Adaptive Encryption Techniques In Wireless Communication Channels With Tradeoffs Between Communication Reliability And Security, Walid Al Zibideh Jan 2013

Adaptive Encryption Techniques In Wireless Communication Channels With Tradeoffs Between Communication Reliability And Security, Walid Al Zibideh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Encryption is a vital process to ensure the confidentiality of the information transmitted over an insecure wireless channel. However, the nature of the wireless channel tends to deteriorate because of noise, interference and fading. Therefore, a symmetrically encrypted transmitted signal will be received with some amount of error. Consequently, due to the strict avalanche criterion (sac), this error propagates during the decryption process, resulting in half the bits (on average) after decryption to be in error. In order to alleviate this amount of error, smart coding techniques and/or new encryption algorithms that take into account the nature of wireless channels …

Fe Modeling In Support Of Vibration Based Damage Detection In Bridges, James Kyle Bethay Jan 2013

Fe Modeling In Support Of Vibration Based Damage Detection In Bridges, James Kyle Bethay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vibration based damage detection in bridges is examined with the objective of defining a relationship between substructure stiffness degradation and frequency and mode shape modulation induced by damage. The relationship is explored through finite element modeling of primarily an experimental representation of a three-span concrete bridge structure located at the entrance to the main campus of The University of Mississippi in Oxford. Equivalent beam and 3D finite element models are created of an experimental setup incorporating levels of damage simulated using deck slab bearing pads of varying stiffness. Eigenvalue analysis is performed to examine the change of frequencies for characteristic …

Representation Of Dam-Breach Geometry Using Quadtree Local Mesh Refinement, Marcus Zachariah Mcgrath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Advances in two-dimensional numerical modeling have allodam break floods to be simulated with larger domains than ever before. These types of simulations are important to meet the needs of inundation mapping, consequence analysis, and emergency planning for the large number of significant and high-hazard dams in the United States. Globally refining the mesh to the small cell sizes necessary to resolve small features such as dam breach geometry result in significant computational burden for these types of simulations. This manuscript details the research done to facilitate the implementation of quadtree local mesh refinement to represent dam breach geometry in an …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Irvin Cooper was a prominent music educator in boys’ adolescent voice change research. Dr. Cooper developed the Cambiata concept as a method for teaching boys to sing throughout the voice change. This method was starkly different from the traditional model that encouraged the changing voice to be rested during the voice change. While working as the music supervisor for the Montreal protestant school system, Cooper developed his method of having boys sing during the voice change, which included arrangements and compositions specifically for changing voices. Cooper taught many prominent researchers of adolescent voice change, including Don Collins and John Cooksey. …

Monitoring Damage Initiation And Growth In Composite Structures By Acoustic Emission Method, Kassahun Mekonnen Asamene Jan 2013

Monitoring Damage Initiation And Growth In Composite Structures By Acoustic Emission Method, Kassahun Mekonnen Asamene

Dissertations

In this dissertation, acoustic emission technique is examined as candidate for monitoring the integrity of polymer matrix structural members. Acoustic emission technique has so far been largely limited to laboratory tests and field applications have been mostly limited to qualification tests of aerospace structures. The lack of quantitative indications of damage in composite structural members associated with the complex nature of damage in these materials has been a limiting factor. Generally, a number of failure modes operate simultaneously at a site of damage, and each of these failure modes generates a different type of acoustic emission signal. In addition, issues …

The goal of the present study is to evaluate the mixing performance of jet mixers in both liquid and solid-liquid mixing processes. Jet mixers have been studied for decades for its uses in liquid blending and solid-liquid mixing applications. In solid suspension processes, jet mixers can be just as useful if not more useful than conventional impeller mixers. However, there is a lack of phenomenological models that exist. The erosion and subsequent suspension of solids beds, as well as the suspension of a low concentration of solid particles must be better understood. The specific objectives were to develop analytical, experimental …

Study Of N Incorporation In Insb On Gaas By Molecular Beam Epitaxy For Long Wavelength Infrared Devices, Nimai Chand Patra Jan 2013

