Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors stand out as a feasible option for treating wastewaters while generating a valuable amount of biogas. It is known that the efficiency of UASB reactors is closely linked to its hydrodynamics. Therefore, understanding the role of each phase (solids, liquid and gas) in the mixing conditions inside the reactor and having validated numerical models for predicting the flow behavior has become fundamental for the design and optimization of UASB reactors. In this context this work aims to develop and validate a three phase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model of an UASB reactor. Eulerian-Eulerian laminar …

Evaluation Of Hydrometric Network Efficacy And User Requirements In The Republic Of Ireland Via Expert Opinion And Statistical Analysis, Paul Hynds, Ahmed Nasr, Jean O'Dwyer

Articles

Decreased funding and shifting governmental priorities have resulted in a contraction of hydrometric measurement in many regions over the past two decades. Moreover, concerns exist with respect to appropriate data usage and (transboundary) exchange, in addition to the compatibility and extent of existing hydrometric datasets. These issues are undoubtedly magnified due to enhanced data demands and increased financial pressures on network managers, thus requiring new approaches to optimising the societal benefits and overall efficacy of hydrometric information for future socio-hydrological resilience. The current study employed a quantitative cross-sectional expert elicitation of 203 respondents to collate, analyse and assess hydrometric network …

"Mentoring Is Ethical, Right?": Women Graduate Students And Faculty In Science And Engineering Speak Out, Laura Gelles, Idalis Villanueva, Marialuisa Di Stefano

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

The relationship between graduate students and their research advisors within academia is pivotal to the development and success of the research enterprise. Graduate students rely on their faculty advisor to be a source of information, a departmental negotiator, and a role model to guide their professional and ethical behavior. However, if an advisor does not fully recognize a student’s best interest or they are unaware of how to be an “ethical mentor”, they may overlook the unique social capital of the graduate student (e.g., background, culture) and jeopardize the research relationship. This work aims to explore how women graduate students …

Background And Design Of A Qualitative Study On Globally Responsible Decision-Making In Civil Engineering, Shannon Chance, Ines Direito, Rob Lawlor, Katie Cresswell-Maynard, Jon Pritchard, Nick Tyler, John Mitchell

Conference papers

Organizations that regulate civil engineering have been pressing for integration of 'global responsibility' into higher education curricula since around 2006, with a goal of achieving environmental sustainability and social justice. In an effort led by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE, 2007, 2009), a global vision for civil engineering was identified. Within the UK, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has been leading the way alongside non-governmental organizations (Bourn & Neal, 2008). Via the in-progress study reported here, a UK-based research team is now studying the effects of ACSE and ICE initiatives. The team seeks to benchmark how global …

A Phenomenographic Study To Investigate What We Mean By The Term “Professional Skills” – Preliminary Findings, Una Beagon, B. Bowe

Conference papers

Recent calls for reform of engineering education have highlighted the importance of treating the engineering education system holistically; not only looking at developing curriculum components nor proposing new teaching pedagogies to enhance graduate skills. One aspect of this holistic view, which has not been given due cognisance is the impact that academic conceptions can have on the experience of the student in the educational system. The authors propose that academics teaching on engineering programmes do not share a common understanding of what we mean by “professional skills”, nor assume the same teaching and learning processes which develop these skills. It …

The Scaling Limit Of The Membrane Model, Alessandra Cipriani, Biltu Dan, Rajat Subhra Hazra Jan 2019

The Scaling Limit Of The Membrane Model, Alessandra Cipriani, Biltu Dan, Rajat Subhra Hazra

Journal Articles

On the integer lattice, we consider the discrete membrane model, a random interface in which the field has Laplacian interaction. We prove that, under appropriate rescaling, the discrete membrane model converges to the continuum membrane model in d ≥ 2. Namely, it is shown that the scaling limit in d = 2, 3 is a Holder continuous random field, while in d ≥ 4 the membrane model converges to a random distribution. As a by-product of the proof in d = 2, 3, we obtain the scaling limit of the maximum. This work complements the analogous results of Caravenna and …

Impact In Practice, Maria Garman Jan 2019

Impact In Practice, Maria Garman

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin splits) is an overuse injury caused by repetitive impact. If ignored it can lead to stress reactions and then stress fractures in the shins. This nagging injury is something that plagues many track athletes especially as they start to wear their competition shoes more frequently at practice to work on technical aspects of their events.

