Decision Making Based On Data Analyses Using Data Warehouses, Valdrin Haxhiu Feb 2019

Decision Making Based On Data Analyses Using Data Warehouses, Valdrin Haxhiu

International Journal of Business and Technology

Data warehouses are a collection of several databases, whose goal is to help different companies and corporations make important decisions about their activities. These decisions are taken from the analyses that are made to the data within the data warehouse. These data are taken from data that companies and corporations collect on daily basis from their branches that may be located in different cities, regions, states and continents. Data that are entered to data warehouses are historical data and they represent that part of data that is important for making decisions. These data go under a transformation process in order …

Characteristics And Temporal Behavior Of Internet Backbone Traffic, Artan Salihu, Muharrem Shefkiu, Arianit Maraj Feb 2019

Characteristics And Temporal Behavior Of Internet Backbone Traffic, Artan Salihu, Muharrem Shefkiu, Arianit Maraj

International Journal of Business and Technology

With the rapid increase demand for data usage, Internet has become complex and harder to analyze. Characterizing the Internet traffic might reveal information that are important for Network Operators to formulate policy decisions, develop techniques to detect network anomalies, help better provision network resources (capacity, buffers) and use workload characteristics for simulations (typical packet sizes, flow durations, common protocols).

In this paper, using passive monitoring and measurements, we show collected data traffic at Internet backbone routers. First, we reveal main observations on patterns and characteristics of this dataset including packet sizes, traffic volume for inter and intra domain and protocol …

Permission-Based Privacy Analysis For Android Applications, Erza Gashi, Zhilbert Tafa Feb 2019

Permission-Based Privacy Analysis For Android Applications, Erza Gashi, Zhilbert Tafa

International Journal of Business and Technology

While Information and Communication Technology (ICT) trends are moving towards the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile applications are becoming more and more popular. Mostly due to their pervasiveness and the level of interaction with the users, along with the great number of advantages, the mobile applications bring up a great number of privacy related issues as well. These platforms can gather our very sensitive private data by only granting them a list of permissions during the installation process. Additionally, most of the users can find it difficult, or even useless, to analyze system permissions. Thus, their guess of app’s safety …

A Need For An Integrative Security Model For Semantic Stream Reasoning Systems, Admirim Aliti, Edmond Jajaga, Kozeta Sevrani Feb 2019

A Need For An Integrative Security Model For Semantic Stream Reasoning Systems, Admirim Aliti, Edmond Jajaga, Kozeta Sevrani

International Journal of Business and Technology

State-of-the-art security frameworks have been extensively addressing security issues for web resources, agents and services in the Semantic Web. The provision of Stream Reasoning as a new area spanning Semantic Web and Data Stream Management Systems has eventually opened up new challenges. Namely, their decentralized nature, the metadata descriptions, the number of users, agents, and services, make securing Stream Reasoning systems difficult to handle. Thus, there is an inherent need of developing new security models which will handle security and automate security mechanisms to a more autonomous system that supports complex and dynamic relationships between data, clients and service providers. …

Why Modeling Complex Dynamic Systems Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps?, Peter P. Groumpos Feb 2019

Why Modeling Complex Dynamic Systems Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps?, Peter P. Groumpos

International Journal of Business and Technology

The difficult problem of modeling Complex Dynamic Systems (CDS) is carefully reviewed. Main characteristics of CDS are considered and analyzed. Today’s mathematical models and approaches cannot provide satisfactory answers to the challenging problems of the society. The key problem of complex dynamic systems and control theory consists in the development of methods of qualitative analysis of the dynamics and behavior of such systems and in the construction of efficient control algorithms for their efficient operation. The purpose of control to bring the system to a point of its phase space which corresponds to maximal or minimal value of the chosen …

Prediction Of Punching Shear Capacity Of Two-Ways Frp Reinforced Concrete Slabs, Ilker Fatih Kara, Besian Sinani Feb 2019

Prediction Of Punching Shear Capacity Of Two-Ways Frp Reinforced Concrete Slabs, Ilker Fatih Kara, Besian Sinani