Study Of N Incorporation In Insb On Gaas By Molecular Beam Epitaxy For Long Wavelength Infrared Devices, Nimai Chand Patra

Dissertations

The distinguishing features of dilute nitride III-V semiconductors lie in the large simultaneous reduction in the band gap and lattice parameter when N is incorporated in small amounts in an otherwise wide band gap III-V material. In particular, N incorporation in InSb is attracting great attention due to its potential applications in the long wavelength infrared (LWIR) applications. However, the relatively small atomic size of N with respect to Sb makes the growth of good quality InSbN layers challenging with effective N incorporation. In this dissertation we present a correlation of the molecular beam epitaxial growth parameters on the type …

Emerging Capability Or Continuous Challenge? Relocating Knowledge Work And Managing Process Interfaces, Stephan Manning, Thomas Hutzschenreuter, Alexander Strathmann

Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series

This study examines interface management as a dynamic organizational capability supporting an increasing global distribution of knowledge work, based on an in-depth case of an automotive supplier. We show how local responses to experiences of task and interface ambiguity following the relocation of R&D processes may lead to a shift of organizational attention from ex-ante process design to continuous process and interface management. Findings suggest that flexible interface manager positions and partnership structures across locations facilitate local experimentation with effective transfer and handling of ambiguous and partially tacit tasks. This enhances the firm’s capacity to distribute an increasing variety of …

Sustainability Of Water And Wastewater Infrastructure: Using A Public-Private Partnership Model For Project Financial Assessment, Rebecca Werner Trotter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To supplement current and future budget shortfalls for improvements to water and wastewater infrastructure, Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs or P3) are being advocated by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and others as a practical mechanism to ensure financial sustainability. A PPP involves a partnership between a government entity and a concessionaire--consisting of one or more private companies acting as a single, private incorporation--who make an agreement on funding, building, and operating a usually government-provided service, such as drinking water and wastewater infrastructure. This is different from a traditional contract between a government entity and a contractor because the concessionaire …

Abstract

Background

Endothelial dysfunction precedes pathogenesis of vascular complications in diabetes. In recent years, the mechanisms of endothelial dysfunction were investigated to outline strategies for its treatment. However, the therapies for dysfunctional endothelium resulted in multiple clinical trial failures and remain elusive. There is a need for defining hyperglycemia-induced endothelial dysfunction with both generic and specific dysfunctional changes in endothelial cells (EC) using a systems approach. In this study, we investigated hyperglycemia-induced endothelial dysfunction in HUVEC and HMVEC. We investigated hyperglycemia-induced functional changes (superoxide (O2‾), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production and mitochondrial membrane polarization) …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Biodegradable Poly(Vinyl Esters) With Hdac Inhibitory Activity, Kyle Lawrence Horton

Wayne State University Theses

HDAC inhibitors are known to have anti-inflammatory properties. HDAC inhibitors are used in combination with Oct4 to generate induced pluripotent stem cells. I hypothesized that polyesters based on simple aliphatic HDAC inhibitors like valproic acid (VPA) and phenylbutyric acid (PBA) can serve as alternatives to existing polyester biomaterials with improved anti-inflammatory properties and as scaffolds for generation of iPSCs when used in combination with layer-by-layer thin films delivering reprogramming transcription factors. Vinyl ester of phenylbutyric acid (VEPA) and vinyl ester of valproic acid (VEVA) were synthesized from their carboxylic acid precursors using an iridium complex catalyst at yields as high …

Synergistically Coupling Of Solid State Drives And Hard Disks For Qos-Aware Virtual Memory, Ke Liu Jan 2013

Synergistically Coupling Of Solid State Drives And Hard Disks For Qos-Aware Virtual Memory, Ke Liu

Wayne State University Theses

With significant advantages in capacity, power consumption, and price, solid state disk (SSD) has good potential to be employed as an extension of dynamic random-access memory, such that applications with large working sets could run efficiently on a modestly configured system. While initial results reported in recent works show promising prospects for this use of SSD by incorporating it into the management of virtual memory, frequent writes from write-intensive programs could quickly wear out SSD, making the idea less practical.

