A Smart Knee Implant Using Triboelectric Energy Harvesters, Shahrzad Towfighian, Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim, Manav Jain, Emre Salman, Ryan Willing

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

Although the number of total knee replacement (TKR) surgeries is growing rapidly, functionality and pain-reduction outcomes remain unsatisfactory for many patients. Continual monitoring of knee loads after surgery offers the potential to improve surgical procedures and implant designs. The goal of this study is to characterize a triboelectric energy harvester under body loads and to design compatible frontend electronics to digitize the load data. The harvester prototype would be placed between the tibial component and polyethylene bearing of a TKR implant. The harvester generates power from the compressive load. To examine the harvester output and the feasibility of powering a …

Influence Propagation For Social Graph-Based Recommendations, Avni Gulati, Magdalini Eirinaki

Faculty Publications

Social networking is an inevitable behavior of humans living in a society. In recent years, and with the rise of online social networks, personalized recommendations that leverage the social aspect have become a very intriguing domain for researchers. In this work, we explore how influence propagation and the decay in the cascading effect of influence from influential users can be leveraged to generate social graph-based recommendations. Understanding how influence propagates within a social network is itself a challenging problem. Few researchers have considered influence propagation and even fewer have considered decay in the cascading effect of influence in a social …

Webinar: Modeling Freeway Traffic In A Mixed Environment: Connected And Human-Driven Vehicles, Xianfeng Terry Yang

TREC Webinar Series

Although connected vehicles (CVs) will soon go beyond testbeds, CVs and human-driven vehicles (HVs) will co-exist over a long period. Hence, it is critical to consider the interactions between these two types of vehicles in traffic flow modeling. In this study, we aim to develop a macroscopic model to understand how CVs would impact HVs in the traffic stream. Grounded on the second-order traffic flow model, we study the relationships among flow, density, and speed by two sets of formulations for the groups of CVs and HVs, respectively. A set of friction factors, which indicate CVs' impact to HVs, are …

Effects Of Enso On Temperature, Precipitation, And Potential Evapotranspiration Of North India’S Monsoon: An Analysis Of Trend And Entropy, Kazi Tamaddun, Ajay Kalra, Miguel Bernandez, Sajjad Ahmad

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

The influence of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the north Indian temperature, precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration (PET) change patterns were evaluated during the monsoon season across the last century. Trends and shifts in 146 districts were assessed using nonparametric statistical tests. To quantify their temporal variation, the concept of apportionment entropy was applied to both the annual and seasonal scales. Results suggest that the El Niño years played a greater role in causing hydro-climatological changes compared to the La Niña or neutral years. El Niño was more influential in causing shifts compared to trends. For certain districts, a phase …

Integrating Wildfires Propagation Prediction Into Early Warning Of Electrical Transmission Line Outages, Songyi Dian, Peng Cheng, Qiang Ye, Jirong Wu, Ruisen Luo, Chen Wang, Dafeng Hui, Ning Zhou, Dong Zou, Qin Yu, Xiaofeng Gong

Biology Faculty Research

Wildfires could pose a significant danger to electrical transmission lines and cause considerable losses to the power grids and residents nearby. Previous studies of preventing wildfire damages to electrical transmission lines mostly analyze wildfire and power system security independently due to their differences in disciplines and cannot satisfy the requirement of the power grid for active and timely responses. In this paper, we have designed an integrated wildfire early warning system framework for power grids, taking prediction of wildfires and early warning of line outage probability together. First, the proposed model simulates the spatiotemporal process of wildfires via a geography …

The topography of electro spun fiber scaffolds modifies astrocytes toward in vivo-like morphologies and behaviors. However, little is known about how electro spun fiber diameter influences astrocyte behavior. In this work, aligned fibers with two distinct nanoscale fiber diameters (808 and 386 nm) were prepared, and the astrocyte response was measured over time. Astrocytes on the large diameter fibers showed significantly increased elongation as early as 2 h after seeding and remained significantly more elongated for up to 4 days compared to those on small diameter fibers. Astrocytes extending along larger diameter fibers were better equipped to support long neurite …

Mechanical Vibration For The Control Of Membrane Fouling In Direct Contact Membrane Distillation, Frank Y.C. Huang, Carolyn Medin, Allie Arning

Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering Publications

One of the biggest challenges for direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) in treating wastewater from flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is the rapid deterioration of membrane performance resulting from precipitate fouling. Chemical pretreatment, such as lime-soda ash softening, has been used to mitigate the issue, however, with significant operating costs. In this study, mechanical vibration of 42.5 Hz was applied to lab-scale DCMD systems to determine its effectiveness of fouling control for simulated FGD water. Liquid entry pressure and mass transfer limit of the fabricated hollow fiber membranes were determined and used as the operational constraints in the fouling experiments so …

Random Subspace Projection For Predicting Biogeographical Ancestry, Tanjin Toma, Tayo Olufemi-Ajayi, Jeremy Dawson, Donald Adjeroh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Human biogeographical ancestry estimation using genomic information is an important problem with applications in population stratification, admixture mapping, forensic ancestry inference, and in healthcare. Various studies have proposed panels of ancestry informative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for distinguishing between widely separated continental populations. There has been limited investigation on identifying SNP panels for sub-continental ancestry prediction, especially given the difficult challenge of identifying SNP markers to distinguish closely associated sub-populations, for instance, within a continent. In this study, we propose an ancestry informative SNP selection algorithm exploiting the concept of random subspace projection using supervised learning. The proposed approach identifies …

Effect Of Salt Valency And Concentration On Shear And Extensional Rheology Of Aqueous Polyelectrolyte Solutions For Enhanced Oil Recovery, Anna V. Walter, Leidy N. Jimenez, Jelena Dinic, Vivek Sharma, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The injection of polymer solutions into an oil basin can lead to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) by increasing the microscopic sweep of the reservoir, improving the water-oil motility ratio, and thus leading to greater yield from oil fields. In this contribution, we characterize both shear and extensional rheological response of aqueous solutions of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM), the most commonly used polymer for EOR, for velocity gradients in both the flow direction (extensional) and perpendicular to flow (shear) arise in EOR applications. As HPAM is a charged polymer, to better emulate the environment in oil basins, the rheological response was …

Illumination Pattern Design With Deep Learning For Single-Shot Fourier Ptychographic Microscopy, Yi Fei Cheng , '21, Megan Strachan , '21, Zachary Weiss , '20, Moniher Deb , '19, Dawn M. Carone, Vidya Ganapati

Biology Faculty Works

Fourier ptychographic microscopy allows for the collection of images with a high space-bandwidth product at the cost of temporal resolution. In Fourier ptychographic microscopy, the light source of a conventional widefield microscope is replaced with a light-emitting diode (LED) matrix, and multiple images are collected with different LED illumination patterns. From these images, a higher-resolution image can be computationally reconstructed without sacrificing field-of-view. We use deep learning to achieve single-shot imaging without sacrificing the space-bandwidth product, reducing the acquisition time in Fourier ptychographic microscopy by a factor of 69. In our deep learning approach, a training dataset of high-resolution images …
