An Automated Negotiation System For Ecommerce Store Owners To Enable Flexible Product Pricing, Jake O'Halloran Jan 2019

An Automated Negotiation System For Ecommerce Store Owners To Enable Flexible Product Pricing, Jake O'Halloran

Dissertations

If a store owner wishes to sell a product online, they traditionally have two options for deciding on a price. They can sell the product at a fixesd price like the products sold on sites like Amazon, or they can put the product in an auction and let demand from customers drive the final sales price like the products sold on sites like eBay. Both options have their pros and cons. An alternative option for deciding on a final sales price for the product is to enable negotiation on the product. With this, there is a dynamic nature to the …

Comparing Defeasible Argumentation And Non-Monotonic Fuzzy Reasoning Methods For A Computational Trust Problem With Wikipedia, Ryan Kirwan Jan 2019

Comparing Defeasible Argumentation And Non-Monotonic Fuzzy Reasoning Methods For A Computational Trust Problem With Wikipedia, Ryan Kirwan

Dissertations

Computational trust is an ever-more present issue with the surge in autonomous agent development. Represented as a defeasible phenomenon, problems associated with computational trust may be solved by the appropriate reasoning methods. This paper compares two types of such methods, Defeasible Argumentation and Non-Monotonic Fuzzy Logic to assess which is more effective at solving a computational trust problem centred around Wikipedia editors. Through the application of these methods with real-data and a set of knowledge-bases, it was found that the Fuzzy Logic approach was statistically significantly better than the Argumentation approach in its inferential capacity.

Performance Comparison Of Hybrid Cnn-Svm And Cnn-Xgboost Models In Concrete Crack Detection, Sahana Thiyagarajan Jan 2019

Performance Comparison Of Hybrid Cnn-Svm And Cnn-Xgboost Models In Concrete Crack Detection, Sahana Thiyagarajan

Dissertations

Detection of cracks mainly has been a sort of essential step in visual inspection involved in construction engineering as it is the commonly used building material and cracks in them is an early sign of de-basement. It is hard to find cracks by a visual check for the massive structures. So, the development of crack detecting systems generally has been a critical issue. The utilization of contextual image processing in crack detection is constrained, as image data usually taken under real-world situations vary widely and also includes the complex modelling of cracks and the extraction of handcrafted features. Therefore the …

Exhibit Panels

When people talk about the future of Appalachia, they typically mean economic futures: What will happen to coal jobs? How will Appalachia diversify its economy? What about poverty? Stereotypes about our region represent our people as disinterested in education, and hostile to innovation, technology, and sustainability. We see a different story. This part of the exhibit looks at ways that Appalachians are taking their strong sense of culture, their linguistic distinctiveness, and their relationship to the natural world to imagine new futures in diverse industries, sustainable practices, and stronger education systems.

Analyzing The Adoption Rate Of Local Variable Type Inference In Open-Source Java 10 Projects, Clayton Liddell, Donghoon Kim

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Type Inference is used in programming languages to improve writability. In this paper, we will be looking more specifically at Local Variable Type Inference (LVTI). For those unfamiliar with LVTI, we will also give an in-depth explanation of what it is and how it works. There is a lot of debate surrounding Type Inference in modern day programming languages. More specifically, whether the costs associated with LVTI outweigh the benefits. It has found its way into many higher-level languages including C#, C++, JavaScript, Swift, Kotlin, Rust, Go, etc. In this paper, we will look at the usefulness of LVTI and …

Fuzzy Multicriteria Decision-Making Model For Time-Cost-Risk Trade-Off Optimization In Construction Projects, M. Ammar Alzarrad, Gary P. Moynihan, Muhammad T. Hatamleh, Siyuan Song Jan 2019

Fuzzy Multicriteria Decision-Making Model For Time-Cost-Risk Trade-Off Optimization In Construction Projects, M. Ammar Alzarrad, Gary P. Moynihan, Muhammad T. Hatamleh, Siyuan Song

Faculty Publications

As is often the case in project scheduling, when the project duration is shortened to decrease total cost, the total float is lost resulting in added critical or nearly critical activities. This, in turn, results in decreasing the probability of completing the project on time and increases the risk of schedule delays. To solve this problem, this research developed a fuzzy multicriteria decision-making (FMCDM) model. The objective of this model is to help project managers improve their decisions regarding time-cost-risk trade-offs (TCRTO) in construction projects. In this model, an optimization algorithm based on fuzzy logic and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) …

A Hybrid Droplet Vaporization-Chemical Surrogate Approach For Emulating Vaporization, Physical Properties, And Chemical Combustion Behavior Of Multicomponent Fuels, Alanna Y. Cooney, Simcha L. Singer Jan 2019

