Fly ash from the combustion of eastern Kentucky Fire Clay coal in a southeastern United States pulverized-coal power plant was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). TEM combined with elemental analysis via energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) showed that rare earth elements (REE; specifically, La, Ce, Nd, Pr, and Sm) were distributed within glassy particles. In certain cases, the REE were accompanied by phosphorous, suggesting a monazite or similar mineral form. However, the electron diffraction patterns of apparent phosphate minerals were not definitive, and P-lean regions of the glass consisted …

Distributed Wireless Algorithms For Rfid Systems: Grouping Proofs And Cardinality Estimation, Vanya D. Cherneva

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The breadth and depth of the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) are becoming more substantial. RFID is a technology useful for identifying unique items through radio waves. We design algorithms on RFID-based systems for the Grouping Proof and Cardinality Estimation problems.

A grouping-proof protocol is evidence that a reader simultaneously scanned the RFID tags in a group. In many practical scenarios, grouping-proofs greatly expand the potential of RFID-based systems such as supply chain applications, simultaneous scanning of multiple forms of IDs in banks or airports, and government paperwork. The design of RFID grouping-proofs that provide optimal security, privacy, and …

Assessment And Correction Of Lidar-Derived Dems In The Coastal Marshes Of Louisiana, William M. Lauve Mar 2019

Assessment And Correction Of Lidar-Derived Dems In The Coastal Marshes Of Louisiana, William M. Lauve

LSU Master's Theses

The onset of airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) has resulted in expansive, precise digital elevation models (DEMs). DEMs are essential for modeling complex systems, such as the coastal land margin of Louisiana. They are used for many applications (e.g. tide, storm surge, and ecological modeling) and by diverse groups (e.g. state and federal agencies, NGOs, and academia). However, in a marsh environment, it is difficult for airborne lidar to produce accurate bare-earth measurements and even accurate elevations are rarely verified by ground truth data. The accuracy of lidar in marshes is limited by the sensor’s resolution …

ASEE IL-IN Section Conference

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are offered for many different subject areas such as STEM, Arts, Medicine, and Business, with differences in each subject area. In this study, we focus on STEM MOOCs and their unique challenges. In order to design better MOOCs to encourage engagement, it is important to understand learners expectations and preferences based on the subject area by analyzing end-of-course evaluation surveys of STEM MOOCs. We analyzed open-ended learner feedback for two post-survey questions for 110 unique STEM MOOCs (some with multiple re-runs) with a total of 8100 responses, offered on the FutureLearn platform. The end-of-course survey …

This poster advances a new framework for the senior design course in order to deepen engineering design experience for engineering students. The proposed framework for the new senior design course while retains the traditional topics such as problem identification, conceptual design and analysis, prototyping and the preparation of a work schedule required to carry out the project, it fosters an early in the cycle start, typically after week 6, towards the design conceptualization and prototyping in the first academic semester. This is in stark contrast with traditional practices where the design conceptualization and prototyping largely takes place in the second …

Modeling Of Fluid Injection For Hydraulic Fracturing Initiation In Porous Rock Formations, Krishna Adhikari Mar 2019

Modeling Of Fluid Injection For Hydraulic Fracturing Initiation In Porous Rock Formations, Krishna Adhikari

LSU Master's Theses

Hydraulic fracturing has been widely opted in recent times to simulate the unconventional reservoirs and thus, has become key a subject of interest in petroleum engineering. The stress concentration around the borehole affects the breakdown pressure and fracture reopening pressure during the hydraulic fracturing treatments. Thus, the state of stress around borehole wall and its surrounding rocks due to instantaneous drilling and a fluid injection at borehole surface needs to be determined accurately to initiate the hydraulic fractures. This research intends to derive the analytical stress solution of inclined borehole subjected to time-dependent fluid injection and in-situ stress, verify the …

Natural Gas Conversion Into Value Added Chemicals Using Solid Acid Catalysts, Swarom Ravindra Kanitkar Mar 2019

Natural Gas Conversion Into Value Added Chemicals Using Solid Acid Catalysts, Swarom Ravindra Kanitkar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Direct, non-oxidative conversion of natural gas to value-added chemicals has been identified as one of the grand challenges of the 21st century. Circumventing indirect and costly reforming steps is highly sought after and solid acids can play an important role in that.

