Predicting Power-Transformer Bushings’ Seismic Vulnerability: Mounting Stiffness And Coupling, Jon Bender, Arvin Farid Jun 2019

Predicting Power-Transformer Bushings’ Seismic Vulnerability: Mounting Stiffness And Coupling, Jon Bender, Arvin Farid

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Large power transformers are both expensive and vulnerable to seismic failure. Excessive amplification of earthquake loading to power transformer bushings beyond the bushings’ rated strength can occur if the system’s structural dynamics produce unpredictable and unfavorable resonance behavior. Determining the degree of vulnerability to large seismic amplifications is not straight-forward, and general design recommendations do not always resolve problems that can potentially arise. This paper considers a number of Case studies in an attempt to postulate a set of critical factors, which might facilitate better prediction of bushing amplification. Further, several additional Case studies are summarized in order to add …

Feasibility Study Of Dartmouth's Renewable Energy Future, Lily R. Hanig Jun 2019

Feasibility Study Of Dartmouth's Renewable Energy Future, Lily R. Hanig

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

This is a feasibility study of Dartmouth's Renewable Energy propositions. This study analyzes the carbon offsets of implementing a 13 MW solar PV system at Oak Hill. This study used the Energy Database to calculate the carbon emissions of the college for 2010 (the baseline year) and 2018. It also projected carbon emissions for the year 2025 assuming the Oak Hill solar PV system is implemented as outlined and the biomass plant is implemented with similar fuel ratios to nearby biomass plant projects. It was found that Dartmouth should sufficiently make its carbon emissions reductions goals for 2025.

Spatial Frequency Domain Imaging Of Short-Wave Infrared Fluorescence For Biomedical Applications, Joseph P. Leonor Jun 2019

Spatial Frequency Domain Imaging Of Short-Wave Infrared Fluorescence For Biomedical Applications, Joseph P. Leonor

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Fluorescence imaging has become a standard in many clinical applications, such as tumor and vasculature imaging. One application that is becoming more prominent in cancer treatment is fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS). Currently, FGS allows surgeons the ability to visually navigate tumors and tissue structures intraoperatively. As a result, they can remove tumor more efficiently while maintaining critical structures within the patient, creating better outcomes and lower recovery times. However, background fluorescence and inability to localize depth create challenges when determining resection boundaries.

Different techniques, such as spatially modulating the illumination and imaging at longer light wavelengths, have been developed to accurately …

Surface Engineering Of Annealed High Entropy Alloys Towards Thermodynamically Stable, Anti-Oxidation, Solar Selective Absorbers, Sheppard R. Somers

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

Concentrating solar power (CSP) systems require receivers that maintain their physical properties at the high operating temperature and are absorbent. The high entropy alloy Fe28.2Ni18.8Mn32.9Al14.1Cr6 (HEA) investigated in this thesis fills these needs by harnessing the HEA’s oxidation process to create a selective solar absorbing layer that grows at a parabolic rate at CSP operating temperatures. Results of this research demonstrate that annealing processes of HEA can yield over 90% solar thermal efficiency by engineering the surface oxidation to be both physically and optically optimized for absorption.

Problem-Based Learning As A Pedagogy For Individual Students -- Quantifying The Long-Term Effects Of Land Subsidence And Rising Sea Levels In Coastal Areas For Greater Student Engagement, Sanjay Tewari

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Course-based class discussions usually are limited to course syllabus and topics of lectures. If a discussion goes beyond course syllabus and the topics, usually there is a time constraint of class/lab periods, keeping educators and students from going deeper. Even without time constraints of class/lab settings, some students get engaged in the overall learning process more when they are challenged or tasked to solve a problem. This paper focuses on the pedagogical aspect of problem-based learning and its application for greater engagement of these students in quantifying the long term effects of land subsidence and rising sea levels in coastal …

Nano-Enhanced Composite Membranes For Water Desalination, Benjamin Fredrik Victor Sundling Von Fürstenrecht Jun 2019

Nano-Enhanced Composite Membranes For Water Desalination, Benjamin Fredrik Victor Sundling Von Fürstenrecht

Materials Engineering

In theory single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) will aid in ion rejection due hydrophobicity and smoothness of the SWCNT. An efficient means of water desalination utilizing SWCNT in a membrane seems plausible. A lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) solution was made with a synthesized polymerizable surfactant methacryloxy ethyl hexadecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide (C16MA) to help with vertical alignment of SWCNT. Due to SWCNT lack of solubility and tendency to agglomerate in water, a dispersion performed using an inert surfactant centrimonium bromide (CTAB) to make sure that the SWCNT were homogeneously dispersed in the solution without altering the hexagonal packing factor of …

Seismic Performance Of Mid-Rise Code-Conforming X-Braced Steel Frames, Mokhtar Ansari, Hosein Gholi Pour, Amir Safiey