A Hybrid Droplet Vaporization-Chemical Surrogate Approach For Emulating Vaporization, Physical Properties, And Chemical Combustion Behavior Of Multicomponent Fuels, Alanna Y. Cooney, Simcha L. Singer

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The complex nature of multicomponent aviation fuels presents a daunting task for accurately simulating combustion behavior without incurring impractical computational costs. To reduce computation time, chemical fuel surrogates comprised of only a few species are used to emulate the combustion of complex pre-vaporized fuels. These surrogates are often unable to match the vaporization behavior and physical properties of the real fuel and fail to capture the effect of preferential vaporization on combustion behavior. Therefore, a computationally efficient, hybrid droplet vaporization-chemical surrogate approach has been developed which emulates both the physical and chemical properties of a multicomponent kerosene fuel. The droplet …

Straintronic Nanomagnetic Devices For Non-Boolean Computing, Md Ahsanul Abeed Jan 2019

Straintronic Nanomagnetic Devices For Non-Boolean Computing, Md Ahsanul Abeed

Theses and Dissertations

Nanomagnetic devices have been projected as an alternative to transistor-based switching devices due to their non-volatility and potentially superior energy-efficiency. The energy efficiency is enhanced by the use of straintronics which involves the application of a voltage to a piezoelectric layer to generate a strain which is ultimately transferred to an elastically coupled magnetostrictive nanomaget, causing magnetization rotation. The low energy dissipation and non-volatility characteristics make straintronic nanomagnets very attractive for both Boolean and non-Boolean computing applications. There was relatively little research on straintronic switching in devices built with real nanomagnets that invariably have defects and imperfections, or their adaptation …

Stability Analysis Of Transfer Alignment Filter Based On The Μ Theory, Lihua Zhu, Yu Wang, Lei Wang, Zhiqiang Wu Jan 2019

Stability Analysis Of Transfer Alignment Filter Based On The Μ Theory, Lihua Zhu, Yu Wang, Lei Wang, Zhiqiang Wu

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The performance of the transfer alignment has great impact on inertial navigation systems. As the transfer alignment is generally implemented using a filter to compensate the errors, its accuracy, rapidity and anti-disturbance capability are key properties to evaluate the filtering process. In terms of the superiority in dealing with the noise, H∞ filtering has been used to improve the anti-disturbance capability of the transfer alignment. However, there is still a need to incorporate system uncertainty due to various dynamic conditions. Based on the structural value theory, a robustness stability analysis method has been proposed for the transfer alignment to evaluate …

Uncertainty Theory Based Reliability-Centric Cyber-Physical System Design, Houbing Song, Ya Jiang, Mingzhe Wang, Xun Jiao, Hui Kong, Rui Wang, Yongxin Liu, Jian Wang, Jiaguang Sun Jan 2019

Uncertainty Theory Based Reliability-Centric Cyber-Physical System Design, Houbing Song, Ya Jiang, Mingzhe Wang, Xun Jiao, Hui Kong, Rui Wang, Yongxin Liu, Jian Wang, Jiaguang Sun

Publications

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are built from, and depend upon, the seamless integration of software and hardware components. The most important challenge in CPS design and verification is to design CPS to be reliable in a variety of uncertainties, i.e., unanticipated and rapidly evolving environments and disturbances. The costs, delays and reliability of the designed CPS are highly dependent on software-hardware partitioning in the design. The key challenges in partitioning CPSs is that it is difficult to formalize reliability characterization in the same way as the uncertain cost and time delay.

In this paper, we propose a new CPS design paradigm …

Scalable Honeycomb Top Contact To Increase The Light Absorption And Reduce The Series Resistance Of Thin Film Solar Cells, Mehdi Sadatgol, Nupur Bihari, Joshua M. Pearce, Durdo O. Guney

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

This paper presents a novel design for the top contact of thin film photovoltaic (PV) solar cells. The new top contact is formed by fabricating a 20nm thin honeycomb shaped silver mesh on top of an ultra-thin 13nm of indium tin oxide. The new top contact offers the potential to reduce the series resistance of the cell while increasing the light current via plasmonic resonance. Using the nano-bead lithography technique the honeycomb top contact was fabricated and electrically characterized. The experimental results verified the new contact reduces the sheet resistance by about 40%. Numerical simulations were then used to analyze …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Deep learning (DL)-based semantic segmentation methods have been providing state-of-the-art performance in the past few years. More specifically, these techniques have been successfully applied in medical image classification, segmentation, and detection tasks. One DL technique, U-Net, has become one of the most popular for these applications. We propose a recurrent U-Net model and a recurrent residual U-Net model, which are named RU-Net and R2U-Net, respectively. The proposed models utilize the power of U-Net, residual networks, and recurrent convolutional neural networks. There are several advantages to using these proposed architectures for segmentation tasks. First, a residual unit helps when training deep …
