Approach For 4-D Trajectory Management Based On Hmm And Trajectory Similarity, Yi Lin, Bo Yang, Jianwei Zhang, Hong Liu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
To improve the accuracy and stability of flight trajectory prediction, a novel four-dimensional (4-D) trajectory management approach is proposed in this paper, which consists of the estimation and updating procedure. Historical flight trajectories are proved to be safe and feasible based on the real-time traffic situation, and serve as the data foundation of 4-D trajectory management in this paper. To achieve the goal of 4-D trajectory management, we firstly apply probabilistic statistical models and machine learning approach to predict the fly-over time and altitude of waypoints along the planning route before the flight takes off. Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are …

Despite the known value of a diverse Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce, women and minorities continue to be under-represented in these fields. Engineering undergraduate degrees, in particular, are awarded to women engineering students in the United States and Canada at a lower rate compared to their male counterparts. For the past 20 years, less than 20% of engineering degrees have been awarded to women students, and this stubborn trend is not changing much. The outcome is worse for black and Hispanic students, who usually comprise less than 10% of engineering graduates. Research has shown that low self-confidence in …

Analysis Of The System Response Of A Spray Passive Downdraft Evaporative Cooling System, Daeho Kang, Richard K. Strand
Publications and Research
A spray Passive Downdraft Evaporative Cooling (PDEC) system achieves great savings for space cooling and improves indoor environmental quality by supplying a large amount of fresh outdoor air. As previous studies heavily focused on the energy saving capability of a spray PDEC system due to lack of methods for a detailed analysis, the influence of cool humid supply air from a spray PDEC system in a space in buildings has not been comprehensively studied. This study is intended to evaluate the competence of a spray PDEC system as a primary cooling system in typical spaces in a primary school building …

Cybersecurity is an important concept in today’s age of information and is of major interest to keep information secure, helping to protect sensitive information in the presence of untrusted third-parties. This has presented the need for an implemented hardware variant of secure algorithms with small footprint to help add protection while reducing processing time/overhead on a standard processor.
In this work we present two hands-on projects that are designed specifically to teach these two concepts using project-based learning techniques in an innovative cooperative learning environment. The learning environment served to combine both student-peer learning and jigsaw strategies.
The technical contents …

Numerical And Experimental Prediction Of Hydrodynamic Interaction Effects Acting On Tugs During Ship Manoeuvres, Nirman Jayarathne, Dev Ranmuthugala, Zhi Leong, Jiangang Fei, Shuhong Chai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The role of tug boats is significant when assisting ships with limited manoeuvring capabilities. Hence, knowledge of the hydrodynamic interaction effects that act on a tug under these operations is of great practical value for the tug master in order to avoid damage, collision, or capsizing. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations are increasingly being adopted as a tool of analysis for determining the interaction effects in such vessel manoeuvres. However, one of the major challenges faced in CFD, is that the results can vary greatly depending on the numerical model settings. This paper investigates modelling techniques and the accuracy of …

The Effect Of Hydro-Meteorology On Ship Collision Avoidance In Heavy Traffic Areas With A Simplified Simulation Model, Ming-Chung Fang, Kun-Yuan Tsai, Chih-Chung Fang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
On the basis of the ship collision avoidance steering system in calm water developed by the authors, this paper upgrades the numerical simulation model by considering various hydrometeorological factors for ships with nonuniform movement. A real-time simulator was used for the numerical simulation of the container ship. To clarify the validity of the maneuvering mathematical model, sea trial results for the container ship were compared with the results for the present simulation system in terms of turn trajectory. In this study, a numerical technique based on Nomoto’s second-order model was employed to investigate the turning characteristics of a container ship. …

In this paper, the effect of post deposition annealing (PDA) on the chemical, structural, and electrical properties of the high-kY2O3 /Al2O3 stacking dielectric on p-type 4H-SiC were studied. High-k dielectric provides a physically thicker film with equivalent capacitance, therefore better exploits the high breakdown strength of 4H-SiC in its MOSFET devices. The Y2O3 /Al2O3 stacking films were deposited using RF magnetron sputtering, with PDA in Ar ambient at 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C and 1000 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results …

Substantial research over the past few decades has documented the challenges women experience both as students in engineering programs and as professionals in engineering workplaces. Few studies, however, have followed women from one context to the other to explore the ways in which school experiences, and particularly capstone experiences designed to facilitate this transition, do and do not prepare women for their work as practicing engineers. To address this gap, we draw on data from a larger multi-institution study to address the question, “How do women experience the transition from engineering school to engineering work?” Participants for this study are …

One of our observations in this lessons learned paper is that there is underwhelming faculty development related to scholarship other than on how to submit and sometimes how to write proposals. This de facto service model misses everything outside of the proposal-writing process; which is the least important, but is often the most celebrated, rewarded, and supported phase. Inspired by national Centers for Teaching & Learning, and modeled after the emerging Communities of Transformation literature, we are piloting a Center for Transformative Research at Boise State University. The vision of our Center is to build and sustain an ASSERTive community …