This paper investigates the relationship between ground reaction forces experienced by the athletes in each stride and what shoes they are wearing on their feet. Due to the fact that repetitive impact is a cause for shin splints, the conclusion …

Coupling Simulation Model Between Mine Ventilation Network And Gob Flow Field, F.I. Wu, Y. Luo, X-T Chang Jan 2019

Coupling Simulation Model Between Mine Ventilation Network And Gob Flow Field, F.I. Wu, Y. Luo, X-T Chang

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Many numerical simulation studies of coal spontaneous combustion have focused on the leakage flow field in the mine gob. However, most of these studies isolate the gob from the mine ventilation system, failing to consider the effects of air leakage on gob boundary conditions. A novel model coupling the mine ventilation network (MVN) and gob flow field (GFF) has been developed to simulate the overall mine ventilation system. The concept of network boundary node was proposed and the corresponding air flow rate balance equations were developed based on the node pressure method for MVN calculation and the finite element method …

Visual Entailment Task For Visually-Grounded Language Learning, Ning Xie, Farley Lai, Derek Doran, Asim Kadav Jan 2019

Visual Entailment Task For Visually-Grounded Language Learning, Ning Xie, Farley Lai, Derek Doran, Asim Kadav

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We introduce a new inference task - Visual Entailment (VE) - which differs from traditional Textual Entailment (TE) tasks whereby a premise is defined by an image, rather than a natural language sentence as in TE tasks. A novel dataset SNLI-VE (publicly available at https://github.com/necla-ml/SNLI-VE) is proposed for VE tasks based on the Stanford Natural Language Inference corpus and Flickr30k. We introduce a differentiable architecture called the Explainable Visual Entailment model (EVE) to tackle the VE problem. EVE and several other state-of-the-art visual question answering (VQA) based models are evaluated on the SNLI-VE dataset, facilitating grounded language understanding and providing …

Cmos Receiver Design For 802.11ac Standard Using Offline Calibrated Active Inductor Based Band Pass Filter In 90 Nm Technology, Shuo Li

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Wireless local area network is widely used in industry and people daily life. More and more mobile devices rely on this technology to perform data communication with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency band. As the development of CMOS technology is able to keep shrinking chip size and increasing circuit integration density, traditional on-chip passive inductor inefficient area consumption issue is becoming critical to receiver front end system design. In this dissertation, an active inductor-based band pass filter is studied and implemented with 90 nm technology. This active inductor design provides very small area consumption and larger quality factor compared …

A Structured Methodology For Tailoring And Deploying Lean Manufacturing Systems, Kenneth John Gembel Ii Jan 2019

A Structured Methodology For Tailoring And Deploying Lean Manufacturing Systems, Kenneth John Gembel Ii

Wayne State University Dissertations

The seminal works of Peter Drucker and James Womack in the 1990’s outlined the lean manufacturing practices of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) to become a world leader in manufacturing. These philosophies have since become the springboard for a significant paradigm shift in approaching manufacturing systems and how to leverage them to optimize operational practices and gain competitive advantage. While there is no shortage of literature touting the benefits of Lean Manufacturing Systems (LMS), there has been significant difficulty in effectively deploying them to obtain and sustain the performance that TMC has achieved.

This body of work provides a novel methodology …

Bipedal Model And Hybrid Zero Dynamics Of Human Walking With Foot Slip, Mitja Trkov, Kuo Chen, Jingang Yi Jan 2019

Bipedal Model And Hybrid Zero Dynamics Of Human Walking With Foot Slip, Mitja Trkov, Kuo Chen, Jingang Yi

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Foot slip is one of the major causes of falls in human locomotion. Analytical bipedal models provide an insight into the complex slip dynamics and reactive control strategies for slip-induced fall prevention. Most of the existing bipedal dynamics models are built on no foot slip assumption and cannot be used directly for such analysis. We relax the no-slip assumption and present a new bipedal model to capture and predict human walking locomotion under slip. We first validate the proposed slip walking dynamic model by tuning and optimizing the model parameters to match the experimental results. The results demonstrate that the …

