The Effects Of Main-Flow Radial Velocity On The Stability Of Developing Laminar Pipe Flow, F. C.T. Shen, T. S. Chen, L. M. Huang Jan 1976

The Effects Of Main-Flow Radial Velocity On The Stability Of Developing Laminar Pipe Flow, F. C.T. Shen, T. S. Chen, L. M. Huang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In studying the stability due to axisymmetric disturbances of the developing flow of an incompressible fluid in the entrance region of a circular tube, a generalized version of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation was derived which takes account of the radial velocity component in the main flow. The new terms in the generalized Orr-Sommerfeld equation are inversely proportional to the Reynolds number. The resulting eigenvalue problem consisting of the disturbance equation and the boundary conditions was solved by a direct numerical integration scheme along with an iteration procedure. Neutral stability curves and critical Reynolds numbers at various axial locations are presented. A …

Installation Induced Stresses For Grouted Roof Bolts, R. N. Nitzsche, Charles J. Haas Jan 1976

Installation Induced Stresses For Grouted Roof Bolts, R. N. Nitzsche, Charles J. Haas

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The judicious use of roof bolts in stabilizing underground openings necessitates the ability to determine the state of stress in and around such bolts. A method of modeling a system of roof bolts is presented. This method is then applied in the determination of the state of stress due to bolt tightening. Two specific roof bolt configurations are considered: a fully grouted post-tensioned bolt and a post-tensioned bolt with grouted-end anchorage. The analysis showed that the grout annulus transferred nearly all of the bolt load 3nto the rock within a distance of 12 hole diameters from the point of bolt …

Anion Grain-Boundary Diffusion In Soidum Chloride, K. S. Sabharwal, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig Dec 1975

Anion Grain-Boundary Diffusion In Soidum Chloride, K. S. Sabharwal, J. Mimkes, Manfred Wuttig

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The grain-boundary diffusion of 131I in Harshaw pure and Ca-doped NaCl was investigated in the temperature range between 430 and 560°C. The Arrhenius plot of the grain-boundary diffusivity parameter Dδ displays a marked dip at around 510°C. It is proposed that this dip is due to a phase transformation occurring at the grain boundary, possibly calcium segregation.

Design Of Film-Substrate Single-Reflection Linear Partial Polarizers, R. M.A. Azzam, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The results of a preceding paper [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 65, 1464,(1975)] are viewed from a different angleas providing the basis for the design of film-substrate single-reflection linear partial polarizers (LPP),which also operate as reflection optical rotators. The important characteristics of a comprehensive set of discrete designs of SiO2-Si LPP’s at λ = 6328 Å are shown graphically.

Polarizer-Surface-Analyzer Null Ellipsometry For Film-Substrate Systems, R. M.A. Azzam, A.-R. M. Zaghloul, N. M. Bashara

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Single-pass polarizer-surface-analyzer null ellipsometry (PSA-NE) can be used to characterize film-substrate systems, provided that the film thickness lies within one of a set of permissible-thickness bands (PTB). For a transparent film on a transparent or absorbing substrate, the PTB structure consists of a small number of finite-bandwidth bands followed by a continuum band that extends from a film thickness of about half the wavelength of light to infinity. We show that this band structure is a direct consequence of the periodicity of the ellipsometric function ρ (the ratio Rp/Rs, of the complex amplitude-reflection coefficients for …

Optimal And Suboptimal Estimation In Differential Pcm And Adaptive Predictive Coding Systems, Jerry Gibson Dec 1975

Optimal And Suboptimal Estimation In Differential Pcm And Adaptive Predictive Coding Systems, Jerry Gibson

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Both differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) and adaptive predictive coding (APC) systems have been used somewhat successfully for low date rate digital voice transmission. A DPCM system has as its goal the removal of signal redundancy prior to transmission by a linear prediction of the incoming signal with a weighted combination of past signal estimates. The error in the prediction process is then quantized and transmitted to the receiver. An identical prediction loop is used at the receiver to reinsert the redundancy, and hence, to reconstruct the speech signal. Both the quantizer and predictor may or may not be adaptive.

