Modeling Changes In Public Transit And Private-For-Hire Usage When Implementing A Spatial Tax, Ty Lazarchik
Modeling Changes In Public Transit And Private-For-Hire Usage When Implementing A Spatial Tax, Ty Lazarchik
REU Final Reports
Private-for-Hire (PfH) transportation options, such as Uber, Lyft, and taxicabs, are consistently growing in popularity. With this expanded utilization, cities are struggling to maintain usage of their public transit systems. While PfH transportation has been heavily researched, there is a need to further study how its effects on transit usage may be minimized. In this paper, previous work in traffic modeling and analysis of transit and PfH differences are expanded to develop an agent-based decision model in order to simulate and analyze the effectiveness of implementing a location-based tax in and around the city center of Portland, Oregon. The results …

ENgaging Educators in Renewable enerGY (ENERGY): Lesson Plans & Slideshows (2017-2019)
Wind energy is the fastest growing form of renewable energy, with a multitude of possibilities for expansion. This, as well as other forms of renewable energy, will facilitate understanding of the growing concerns regarding global warming by decreasing our dependence on fossil fuels. Wind energy requires wind speeds of at least six miles per hour; therefore, only certain geographical areas are suitable for the use of this technology. The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether the orientation of an array of wind turbines increases or decreases energy production and efficiency. In this study, various arrays consisting of five …

Electric Solid Propellant Ablation In An Arc Discharge, Matthew S. Glascock, Joshua L. Rovey, Kurt A. Polzin
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electric solid propellants are advanced solid chemical rocket propellants that can be controlled (ignited, throttled, and extinguished) through the application and removal of an electric current. Electric solid propellants are also being considered for pulsed arc ablation electric thrusters, such as the pulsed plasma thruster. The focus of this work is the electrical and ablation characteristics of electric solid propellant within an arc discharge. Arc discharges of 5–20 J per pulse were created within a cylindrical cavity, and results for the electric solid propellant are compared with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which is a traditional propellant in ablative pulsed plasma thrusters. The …

Experimental Investigation Of Mixtures Of 1-Ethyl-3-Methylimidazolium Ethyl Sulfate And Ethylammonium Nitrate With Electrospray Propulsion Applications, Mitchell J. Wainwright, Joshua L. Rovey, Shawn W. Miller, Benjamin D. Prince
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Physical properties, performance metrics, and mass spectra of mixtures of two ionic liquids (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl-sulfate aka [Emim][EtSO4] and ethyl ammonium nitrate aka EAN) are investigated from the standpoint of electrospray propulsive characteristics. Spectra suggest that as the [Emim][EtSO4] mixture fraction increases, the intensity of [Emim][EtSO4] related species in the plume also increases, while the presence of EAN decreases. Spectra also show presence of both EAN proton transfer species and species related to chemical reaction of [EtSO4] and water. Despite the volatility of EAN, it emits stably into vacuum at low flow rates when mixed with 25% [Emim][EtSO4]. Spectra also show …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate ([Emim][EtSO4]) and hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN) is an energetic monopropellant potentially suitable in a multi-mode chemical-electric microtube-electrospray micro propulsion system. In this work, electrospray plume mass spectra are compared between the monopropellant mixture and neat [Emim][EtSO4]. This comparison clearly indicates new and additional species present in the plume due to the addition of HAN. Mass spectra from 20-600 amu/q were obtained over a variety of angles and flow rates from 2 pL/sec to 3 nL/sec in both cation and anion extraction modes. Mass spectrum dependence on flow rate and angular orientation agree qualitatively well with …

Enhanced Quantum Dots Spontaneous Emission With Metamaterial Perfect Absorbers, Wei Wang, Xiaodong Yang, Ting S. Luk, Jie Gao
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Metamaterial perfect absorbers (PAs) made of a hexagonal array of holes on Ag-SiO 2 -Ag thin films have been realized and utilized to enhance the spontaneous emission rate and photoluminescence intensity of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) spin-coated on the absorber top surface. Perfect absorption of incoming light occurs at the wavelength where the impedance is matched to that of the free space. When QDs strongly excite both the electric and magnetic resonances at this perfect absorption wavelength, a significant Purcell effect on the spontaneous emission process and enhanced radiative outcoupling of photoluminescence intensity are expected. For perfect absorbers with near-unity …

