Jan 2019

Computational Imaging Systems For High-Speed, Adaptive Sensing Applications, Yangyang Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Driven by the advances in signal processing and ubiquitous availability of high-speed low-cost computing resources over the past decade, computational imaging has seen the growing interest. Improvements on spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions have been made with novel designs of imaging systems and optimization methods. However, there are two limitations in computational imaging. 1), Computational imaging requires full knowledge and representation of the imaging system called the forward model to reconstruct the object of interest. This limits the applications in the systems with a parameterized unknown forward model such as range imaging systems. 2), the regularization in the optimization process …

Stable, Highly Luminescent Perovskite-Polymer Composites For Photonics Applications, Juan He

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Metal halide perovskites (simplified as perovskites as below), particularly those in nanocrystal forms, have recently emerged as highly efficient, bandgap tunable photonics materials that can be easily solution processed at low cost for display, lighting or other energy conversion applications. However, the quick degradation of perovskite nanocrystals under external stresses or upon colloidal aggregations has been a major challenge for most applications where high reliability is normally required. In this thesis, we have explored a polymer swelling-deswelling microencapsulation (SDM) process that enables the dispersion, in-situ crystallization and subsequent surface passivation of perovskite nanocrystals in polymer matrices, and leads to ultrastable …

Computational Imaging With Limited Photon Budget, Zheyuan Zhu Jan 2019

Computational Imaging With Limited Photon Budget, Zheyuan Zhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The capability of retrieving the image/signal of interest from extremely low photon flux is attractive in scientific, industrial, and medical imaging applications. Conventional imaging modalities and reconstruction algorithms rely on hundreds to thousands of photons per pixel (or per measurement) to ensure enough signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio for extracting the image/signal of interest. Unfortunately, the potential of radiation or photon damage prohibits high SNR measurements in dose-sensitive diagnosis scenarios. In addition, imaging systems utilizing inherently weak signals as contrast mechanism, such as X-ray scattering-based tomography, or attosecond pulse retrieval from the streaking trace, entail prolonged integration time to acquire hundreds of …

Thanks to the ability to retrieve collective dynamics noninvasively, light scattering-based approaches are often the methods of choice. This dissertation discusses specific features of dynamic light scattering that utilizes spatio-temporal coherence gating. It is demonstrated that this optical fiber-based approach can operate over a large range of optical regimes and it has a number of unique capabilities such as an effective isolation of single scattering, a large sensitivity, and a high collection efficiency. Moreover, the approach also provides means for proper ensemble …

Longitudinal Investigation Of Disparity Vergence In Young Adult Convergence Insufficiency Patients, Patrick C. Crincoli Jan 2019

Longitudinal Investigation Of Disparity Vergence In Young Adult Convergence Insufficiency Patients, Patrick C. Crincoli

Theses

Vergence is a form of eye movement in which the eyes move in opposite directions to minimize retinal disparity. It allows an object at different distances from a viewer to appear single during binocular vision by centering the image on the fovea of each retina. Convergence insufficiency (CI) is a binocular disfunction in which blurry and double vision is a symptom. Office-based Vergence/Accommodative Therapy (OBVAT) has been shown to be effective in treating CI. A randomized clinical trial was designed to study fifty participants with CI before and after therapy using randomized therapy treatment (active and placebo), standardized clinical definitions, …

Effect Of Turbostratic Orientations And Confined Fluid On Mechanical Strength Of Bi-Layer Graphene: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Nil B. Dhankecha

Theses

The rise of graphene as a reinforcement material in the last decade has been exponential owing to its superior mechanical properties. This one atom thick 2D material is applicable in many industries related to nanomechanical, nanoelectronics and optical devices. Despite its strength and superior properties, single-layer graphene tends to be unstable in a free-standing form. This led to active use of bi-layer and multilayered graphene in many of the above-stated applications. Though properties of single-layer graphene have been extensively investigated both computationally as well as experimentally for over a decade, bilayer graphene and its turbostratic form are still under research. …

Solving Galbrun’S Equation With A Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method, Marcus Maeder, Andrew Peplow, Maximilian Meindl, Steffen Marburg