Publications

Prolixity and complexities inherent in the nonlinear dynamic analysis (NDA) impel engineers to lean towards nonlinear static analysis (NSA) in practice. This paper partly explores differences and similarities in responses obtained from these two simulation techniques. The scope of the study is narrowed down to ubiquitous regular code-conforming mid-rise steel X-braced frames. Different common lateral load patterns are coupled with NSA to study their interactive effects on responses. The modal nonlinear static analysis is also carried out, where deemed necessary. NDA using three different earthquake records are conducted as well, to validate NSA results. Results of nonlinear analyses are undertaken …

Nonlinear Mechanical Properties Of Road Pavements: Geometric Symmetries Explain The Empirical Difference Between Roads Built On Clay Vs. Granular Soils, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is empirically known that roads built on clay soils have different nonlinear mechanical properties than roads built on granular soils (such as gravel or sand). In this paper, we show that this difficult-to-explain empirical fact can be naturally explained if we analyze the corresponding geometric symmetries.

2219 aluminum has been used extensively in aerospace applications due to its ability to retain strength in large section thicknesses, thus making it ideal for large forgings. However, the Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization (MMPDS) handbook, a source of design data for aerospace industry applications, lacks information on 2219 in the T852 condition, particularly concerning the behavior of the alloy under cyclic loading conditions. Data was collected for forgings of 2219-T852 aluminum as produced by Weber Metals to determine the fatigue life of the alloy-temper combination and to assess the effects of forge thickness and orientation on fatigue life. …

Cisco Nexus 9200 Robustness Redesign, Colin Berge, Ethan Gold, Cole Christopherson, Rahul Makhijani Jun 2019

Cisco Nexus 9200 Robustness Redesign, Colin Berge, Ethan Gold, Cole Christopherson, Rahul Makhijani

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Certain configurations of Cisco's Nexus 9200 product experienced issues with bending during shipping. Two solutions were developed to eliminate this problem: an external brace that could quickly address the problem yet was expensive and unsustainable, and a redesigned chassis, which was more economical but came with a longer time to implement. Real world packaging and shipping conditions were simulated in SolidWorks and Finite Element Analysis was used to model the stresses experienced when the product is dropped. Both designs were found to significantly reduce stress in critical areas, thus reducing the chance of failure and the cost of the problem. …

An Investigation Of The Anomalous Thrust Capabilities Of The Electromagnetic Drive, Hannah J. Simons Jun 2019

An Investigation Of The Anomalous Thrust Capabilities Of The Electromagnetic Drive, Hannah J. Simons

Physics

The Electromagnetic Drive (EMDrive) is a propellant-less engine concept hypothesized by aero- space engineer Roger Shawyer. Shawyer’s proposed thruster technology is grounded on the theory of electromagnetic resonant behavior exhibited by a radiofrequency cavity, though the source of any generated thrust is undetermined by current physical laws. NASA Eagleworks Laboratories at John- son Space Center conducted a vacuum test campaign to investigate previously reported anomalous thrust capabilities of such a closed radiofrequency cavity, using a low-thrust torsion pendulum. The team published positive, although small-scaled thrust results in 2017. Following NASA Eagleworks breakthrough result and operating under the assumption that the …

Weight Controlled Electric Skateboard, Zachary Barram, Carson Bertozzi, Vishnu Dodballapur

Computer Engineering

Technology and the way that humans interact is becoming more vital and omnipresent with every passing day. However, human interface device designers suffer from the increasingly popular “designed for me or people like me” syndrome. This design philosophy inherently limits accessibility and usability of technology to those like the designer. This places severe limits of usability to those who are not fully able as well as leaves non-traditional human interface devices unexplored. This project set out to explore a previously uncharted human interface device, on an electric skateboard, and compare it send user experience with industry leading human interface devices.

Effects Of Glycation On Blood Protein Interactions With Nanomaterials: A Biophysical And Cytotoxicity Study, Karl Baumgartner, Madeline Eiken Jun 2019

Effects Of Glycation On Blood Protein Interactions With Nanomaterials: A Biophysical And Cytotoxicity Study, Karl Baumgartner, Madeline Eiken

Bioengineering Senior Theses

When engineered nanoparticles (NPs) enter into a biological system, the proteins and biomolecules in the system adsorb to the NP surface to form a “protein corona” (PC). The PC greatly influences NP transformations, biological interactions, and cell response. Further complicating the development of NPs for biomedical applications, disease states alter the population of proteins and changes the biophysical features of individual proteins through posttranslational modifications. Here-in, we aim to understand how glycation of the PC, as in uncontrolled diabetes, alters the NP-PC interaction and toxicity by conducting biochemistry and cell toxicity experiments. We focus upon 40 and 80 nm citrate-coated …