The direct conversion of methane to higher hydrocarbons and hydrogen can be catalyzed using “superacids” at < 450 °C. Reported superacid catalysts in solid, liquid, and gas phase included sulfated zirconia (SZ), HF-SbF5, FSO3H-SbF5, and HBr-AlBr3. Liquid and gas phase superacids presented difficulties in separation while the solid ones provided low yields. Here, we report a new class of Br-based solid superacids, AlBrx/H-ZSM-5 (“ABZ-5”, …

Reliability-Based Shear Rating Of Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders Considering Capacity Adjustment Factor, Alaa I. Chehab, Christopher D. Eamon Mar 2019

Reliability-Based Shear Rating Of Prestressed Concrete Bridge Girders Considering Capacity Adjustment Factor, Alaa I. Chehab, Christopher D. Eamon

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications

In this study, the reliability of prestressed concrete (PC) bridge girders in the shear rating process is quantified, where the use of a simple procedure to enhance the accuracy of shear capacity evaluation for rating is evaluated. It was found that the approximate methods used in code-based procedures to develop shear resistance used for reliability calibration of the AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications and the Manual for Bridge Evaluation result in larger discrepancies in reliability than previously assumed, as well as substantially conservative shear capacity evaluation in most cases. To examine the effects of using a more accurate shear rating process, …

Robotic Motion Generation By Using Spatial-Temporal Patterns From Human Demonstrations, Yongqiang Huang Mar 2019

Robotic Motion Generation By Using Spatial-Temporal Patterns From Human Demonstrations, Yongqiang Huang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Robots excel in manufacturing facilities because the tasks are repetitive and do not change. However, when the tasks change, which happens in almost all tasks that humans perform daily, such as cutting, pouring, and grasping, etc., robots perform much worse. We aim at teaching robots to perform tasks that are subject to change using demonstrations collected from humans, a problem referred to as learning from demonstration (LfD).

LfD consists of two parts: the data of human demonstrations, and the algorithm that extracts knowledge from the data to perform the same motions. Similarly, this thesis is divided into two parts. The …

Force Feedback And Intelligent Workspace Selection For Legged Locomotion Over Uneven Terrain, John Rippetoe Mar 2019

Force Feedback And Intelligent Workspace Selection For Legged Locomotion Over Uneven Terrain, John Rippetoe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Legged robots present an incredible opportunity for humanity to conduct dangerous operations such as search and rescue, disaster recovery, and planetary exploration without ever placing themselves in harms way. The ability of a leg to more freely dictate its shape, orientation, and length gives it tremendous mobility and adaptability demanded of a system intended for operation outside of a controlled environment. However, one only need look at the average cat, dog, or friendly neighborhood squirrel to understand the immense gap that exists between what is possible of legged systems and their current set of capabilities.

Investigation Of Electronic And Optical Properties Of 2-Dimensional Semiconductor Tin Selenide (Snse) Thin Films, Shakila Afrin Mar 2019

Investigation Of Electronic And Optical Properties Of 2-Dimensional Semiconductor Tin Selenide (Snse) Thin Films, Shakila Afrin

Dissertations and Theses

Over the last 5 decades, the semiconductor industry has been well served by Si based technology due to its abundant availability, lower manufacturing cost, large wafer sizes and less complexity in fabrication. Over this period, electronic devices and integrated systems have been miniaturized by downscaling of the transistors. The miniaturization has been guided by the Moore's law where the numbers of transistors have doubled over every two years. However, the trend of transistor miniaturization is fast approaching its limit. Hence, alternate and innovative solutions are necessary to tackle this problem and this propels the research for finding novel materials with …

Protein-Polymer Conjugates Synthesized Using Water-Soluble Azlactone-Functionalized Polymers Enable Receptor-Specific Cellular Uptake Toward Targeted Drug Delivery, Julia S. Kim, Allison R. Sirois, Analia J. Vazquez Cegla, Eugenie Jumai'an, Naomi Murata, Maren E. Buck, Sarah J. Moore

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Conjugation of proteins to drug-loaded polymeric structures is an attractive strategy for facilitating target-specific drug delivery for a variety of clinical needs. Polymers currently available for conjugation to proteins generally have limited chemical versatility for subsequent drug loading. Many polymers that do have chemical functionality useful for drug loading are often insoluble in water, making it difficult to synthesize functional protein–polymer conjugates for targeted drug delivery. In this work, we demonstrate that reactive, azlactone-functionalized polymers can be grafted to proteins, conjugated to a small-molecule fluorophore, and subsequently internalized into cells in a receptor-specific manner. Poly(2-vinyl-4,4-dimethylazlactone), synthesized using reversible addition–fragmentation chain …

The Effect Of Defects And Surface Modification On Biomolecular Assembly And Transport, Haneen Martinez Mar 2019

The Effect Of Defects And Surface Modification On Biomolecular Assembly And Transport, Haneen Martinez

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Nanoscale transport using the kinesin-microtubule (MT) biomolecular system has been successfully used in a wide range of nanotechnological applications including self-assembly, nanofluidic transport, and biosensing. Most of these applications use the ‘gliding motility geometry’, in which surface-adhered kinesin motors attach and propel MT filaments across the surface, a process driven by ATP hydrolysis. It has been demonstrated that active assembly facilitated by these biomolecular motors results in complex, non-equilibrium nanostructures currently unattainable through conventional self-assembly methods. In particular, MTs functionalized with biotin assemble into rings and spools upon introduction of streptavidin and/or streptavidin-coated nanoparticles. Upon closer examination of these structures …

