Novel Test Fixture For Characterizing Mems Switch Microcontact Reliability And Performance, Protap Mahanta, Farhana Anwar, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) switches, the microcontact is crucial in determining reliability and performance. In the past, actual MEMS devices and atomic force microscopes (AFM)/scanning probe microscopes (SPM)/nanoindentation-based test fixtures have been used to collect relevant microcontact data. In this work, we designed a unique microcontact support structure for improved post-mortem analysis. The effects of contact closure timing on various switching conditions (e.g., cold-switching and hot-switching) was investigated with respect to the test signal. Mechanical contact closing time was found to be approximately 1 us for the contact force ranging from 10–900 μN. On the other hand, for the 1 …

An Experimental Study Of Fractional Wettability Effects On Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gagd), Abdullah Abdulrahman A. Al-Tameemi
An Experimental Study Of Fractional Wettability Effects On Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (Gagd), Abdullah Abdulrahman A. Al-Tameemi
LSU Master's Theses
Utilizing the power of nature to solve engineering problems has been a time-honored tradition, for example, using the sunlight as a heat and light source. From this principle, the visionary idea of Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) came. The GAGD process utilizes the natural segregation phenomenon of fluids with different densities in order to produce oil efficiently and economically. Waterflooding processes typically do not recover more than 40% of the original oil in place (OOIP), leaving a vast amount of oil behind. A practical and well-planned enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method is needed. However, to plan a successful project, the …

Low-Density Static Granular Media Filter Bed Turbidity Removal Model, Matthew Louque
LSU Master's Theses
The scattering of light within a fluid, referred to as its turbidity, was investigated against the presence of suspended solids. A linear regression analysis was conduced against turbidity and the total count, combined surface area, and combined volume of the suspended particles for various surface water sources (lakes, rivers, indoor aquaculture systems). It was found that the total combined surface area of suspended particles had the best linear correlation to turbidity, with an adjusted R2 of 81.79%. This correlation was integrated with a current theoretical model for predicting solids removal across a granular bed to yield an Integrated Turbidity …

Long-Term Durability Of Frp Bond In The Midwest United States For Externally-Strengthened Bridge Components, Sasan Siavashi, Christopher D. Eamon, Abdel A. Makkawy, Hwai-Chung Wu
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications
In this study, the bond strength of a typical FRP system subjected to long-term natural weathering in the Midwest United States is experimentally investigated, and the rate of degradation is estimated. To do this, the bond strength of an FRP system exposed to over fifteen years of weathering is determined with pull-off testing, and a relationship between strength reduction and exposure time is developed using regression analysis. For unweathered specimens, it was found that the attachment strength of the FRP system was governed by the concrete substrate, while for weathered specimens, the FRP system could detach by either a failure …

A Triaxial Applicator For The Measurement Of The Electromagnetic Properties Of Materials, Saranraj Karuppuswami, Edward Rothwell, Premjeet Chahal, Michael J. Havrilla
Faculty Publications
The design, analysis, and fabrication of a prototype triaxial applicator is described. The applicator provides both reflected and transmitted signals that can be used to characterize the electromagnetic properties of materials in situ. A method for calibrating the probe is outlined and validated using simulated data. Fabrication of the probe is discussed, and measured data for typical absorbing materials and for the probe situated in air are presented. The simulations and measurements suggest that the probe should be useful for measuring the properties of common radar absorbing materials under usual in situ conditions.

Two-Stage Bagging Pruning For Reducing The Ensemble Size And Improving The Classification Performance, Hua Zhang, Yujie Song, Bo Jiang, Bi Chen, Guogen Shan
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
Ensemble methods, such as the traditional bagging algorithm, can usually improve the performance of a single classifier. However, they usually require large storage space as well as relatively time-consuming predictions. Many approaches were developed to reduce the ensemble size and improve the classification performance by pruning the traditional bagging algorithms. In this article, we proposed a two-stage strategy to prune the traditional bagging algorithm by combining two simple approaches: accuracy-based pruning (AP) and distance-based pruning (DP). These two methods, as well as their two combinations, “AP+DP” and “DP+AP” as the two-stage pruning strategy, were all examined. Comparing with the single …

An Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flow Accelerated Flibe Corrosion, David B. Weitzel
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
Renewed interest in molten salt reactor technology has brought to light the need for a better understanding of FLiBe corrosion. To this end a flowing FLiBe corrosion test loop was designed to test the flow effects of FLiBe corrosion. The loop consists of a pump, melt tank, and stainless-steel tubing assembly that heats the molten salt to high temperatures and circulates it over test specimens. The experiment has been constructed and has completed initial shakedown testing.
To support the flowing FLiBe experiment, a numerical corrosion model that couples FLiBe electrochemistry, solid metal diffusion, and mass transport was implemented. The model …
Low Temperature Multi Effects Desalination-Mechanical Vapor Compression Powered By Supercritical Organic Rankine Cycle, Eydhah Almatrafi
Low Temperature Multi Effects Desalination-Mechanical Vapor Compression Powered By Supercritical Organic Rankine Cycle, Eydhah Almatrafi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Utilizing low grade heat sources such as geothermal, solar or waste heat has received a high attention in recent years. A lot of research has discussed using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) as subcritical or supercritical in power generation. However, very few studies extend their research in utilizing ORC in other applications such as desalination. For reverse osmosis (RO) desalination, which is considered a membrane technology, the use of supercritical-ORC in low grade heat sources is more favorable than subcritical-ORC. Thus, studies of utilizing either subcritical-ORC or supercritical-ORC for thermal desalination that use power and heat from Rankine cycle are rare …

Natural killer (NK) cells are a type of lymphocyte in the blood that are responsible for innate and adaptive immune response, and they mature in the liver and bone marrow. Being a key role in host defense system with direct and indirect killing of virus-infected cells or cancer cells, NK cell has been considered an attractive candidate for cancer therapy. Peripheral blood shows the low frequency of NK cells, so ex vivo expansion method is important to obtain sufficient NK cells for therapeutic use. Currently, we successfully developed bioreactor process for NK cell expansion on lab-scale. Stirred-tank bioreactor could be …

Slope Stability Evaluation Based On Set Pair Cloud Model, Yao Jianye, Zhang Shan, Hao Guoqiang
Coal Geology & Exploration
When the set pair analysis is applied to evaluate slope stability, the connection degree is usually decided by linear function, which can't reflect the actual conditions of the engineering project objectively and comprehensively and neglect the system randomness. The set pair analysis theory is improved by application of cloud theory which is superior in dealing with the connection degree and set pair analysis-cloud model of slope stability evaluation is established. In this model, the weight matrix is obtained by using the cloud theory to improve the AHP, and the evaluation matrix is obtained by combining with the connection degree evaluation …

Microseismic Positioning Method Based On Differential Evolution Algorithm, Wang Yunhong, Wang Baoli, Duan Jianhua
Coal Geology & Exploration
Aiming at the problem that the location accuracy of conventional time-based microseismic location method depends on the accuracy of travel time, a differential evolution microseismic location method is proposed to improve the locating target function. Based on the traditional micro-seismic P-wave travel-time location method, the error weighting coefficient was added to the localization objective function, which reduced the impact of the first-time picking accuracy on the microseismic location by reducing the effect of the microseismic signal path with low initial pick-up accuracy on the locating error. The differential evolution algorithm, through population initialization, mutation, crossover, and selection operations, solves the …
