Towards Lakosian Multilingual Software Design Principles, Damian Lyons, Saba Zahra, Thomas Marshall
Faculty Publications
Large software systems often comprise programs written in different programming languages. In the case when cross-language interoperability is accomplished with a Foreign Function Interface (FFI), for example pybind11, Boost.Python, Emscripten, PyV8, or JNI, among many others, common software engineering tools, such as call-graph analysis, are obstructed by the opacity of the FFI. This complicates debugging and fosters potential inefficiency and security problems. One contributing issue is that there is little rigorous software design advice for multilingual software. In this paper, we present our progress towards a more rigorous design approach to multilingual software. The approach is based on the existing …

Reduction Of Order: Analytical Solution Of Film Formation In The Electrostatic Rotary Bell Sprayer, Mark Doerre, Nelson Akafuah
Reduction Of Order: Analytical Solution Of Film Formation In The Electrostatic Rotary Bell Sprayer, Mark Doerre, Nelson Akafuah
Institute of Research for Technology Development Faculty Publications
This brief paper explains the slight differences in governing equations for a fluid film in a spinning cone, and the mechanism that reduces the order of a solution. Spinning cones with a centrally supplied fluid that spreads over its inner surface as a thin film have been the subject of interest for many years. Though often cast as a mathematical analysis, understanding this process is important, especially in the application of automotive painting. The analysis consists of a system of equations obtained from the Navier–Stokes equations along with simple boundary conditions that describe radial and tangential momentum conservation. Solutions to …

In order to fulfill the tremendous resource demand by diverse IoT applications, the large-scale resource-constrained IoT ecosystem requires a robust resource management technique. An optimum resource provisioning in IoT ecosystem deals with an efficient request-resource mapping which is difficult to achieve due to the heterogeneity and dynamicity of IoT resources and IoT requests. In this paper, we investigate the scheduling and resource allocation problem for dynamic user requests with varying resource requirements. Specifically, we formulate the complete problem as an optimization problem and try to generate an optimal policy with the objectives to minimize the overall energy consumption and to …

The Blue Emission At 2.8 Ev In Strontium Titanate: Evidence For A Radiative Transition Of Self-Trapped Excitons From Unbound States, Miguel L. Crespillo, Joseph T. Graham, Fernando Agullo-Lopez, Y. Zhang, William J. Weber
Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The origin of the blue emission in SrTiO3 has been investigated as a function of irradiation fluence, electronic excitation density, and temperature using a range of ion energies and masses. The emission clearly does not show correlation with the concentration of vacancies generated by irradiation but is greatly enhanced under heavy-ion irradiation. The intensity ratio of the 2.8 and 2.5 eV bands is independent of fluence at all temperatures, but it increases with excitation rate. The 2.8 eV emission is proposed to correspond to a transition from conduction band states to the ground state level of the self-trapped exciton …

Notes On The Economics Of Residential Hybrid Energy System, Mahelet G. Fikru, Gregory M. Gelles, Ana M. Ichim, Joseph D. Smith
Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Despite advances in small-scale hybrid renewable energy technologies, there are limited economic frameworks that model the different decisions made by a residential hybrid system owner. We present a comprehensive review of studies that examine the techno-economic feasibility of small-scale hybrid energy systems, and we find that the most common approach is to compare the annualized life-time costs to the expected energy output and choose the system with the lowest cost per output. While practical, this type of benefit—cost analysis misses out on other production and consumption decisions that are simultaneously made when adopting a hybrid energy system. In this paper, …

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Rhodopseudomonas palustris CGA009 is a purple non-sulfur bacterium (PNSB) that can fix CO2 and nitrogen or break down organic compounds for its carbon and nitrogen requirements. Light, inorganic, and organic compounds can all be used for its source of energy. Excess electrons produced during its metabolic processes can be exploited to produce hydrogen gas or biodegradable polyesters (polyhydroxybutyrate). A genome-scale metabolic model of the bacterium was reconstructed to study the interactions between photosynthesis, carbon dioxide fixation, and the redox state of the quinone pool. A comparison of model-predicted flux values with published in vivo MFA fluxes resulted in predicted …

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) refers to a networked environment of computing devices for implementing a "smart" system. AmI is built using sensors and actuators connected through real-time networks. The data and signals captured from sensors are ambiguous for both human and machine. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is merged into an ambient environment to translate data and signals into a language understandable by human users and can help transform an operational setting from machine-centered to human-centered. However, the implementation of AI technology into an ambient environment requires quantitative modeling approaches to emphasize system requirements analysis and more detailed design specifications. This article tries …

Wide-bandgap optoelectronic devices have undergone significant advancements with the advent of commercial light-emitting diodes and edge-emitting lasers in the violet-blue spectral region. They are now ubiquitous in several lighting, communication, data storage, display, and sensing applications. Among the III-nitride emitters, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) have attracted significant attention in recent years due to their inherent advantages over edge-emitting lasers. The small active volume enables single-mode operation with low threshold currents and high modulation bandwidths. Their surface-normal device geometry is conducive to the cost-effective formation of high-density 2D arrays while simplifying on-chip wafer testing. Furthermore, the low beam divergence and circular …

Development Of A Simplified Performance-Based Procedure For Assessment Of Post-Liquefaction Settlement Using The Cone Penetration Test, Jingwen He
Theses and Dissertations
Earthquake-induced liquefaction can cause severe damage to infrastructure is a serious concern in civil engineering practice. Post-liquefaction settlement is one of the common effects of liquefaction. The ability to predict and quantify post-liquefaction free-field settlement is a crucial part of seismic design. Many approaches have been developed during the past 50 years to perform liquefaction hazard analysis. The performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) framework developed by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) center is a probabilistic framework that can provide a more accurate and complete seismic hazard analysis than other traditional methods. However, the PBEE framework is not widely used in …

Evaluating Volumetric Strain As A Predictor Of Yield And Peak Strength For The Multistage Triaxial Test: A Case Study With Utah Coal Specimens, Emmanuel Orilogi
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Failure envelopes used to characterize the shear strength of geological materials are generally obtained through conventional triaxial testing of multiple specimens and most of the specimens are heterogonous and expensive to obtain. Therefore, the multistage triaxial test was introduced to make use of a single specimen for material strength characterization, compared to the conventional triaxial test that requires at least three specimens. In the multistage triaxial test, the challenge to obtaining meaningful data is identifying when to terminate each loading stage. The goal is to be as close to the peak strength of the material but below the stress threshold …

Investigation Of The Toppling Of Rectangular Rigid Blocks Using A Shake Table And Distinct Element Models, Sara Magallon
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Understanding the engineering principles of failure modes in rock formations from seismic activity continues to be a challenging problem for engineers and geologists. The complexity of the geology, geometry, discontinuities, and earthquake ground motions contribute to the difficulty in estimating the stability of rock slopes. In this study, one classic rock slope failure mode is examined: the toppling behavior of a single rigid rectangular block under dynamic loading. An investigation employing experimental and numerical modeling techniques was performed to observe the response of wooden blocks with different aspect (width/height) ratios subjected to loading at the base and compared to established …
