Understanding And Utilizing Basic Codes, Rodney Johnson Nov 2019

Understanding And Utilizing Basic Codes, Rodney Johnson

Building Academy Conference

This presentation is designed for inspectors and design professionals, to have a basic understanding of how the various codes work together to accomplish a well designed and a safe building for the end user when completed and ready for occupancy. One code doesn’t fit all parts of the big picture of the design and inspection of the building during construction and at the final completion of the building prior to occupancy and one code does not address the future uses and maintenance of the structure without the assistance of the entire family of codes to support and complement one another.

Agricultural Rental Hall Wedding And Event Venues Party Barns, Sallie D. Fahey, Mike Wolf, Pat Grimes

Building Academy Conference

Rural event and wedding venues are all the rage, but many simply begin operation without proper code and zoning compliance. Rural property owners seldom understand that their old barn or new pole building was not built to Class 1 structure standards to allow public access, but when enforcement is initiated tearful brides and angry event planners blame local government. Other non-approved event venue owners are knowingly exceeding the limits and pushing enforcement of codes and public nuisance laws.

This work proposes a machine current sensor fault detection and isolation (FDI) strategy in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) resilient to multiple faults. The fault detection is performed by comparing the measured and estimated DC link currents. The fault isolation is achieved according to machine phase signal estimation and the corresponding residual examination. Single sensor fault, multiple sensor faults and non-sensor fault are covered by the proposed FDI method. The proposed sensor FDI method is not influenced by machine imbalance, feasible for FDI of both single and multiple machine current sensor faults, and capable of distinguishing between machine current sensor …

Shortest Path Calculation Using Contraction Hierarchy Graph Algorithms On Nvidia Gpus, Roozbeh Karimi Nov 2019

Shortest Path Calculation Using Contraction Hierarchy Graph Algorithms On Nvidia Gpus, Roozbeh Karimi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

PHAST is to date one of the fastest algorithms for performing single source shortest path (SSSP) queries on road-network graphs. PHAST operates on graphs produced in part using Geisberger's contraction hierarchy (CH) algorithm. Producing these graphs is time consuming, limiting PHAST's usefulness when graphs are not available in advance. CH iteratively assigns scores to nodes, contracts (removes) the highest-scoring node, and adds shortcut edges to preserve distances. Iteration stops when only one node remains. Scoring and contraction rely on a witness path search (WPS) of nearby nodes. Little work has been reported on parallel and especially GPU CH algorithms. This …

Publications and Research

The study compares the sensitivities of open-circuit airgap flux (OCAF) between a surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) machine and a spoke-type PM machine based on variations in airgap length including additional airgaps between permanent magnets and rotor core and between segmented stator cores to achieve high quality electric machines. Analytical equations deduced from magnetic equivalent circuits (MECs) are used to directly compare natural-born characteristics of the OCAF of the two machines. First, the MEC of each machine is modeled by considering two additional airgaps between the PMs and rotor core and between the segmented stator cores. Second, the OCAF equation of …

Cactus-Based Mucilage As A Natural Dispersant For Crude Oil Spills, Fei Guo Nov 2019

Cactus-Based Mucilage As A Natural Dispersant For Crude Oil Spills, Fei Guo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Oil spills are a critical threat to the marine environment, and the spilled oil as a source of pollution can have long-term adverse effects on the marine ecosystem. Traditional mechanical clean-up operations have apparent advantages for dealing with small and medium-scale oil spills. For large-scale oil spills, dispersants are a practical and minimally influential approach to the environment. As the dispersant components are iteratively updated, dispersants become more efficient and safer. However, the toxicity of the dispersants remains a significant impediment to their application. An efficient and non-toxic dispersant is increasingly becoming a requirement.

The cactus mucilage extracts studied in …