Fabrication Of Alcocrfeni High-Entropy Alloy Coating On An Aisi 304 Substrate Via A Cofe₂Ni Intermediate Layer, Wenyuan Cui, Sreekar Karnati, Xinchang Zhang, Elizabeth Burns, Frank W. Liou
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Through laser metal deposition, attempts were made to coat AlCoCrFeNi, a high-entropy alloy (HEA), on an AISI 304 stainless steel substrate to integrate their properties. However, the direct coating of the AlCoCrFeNi HEA on the AISI 304 substrate was found to be unviable due to cracks at the interface between these two materials. The difference in compositional change was suspected to be the source of the cracks. Therefore, a new transition route was performed by coating an intermediate layer of CoFe2Ni on the AISI 304 substrate. Investigations into the microstructure, phase composition, elemental composition and Vickers hardness were …
Design And Implementation Of Periodic Unsteadiness Generator For Turbine Secondary Flow Studies, Nathan James Fletcher
Design And Implementation Of Periodic Unsteadiness Generator For Turbine Secondary Flow Studies, Nathan James Fletcher
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
A primary source of periodic unsteadiness in low-pressure turbines is the wakes shed from upstream blade rows due to the relative motion between adjacent stators and rotors. These periodic perturbations can affect boundary layer transition, secondary flow, and loss generation. In particular, for high-lift front-loaded blades, the secondary flowfield is characterized by strong three-dimensional vortical structures. It is important to understand how these flow features respond to periodic disturbances. A novel approach was taken to generate periodic unsteadiness which captures some of the physics of turbomachinery wakes. Using stationary pneumatic devices, pulsed jets were used to generate disturbances characterized by …

Scalable Clustering For Immune Repertoire Sequence Analysis, Prem Bhusal
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The development of the next-generation sequencing technology has enabled systems immunology researchers to conduct detailed immune repertoire analysis at the molecule level. Large sequence datasets (e.g., millions of sequences) are being collected to comprehensively understand how the immune system of a patient evolves over different stages of disease development. A recent study has shown that the hierarchical clustering (HC) algorithm gives the best results for B-cell clones analysis - an important type of immune repertoire sequencing (IR-Seq) analysis. However, due to the inherent complexity, the classical hierarchical clustering algorithm does not scale well to large sequence datasets. Surprisingly, no algorithms …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research was to design and fabricate a nose-on-chip device and bi-directional airflow system that models flow within the nasal cavity to investigate how airflow induced mechanical stresses impact nasal secretion rates and cytoskeletal remodeling. This research hypothesizes that the airflow induced shear stresses on the nasal mucosa will influence mucus production and the cytoskeleton of the cells. The RPMI 2650 cell line was used to model the nasal mucosa. The system was used to replicate the wall shear stresses (WSS) and wall shear forces (WSF) present in the anterior region of the nose. The WSS and …

Impact Of Combined Heat And Power Generation On An Industrial Site Distribution Network, Thomas Neally
Impact Of Combined Heat And Power Generation On An Industrial Site Distribution Network, Thomas Neally
Masters
Presence of Distributed Generation (DG) in Industrial Site Distribution Network (ISDN) can represent a significant impact on the operational characteristics of the network. Present planning and operation criteria use for ISDN are in general not suitable to cope with the presence of a significant DG capacity. The presence of DG provides considerable benefits from both engineering and economic viewpoints. However, it changes radial configurations of the distribution feeders. Consequently it may cause coordination failure to existing protection system which is originally set based on radial configuration. In addition, high penetration of DG into ISDN may increase feeder loss, and cause …

The crushing strength of the catalyst pellets was also evaluated by a hydraulic press. GSR was carried out at a water to glycerol molar ratio of 9: 1, a total liquid flow rate of 0.04 ml/min, 600 ºC, and 1 atm. Ni/Al2O3 catalyst pellets showed superior catalytic performance …
Bacterial Cellulose/Alginate/Gelatin Composite Films For Wound Dressing, Nadda Chiaoprakobkij
Bacterial Cellulose/Alginate/Gelatin Composite Films For Wound Dressing, Nadda Chiaoprakobkij
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research aimed to develop the blended bacterial cellulose (BC)/ alginate (A)/ gelatin (G) incorporating with curcumin (C) for wound dressing application. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy showed that the interaction among bacterial cellulose/alginate/gelatin curcumin molecules were only physical but not chemical intermolecular level. Water vapor and oxygen permeabilities of the fabricated films were close to commercially avaialbe wound dressings. Curcumin incorporation lowered fluid absorption ability, water vapor and oxygen permeabilities. In vitro culture of human keratinocytes, and human gingival fibroblasts evidenced that the fabricated composite films could promote cell proliferation. Curcumin-loaded films showed anticancer activity against human oral cancer …