Threshold Characteristics Of Multimode Laser Oscillators, Lee W. Casperson Dec 1975

Threshold Characteristics Of Multimode Laser Oscillators, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The oscillation characteristics of a multimode laser are considered in detail, and for the first time saturation by all of the cavity modes is included. Analytical expressions are obtained for the mode amplitudes, linewidths, and over‐all spectral characteristics of lasers operating above and below threshold. It is found that with increasing excitation the spontaneous emission spectrum is gradually resolved into a set of narrow discrete modes. Slightly above threshold the number of modes reduces in a homogeneoulsy broadened laser until only a single mode is oscillating strongly. The theoretical results are in agreement with experimental data that have been reported …

Inelastic Reserve Capacity Of Cold-Formed Beams With Stiffened Compression Elements, Hans Peter Reck, George Winter, Teoman Peköz Nov 1975

Inelastic Reserve Capacity Of Cold-Formed Beams With Stiffened Compression Elements, Hans Peter Reck, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

PREFACE The present Report No. 356 deals with the inelastic reserve strength of cold-formed beams with stiffened compression flanges. The usual elastic design criterion regards the initiation of yielding in the outer fibers as defining failure. This criterion is used in Part I of the A.I.S.C. Specification and in the A.I.S.I. Specification for the design of steel structures. On the other hand, for so-called compact sections, as defined in the A.I.S.C. Specification, it is known that the actual maximum moment of a cross-section exceeds the initial yield moment and is reached only when yielding spreads over the entire section (complete …

Interpretation Of Tests On Welded Light Gage Steel Connections, Mark Shephard, George Winter, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION This report interprets the results of three sets of test data (Ref. 1 through 3) on welded light-gage cold-formed steel specimens. The tests were conducted at Cornell for the American Iron and Steel Institute on 252 symmetric puddle and fillet welded connections tested under monotonically increasing static load. The tested connections consisted of 130 shop welded specimens and 122 field welded specimens. All test connections had the same basic configuration being made up of center plates, referred to as parent plates or connected plates in the references, butted together with one or, in the case of the double sheet …

Pedestrian Accidents In Kentucky, Charles V. Zegeer, Robert C. Deen Nov 1975

Pedestrian Accidents In Kentucky, Charles V. Zegeer, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Pedestrian accident data in Kentucky were analyzed for 1972 and 1973 on a rural, urban, and statewide basis. Results showed that about 1500 pedestrian accidents occur in Kentucky each year. About 30 percent of the pedestrian accidents in rural areas and four percent in urban areas are fatal. Although about 78 percent of Kentucky's pedestrian accidents occur in urban areas, over 62 percent of the pedestrian fatalities occur in rural areas. Specific characteristics of pedestrian accidents were identified and related to human, environmental, and time factors. Highway and street improvements and safety measures generally considered to be effective in minimizing …

Identification Of Hazardous Locations On City Streets, Charles V. Zegeer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The purpose of this study was to develop an effective method for identifying hazardous locations in Kentucky cities (over 2,500 population). Methods used in 45 other states were reviewed. Accident information for 69 of the 97 cities over 2,500 population was used to develop criteria for an identification method.

A Number Method was selected for initial identification of midblocks and intersections on arterial-collector streets and on urban freeways. Rate-Quality Control Methods were included in the form of a critical rate factor computed for each location. A set of critical rate curves was constructed for easy determination of critical locations. A …

Energy Conservation In Uniroyal, Inc., John C. Madigan

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

In the last year, rapid developments have led to the establishment of industry conservation goals and monitoring by the Department of Commerce and the Federal Energy Administration via the various industry associations.

Since 1972, Uniroyal has progressed more than half way toward the 1980 goal of 15% established for the rubber and chemical industries. This paper will describe details of the program with emphasis on new input, such as the computerized tracking method now in use.

Plant studies have provided an assessment of "base" loads vs. process loads, important when considering unit energy consumption. These vary, particularly with the climate …

The Energy Conservation Implications Of Master Metering Of Electric Service In Apartments, Gordon Gross Oct 1975

The Energy Conservation Implications Of Master Metering Of Electric Service In Apartments, Gordon Gross

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

A study has been made of the difference in electricity usage between residents of "Electricity included" apartments and those tenants who pay individual "light bills." The factors which influence owners' and builders' choices of metering service are discussed in detail.

Data taken from over 100 apartment buildings or complexes in 10 major U.S. metropolitan areas and from over 50 major electric power companies are used as the basis for the reported results. Contractors estimates of the costs to convert building service from master to individual meter and some bases for these costs are presented.

The energy conservation potential which might …