Crack Propagation And Microstructural Transformation On The Friction Surface Of A High-Speed Railway Brake Disc, Zhizhong Wang, Jianmin Han, Joseph P. Domblesky, Zhiqiang Li, Xinguang Fan, Xiaolong Liu
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
While brake disc wear represents a significant problem in high-speed rail systems, the progressive development of fatigue cracks during successive braking cycles also plays a great role in braking integrity. The modified microstructure consisting of a white etching layer (WEL) containing nanosized ferrite was observed on the friction surface of worn brake discs. In order to analyze how sequential thermal and mechanical stress affected crack propagation and microstructure evolution in brake discs, successive braking cycles were simulated on a full-scale braking bench test rig. Crack initiation and propagation mechanisms were proposed based on the experimental results, i.e., (i) occurrence of …

Identifying Nonlinear Oscillators By An Energetic Functional In The Linear Space Of Temporal Boundary Functions, Chein-Shan Liu, Yung-Wei Chen, Jiang-Ren Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
We resolve the inverse problems of a second-order nonlinear oscillator to recover time-dependent damping function and nonlinear restoring force, with the help of temporal boundary data measured at initial time and final time. By using these data, a sequence of temporal boundary functions of time is derived, which satisfy the measured temporal boundary conditions automatically, and are at least the fourth-order polynomials of time. All the temporal boundary functions and zero element constitute a linear space, and a new concept of energetic functional is introduced in the linear space, of which the energy is preserved for each energetic temporal boundary …

Optimum Arrangement Of Navy Ship Equipment For Radar Cross Section Reduction, Joon-Tae Hwang, Suk-Yoon Hong, Jee-Hun Song, Hyun-Wung Kwon
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Multiple reflections on navy ship equipment cause unexpectedly high radar cross-section (RCS) distributions based on the location of each equipment on the ship. No RCS reduction method has been considered to date because the directions of reradiated electromagnetic waves are difficult to predict. In this study, an equipment arrangement design system for navy ships was developed to minimize RCS to reduce the radar detection range of naval ships by the enemy. To minimize the possibility of operating range interferences among equipment, optimal equipment arrangement areas and operation ranges were determined with reference to real navy ships. Various arrangements were tested …

Minimizing Induced Drag With Weight Distribution, Lift Distribution, Wingspan, And Wing-Structure Weight, Warren F. Phillips, Douglas F. Hunsaker, Jeffrey D. Taylor
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
Because the wing-structure weight required to support the critical wing section bending moments is a function of wingspan, net weight, weight distribution, and lift distribution, there exists an optimum wingspan and wing-structure weight are presented for rectangular wings with four different sets of design constraints. These design constraints are fixed lift distribution and net weight combined with 1) fixed maximum stress and wing loading, 2) fixed maximum deflection and wing loading, 3) fixed maximum stress and stall speed and 4) fixed maximum deflection and stall speed. For each of these analytic solutions, the optimum wing-structure weight is found to depend …

Mechanical Engineering is a discipline highly dependent on designing and implementing mechanical, thermal, or energy systems for the improvement of the human environment. Thus being a proficient Engineer involves having a strong mathematical background and a thorough physical understanding on how systems operate in order to apply analytical or numerical schemes during a design process. However, most of the students’ academic development is centered on deriving tedious equations and solving textbook problems, which are difficult to visualize and physically understand, and cloud their intuitive nature to comprehend a problem on its entirety. These conventional approaches and methods of disseminating content …

Evaluation Of Traffic Speed Deflectometer For Pavement Structural Evaluation In Louisiana, Zia Uddin Ahmed Zihan
LSU Master's Theses
Many state agencies have recognized the importance of incorporating pavement structural conditions in the selection of maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) strategies along with functional indices. To measure in-service pavement structural capacity, surface deflection under a defined load has been typically used. The Rolling Wheel Deflectometer (RWD) and Traffic Speed Deflectometer (TSD) have emerged as continuous pavement deflection-measuring devices as they operate at traffic speed and reduces lane closure and user delays.
The research objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of using TSD measurements at the network-level for pavement conditions structural evaluation in Louisiana. To achieve the objectives …

Graph Information Processing For Artificial Intelligence, Limeng Pu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the last decade, techniques for artificial intelligence (AI) has advanced tremendously, which lead to solutions to many problems that have long-troubled us. Such examples include image/video recognition, speech recognition, and 3D scenario recognition. As the tool become more and more powerful, we started to explore data types that have never been handled in an AI fashion. Graph is undoubtedly the first one that comes to mind. Many important real-life data is or can be represented as graphs or networks: social networks, communication networks, protein-protein interaction networks, molecular structures, etc. Yet very little attention has been devoted to the study …

