A Computational Study Of Patch Implantation And Mitral Valve Mechanics, Dara Singh

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Myocardial infarction (i.e., a heart attack) is the most common heart disease in the United States. Mitral valve regurgitation, or the backflow of blood into the atrium from the left ventricle, is one of the complications associated with myocardial infarction. In this dissertation, a validated model of a sheep heart that has suffered myocardial infarction has been employed to study mitral valve regurgitation. The model was rebuilt with the knowledge of geometrical changes captured with MRI technique and is assigned with anisotropic, inhomogeneous, nearly incompressible and highly non-linear material properties. Patch augmentation was performed on its anterior leaflet, using a …

Trade-Off Balancing For Stable And Sustainable Operating Room Scheduling, Amin Abedini

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The implementation of the mandatory alternative payment model (APM) guarantees savings for Medicare regardless of participant hospitals ability for reducing spending that shifts the cost minimization burden from insurers onto the hospital administrators. Surgical interventions account for more than 30% and 40% of hospitals total cost and total revenue, respectively, with a cost structure consisting of nearly 56% direct cost, thus, large cost reduction is possible through efficient operation management. However, optimizing operating rooms (ORs) schedules is extraordinarily challenging due to the complexities involved in the process. We present new algorithms and managerial guidelines to address the problem of OR …

Analysis Of Surface Integrity In Machining Of Cfrp Under Different Cooling Conditions, Arjun Nagaraj Jan 2019

Analysis Of Surface Integrity In Machining Of Cfrp Under Different Cooling Conditions, Arjun Nagaraj

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) are a class of advanced materials widely used in versatile applications including aerospace and automotive industries due to their exceptional physical and mechanical properties. Owing to the heterogenous nature of the composites, it is often a challenging task to machine them unlike metals. Drilling in particular, the most commonly used process for component assembly is critical especially in the aerospace sector which demands parts of highest quality and surface integrity.

Conventionally, all composites are machined under dry conditions. While there are drawbacks related to dry drilling, for example, poor surface roughness, there is a need …

The Effects Of System Characteristics, Reference Command, And Command-Following Objectives On Human-In-The-Loop Control Behavior, Seyyedalireza Seyyedmousavi

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Humans learn to interact with many complex physical systems. For example, humans learn to fly aircraft, operate drones, and drive automobiles. We present results from human-in-the-loop (HITL) experiments, where human subjects interact with dynamic systems while performing command-following tasks multiple times over a one-week period. We use a new subsystem identification (SSID) algorithm to estimate the control strategies (feedforward, feedforward delay, feedback, and feedback delay) that human subjects use during their trials. We use experimental and SSID results to examine the effects of system characteristics (e.g., system zeros, relative degree, system order, phase lag, time delay), reference command, and command-following …

Circulation Dependence Of The Interaction Between A Wing-Tip Vortex And Turbulence, Farshid Najarzadegan Jan 2019

Circulation Dependence Of The Interaction Between A Wing-Tip Vortex And Turbulence, Farshid Najarzadegan

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Vortices are present in many fluid flows and depending on the context they may be either beneficial or harmful for different systems or processes. Planar particle image velocimetry was used to examine the vortex evolution and its decay under different turbulence intensities and vortex circulation. The vortex decayed faster in the presence of high turbulence intensity. Vortex trajectories were impacted by turbulence intensity and vortex strength. Trajectories with no turbulence intensity had less variation. The vortex wandering amplitude decreased with growth of vortex strength. The vortex decay was confined to the core of the vortex, with the tangential velocity at …

Single-Degree-Of-Freedom Experiments Demonstrating Electromagnetic Formation Flying For Small Satellite Swarms Using Piecewise-Sinusoidal Controls, Ajin Sunny

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

This thesis presents a decentralized electromagnetic formation flying (EMFF) control method using frequency-multiplexed sinusoidal control signals. We demonstrate the EMFF control approach in open-loop and closed-loop control experiments using a single-degree-of-freedom testbed with an electromagnetic actuation system (EAS). The EAS sense the relative position and velocity between satellites and implement a frequency-multiplexed sinusoidal control signal. We use a laser-rangefinder device to capture the relative position and an ARM-based microcontroller to implement the closed-loop control algorithm. We custom-design and build the EAS that implements the formation control in one dimension. The experimental results in this thesis demonstrate the feasibility of the …

This thesis focuses on a surgical maneuver to address the second of these issues, guided by previous steady flow hemodynamic studies that have …

Theoretical And Experimental Study For Tailoring The Electromagnetic Properties Of Conductive Materials, Jeffrey Jennings Jan 2019

Theoretical And Experimental Study For Tailoring The Electromagnetic Properties Of Conductive Materials, Jeffrey Jennings

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Induction in leaded, implanted medical devices exposed to radio frequency (RF) magnetic fields during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produce Joule heating in adjacent tissues causing various issues, including death. Given the importance of MRI as a diagnostic tool and the growth in leaded device-related treatments, identification of a solution ensuring their compatibility is of great interest. Electromagnetic (EM) surface property tailoring in lead materials to change their inductive response by adding functionally-graded, heterogeneous surface layers is a possible solution. However, non-uniform EM properties introduce two challenges: the added complexity of analyses and characterization of the graded region. This dissertation addresses …

