Despite the title, this engineer intelligence guide (EIG) is a photo-interpretation handbook. It was intended to help photo-interpreters recognize streams, rivers, lakes, and other hydrologic features. The introduction says that the purpose is:

a) To give “the officer responsible for furnishing hydrologic and hydraulic data in an assigned area … an understanding of the usefulness and limitations of photography in furnishing the type of information needed …,” and to assist in planning requests for photographic coverages of the assigned area.

The Kentucky Department of Highways, in 1946, sought a more systematic criteria and basis for designing the thickness of bituminous concrete pavements. The Research Division was authorized to pursue this work and to develop the criterion. These efforts were embodied in a report (1) to the Department, which offered a system of design based upon CBR's and EWL's. EWL's were computed originally for a 10-year period but this practice was revised in 1954 to encompass 20-year traffic (more realistic with respect to average road life). Introduction: The Engineering Experiment Station at Utah State University was engaged by the Utah Water and Power Board to make a model analysis of the spillway and stilling basin of the Porcupine Dam. This dam will be located on the East Fork of Litle Bear River, just east of Avon, Utah. It will be approximately 650 feet long and 160 feet high, composed of zones earth fill with rock rip-rap facing. Many attempts have been made to derive mathematical expressions relating evaporation and evapotranspiration, or consumptive use, to climatological data. IN the United States, the Blaney-Criddle formula is probably the best known for estimating consumptive use (2 and 3). Blaney (1) has also suggested that this formula is suitable for estimating evaporation as measured with a Weather Bureau pan. Other well known formulas are the Penman formulas (10), the Thornthwaite formula (15) and the Hargreaves formulas (8). Wechesia louisianae, n. sp., is described from upper Eocene beds at Montgomery, Louisiana. Second species of the genus, it extends the range of Wechesia Frizzell and Exline from Claiborne (middle) Eocene and validates the generic diagnosis.

Studies of fossil and Recent otoliths (sagittae) supply an important line of evidence, bearing on classification of teleost fishes, supplementary to that of anatomy, osteology, and "phylogenetic" paleo ichthyology.

Squirrelfishes (" Holocentridae" of authors) are generalized forms in which evolutionary divergence of some magnitude is reflected in unpreservable details of anatomy, inconspicuous skeletal structures, and striking differentiation of the sagittae. Otoliths show the holocentroid complex to consist of one homogeneous unit (l\fyripristidae, elevated) and another more heterogeneous group (Holocentridae, restricted). These lineages have been separated at least since the middle Eocene.
