Structural Investigations For The Refurbishment Project Of The Municipal Building Of Gjakova, Bledian Nela, Francesko Ruci Mail
UBT International Conference
This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the structural investigations performed on the existing municipal building of Gjakova, intended to be refurbished as part of the Refurbishment project by the European Commission. The municipal building of Gjakova built in the end of 1960s is a reinforced concrete structure with bearing masonry walls which are scattered without any logical pattern. This structural system poses a great challange for the seismic assessment of this building. In order to obtain the confidence factors and the mechanical parameters for the appropriate numerical modeling, a series of structural investigations is carried out in detail. Initially …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Insufficient internet access is holding back local economies, reducing educational outcomes, and creating health disparities in rural areas of the U.S. At present, federal and state funding is available for rural broadband infrastructure deployment, but existing efforts have not invested in analytical work to maximize efficiency and minimize cost. In this study, we use a state-of-the-art matrix (SAM) to identify key challenges and opportunities facing rural broadband infrastructure from previous research and government reports. We focus on six themes: (1) technology, (2) hardware costs, (3) financing, (4) adoption, (5) regulatory/legal, and (6) management. We highlight key issues to be addressed …

Flood Management Deep Learning Model Inputs: A Review Of Necessary Data And Predictive Tools, Jacob Hale, Suzanna Long, Steven Corns, Tom Shoberg
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Current flood management models are often hampered by the lack of robust predictive analytics, as well as incomplete datasets for river basins prone to heavy flooding. This research uses a State-of-the-Art matrix (SAM) analysis and integrative literature review to categorize existing models by method and scope, then determines opportunities for integrating deep learning techniques to expand predictive capability. Trends in the SAM analysis are then used to determine geospatial characteristics of the region that can contribute to flash flood scenarios, as well as develop inputs for future modeling efforts. Preliminary progress on the selection of one urban and one rural …

P-12 Potential Compact Fiberboard From Combining Shredded Corrugated Cardboard And Pet Water Bottles, Joshua Lim Khye Shuen
Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship
Corrugated cardboard and plastic bottles (PET) can each be recycled; however the current research is looking at recycling both cardboard and PET into a new combined material. The current method of recycling corrugated cardboard is to shred and recombine the material to make new cardboard. According to the Container Recycling Institute (http://www.container-recycling.org/), only 7.5% of PET manufactured in the US and Canada are recycled. The sheer amount of corrugated cardboard and PET bottles can be recycled for other practical uses. Corrugated cardboard and PET bottles, when shredded and placed into a 3x3x6 inch mold, can be combined together and baked …

Do After-School Robotics Programs Expand The Pipeline Into Stem Majors In College?, Cathy Burack, Alan Melchior, Matthew Hoover
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
One result of the growing concerns over the numbers of young people moving into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-related careers has been the expansion of formal and informal STEM education programming for pre-college youth, from elementary school through high school. This paper presents interim findings from a multi-year longitudinal study of three national after-school robotics programs that engage students in designing, building, and competing complex robots with the goal of inspiring long-term interest in STEM. Focusing on …

Secrets are not welcome in Idalis Villanueva’s engineering classroom. She doesn’t believe in withholding information or making assumptions about what students may or may not know. On day one, she asks students to refer to her as Dr. Villanueva or Dr. V; she clearly posts assignment due dates; she lists the objectives of each lesson; and she clarifies uncommon terms to make sure everyone is on the same page. This seemingly basic approach to instruction is nothing new, but emerging research suggests it is crucial to the success of would-be engineers.

Then, the stress distribution of surrounding rock and the radius of plastic zone calculated by SMP criterion are compared with those calculated by Mohr-Coulomb(M-C) criterion, and the influencing factors such as pore water pressure and dilatancy angle of surrounding rock are analyzed. It is shown …
