Low-Cost Open Source Ultrasound-Sensing Based Navigational Support For The Visually Impaired, Aliaksei Petsiuk, Joshua M. Pearce

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Nineteen million Americans have significant vision loss. Over 70% of these are not employed full-time, and more than a quarter live below the poverty line. Globally, there are 36 million blind people, but less than half use white canes or more costly commercial sensory substitutions. The quality of life for visually impaired people is hampered by the resultant lack of independence. To help alleviate these challenges this study reports on the development of a low-cost, open-source ultrasound-based navigational support system in the form of a wearable bracelet to allow people with the lost vision to navigate, orient themselves in their …

Enzymatic Biofuel Cells In A Sandwich Geometry With Compressed Carbon Nanotubes/Enzyme Electrodes & Hybrid Patch Applications, Biao Leng Aug 2019

Enzymatic Biofuel Cells In A Sandwich Geometry With Compressed Carbon Nanotubes/Enzyme Electrodes & Hybrid Patch Applications, Biao Leng

Dissertations

Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) convert the chemical energy of biofuels, such as glucose and methanol, into electrical energy by employing enzymes as catalysts. In contrast to conventional fuel cells, EBFCs have a simple membrane-free fuel cell design due to the high catalytic specificity of the enzymes, but the power densities obtained are lower. Although the primary goal of research on EBFCs has been to develop a sustainable power source that can be directly implanted in the human body to power bio-devices, other applications such as the use of a flexible film or fuel cell patch as a wearable power source …

Measurement Of Stresses And Their Effect On Transport In Thin Film Battery Electrodes, Subhajit Rakshit

Dissertations

At the moment, there is a significant push towards environmentally friendly energy production and gasoline-free transportation technologies. As a result, there is a renewed interest in energy storage devices such as lithium-ion batteries which will play a key role in providing energy storage capability for these applications. However, the current battery technology is reaching its limits and may not meet future energy storage demands. The increased demand and the limited lithium reserves in geographically remote areas of the earth will lead to higher cost of Li. The alternative battery technologies, such as sodium-ion batteries, are promising due to their low …

Toward Realistic Nonstationarity Of Semidiurnal Baroclinic Tides In A Hydrodynamicmodel, Arin D. Nelson, Brian K. Arbic, Edward Zaron, Anna Savage, James G. Richman, Maarten C. Buijsman, Jay F. Shriver Aug 2019

Toward Realistic Nonstationarity Of Semidiurnal Baroclinic Tides In A Hydrodynamicmodel, Arin D. Nelson, Brian K. Arbic, Edward Zaron, Anna Savage, James G. Richman, Maarten C. Buijsman, Jay F. Shriver

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Semidiurnal baroclinic tide sea surface height (SSH) variance and semidiurnal nonstationary variance fraction (SNVF) are compared between a hydrodynamic model and altimetry for the low- to middle-latitude global ocean. Tidal frequencies are aliased by ∼10-day altimeter sampling, which makes it impossible to unambiguously identify nonstationary tidal signals from the observations. In order to better understand altimeter sampling artifacts, the model was analyzed using its native hourly outputs and by subsampling it in the same manner as altimeters. Different estimates of the semidiurnal nonstationary and total SSH variance are obtained with the model depending on whether they are identified in the …

Targeted Germanium Ion Irradiation Of Aluminum Gallium Nitride/Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistors, Melanie E. Mace

Theses and Dissertations

Microscale beams of germanium ions were used to target different locations of aluminum galliumnitride/gallium nitride (AlGaN/GaN) high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) to determine location dependent radiation effects. 1.7 MeV Ge ions were targeted at the gap between the gate and the drain to observe displacement damage effects while 47 MeV Ge ions were targeted at the gate to observe ionization damage effects. Electrical data was taken pre, during, and post irradiation. To separate transient from permanent degradation, the devices were characterized after a room temperature anneal for at least 30 days. Optical images were also analyzed pre and post irradiation. …

On The Pulsed Laser Ablation Of Metals And Semiconductors, Todd A. Van Woerkom Aug 2019

On The Pulsed Laser Ablation Of Metals And Semiconductors, Todd A. Van Woerkom

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation covers pulsed laser ablation of Al, Si, Ti, Ge, and InSb, with pulse durations from tens of picosecond to hundreds of microseconds, fluences from ones of J/cm2 to over 10,000 J/cm2, and in ambient air and vacuum. A set of non-dimensional scaling factors was created to interpret the data relative to the laser and material parameters, and it was found that pulse durations shorter than a critical timescale formed craters much larger than the thermal diffusion length, and longer pulse durations created holes much shallower than the thermal diffusion length. Low transverse order Gaussian beams …

Aerodynamic Centers Of Arbitrary Airfoils Below Stall, Douglas F. Hunsaker, Orrin D. Pope, Jeffrey D. Taylor, Josh Hodson Aug 2019

Aerodynamic Centers Of Arbitrary Airfoils Below Stall, Douglas F. Hunsaker, Orrin D. Pope, Jeffrey D. Taylor, Josh Hodson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

The aerodynamic center of an airfoil is commonly estimated to lie at the quarter-chord. This traditional estimate is based on thin airfoil theory, which neglects aerodynamic and geometric nonlinearities. Even below stall, these nonlinearities can have a significant effect on the location of the aerodynamic center. Here, a method is presented for accurately predicting the aerodynamic center of any airfoil from known lift, drag, and pitching-moment data as a function of angle of attack. The method accounts for aerodynamic and geometric nonlinearities, and it does not include small-angle, small-camber, and thin-airfoil approximations. It is shown that the aerodynamic center of …

