Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

Arts integration into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subject areas is currently an important area of investigation. This study developed a grounded theory of how artmaking of a mobile related to fossil life of the Devonian period engendered geoscience inquiry. Data were collected from elementary students entering fourth to sixth grade (7 male, 9 female) attending a week-long summer camp at a Midwestern university. Students engaged in a daily hour-long class creating fossil mobiles and learning geoscience content through illustrated slide shows, form and function sets of materials related to Devonian fossils, fossil books, and a fossil hunter- fossil …

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

This experimental study was undertaken with preservice teachers to test whether the use of science integration into arts education increases demonstration of science details and creative features in artwork. Two conditions were created: arts-focused and science-focused; gouache still-life paintings were produced and analyzed, and an attitude survey was completed. The results suggested that science integration into visual arts classes increased creativity for the arts-focused condition and increased science concepts in the science-focused condition. Participants in both conditions reported positive attitudes, specifically, high levels of enjoyment, alluded to lack of experience with arts and creative projects, and expressed desire for more …

Synergy: An Energy Monitoring And Visualization System, Sarah Johnson, Pearce Ropion Jun 2019

Synergy: An Energy Monitoring And Visualization System, Sarah Johnson, Pearce Ropion

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

The key to becoming a more sustainable society is first learning to take responsibility for the role we play in energy consumption. Real-time energy usage gives energy consumers a sense of responsibility over what they can do to accomplish a much larger goal for the planet, and practically speaking, what they can do to lower the cost to their wallets. Synergy is an energy monitoring and visualization system that enables users to gather information about the energy consumption in a building – small or large – and display that data for the user in real-time. The gathered energy usage data …

Decompositional Method For Modelling And Studying Pulse-Width Automatic Control Systems Based On Dynamic Graphs, A.A. Kadirov, D.R. Kadirova, A.M. Nazarov Jun 2019

Decompositional Method For Modelling And Studying Pulse-Width Automatic Control Systems Based On Dynamic Graphs, A.A. Kadirov, D.R. Kadirova, A.M. Nazarov

Technical science and innovation

Systems with pulse-width modulation are essentially non-linear automatic control systems. The complexity factors of pulse-width systems include multivariable, the multirate nature of the pulse-width modulators work, and the nonstationarity of control objects. Such systems have been known for a long time and are now widely used. Various exact and approximate methods have been proposed for the analysis and synthesis of PWM systems. The field of the practical application of known methods is limited to single-variable systems because classical approaches provide for the consideration of the initial structures as a whole. Hence, the root cause of the fundamental difficulties arising in …

Effect Of Intermediate Connections On The Generator`S Static Stability, S.E. Shernazarov Jun 2019

Effect Of Intermediate Connections On The Generator`S Static Stability, S.E. Shernazarov

Technical science and innovation

This article provides the influence of the active, inductive capacitive load on the static stability of synchronous generators and compiled the angular characteristics of the generator power at various loads. When a resistive load is connected, an intermediate power extraction of Pr (δ) occurs. It can be defined as the difference Rg (δ) – Ph (δ) = Pr (δ), depending on the angle δ. The presence of this selection leads to an increase in the ultimate in static stability generator power. However, this reduces the possibility of transmitting power to the receiving system. Therefore, we can talk about the ambiguous …

Incorporating Antecedent Soil Moisture Into Streamflow Forecasting, Abdoul Oubeidillah, Glenn Tootle, Thomas Piechota Jun 2019

Incorporating Antecedent Soil Moisture Into Streamflow Forecasting, Abdoul Oubeidillah, Glenn Tootle, Thomas Piechota

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

This study incorporates antecedent (preceding) soil moisture into forecasting streamflow volumes within the North Platte River Basin, Colorado/Wyoming (USA). The incorporation of antecedent soil moisture accounts for infiltration and can improve streamflow predictions. Current Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) forecasting methods are replicated, and a comparison is drawn between current NRCS forecasts and proposed forecasting methods using antecedent soil moisture. Current predictors used by the NRCS in regression-based streamflow forecasting include precipitation, streamflow persistence (previous season streamflow volume) and snow water equivalent (SWE) from SNOTEL (snow telemetry) sites. Proposed methods utilize antecedent soil moisture as a predictor variable in addition …

Silica-Coated Metallic Nanoparticle-Based Hierarchical Super-Hydrophobic Surfaces Fabricated By Spin-Coating And Inverse Nanotransfer Printing, Shengjie Zhai, Hui Zhao Jun 2019

Silica-Coated Metallic Nanoparticle-Based Hierarchical Super-Hydrophobic Surfaces Fabricated By Spin-Coating And Inverse Nanotransfer Printing, Shengjie Zhai, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

By combining spin coating and inverse nanotransfer printing, silica-coated gold nanoparticles are patterned onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) superhydrophobic surfaces to form a hierarchical structure. A layer of nanoparticles is spin-coated on a flat silicon substrate serving as the stamp, which is then transferred to the raised regions of PDMS surfaces. Our inverse nanotransfer printing is in contrast to the standard nanotransfer printing, which transfers metal from the raised regions of a stamp to a flat PDMS surface. The fabricated hierarchical surface exhibits a higher contact angle and delays the Cassie-Wenzel transition during evaporation of a sessile droplet, indicating an improvement of …

Abstract

Packaging materials are typically made of multilayer structures combining polymers, metals and inorganic materials. Multilayer structures are selected in order to optimize the thickness and performance in packaging applications. Atomic layer deposited (ALD) aluminium oxide (Al2O3) layer provides good barrier properties against oxygen and carbon dioxide gases i.e. permeation of gases through ALD coated polymer films will reduce remarkably. The target was to study the effect of pinholes on the oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability of ALD coated extrusion-coated packaging paper. Pinholes were artificially generated by ultra violet (UV) laser drilling through the polymer layer …

Virtual Reality Physics Scenarios, Patric Zhang, Thomas King Jun 2019

Virtual Reality Physics Scenarios, Patric Zhang, Thomas King

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

Many students taking physics early on in their education find that it may be difficult to associate the theory they learn in class with how physics works in real world scenarios. Through various experiments in class, students are able to see examples of physics phenomena, but those experiments are limited by equipment, and do not offer precise data. To combat this, we are creating a virtual reality application for students to use to help learn physics. This report details the requirements the system will meet, as well as the use cases and subsequent activity diagrams for all users. We have …