International Journal of Business and Technology

An innovative solution to the corrosion problem is the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) as an alternative reinforcing material in concrete structures. In addition to the non corrodible nature of FRP materials, they also have a high strength-to-weight ratio that makes them attractive as reinforcement for concrete structures. Extensive research programs have been carried out to investigate the flexural behavior of concrete members reinforced with FRP reinforcement. On the other hand, the shear behavior of concrete members, especially punching shear of two-way slabs, reinforced with FRP bars has not yet been fully explored. The existing provisions for punching of slabs …

Assessment Of Reinforced Concrete Half Joint According To En-1992-1-1, Xhemshir Mulliqi Feb 2019

Assessment Of Reinforced Concrete Half Joint According To En-1992-1-1, Xhemshir Mulliqi

International Journal of Business and Technology

A half-joint is a particular type of RC structure .When using precast beams in reinforced concrete frame structures, dapped beams ends are often required in the bearing area to keep the floor structure as thin as possible. The arrangement and detailing of the reinforcement is an important factor in the performance of a half-joint. For pre-tensioned members, the prestressing force and tendons should be ignored, but for post-tensioned members the prestressing force should be considered as an external force acting on the half-joint. This paper aims to calculate dapped beam ends according to the EN 1992-1-1.

Electrochromic Semiconductors As Colorimetric Sers Substrates With High Reproducibility And Renewability, Shan Cong, Zhen Wang, Wenbin Gong, Zhigang Chen, Weibang Lu, John R. Lombardi, Zhigang Zhao

Publications and Research

Electrochromic technology has been actively researched for displays, adjustable mirrors, smart windows, and other cutting-edge applications. However, it has never been proposed to overcome the critical problems in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Herein, we demonstrate a generic electrochromic strategy for ensuring the reproducibility and renewability of SERS substrates, which are both scientifically and technically important due to the great need for quantitative analysis, standardized production and low cost in SERS. This color-changing strategy is based on a unique quantitative relationship between the SERS signal amplification and the coloration degree within a certain range, in which the SERS …

Obstacles To Translating The Promise Of Nanoparticles Into Viable Amyloid Disease Therapeutics, N. P. Van Der Munnik, M. A. Moss, M. J. Uline

Faculty Publications

Nanoparticles (NPs) constitute a powerful therapeutic platform with exciting prospects as potential inhibitors of amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation, a process associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Researchers have synthesized and tested a large collection of NPs with disparate sizes, shapes, electrostatic properties and surface ligands that evoke a variety of responses on Aβ aggregation. In spite of a decade of research on the NP-Aβ system and many promising experimental results, NPs have failed to progress to any level of clinical trials for AD. A theoretical framework with which to approach this physical system is presented featuring two simple metrics, (1) the extent …

Improving Human-Machine Collaboration Through Transparency-Based Feedback – Part I: Human Trust And Workload Model, Kumar Akash, Katelyn Polson, Neera Jain

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we establish a partially observable Markov decision process(POMDP) model framework that captures dynamic changes in human trust and workload for contexts that involve interactions between humans and intelligent decision-aid systems. We use a reconnaissance mission study to elicit a dynamic change in human trust and workload with respect to the system’s reliability and user interface transparency as well as the presence or absence of danger. We use human subject data to estimate transition and observation probabilities of the POMDP model and analyze the trust-workload behavior of humans. Our results indicate that higher transparency is more likely to …

Improving Human-Machine Collaboration Through Transparency-Based Feedback – Part Ii: Control Design And Synthesis, Kumar Akash, Tahira Reid, Neera Jain

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

To attain improved human-machine collaboration, it is necessary for autonomous systems to infer human trust and workload and respond accordingly. In turn, autonomous systems require models that capture both human trust and workload dynamics. In a companion paper, we developed a trust-workload partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) model framework that captured changes in human trust and workload for contexts that involve interaction between a human and an intelligent decision-aid system. In this paper, we defne intuitive reward functions and show that these can be readily transformed for integration with the proposed POMDP model. We synthesize a near-optimal control policy …

Fc2: Cloud-Based Cluster Provisioning For Distributed Machine Learning, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta Feb 2019