Reinforcing Natural Rubber Latex Foam With Nano And Micro Cellulose Fibers Via Dunlop Method, Sirilak Phomrak
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Natural rubber latex foam (NRLF) was reinforced with micro- and nano-cellulose at a loading content of 5-20 parts per hundred of rubber (phr) via the Dunlop process. Cellulose powder from eucalyptus pulp and bacterial cellulose (BC) was used as a microcellulose (MC) and nanocellulose (NC) reinforcing agent, respectively. NRLF, NRLF-MC, and NRLF-NC exhibited interconnected macroporous structures with a high porosity and a low-density. The forms contained pores with sizes in a range of 10-500 µm. As compared to MC, NC had a better dispersion inside the NRLF matrix and showed a higher adhesion to the NRLF matrix, resulting in a …
Prediction Of Catalyst Bed Density And Simulation Of Glycerol Steam Reformer For Hydrogen Production, Vorathorn Charoensuk
Prediction Of Catalyst Bed Density And Simulation Of Glycerol Steam Reformer For Hydrogen Production, Vorathorn Charoensuk
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A simple method was proposed to generate a rigid model and to predict the packing density of catalyst using Blender software. It is a free and open-source 3D creation suite animating catalyst pellets freely falling into a container. The effects of different catalyst shapes (sphere and cylinder) and sizes (2–5 mm) on the packing density of catalyst bed were investigated. It was found that the void fraction decreased with decreasing catalyst pellet diameter for all reactor diameters (18-50 mm). Moreover, the void fraction decreased with increasing reactor size for all catalyst shapes and sizes. The results also showed that the …

Microemulsion Based Soil Remediation Using Mixed Anionic And Extended Nonionic Surfactant, Virin Kittithammavong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The anionic-nonionic mixed system has a synergistic effect on the microemulsion formation by a reduction of interfacial tension. The challenge of the mixed surfactant based on soil remediation is how to find the appropriate condition. This study aims to investigate the phase behaviors of the anionic-nonionic mixed systems and to formulate their hydrophilic-lipophilic deviation (HLD) equations. Then the mixed surfactant solutions are applied to determine the oil removal efficiency. The conventional anionic surfactants (i.e., sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dihexyl sulfosuccinate (SDHS), and sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT)) and the extended nonionic surfactants (i.e., alcohol ethoxylate series (AE(EOn) and alkyl polyglycol …

This work aims to study the effects of alkyl-substituted aromatic amines of polybenzoxazine resins used as binders of non-asbestos friction composite materials. Effects of thermosetting resins (BA-ot, BA-mt, BA-pt, BA-a, and BA-35x) used as a binder of friction composite materials on thermal stability, dynamic mechanical properties, mechanical properties, and tribological performances are investigated. The different chemical networks of polybenzoxazine resulting in differences in the crosslink density and glass transition temperature (Tg) of friction composite materials. The enhancement of crosslink density values of polybenzoxazine composites (F-BA-ot < F-BA-pt < F-BA-a < F-BA-mt < F-BA-35x) resulting to bind other ingredients stronger and more tightly. From the experiment, it can be concluded that the higher crosslink density will result in higher thermal and mechanical properties, lower friction coefficient, and lesser specific wear rate.

Techno-Economic Analysis Of Alternative Processes For Alcohol-Assisted Methanol Synthesis From Carbon Dioxide And Hydrogen, Natthee Khunathorncharoenwong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The novel methanol production from carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2) called alcohol-assisted process is simulated. Although the alcohol-assisted process allows the reduction in operating temperature and pressure, the subsequent product purification is complicated. Comparative studies between the conventional CO2 hydrogenation and the alcohol-assisted processes are carried out (case I-V). The alcohol-assisted processes present the opportunity of increasing the CO2 conversion per-pass and reducing the hydrogen consumption, the barriers in the conventional process. However, the product purifications remain challenging due to the azeotrope of methanol and by-products. Energy consumptions decrease in the feed and reaction sections of the alcohol-assisted processes …