All Works

© S. Hirzel Verlag · EAA Over many years, scientists and engineers have developed a broad variety of mathematical formulations to investigate the propagation and interactions with flow of flow-induced noise in early-stage of product design and development. Beside established theories such as the linearized Euler equations (LEE), the linearized Navier–Stokes equations (LNSE) and the acoustic perturbation equations (APE) which are described in an Eulerian framework, Galbrun utilized a mixed Lagrange–Eulerian framework to reduce the number of unknowns by representing perturbations by means of particle displacement only. Despite the advantages of fewer degrees of freedom and the reduced effort to …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Person re-identification (Re-ID) has attracted extensive attention due to its potential to identify a person of interest from different surveillance videos. With the increasing amount of the surveillance videos, high computation and storage costs have posed a great challenge for the resource-constrained users. In recent years, the cloud storage services have made a large volume of video data outsourcing become possible. However, person Re-ID over outsourced surveillance videos could lead to a security threat, i.e., the privacy leakage of the innocent person in these videos. Therefore, we propose an efFicient privAcy-preseRving peRson Re-ID Scheme (FARRIS) over outsourced surveillance videos, which …

Optically Transparent Antennas And Filters For Smart City Communication, Ryan B. Green Jan 2019

Optically Transparent Antennas And Filters For Smart City Communication, Ryan B. Green

Theses and Dissertations

Incremental usage of mobile devices demand a new generation of wireless networks (5G) to provide faster data rates, more reliable coverage, monitor city infrastructure usage, and increase network capacity. The frequencies proposed for the upcoming 5G network would result in shorter broadcast distances and network dead zones, countered by incorporating transparent antennas into glass high rises. Transparent antennas possess, however a major challenge: low gain. This lower gain can be countered by means of employing antennas in an antenna array, boosting the gain and even giving the array the ability to beam form for the upcoming 5G network. The 5G …

Exploring And Expanding The One-Pixel Attack, Umairullah Khan, Walt Woods Jan 2019

Exploring And Expanding The One-Pixel Attack, Umairullah Khan, Walt Woods

Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience

In machine learning research, adversarial examples are normal inputs to a classifier that have been specifically perturbed to cause the model to misclassify the input. These perturbations rarely affect the human readability of an input, even though the model’s output is drastically different. Recent work has demonstrated that image-classifying deep neural networks (DNNs) can be reliably fooled with the modification of a single pixel in the input image, without knowledge of a DNN’s internal parameters. This “one-pixel attack” utilizes an iterative evolutionary optimizer known as differential evolution (DE) to find the most effective pixel to perturb, via the evaluation of …

Antenna Selection And Transmission Power For Energy Efficiency In Downlink Massive Mimo Systems, Adeeb Salh, Lukman Audah, Nor Shahida Mohd Shah, Shipun Anuar Hamzah, Hasan Saeed Mir Jan 2019

Antenna Selection And Transmission Power For Energy Efficiency In Downlink Massive Mimo Systems, Adeeb Salh, Lukman Audah, Nor Shahida Mohd Shah, Shipun Anuar Hamzah, Hasan Saeed Mir

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Massive multiinput-multioutput (M-MIMO) systems are crucial for maximizing energy efficiency (EE) in fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks. A M-MIMO system's achievable high data rate is highly related to the number of antennas, but increasing the number of antennas the system raises energy consumption. In this paper, we derive ergodic EE based on the optimal transmit power and joint optimization antenna selection (AS) with impact pilot reuse sequences (PRSs). We apply Newton's method and the Lagrange multiplier to derive jointly optimized AS and optimal transmission power under the effect of PRSs. The proposed algorithm prevents repeated searching for joint optimal AS and …

On Spectral Analysis Of The Internet Delay Space And Detecting Anomalous Routing Paths, Gonca Gürsun

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Latency is one of the most critical performance metrics for a wide range of applications. Therefore, it is important to understand the underlying mechanisms that give rise to the observed latency values and diagnose the ones that are unexpectedly high. In this paper, we study the Internet delay space via robust principal component analysis (RPCA). Using RPCA, we show that the delay space, i.e. the matrix of measured round trip times between end hosts, can be decomposed into two components: the estimated latency between end hosts with respect to the current state of the Internet and the inflation on the …

Measurement Of Network-Based And Random Meetings In Social Networks, Pranav Nerurkar, Madhav Chandane, Sunil Bhirud Jan 2019

Measurement Of Network-Based And Random Meetings In Social Networks, Pranav Nerurkar, Madhav Chandane, Sunil Bhirud

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Social networks are created by the underlying behavior of the actors involved in them. Each actor has interactions with other actors in the network and these interactions decide whether a social relationship should develop between them. Such interactions may occur due to meeting processes such as chance-based meetings or network-based (choice) meetings. Depending upon which of these two types of interactions plays a greater role in creation of links, a social network shall evolve accordingly. This evolution shall result in the social network obtaining a suitable structure and certain unique features. The aim of this work is to determine the …
