Interrogation Of Spent Nuclear Fuel Casks Using Cosmic-Ray Muon Computed Tomography, Daniel C. Poulson
Interrogation Of Spent Nuclear Fuel Casks Using Cosmic-Ray Muon Computed Tomography, Daniel C. Poulson
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
Properly accounting and safeguarding spent nuclear fuel are key components in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s mission of non-proliferation. Currently, no instruments are deployed that are able to verify the spent nuclear fuel contents of dry storage casks. Cosmic-ray muons provide an ideal probe for the heavily shielded casks due to their ability to penetrate thick, dense materials. Coulombic scattering of the muons, to first order, is proportional to the Z2/A of the material; this makes it especially sensitive to actinides, such as uranium and plutonium. The combination of these traits allows muons to be used to image and verify …

Benchmarking Image Processing Algorithms For Unmanned Aerial System-Assisted Crack Detection In Concrete Structures, Sattar Dorafshan, Robert J. Thomas, Marc Maguire
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper summarizes the results of traditional image processing algorithms for detection of defects in concrete using images taken by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). Such algorithms are useful for improving the accuracy of crack detection during autonomous inspection of bridges and other structures, and they have yet to be compared and evaluated on a dataset of concrete images taken by UAS. The authors created a generic image processing algorithm for crack detection, which included the major steps of filter design, edge detection, image enhancement, and segmentation, designed to uniformly compare different edge detectors. Edge detection was carried out by six …

The Effect Of Mechanical Agitator Geometry On Catheter Directed Thrombectomy, Sanghun Alex Lee
The Effect Of Mechanical Agitator Geometry On Catheter Directed Thrombectomy, Sanghun Alex Lee
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a vascular disease in which a blood clot forms inside of a vein, most often deep in the legs, groin, or arm. Two types of VTE exist, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT occurs when a clot in a deep vein forms, risking embolism and causing swelling as the clot obstructs blood flow. An embolism occurs when a part or all the thrombus breaks off and travels in the circulation, getting lodged in the lungs. A pulmonary embolism is a very serious medical condition and can be fatal if not treated immediately. Current …

Capillary Penetration Method For Measuring Wetting Properties Of Carbon Ionomer Films For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (Pemfc) Applications, Sofyane Abbou, Kazuya Tajiri, K. T. Alofari, Ezequiel F. Medici, A. T. Haug, Jeffrey S. Allen
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
In this work, capillary rise experiments were performed to assess the wetting properties of carbon-ionomer (CI) films. The samples were attached to a micro-balance and then immersed into liquid water to (i) measure the mass gain from the liquid uptake and (ii) estimate the (external) contact angle to water (typical value around 140°). The results showed that drying the CI films under low vacuum significantly impacted the CI film wettability. The influence of the ionomer content on the CI films’ wettability was investigated with various ionomer to carbon (I/C) ratios: 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4. No significant variation of the …

Automatic Look-Up Table Based Real-Time Phase Unwrapping For Phase Measuring Profilometry And Optimal Reference Frequency Selection, Jianwen Song, Daniel L. Lau, Yo-Sung Ho, Kai Liu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
For temporal phase unwrapping in phase measuring profilometry, it has recently been reported that two phases with co-prime frequencies can be absolutely unwrapped using a look-up table; however, frequency selection and table construction has been performed manually without optimization. In this paper, a universal phase unwrapping method is proposed to unwrap phase flexibly and automatically by using geometric analysis, and thus we can programmatically build a one-dimensional or two-dimensional look-up table for arbitrary two co-prime frequencies to correctly unwrap phases in real time. Moreover, a phase error model related to the defocus effect is derived to figure out an optimal …

Sliding-Mode-Observer-Based Position Estimation For Sensorless Control Of The Planar Switched Reluctance Motor, Jundi Sun, Guang-Zhong Cao, Su-Dan Huang, Yeping Peng, Jiangbiao He, Qing-Quan Qian
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a position estimation method for a planar switched reluctance motor (PSRM). In the method, a second-order sliding mode observer (SMO) is used to achieve sensorless control of a PSRM for the first time. A sensorless closed-loop control strategy based on the SMO without a position sensor for the PSRM is constructed. The SMO mainly consists of a flux linkage estimation, an adaptive current estimation, an observing error calculation, and a position estimation section. An adaptive current observer is applied in the current estimation section to minimize the error between the measured and estimated currents and to increase …

