Event-Based Visual-Inertial Odometry On A Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Kaleb J. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Event-based cameras are a new type of visual sensor that operate under a unique paradigm. These cameras provide asynchronous data on the log-level changes in light intensity for individual pixels, independent of other pixels' measurements. Through the hardware-level approach to change detection, these cameras can achieve microsecond fidelity, millisecond latency, ultra-wide dynamic range, and all with very low power requirements. The advantages provided by event-based cameras make them excellent candidates for visual odometry (VO) for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) navigation. This document presents the research and implementation of an event-based visual inertial odometry (EVIO) pipeline, which estimates a vehicle's 6-degrees-of-freedom …

Theses and Dissertations

This research is focused on determining which metals or combinations of metals form effective electrical contacts on hydrothermally synthesized UO2 substrates to allow for additional work in characterization of the material as well as the feasibility of its use in semiconductor devices such as solid-state neutron detectors. A methodology was established for selection of candidate metals. Target mixtures composed of Au, Ag, Pt, and Mg were chosen along with several single-metals. Thin metal films were deposited onto tungsten probe tips and hydrothermally synthesized UO2 samples to allow for analysis of mechanical and deposited contact to the substrates through I-V measurements.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed Waveform Effects On Passive Bistatic Radar, Forrest D. Taylor Mar 2019

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed Waveform Effects On Passive Bistatic Radar, Forrest D. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Communication waveforms act as signals of opportunity for passive radars. However, these signals of opportunity suffer from range-Doppler processing losses due to their high range sidelobes and pulse-diverse waveform aspects. Signals such as the long term evolution (LTE) encode information within the phase and amplitude of the waveform. This research explores aspects of the LTE, such as the encoding scheme and bandwidth modes on passive bistatic Doppler radar. Signal space-time adaptive processing (STAP) performance is evaluated and parameters are compared with the signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) metric.

Plasma Treatment Method For Ohmic Contacts On Zinc Oxide Thin Film Transistors, Blaine Z. Underwood Mar 2019

Plasma Treatment Method For Ohmic Contacts On Zinc Oxide Thin Film Transistors, Blaine Z. Underwood

Theses and Dissertations

This research utilizes plasma treatments as a method to decrease the contact resistance on zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film transistors (TFT). In recent years, researchers have achieved gigahertz RF switch cutoff frequency with ZnO TFTs. To further increase the cutoff frequency, the total resistance of this device must be minimized. Modern ZnO TFTs are fabricated with submicron channel lengths, which contains minimal resistance due to the TFT channel, making contact resistance significant to the total resistance of the device. This research developed a method to integrate plasma treatments into the fabrication of ZnO TFT to decrease the contact resistance, thus …

A Mems Dual Vertical Electrometer And Electric Field-Mill, George C. Underwood Mar 2019

A Mems Dual Vertical Electrometer And Electric Field-Mill, George C. Underwood

Theses and Dissertations

Presented is the first iteration of a Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) dual vertical electrometer and electric field-mill (EFM). The device uses a resonating structure as a variable capacitor that converts the presence of a charge or field into an electric signal. Previous MEMS electrometers are lateral electrometers with laterally spaced electrodes that resonate tangentially with respect to each other. Vertical electrometers, as the name suggests, have vertically spaced electrodes that resonate transversely with respect to each other. The non-tangential movement reduces damping in the system. Both types demonstrate comparable performance, but the vertical electrometer does so at a fraction of the …

Confirmation Bias Estimation From Electroencephalography With Machine Learning, Micah Villarreal Mar 2019

Confirmation Bias Estimation From Electroencephalography With Machine Learning, Micah Villarreal

Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive biases are known to plague human decision making and can have disastrous effects in the fast-paced environments of military operators. Traditionally, behavioral methods are employed to measure the level of bias in a decision. However, these measures can be hindered by a multitude of subjective factors and cannot be collected in real-time. This work investigates enhancing the current measures of estimating confirmation bias with additional behavior patterns and physiological variables to explore the viability of real-time bias detection. Confirmation bias in decisions is estimated by modeling the relationship between Electroencephalography (EEG) signals and behavioral data using machine learning methods.

High Resolution Low-Bandwidth Real-Time Reconnaissance Using Structure From Motion With Planar Homography Estimation, Christian M.A. Arnold

Theses and Dissertations

Aerial real-time surveillance exists in a paradigm balancing the constraints of delivering high quality data and transporting data quickly. Typically, to have more of one, sacrifices must be made to the other. This is true of the environment in which an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operates, where real-time communication may be done through a low-bandwidth satellite connection resulting in low-resolution data, and serves as the primary limiting factor in all intelligence operations. Through the use of efficient computer vision techniques, we propose a new Structure from Motion (SfM) method capable of compressing high-resolution data, and delivering that data in real-time. …

Autonomous Association Of Geo Rso Observations Using Deep Neural Networks, Ian W. Mcquaid Mar 2019

Autonomous Association Of Geo Rso Observations Using Deep Neural Networks, Ian W. Mcquaid

Theses and Dissertations

Ground-based non-resolved optical observations of resident space objects (RSOs) in geosynchronous orbit (GEO) represent the majority of the space surveillance network’s (SSN’s) deep-space tracking. Reliable and accurate tracking necessitates temporal separation of the observations. This requires that subsequent observations be associated with prior observations of a given RSO before they can be used to create or refine that RSO’s ephemeris. The use of astrometric data (e.g. topocentric angular position) alone for this association task is complicated by RSO maneuvers between observations, and by RSOs operating in close proximity. Accurately associating an observation with an RSO thus motivates the use of …
