In 1949, a 5.737-mile section of portland cement concrete pavement was constructed without the inclusion of transverse joints. The project, designated as Fl 239(4), is a section of US 31W located in Simpson County extending from the Tennessee line (Sta 9+11) to the south city limits of Franklin (Sta 311+40). The pavement is 22 feet wide, 8 inches thick, and is underlain by 1-1/2 inches of compacted No. 10 crushed limestone for insulation and leveling. During the past several years, I have devoted considerable attention and study to bridge-paint systems and specification -- in an attempt to keep abreast with developments and current practices throughout the country. My first proposal (July 30, 1958; copy appended) was motivated by development of a then-new rust-inhibitive pigment suggested by National Lead Company. The pigment had shown considerable promise as a substitute for red lead and appeared in many respects to be superior to red lead -- on of which was economy.

Progressive deterioration and staining of concrete bridge substructures and erosion of abutments may, in many instances, be attributed to the leakage of bridge deck joints. The primary difficulty in maintaining a properly sealed joint is the continual expansion and contraction of the bridge spans. It is proposed to construct an experimental section of roadway, 6.6 miles in length, using coal-tar concrete for base and surface, and to use multiple, coal-tar seals (3 seals) with coverstone on the shoulders. A section of pavement, 5.1 miles in length, incorporating the same structural thicknesses and types of courses but containing normal asphaltic binders, to be constructed on the same route will be designated for comparison and control purposes. The use of the coal-tar will be in compliance with Section 201(e) of the Appalachian Regional Development Acts of 1965.

The dependence of the parameters of the Gaussian mode in laser resonators on the properties of the medium in the cavity is studied. Experimental verification of the theoretical results is presented. It is found that the modes in a high‐gain laser may differ widely from the usual free space resonator results. Also, resonator configurations which in free space are unstable may, with a suitable medium, support low‐loss Gaussian modes.

Sequential switching circuits are commonly classified as being either synchronous or asynchronous. Clock pulses synchronize the operations of the synchronous circuit. The operation of an asynchronous circuit is usually assumed to be independent of such clocks. The operating speed of an asynchronous circuit is thus limited only by basic device speed. One disadvantage of asynchronous circuit design has been the complexity of the synthesis procedures for large circuits.

Shear-resistant light-gage metal diaphragms can be very effective in increasing the load carrying capacity of beams continuously braced by diaphragms, or of columns braced by girts which in turn are braced by diaphragms, if proper connections are made between the individual elements. In this thesis, behavior of diaphragm-braced I-beams, channel beams, and Z-beams under uniform moments, and the behavior of axially loaded I-section columns braced by girts which in turn are braced by diaphragms are investigated.

This report describes experimental and analytical studies of the dynamic behavior of the East Building of the University of California's new Medical Center at San Francisco, California. It also describes experimental tests conducted on the East Building's mechanical service tower and on an adjacent elevator tower. Experimental tests on the East Building were conducted in the summers of 1964 and 1965. Vibrations were produced by eccentric-masstype vibration generators. Frequency responses, time responses, and mode shapes were observed. In the summer 1964 tests, the first mode east-west had 2% of critical damping and the first mode north-south had 1.8%; the values …

The attached report presents significant progress and achievements in the area of asphalt pavement design. Benkelman beam deflections were used extensively in conjunction with our 1958 study of asphalt pavement performance; apparent relationships between 18–kip deflections and pavement structures were evident then although scatter in the data was thought to be necessarily admissible. During the spring and summer of 1966, another extensive series of pavements, built since 1958, were evaluated from the standpoint of performance and deflection. This report summarizes the status of knowledge on the inelastic deformability of steel members and frames. It demonstrates that the inelastic response of planar beams, beamcolumns, connections and frames is well understood and can be adequately, though conservatively, predicted by theory provided the loading is static, proportional and monotonic, and adequate provisions are made to inhibit premature local and lateral-torsional instability. The report reviews the available theoretical work, and examines the experimental evidence.