Exercise-Induced Alterations In Sympathetic-Somatomotor Coupling In Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury, Tanya Onushko, Gordhan B. Mahtani, Gabrielle Brazg, T. George Hornby, Brian D. Schmit Aug 2019

Exercise-Induced Alterations In Sympathetic-Somatomotor Coupling In Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury, Tanya Onushko, Gordhan B. Mahtani, Gabrielle Brazg, T. George Hornby, Brian D. Schmit

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The aim of this study was to understand how high- and low-intensity locomotor training (LT) affects sympathetic-somatomotor (SS) coupling in people with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Proper coupling between sympathetic and somatomotor systems allows controlled regulation of cardiovascular responses to exercise. In people with SCI, altered connectivity between descending pathways and spinal segments impairs sympathetic and somatomotor coordination, which may have deleterious effects during exercise and limit rehabilitation outcomes. We postulated that high-intensity LT, which repeatedly engages SS systems, would alter SS coupling. Thirteen individuals (50 ± 7.2 years) with motor incomplete spinal cord injuries (American Spinal Injury Association …

Initial Development Of A Prototype Sensor Testbed For Fetal Monitoring, Christian Beauvais Aug 2019

Initial Development Of A Prototype Sensor Testbed For Fetal Monitoring, Christian Beauvais

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to design and manufacture a device that exhibits some of the bio-physiological signals relevant to fetal health monitoring. Currently, limited options exist for testing the performance of monitoring devices such as the tocodynamometer (TOCO) and electrocardiograph (ECG) that measure the bio-physiological signals of a woman and her fetus. Sensor designers need ways of generating and acquiring signals that do not carry the ethical burden of human testing. The development of such a device, as considered in this work, may involve using muscle wire or an inflatable tube as prospective foundations for simulating uterine contraction. …

An Optimal Design Of A Moving Target Defense For Attack Detection In Control Systems, Paul Griffioen, Sean Weerakkody, Bruno Sinopoli

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

In this paper, we consider the problem of designing system parameters to improve detection of attacks in control systems. Specifically, we study control systems which are vulnerable to integrity attacks on sensors and actuators. We aim to defend against strong model aware adversaries that can read and modify all sensors and actuators. Previous work has proposed a moving target defense for detecting integrity attacks on control systems. Here, an authenticating subsystem with time-varying dynamics coupled to the original plant is introduced. Due to this coupling, an attack on the original system will affect the authenticating subsystem and in turn be …

Single-Layer Oxygen Deficiency Δ-Mno2 For Electrochemical Co2 Reduction, Yue-Feng Zhang, Jian-Jun Liu, Zeng-Xi Wei, Xin-Xin Tian, Jian-Min Ma

Journal of Electrochemistry

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) has been widely used in catalysis. In addition, since the defect engineering can change the electronic properties of the catalyst, here we have systematically studied electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) on δ-MnO2 with and without oxygen deficiency, denoted as Ov-MnO2 and MnO2, respectively. We calculate the electronic properties and the intermediate of free energy for MnO2 and Ov-MnO2 with the help of spin-polarized density functional theory. By analyzing this result, we can find that the introduction of defects change the δ-MnO2 from semiconducting properties to …

Journal of Electrochemistry

Graphene nanosheets (GS) and carbon nanotubes have been considered as good catalysts candidates for applications in energy conversion and storage. However, hybrids of GS and carbon nanotubes are always formed in transition metal-based nitrogen-doped system, making the system quite complex for exploring the structure-activity relationship. To prepare the catalysts with desired species controllably, we try to adjust the outcomes with the effect of nitrogen on the growth of carbon nanotubes. In this work, a series of Fe-N co-doped carbon hybrid catalysts containing N-doped GS or hybrids of GS/bamboo carbon nanotubes (BCNTs) or BCNTs were obtained with one-step pyrolyzed method. To …

Reduction Of A Detailed Soot Model For Simulations Of Pyrolysing Solid Fuels, Alexander J. Josephson, Emily M. Hopkins, David O. Lignell, Rod R. Linn

Faculty Publications

This work presents a computationally inexpensive soot formation model for use in simulating large solid-complex fuel systems. The proposed model evaluates three variables: number density of tars, bulk mass density of soot particles, and particle number density. Each of these variables are influenced by soot formation phenomena, and this model evaluates the most common of these phenomena: soot nucleation, surface reactions, and coagulation. Two separate simulations were carried out using this model and results were compared against simulations using a more detailed and computationally expensive model. Results are promising and show a meaningful reduction in model complexity and computational cost …

Molybdenum (Mo) is the most commonly used back-contact material for copper zinc tin selenide (CZTSe)-based thin-film solar cells. For most fabrication methods, an interfacial molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) layer with an uncontrolled thickness is formed, ranging from a few tens of nm up to ≈1 μm. In order to improve the control of the back-contact interface in CZTSe solar cells, the formation of a MoSe2 layer with a homogeneous and defined thickness is necessary. In this study, we use plasma treatments on the as-grown Mo surface prior to the CZTSe absorber formation, which consists of the deposition of stacked metallic layers …

Methods For Estimating Supersaturation In Antisolvent Crystallization Systems, Jennifer M. Schall, Gerard Capellades, Allan S. Myerson

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

The mole fraction and activity coefficient-dependent (MFAD) supersaturation expression is the least-assumptive, practical choice for calculating supersaturation in solvent mixtures. This paper reviews the basic thermodynamic derivation of the supersaturation expression, revisits common simplifying assumptions, and discusses the shortcomings of those assumptions for the design of industrial crystallization processes. A step-by-step methodology for estimating the activity-dependent supersaturation is provided with focus on ternary systems. This method requires only solubility data and thermal property data from a single differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiment. Two case studies are presented, where common simplifications to the MFAD supersaturation expression are evaluated: (1) for various …
