Solar-Cell Design Based On A Distributed Diode Analysis, Jack L. Boone, Thomas P. Van Doren Jan 1978

Solar-Cell Design Based On A Distributed Diode Analysis, Jack L. Boone, Thomas P. Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The front surface of a p-n junction solar cell has resistive losses associated with the diffused layer, the metal-semiconductor contact, and the grid structure. These losses are analyzed by considering the spatially distributed nature of the p-n junction and the grid conductors. This distributed diode analysis is especially useful for solar cells operated under concentrated sunlight conditions. The results show the dependence of the V-I characteristics and the maximum power output per unit cell on the ratio of the diffused layer resistance to the junction dynamic resistance. This ratio can assist the designer in establishing proper grid structure geometries and …

Vehicle Detection Using A Magnetic Field Sensor, Stanley V. Marshall Jan 1978

Vehicle Detection Using A Magnetic Field Sensor, Stanley V. Marshall

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The measurement of vehicle magnetic moments and the results from use of a fluxgate magnetic sensor to actuate a lighting system from the magnetic fields of passing vehicles is reported. A typical U.S. automobile has a magnetic moment of about 200 A-m2(Ampere-meters2), while for a school bus it is about 2000 A-m2. When the vehicle is modeled as an ideal magnetic dipole with a moment of 200 A-m2, the predicted results from an analysis of the sensor-vehicle geometry agree closely with observations of the system response to automobiles. Test 1290: Ford Fw-40 Diesel, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab Jan 1978

Test 1290: Ford Fw-40 Diesel, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

EXPLANATION OF THE TEST PROCEDURE General Tractors are tested at the University of Nebraska according to the Agricultural Tractor Test Code approved by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers or official Nebraska test procedure. The manufacturer selects the tractor to be tested and certifies that it is a stock model. Each tractor is equipped with the common power consuming accessories such as power steering, power lift pump, generator, etc., if available. Power consuming accessories may be disconnected only when the means for disconnecting can be reached from the operating station. An official representative of …

Direct Solution Of The Isothermal Gibbs-Duhem Equation For Multicomponent Systems, José A. Martinez-Ortiz, David B. Manley

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The numerical solution of the relative volatility form of the isothermal Gibbs-Duhem equation for multicomponent systems Is carried out by a relaxation technique for two ternary systems at five different temperatures. This direct method of solution eliminates calculating and differentiating the excess Gibbs free energy as required by other indirect methods. © 1978, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.

Algorithms For The Solution Of Systems Of Coupled Second-Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Brendan O'Shea Jan 1978

Algorithms For The Solution Of Systems Of Coupled Second-Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Brendan O'Shea

Articles

Several step-by-step methods for the computer solution systems of coupled second-order ordinary differential equations, are examined from the point of view of efficiency “time-wise” and “storage-wise”. Particular reference is made to a system arising in the close-coupling approximation of the Schroedinger equation. The stability of the solution is also considered.

The Dufour Effect. Ii. Experimental Confirmation Of The Onsager Heat-Mass Reciprocal Relation For A Binary Liquid Mixture, Richard L. Rowley, Frederick H. Horne

Faculty Publications

Although experimental verification of Onsager's reciprocal relations has been achieved in a variety of cases, no quantitative test of the heat-mass reciprocal relation for a binary liquid system has previously been reported. We present in this communication experimental proof of the equality of the mass-heat reciprocal relation for the system carbon tetrachloride - cyclohezane.

Boeing Engineering And Construction; Groundwater And Surface Water Investigation Report, C. Earl Israelsen, Frank W. Haws

Reports

Boeing Engineering and Construction (BEAC) is investigating the feasibility of transporting Utah coal via slurry pipeline to the west coast. Such an investigation requires an abundance of data concerning such things as they availability and quality of water which can be slurried with coal, the location of such water with respect to the deposits of coal, and the ultimate disposal of the water at the pipeline's end.

This study generated a limited amount of new data and gathered existing data and information related to surface and underground water within a 50-mile radius of Emery, Utah, but restricted primarily to the …

Mathematical Modeling Of A Sociological And Hydrologic Decision System, Wade H. Andrews, J. Paul Riley, Malcolm B. Masteller Jan 1978

Mathematical Modeling Of A Sociological And Hydrologic Decision System, Wade H. Andrews, J. Paul Riley, Malcolm B. Masteller

Reports

The general goal of this study was to develop a functional model of the sociological and related hydrologic elements in flood control decision-making. Conceptual system models were developed for the hydrologic system and for the sociological system. The sociological variables were identified as they related to the steps in the process of the model. Following the conceptual decision process model the social elements of the model were calibrated from data obtained from field studies and mathematical equations were developed and tested. Finally simulations of the process were run. After adjustments were made the model was found to function. Several methodological …