Inception Modules Enhance Brain Tumor Segmentation., Daniel E Cahall, Ghulam Rasool, Nidhal Carla Bouaynaya, Hassan M Fathallah-Shaykh Jan 2019

Inception Modules Enhance Brain Tumor Segmentation., Daniel E Cahall, Ghulam Rasool, Nidhal Carla Bouaynaya, Hassan M Fathallah-Shaykh

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Magnetic resonance images of brain tumors are routinely used in neuro-oncology clinics for diagnosis, treatment planning, and post-treatment tumor surveillance. Currently, physicians spend considerable time manually delineating different structures of the brain. Spatial and structural variations, as well as intensity inhomogeneity across images, make the problem of computer-assisted segmentation very challenging. We propose a new image segmentation framework for tumor delineation that benefits from two state-of-the-art machine learning architectures in computer vision, i.e., Inception modules and U-Net image segmentation architecture. Furthermore, our framework includes two learning regimes, i.e., learning to segment intra-tumoral structures (necrotic and non-enhancing tumor core, peritumoral edema, …

Modeling And Control Of The Ugv Argo J5 With A Custom-Built Landing Platform, Mohammed Aldaoseri Alghanim Jan 2019

Modeling And Control Of The Ugv Argo J5 With A Custom-Built Landing Platform, Mohammed Aldaoseri Alghanim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims to develop a detailed dynamic model and implement several navigation controllers for path tracking and dynamic self-leveling of the Argo J5 Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) with a custom-built landing platform. The overall model is derived by combining the Argo J5 driveline system with the wheelsterrain interaction (using terramechanics theory and mobile robot kinetics), while the landing platform model follows the Euler-Lagrange formulation. Different controllers are, then, derived, implemented to demonstrate: i.) self-leveling accuracy of the landing platform, ii.) trajectory tracking capabilities of the Argo J5 when moving in uneven terrains. The novelty of the Argo J5 model …

Coupling Numerical Analysis Of Vibration And Thermal Buckling Of An Automotive Brake Disc, Joseph-Shaahu Shaahu Jan 2019

Coupling Numerical Analysis Of Vibration And Thermal Buckling Of An Automotive Brake Disc, Joseph-Shaahu Shaahu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An engaged brake system generates high temperature gradients in the brake rotor and brake pads. This high temperature gradient in turn induces thermal buckling. During high speed rotation, vibration is likely to occur in the system. In terms of a brake disc vibration will occur when there is a misalignment of the brake disc or thermoelastic instability (hot spot) forms on the brake rotor. Coupled and uncoupled problems of thermal buckling and vibration of a brake disc are analyzed and presented using finite element analysis in this paper. Thermal buckling depends on the direction of the high temperature gradient. Having …

From Statistical Correlations To Stochasticity And Size Effects In Sub-Micron Crystal Plasticity, Hengxu Song, Stefanos Papanikolaou Jan 2019

From Statistical Correlations To Stochasticity And Size Effects In Sub-Micron Crystal Plasticity, Hengxu Song, Stefanos Papanikolaou

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Metals in small volumes display a strong dependence on initial conditions, which translates into size effects and stochastic mechanical responses. In the context of crystal plasticity, this amounts to the role of pre-existing dislocation configurations that may emerge due to prior processing. Here, we study a minimal but realistic model of uniaxial compression of sub-micron finite volumes. We show how the statistical correlations of pre-existing dislocation configurations may influence the mechanical response in multi-slip crystal plasticity, in connection to the finite volume size and the initial dislocation density. In addition, spatial dislocation correlations display evidence that plasticity is strongly influenced …

Content-Based Music Recommendation Using Deep Learning, Ryan Whitell Jan 2019

Content-Based Music Recommendation Using Deep Learning, Ryan Whitell

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Music streaming services use recommendation systems to improve the customer experience by generating favorable playlists and by fostering the discovery of new music. State of the art recommendation systems use both collaborative filtering and content-based recommendation methods. Collaborative filtering suffers from the cold start problem; it can only make recommendations for music for which it has enough user data, so content-based methods are preferred. Most current content-based recommendation systems use convolutional neural networks on the spectrograms of track audio. The architectures are commonly borrowed directly from the field of computer vision. It is shown in this study that musically-motivated convolutional …