A Method For Generating Random Vibration Using Acceleration Kurtosis And Velocity Kurtosis, Daichi Nakai, Katsuhiko Saito
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
Random vibration tests for packaging are conducted to confirm safety during shipping by truck. However, there is a difference between the traditional random vibration tests and the real vibrations on the truck bed. One reason for this difference is the shock caused by road roughness. Hence, many studies have been conducted to improve random vibration testing. In these studies, the root mean square, power spectral density, kurtosis, and probability density of acceleration are considered. In this study, we show that the kurtosis and probability density of velocity are also important factors for such tests and propose a new method for …

Travelers often lose interest and joy when traveling in tourist-packed areas around the world. As more restaurants and attractions open up in popular cities, the wait and travel time from one location to another inevitably increases. Each attraction has certain hours throughout the day where visitors surge and the wait times increase. In addition, traffic and travel time is an important factor to consider when looking to optimize ones trip. However, with large amounts of attractions, it is difficult to calculate and consider the most optimal routes and times an individual should use to visit each possible attraction. Travelers ultimately …
Scale Optimization Of Milkguard Biosensor For Detecting E. Coli In Human Breast Milk, Jerard Roniel Del Rosario Madamba
Scale Optimization Of Milkguard Biosensor For Detecting E. Coli In Human Breast Milk, Jerard Roniel Del Rosario Madamba
Bioengineering Master's Theses
Milkguard is an alginate-based biosensor developed to detect E. coli in human breast milk via the metabolism of X-gal (5-Bromo-4-Chloro-3-Indolyl β-D-Galactopyranoside) by β-galactosidase. In order to deconvolute metabolic reproducibility from scaling laws, the commercial enzyme β-galactosidase was used to mimic the biological function of the bacterial lac operon. Downscaling was explored as an optimization of the biosensor design based on numerical solutions to Fickian-based diffusion models. The characterization of large capsules (d ≅ 3 mm) and atomized microcapsules (d ≅ 300 ± 60 μm) yielded size-specific Michaelis-Menten constants. Small capsules (Km = 3.6 x 10-4 M; Vmax ’’ …

Having a reliable address system is something that is often taken for granted, but simply having one comes with immense benefits. People can easily find locations of friends and family, services like taxis know exactly where to pick customers up, and emergency response units can accurately find the scene of emergencies quickly. However, in many developing countries, these are luxuries only afforded by the wealthy and privileged neighborhoods. Locations are given haphazardly through description, often leading to late arrivals. In some cases this can be a dire possibility. Our solution aims to change this by developing a mobile application that …

Characterizing Tilt Effects On Wind Plants, Ryan Scott
Dissertations and Theses
Tilting the nacelle of a wind turbine modifies entrainment into the wind plant and impacts total efficiency. Extreme angles can produce flying and crashing wakes where the wake either disrupts entertainment from the undisturbed flow above or is decimated on the ground. The effect of tilt angle on downstream wake behavior was investigated in a series of wind tunnel experiments. Scale model turbines with a hub height and diameter of 12 cm were arranged in a Cartesian array comprised of four rows of three turbines each. Nacelle tilt was varied in the third row from -15° to 15° in chosen …

States facing the decision to develop a nuclear weapons program do so within a broader context of their relationships with other countries. How these diplomatic, economic, and strategic relationships impact proliferation decisions, however, remains under-specified. Adding to the existing empirical literature that attempts to model state proliferation decisions, this article introduces the first quantitative heterogeneous network analysis of how networks of conflict, alliances, trade, and nuclear cooperation interact to spur or deter nuclear proliferation. Using a multiplex network model, we conceptualize states as nodes linked by different modes of interaction represented on individual network layers. Node strength is used to …

This paper presents a detailed comparison between the linear panel solver PANAIR A502 and the in-house Navier–Stokes solver UNS3D for a supersonic low-boom geometry. The high-fidelity flow solver was used to predict both the inviscid and laminar flow about the aircraft geometry. The JAXA wing body was selected as the supersonic low-boom geometry for this study. A comparison of the undertrack near-field pressure signatures showed good agreement between the three levels of model fidelity along the first 0.8L of the signature. Large oscillations in the PANAIR results were observed. The PANAIR discrepancies were traced back to violations of the …

Recently, the railway pavement structure system, as an integral part of the transport infrastructure, has been under fast development in some countries such as China, Turkey, and some European Union countries, particularly for the use of high-speed trains. In designing and constructing the railway pavement structure, it is necessary to take into account the infrastructure demand of the High-Speed Railway Lines (HSRL). Compared to traditional railway trains, HSRL can cause more significant problems to the ballast or base layer of commonly used ballasted railway pavements. The deteriorated ballast or base layer may further result in substructure degradation that may cause …