Automated Generation Of Daily Evacuation Paths In 4d Bim, Kyungki Kim, Yong-Cheol Lee
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Spatial movements of workers and equipment should be carefully planned according to project plans. In particular, it is crucial for workers’ safety to prepare emergency evacuation paths according to changing construction site configurations and construction progress. However, creating evacuation paths for all crews for each day can be an extremely labor-intensive task if it is done manually. Consequently, in most construction projects, evacuation plans are not provided to managers and crews throughout the entire construction. Even state-of-the-art technologies do not suggest ways to generate evacuation paths according to changing progresses presented in 4-Dimensional Building Information Model (4D BIM). This research …

Public Blockchain Scalability: Advancements, Challenges And The Future, Amritraj .
Master of Science in Software Engineering Theses
In the last decade, blockchain has emerged as one of the most influential innovations in software architecture and technology. Ideally, blockchains are designed to be architecturally and politically decentralized, similar to the Internet. But recently, public and permissionless blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum have faced stumbling blocks in the form of scalability. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum process fewer than 20 transactions per second, which is significantly lower than their centralized counterpart such as VISA that can process approximately 1,700 transactions per second. In realizing this hindrance in the wide range adoption of blockchains for building advanced and large scalable …
Driving Performances Assessment Based On Speed Variation Using Dedicated Route Truck Gps Data, Ying Li, Li Zhao, Laurence R. Rilett
Driving Performances Assessment Based On Speed Variation Using Dedicated Route Truck Gps Data, Ying Li, Li Zhao, Laurence R. Rilett
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
It was hypothesized that a driver is not safe when travel speed is too high and also not necessarily safe when travel speed is too low. Based on this hypothesis, this paper studied the risky driving performances by measuring speed variations of a driver’s recurrent trips in two perspectives: 1) driver profiles, which scored the risk on-road driving of each driver and 2) driving patterns, which reflected the risk speed patterns of a type of drivers. The proposed method was tested on a 30-day global positioning system (GPS) dataset, collected from 100 trucks. The study first split the raw dataset …

The distribution of bit patterns is an important measure to check the randomness of a sequence. The authors of this paper observed this crucial property in a binary sequence which generated by using a primitive polynomial, trace function, and Legendre symbol defined over the sub extension field. The authors create a new dimension in the sequence generation research area by considering the sub extension field, whereas all our previous works are focused in the prime field. In terms of the distribution of bit patterns property, this research work has notable outcomes more specifically the binary sequence (defined over the sub …

Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy- Surface Sensitive In Situ Label-Free Spectroelectrochemistry, Lie Wu, Jian-Long Sun, Xiu-E Jiang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS), especially in attenuated total reflectance (ATR) mode, taking advantages of surface-enhancement and near-field optical effect of enhancing substrate, is a ultra-sensitive infrared spectroscopy, which could achieve surface-selected detection at a sub-monolayer level. Since the enhancing substrate could simultaneously serve as a working electrode, ATR-SEIRAS is a readily surface-sensitive in situ label-free spectroelectrochemistry technique. With the advantages of small influence from metal species on enhancement effect, good potential reversibility of spectra, simple surface selection rule and sensitivity to polar molecules, ATR-SEIRAS has been widely applied in the fields of orientation analysis and species identification of interfacial …

Nitrite has a negative impact on the environment and human health. The long-term consumption of nitrite-containing foods has a carcinogenic risk. Therefore, the analysis and detection of nitrite are important. It is of great significance to develop high-efficiency electrocatalysts to achieve high sensitivity and selectivity for nitrite detection. The cobalt phosphide nano-array (CoP/TM) was obtained by hydrothermal and low-temperature phosphating. The electrochemical test results show that the constructed CoP/TM was a highly efficient electrochemical reduction nitrite catalyst with the excellent sensing performance and response time less than 3 s, as well as the linear detection range of 1.0 μmol·L-1 …

Design And Creation Of A System Of Machines To Automate Quality Control Processes For Atms, Miguel D. Pedrozo
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
This project is based around the quality control processes used to test ATMs. Currently, a person will manually run through each function of the ATM in order to find modes of failure. As the case with all repetitive jobs, it is an unwanted task and is simple enough to be automated. The new solution I propose allows for a system of devices to operate the functions of the ATM autonomously with little to no human intervention. Additionally, this solution is more reliable when diagnosing a problem as it will eventually communicate with the ATM directly in a closed loop system …