Limit Equilibrium Method-Based Shear Strength Prediction For Corroded Reinforced Concrete Beam With Inclined Bars, Yafei Ma, Baoyong Lu, Zhongzhao Guo, Lei Wang, Hailong Chen, Jianren Zhang

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Shear strength is a widely investigated parameter for reinforced concrete structures. The corrosion of reinforcement results in shear strength reduction. Corrosion has become one of the main deterioration factors in reinforced concrete beam. This paper proposes a shear strength model for beams with inclined bars based on a limit equilibrium method. The proposed model can be applied to both corroded and uncorroded reinforced concrete beams. Besides the tensile strength of longitudinal steel bars, the shear capacity provided by the concrete on the top of the diagonal crack, the tensile force of the shear steel at the diagonal crack, the degradation …

Tin assisted fully exposed Pt clusters are fabricated on the core-shell nanodiamond@graphene (ND@G) hybrid support (a-PtSn/ND@G). The obtained atomically dispersed Pt clusters, with an average Pt atom number of 3, were anchored over the ND@Gsupport by the assistance of Sn atoms as a partition agent and through the Pt-C bond between Pt clusters and defect-rich graphene nanoshell. The atomically dispersed Pt clusters guaranteed a full metal availability to the reactants, a high thermal stability, and an optimized adsorption/desorption behavior. It inhibits the side reactions and enhances catalytic performance in direct dehydrogenation of n-butane at a low temperature of 450 °C, …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

After smoke from burning biomass is emitted into the atmosphere, chemical and physical processes change the composition and amount of organic aerosol present in the aged, diluted plume. During the fourth Fire Lab at Missoula Experiment, we performed smog‐chamber experiments to investigate formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and multiphase oxidation of primary organic aerosol (POA). We simulated atmospheric aging of diluted smoke from a variety of biomass fuels while measuring particle composition using high‐resolution aerosol mass spectrometry. We quantified SOA formation using a tracer ion for low‐volatility POA as a reference standard (akin to a naturally occurring internal standard). …

Deswelling Induced Morphological Changes In Dual Ph And Temperature Responsive Ultra-Low Crosslinked Poly (N-Isopropyl Acrylamide)-Co-Acrylic Acid Microgels, Molla R. Islam, Maddie Tumbarello, L. Andrew Lyon Mar 2019

Deswelling Induced Morphological Changes In Dual Ph And Temperature Responsive Ultra-Low Crosslinked Poly (N-Isopropyl Acrylamide)-Co-Acrylic Acid Microgels, Molla R. Islam, Maddie Tumbarello, L. Andrew Lyon

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels prepared without exogenous cross-linker are extremely “soft” as a result of their very low cross-linking density, with network connectivity arising only from the self-crosslinking of pNIPAm chains. As a result of this extreme softness, our group and others have taken interest in using these materials in a variety of bioengineering applications, while also pursuing studies of their fundamental properties. Here, we report deswelling triggered structural changes in poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (ULC10AAc) microgels prepared by precipitation polymerization. Dynamic light scattering suggests that the deswelling of these particles not only depends on the collapse of …

34-Inch Tall Three Beam Transition To Concrete Buttress, Scott Rosenbaugh, Wyatt Fallet, Ronald K. Faller, Robert W. Bielenberg, Jennifer Schmidt Mar 2019

34-Inch Tall Three Beam Transition To Concrete Buttress, Scott Rosenbaugh, Wyatt Fallet, Ronald K. Faller, Robert W. Bielenberg, Jennifer Schmidt

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

Roadway resurfacing and overlay projects effectively reduce the height of roadside barriers placed adjacent to the roadway, which can negatively affect their crashworthiness. More recently, bridge rails and concrete barriers have been installed with slightly increased heights to account for future overlays. However, adjacent guardrails and approach transitions have not yet been modified to account for overlays. The objective of this project was to develop an increased-height, approach guardrail transition (AGT) to be crashworthy both before and after roadway overlays of up to 3 in. (76 mm).

A 34-in. (864-mm) tall, thrie beam transition was designed such that the system …

Fabrication Of Biased-Magnetorheological Elastomers (B-Mre) Based On Magnetized Ferromagnetic Particles, Choonghan Lee, Woosoon Yim Mar 2019

Fabrication Of Biased-Magnetorheological Elastomers (B-Mre) Based On Magnetized Ferromagnetic Particles, Choonghan Lee, Woosoon Yim

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs), like MR fluids, exploit magnetic forces between ferromagnetic particles to produce a material with instantaneously adjustable properties of stiffness and damping with external magnetic fields. In MREs, the particles are a part of a structured elastomer matrix, and an external magnetic field is applied to achieve an instantaneous change of stiffness due to magnetic forces between particles. A drawback of conventional MREs is its inability of softening (reduce stiffness) under an external field. Many engineering applications need an instant change of its stiffness in both directions, which requires a magnetic bias embedded in the MRE. One way …
