Dual-Modality Smartphone-Based Fiber-Optic Microendoscope System For Early Detection Of Cervical Neoplasia, Xiangqian Hong

Dissertations (1934 -)

Cervical cancer remains the leading cause of death for women in low middle-income countries (LMICs), where the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer are disproportionately high. Due to the poor medical conditions and lack of resources, the benefits of early screening methods such Pap smear and HPV test have yet to be realized in these areas. The more viable screening option - visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) is relatively easier to implement and lower in cost. However, the effectiveness of VIA on the early detection of cervical cancer is still in question because of its low specificity, which may …

Construction Labor Productivity Benchmarking: A Comparison Between On-Site Construction And Prefabrication, Emad Nadi Jul 2019

Construction Labor Productivity Benchmarking: A Comparison Between On-Site Construction And Prefabrication, Emad Nadi

Dissertations (1934 -)

Construction labor productivity has been declining over the past sixty years, which has caused a decline in overall construction productivity. The traditional ways of managing construction projects and their delivery have evolved into an inherently inefficient and adversarial process. There was always a need to improve the way construction elements are constructed and delivered to the job site such as adopting lean construction. One way to achieve this goal is to prefabricate the construction elements off site and then deliver them to the site for installation. Prefabrication is a process of assembling building components in a remote location using a …

Supplemental Vibrotactile Feedback Of Real-Time Limb Position Enhances Precision Of Goal-Directed Reaching, Nicoletta Risi, Valay Shah, Leigh A. Mrotek, Maura Casadio, Robert A. Scheidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We examined vibrotactile stimulation as a form of supplemental limb state feedback to enhance planning and ongoing control of goal-directed movements. Subjects wore a two-dimensional vibrotactile display on their nondominant arm while performing horizontal planar reaching with the dominant arm. The vibrotactile display provided feedback of hand position such that small hand displacements were more easily discriminable using vibrotactile feedback than with intrinsic proprioceptive feedback. When subjects relied solely on proprioception to capture visuospatial targets, performance was degraded by proprioceptive drift and an expansion of task space. By contrast, reach accuracy was enhanced immediately when subjects were provided vibrotactile feedback …

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Connections are critical parts of timber structures, transmitting static and dynamic forces between structural elements. The ultimate behaviour of a building depends strongly on the structural configuration and the capacity of its connections. The complete collapse of a building or other less extensive accidents that may occur usually start as a local failure inside or in the vicinity of a joint. The main aim of this study has been to investigate if the short-term capacity of steel-wood dowel joints loaded parallel to the grain is affected by variations in moisture content associated with post fabrication drying or wetting of the …

Nonlinear Direct Torque Control Of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drive, Jackson Justo Jun 2019

Nonlinear Direct Torque Control Of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drive, Jackson Justo

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

This paper presents a nonlinear direct torque control (NDTC) strategy of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) for electric vehicle (EV) propulsion. The proposed NDTC scheme applies a nonlinear model of IPMSM to dynamically determine the optimal switching states that optimize the EV drivers’ decision to reduce the workload. Moreover, the proposed NDTC method has a simple control structure and can explicitly handle system constraints and nonlinearities. The performance evaluation is conducted via a prototype IPMSM test-bed with a TMS320F28335 DSP. Comparative experimental results provide the evidence of improvements of the proposed NDTC strategy over the conventional DTC strategy by …

A Simple And Effective Way To Overcome Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Of Platinum Surfaces In Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Yaser M. Asal Mr., Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr, Sohair A. Darwish Ms Jun 2019

A Simple And Effective Way To Overcome Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Of Platinum Surfaces In Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Yaser M. Asal Mr., Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr, Sohair A. Darwish Ms

Chemical Engineering

A glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs), Pt/MWCNTs-GC, has been introduced for formic acid electro-oxidation (FAO). A similar loading of PtNPs has been conserved for a proper comparison between the Pt/MWCNTs-GC and the unmodified Pt/GC electrodes. The modification with MWCNTs could enhance the loading of PtNPs onto the GC electrode in a way that minimizes its agglomeration and increases its dispersion in the CNTs network. This not only increases the surface area exposed to the reaction but also interrupts the contiguity of the Pt active sites minimizing the adsorption of the poisoning …

A Promising Modification Of Pt Surfaces With Cnts For Decreasing Poisoning Impact In Direct Methanol Fuel Cells, Yaser M. Asal Mr., Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr, Aya A. Khalifa Ms.

Chemical Engineering

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are clean energy sources that have many applications due to the high energy density of methanol as a fuel. However, this type of fuel cells (FCs) has limitations that are preventing it from being commercialized. One such limitation is the adsorption of intermediates such as CO into the surface of the Platinum (Pt) catalyst during methanol oxidation (MO) which deactivates its active sites, where the reaction is taking place, and leads to poisoning of the electrode over the long term. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been introduced to the Pt-modified glassy carbon …

A Ph-Sensitive Delivery System For The Prevention Of Dental Caries Using Salivary Protein, Yi Zhu, Yizhi Xiao, Elizabeth Gillies, Walter L. Siqueira

Western Research Forum

Dental caries remains one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide. In previous studies, salivary proteins (e.g. histatin 3, statherin) have demonstrated biological functions including the inhibition of crystal growth, antibacterial activities, which are directly related to tooth homeostasis and prevention of dental caries. However, proteins are susceptible to the high proteolytic activities in the oral environment. Therefore, pH-sensitive chitosan nanoparticles (CNs) have been proposed as potential carriers to protect proteins against enzymatic degradation at physiological salivary pH, in addition to swell selectively at lower pH conditions to facilitate the release of the encapsulated proteins, as major oral complications occur …