This thesis makes four contributions towards solving this issue. First, we propose a scheme, HybridSwap, that integrates a hard disk …

It is desired to have artificial optical materials with controllable optical properties. Optical glass is the most common optical material for various applications. This research will attempt to create a thin layer on the substrate with controllable optical properties. The thin layer is a composite material with nanoscale features and controllable refractive index. Two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures will be created on the surface of optical glass using nanosphere lithography. In comparison with conventional techniques, this approach is more efficient and cost-effective for the creation of large areas of thin surface layers as an artificial material. A uniform monolayer of nanospheres will …

Ion Current Signal Detection During Cold Starting And Idling Operation In A Diesel Engine, Sanket Anil Gujarathi Jan 2013

Ion Current Signal Detection During Cold Starting And Idling Operation In A Diesel Engine, Sanket Anil Gujarathi

Wayne State University Theses

Cold starting of diesel engines is characterized by inherent problems such as long cranking periods and combustion instability leading to an increase in fuel consumption and the emission of high concentrations of hydrocarbons which appear as white smoke. Accordingly, a signal indicative of combustion during cold starting and idling operation is important for combustion and emission control. The ion current signal has been considered for the feedback control of both gasoline and diesel engines. However, the ion current signal produced from the combustion of the heterogeneous charge in diesel engines is weaker compared to that produced from the combustion of …

Compressed Sensing And Joint Acquisition Techniques In Mri, Rouhollah Hamtaei Jan 2013

Compressed Sensing And Joint Acquisition Techniques In Mri, Rouhollah Hamtaei

Wayne State University Theses

The relatively long scan times in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) limits some clinical applications and the ability to collect more information in a reasonable period of time. Practically, 3D imaging requires longer acquisitions which can lead to a reduction in image quality due to motion artifacts, patient discomfort, increased costs to the healthcare system and loss of profit to the imaging center. The emphasis in reducing scan time has been to a large degree through using limited k-space data acquisition and special reconstruction techniques. Among these approaches are data extrapolation methods such as "constrained reconstruction" techniques, data interpolation methods such …

Architecture--Performance Interrelationship Analysis In Single/Multiple Cpu/Gpu Computing Systems: Application To Composite Process Flow Modeling, Richard Harrison Haney

Dissertations

Current developments in computing have shown the advantage of using one or more Graphic Processing Units (GPU) to boost the performance of many computationally intensive applications but there are still limits to these GPU-enhanced systems. The major factors that contribute to the limitations of GPU(s) for High Performance Computing (HPC) can be categorized as hardware and software oriented in nature. Understanding how these factors affect performance is essential to develop efficient and robust applications codes that employ one or more GPU devices as powerful co-processors for HPC computational modeling. The present work analyzes and understands the intrinsic interrelationship of both …

Robustness Of A Derivative-Free Adaptive Control Law In The Presence Of Unmodeled Dynamics, Tansel Yucelen, Anthony J. Calise

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although adaptive control theory offers mathematical tools to achieve required system performance without excessive dependence on modeling, its application to safety-critical systems can be limited by the presence of unmodeled dynamics. This paper examines the robustness to unmodeled dynamics of a recently developed derivative-free adaptive control law. In contrast to derivative-based adaptive laws it is shown, using a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, that robustness to unmodeled dynamics is improved by increasing the adaptation gain. This is accomplished by including a bias term in the set of basic functions employed by the adaptive control law. It is shown that derivative-based adaptive laws do …

Hybrid Protocols For Maintaining Connectivity Of Multiagent Systems, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen, Eric N. Johnson Jan 2013

Hybrid Protocols For Maintaining Connectivity Of Multiagent Systems, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen, Eric N. Johnson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper focuses on a new connectivity control architecture for networked multiagent systems based on hybrid protocols. Specifically, for a group of agents subject to Δ-disk proximity graphs, we consider the consensus problem while preserving connectedness with a priori given bounds on the control inputs. The bounds on the control inputs are shown not to depend on potential functions or system states. Instead, the bounds are user selected continuous functions. By using the proposed framework, we show that the maximum distance among neighboring agents decreases strictly, and hence the connectivity problem is solved while satisfying the consensus objective. © 2013 …