Investigation Of Flow Field Structures In A Rectangular Channel With A Pin Fin Array, Patrick Tran Jan 2019

Investigation Of Flow Field Structures In A Rectangular Channel With A Pin Fin Array, Patrick Tran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pin fin arrays are commonly found in heat exchangers, turbine blades, and electronic heat sinks. Fin arrays are extended surfaces that are used as turbulence promoters by inducing horseshoe vortex (HSV) and von Karman vortex (KV) structures. The horseshoe vortex are primarily studied in the leading edge of the blunt body, whereas the KV are formed in the trailing side. This study presents an experimental investigation of flow field structures and pressure loss on staggered pin fin array in the wake region, where KV are dominate. These flow structures increase the local levels turbulence and generate eddies that promote flow …

Safety, Operational, And Design Analyses Of Managed Toll And Connected Vehicles' Lanes, Moatz Saad Jan 2019

Safety, Operational, And Design Analyses Of Managed Toll And Connected Vehicles' Lanes, Moatz Saad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Managed lanes (MLs) have been implemented as a vital strategy for traffic management and traffic safety improvement. The majority of previous studies involving MLs have explored a limited scope of the impact of the MLs segments as a whole, without considering the safety and operational effects of the access design. Also, there are limited studies that investigated the effect of connected vehicles (CVs) on managed lanes. Hence, this study has two main objectives: (1) the first objective is achieved by determining the optimal managed lanes access design, including accessibility level and weaving distance for an at-grade access design. (2) the …

Design And Structural Analysis Of Morphing Wings, Nicholas Fernandez Jan 2019

Design And Structural Analysis Of Morphing Wings, Nicholas Fernandez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many natural flyers and marine swimmers can morph their wings during a number of unsteady maneuverings. With such wing morphing they are able to control the unsteady aerodynamic forces. A number of man-made flyers, such as unmanned aerial vehicles and micro air vehicles, fly in comparable Reynolds number range, but they are yet to acquire similar morphing capabilities as natural flyers or swimmers. Moreover, the knowledge of fluid structural interaction (FSI) of such morphing wings is not well developed. Hence there is a need to investigate the FSI of morphing wings. In this thesis, a morphing wing was designed and …

Gan Power Devices: Discerning Application-Specific Challenges And Limitations In Hemts, Andrew Binder Jan 2019

Gan Power Devices: Discerning Application-Specific Challenges And Limitations In Hemts, Andrew Binder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

GaN power devices are typically used in the 600 V market, for high efficiency, high power-density systems. For these devices, the lateral optimization of gate-to-drain, gate, and gate-to-source lengths, as well as gate field-plate length are critical for optimizing breakdown voltage and performance. This work presents a systematic study of lateral scaling optimization for high voltage devices to minimize figure of merit and maximize breakdown voltage. In addition, this optimization is extended for low voltage devices ( < 100 V), presenting results to optimize both lateral features and vertical features. For low voltage design, simulation work suggests that breakdown is more reliant on punch-through as the primary breakdown mechanism rather than on vertical leakage current as is the case with high-voltage devices. A fabrication process flow has been developed for fabricating Schottky-gate, and MIS-HEMT structures at UCF in the CREOL cleanroom. The fabricated devices were designed to validate the simulation work for low voltage GaN devices. The UCF fabrication process is done with a four layer mask, and consists of mesa isolation, ohmic recess etch, an optional gate insulator layer, ohmic metallization, and gate metallization. Following this work, the fabrication process was transferred to the National Nano Device Laboratories (NDL) in Hsinchu, Taiwan, to take advantage of the more advanced facilities there. Following fabrication, a study has been performed on defect induced performance degradation, leading to the observation of a new phenomenon: trap induced negative differential conductance (NDC). Typically NDC is caused by self-heating, however by implementing a substrate bias test in conjunction with pulsed I-V testing, the NDC seen in our fabricated devices has been confirmed to be from buffer traps that are a result of poor channel carrier confinement during the dc operating condition.

Analysis Of Residual Stress And Damage Mechanisms Of Thermal Barrier Coatings Deposited Via Ps-Pvd And Eb-Pvd, Linda Rossmann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are critical to gas turbine engines, as they protect the components in the hot section from the extreme temperatures of operation. The current industry standard method of applying TBCs for turbine blades in jet engines is electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD), which results in a columnar structure that is valued for its high degree of strain tolerance. An emerging deposition method is plasma-spray physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD), capable of producing a variety of customizable microstructures as well as non-line-of-sight deposition, which allows more complex geometries to be coated, or even multiple parts at once. The pseudo-columnar …

Interactive Perception In Robotics, Masoud Baghbahari Baghdadabad Jan 2019

Interactive Perception In Robotics, Masoud Baghbahari Baghdadabad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interactive perception is a significant and unique characteristic of embodied agents. An agent can discover plenty of knowledge through active interaction with its surrounding environment. Recently, deep learning structures introduced new possibilities to interactive perception in robotics. The advantage of deep learning is in acquiring self-organizing features from gathered data; however, it is computationally impractical to implement in real-time interaction applications. Moreover, it can be difficult to attach a physical interpretation. An alternative suggested framework in such cases is integrated perception-action. In this dissertation, we propose two integrated interactive perception-action algorithms for real-time automated grasping of novel objects using pure …
