Suggested Chemistry Of Zinc Oxychloride Cements, Charles A. Sorrell Jan 1977

Suggested Chemistry Of Zinc Oxychloride Cements, Charles A. Sorrell

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Solutions of ZnCl2 were prepared from ZnCl2·nH2O and by reaction of zinc metal with HCl. Specific gravities and pH values were determined as a function of composition. A ternary phase, 4ZnO·ZnCl2·5H2O, was precipitated when the ZnCl2 solutions were diluted to a pH of 5.48 ± 0.05. Mixtures of ZnO with ZnCl, and HCI solutions were equilibrated in sealed containers and analyzed by X‐ray diffraction. The resulting phase diagram shows 2 ternary phases, 4ZnO·ZnCl2·5H2O (4·1·5) and ZnO·ZnCl2·2H2O (1.1.2), both of which are soluble …

Subsolidus Equilibria And Stabilization Of Tetragonal Zro2 In The System Zro2‐Al2o3‐Sio2, Charles A. Sorrell

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The irreversible reaction between zircon and alumina to form mullite and zirconia was observed to proceed very slowly at 1480°C, confirming the existence of a stable join between mullite and zirconia in addition to the join between mullite and zircon. Attempts to determine equilibrium assemblages in powder samples of several combinations of the constituents at 1300° and 1400°C were unsuccessful. Metastable tetragonal ZrO2 was observed in fired powder samples containing kaolinite, in fired zircon‐alumina samples, and in calcined gels prepared from zirconyl nitrate, aluminum nitrate, and colloidal silica in water. Tetragonal ZrO2 was the dominant crystalline phase in …

Field Investigation Of County Road Bases And Subgrades, D. G. Shurig, Jean E. Hittle, E. J. Yoder, W H. Goetz Jan 1977

Field Investigation Of County Road Bases And Subgrades, D. G. Shurig, Jean E. Hittle, E. J. Yoder, W H. Goetz

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

This bulletin focuses on the investigation, sampling, and testing of in-place wearing surface materials, in-place base materials, and in-place subgrade materials in advance of paving. This is especially important the first time the road is to be blacktopped. However, the investigation and testing methods suggested herein are equally applicable to existing blacktop pavements needing reconstruction. The test methods focus on two quick field tests that have been developed through research to measure equivalent CBR values. CBR is a measure of the load-carrying capacity of base or subgrade materials.

The methods and procedures set forth in this bulletin should go far …

Review Report For Water Resources Development Missouri River South Dakota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Montana, Volume 2 Of 3

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The purpose of this study is to investigate a wide range of water resources problems and opportunities all having in common some link with the Missouri River. A number of outstanding, interrelated Congressional actions affecting the river reach upstream from Sioux City have been consolidated under this investigation. Authority to combine five outstanding surveys is contained in Office, Chief of Engineers' (DCE's) first indorsement to Missouri River Division letter of 3 July 1972, subject: "Consolidation of Survey Investigations of the Metropolitan Region of Kansas City, the Platte River in Nebraska, and the Missouri River from Sioux City to Fort Peck …

Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Of The Unchannelized Missouri River In South Dakota, James R. Clapp Jan 1977

Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Of The Unchannelized Missouri River In South Dakota, James R. Clapp

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

Areas of eight habitats were identified, delineated, and measured along the unchannelized Missouri River in South Dakota. Agricultural and urban developments existed on 60 percent of the land within 1 km of the river. Six habitat types made up the non-developed land in the study area: cottonwood-dogwood (16 percent), cottonwood-willow (9 percent), elm-oak (7 percent), cattail marsh (3 percent), sand dune (3 percent), and sand bar (1 percent). All non-developed habitats except sand bar were sampled to obtain vegetative composition and to determine their value to wildlife. The value of each habitat to nine faunal groups of wildlife was subjectively …

Feedlot Runoff Holding Ponds-Nutrient Levels And Related Management Aspects, Elbert C. Dickey, D. H. Vanderholm Jan 1977

Feedlot Runoff Holding Ponds-Nutrient Levels And Related Management Aspects, Elbert C. Dickey, D. H. Vanderholm

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Collection, storage, and ultimate land disposal of livestock feedlot runoff is becoming a more common practice as a result of increasing state and federal regulations prohibiting uncontrolled discharge of runoff. As a result of chemical, physical, and biological actions during the storage phase, the runoff applied to land from storage is often greatly different from that entering storage directly from the feedlot. This study was designed to observe those changes in the runoff during storage, and to evaluate their effect on land disposal practices. Six concrete paved feedlots with runoff control systems were studied, with emphasis on variations in nitrogen, …

Potential-Selective Deposition Of Copper From Chloride Solutions Containing Iron, Ralph E. White, James A. Trainham, John Newman, Thomas W. Chapman Jan 1977

Potential-Selective Deposition Of Copper From Chloride Solutions Containing Iron, Ralph E. White, James A. Trainham, John Newman, Thomas W. Chapman

Faculty Publications

The hydrometallurgy of copper may involve leaching of the metal from its ore with an aqueous solution containing cupric and ferric chloride. The subsequent deposition of copper from such a process stream is modeled here in an idealized electrochemical cell with a rotating-disk electrode. The potential distribution and concentration profiles within the diffusion layer are predicted for given potential differences between the electrode and the solution. The cuprous ion, which is formed by the reduction of the complexed cupric ion at the electrode, is stabilized in the chloride solution and can react either at the electrode or with ferric species …

Control Of Population Densities Surrounding Nuclear Power Plants, A. V. Nero, C. H. Schroeder, W. W.S. Yen Jan 1977

Control Of Population Densities Surrounding Nuclear Power Plants, A. V. Nero, C. H. Schroeder, W. W.S. Yen

Faculty Scholarship

In view of the requirement that the California Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission must specify land-use/population density control measures to be used in the vicinity of nuclear power plants being granted land use, the possible forms of such measures are examined. Since these measures must maintain population densities below Nuclear Regulatory Commission criteria, if appropriate, NRC criteria for land use and population densities are given particular attention. In addition, a preliminary comparison of the cost of possible control measures with the reduced potential for damage to the public health and safety is made, yielding the result that control measures …