Fc2: Cloud-Based Cluster Provisioning For Distributed Machine Learning, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Training large, complex machine learning models such as deep neural networks with big data requires powerful computing clusters, which are costly to acquire, use and maintain. As a result, many machine learning researchers turn to cloud computing services for on-demand and elastic resource provisioning capabilities. Two issues have arisen from this trend: (1) if not configured properly, training models on cloud-based clusters could incur significant cost and time, and (2) many researchers in machine learning tend to focus more on model and algorithm development, so they may not have the time or skills to deal with system setup, resource selection …

Diagnostic Performance Of Receptor-Specific Surgical Specimen Staining Correlates With Receptor Expression Level, Jasmin M. Schaefer, Connor W. Barth, Scott C. Davis, Summer L. Gibbs Feb 2019

Diagnostic Performance Of Receptor-Specific Surgical Specimen Staining Correlates With Receptor Expression Level, Jasmin M. Schaefer, Connor W. Barth, Scott C. Davis, Summer L. Gibbs

Dartmouth Scholarship

Intraoperative margin assessment is imperative to cancer cure but is a continued challenge to successful surgery. Breast conserving surgery is a relevant example, where a cosmetically improved outcome is gained over mastectomy, but re-excision is required in >25  %   of cases due to positive or closely involved margins. Clinical translation of margin assessment modalities that must directly contact the patient or required administered contrast agents are time consuming and costly to move from bench to bedside. Tumor resections provide a unique surgical opportunity to deploy margin assessment technologies including contrast agents on the resected tissues, substantially shortening the path to …

Engineering A Bacterial Flagella Forest For Sensing And Actuation – A Progress Report, Xihe Liu, Shulin Ye, Isaac Oti, Lauren Metzinger

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

Flagella can be used to make magnetically-controlled microfluidic and nanoscale devices for biomedical applications in both vitro and vivo environments. They are capable of operating with high precision on the cellular and subcellular level. So far, scientists and engineers have successfully used monolithic inorganic materials or photoactive polymers [1] to mimic the helical bacterial flagella whose rotary-propulsion mechanism effectively overcomes the dominant viscous forces that prevail in a low Reynolds-number environment. Here, we focus on bacterial flagella and their rotary motion. The bacterial flagellum is an ideal biomaterial for constructing self-propelling nanoswimmers because it can reversibly change its geometry in …

On Accounting For Equipment-Control Interactions In Economic Model Predictive Control Via Process State Constraints, Helen Durand Feb 2019

On Accounting For Equipment-Control Interactions In Economic Model Predictive Control Via Process State Constraints, Helen Durand

Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications

Traditionally, chemical processes have been operated at steady-state; however, recent work on economic model predictive control (EMPC) has indicated that some processes may be operated in a more economically-optimal fashion under a time-varying operating policy. It is unclear how time-varying operating policies may impact process equipment, which must be investigated for safety and profit reasons. It has traditionally been considered that constraints on process states can be added to EMPC design to prevent the controller from computing control actions which create problematic operating conditions for process equipment. However, no rigorous investigation has yet been performed to analyze whether, when a …

Discovering cancer subtypes is useful for guiding clinical treatment of multiple cancers. Progressive profile technologies for tissue have accumulated diverse types of data. Based on these types of expression data, various computational methods have been proposed to predict cancer subtypes. It is crucial to study how to better integrate these multiple profiles of data. In this paper, we collect multiple profiles of data for five cancers on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Then, we construct three similarity kernels for all patients of the same cancer by gene expression, miRNA expression and isoform expression data. We also propose a novel unsupervised …

Optimal Control Of Wave Energy Converters, Ossama Abdelkhalik, Rush D. Robinett Iii, Shangyan Zou, Giorgio Bacelli, David G. Wilson, Umesh Korde

Michigan Tech Patents

A wave energy converter and method for extracting energy from water waves maximizes the energy extraction per cycle by estimating an excitation force of heave wave motion on the buoy, computing a control force from the estimated excitation force using a dynamic model, and applying the computed control force to the buoy to extract energy from the heave wave motion. Analysis and numerical simulations demonstrate that the optimal control of a heave wave energy converter is, in general, in the form of a bang-singular-bang control; in which the optimal control at a given time can be either in the singular …
