INTRODUCTION In recent years, high strength steels have been used in automotive structural components to achieve weight reduction while complying with Federal safety standards. The current design recommendations, the "Guide for Preliminary Design of Sheet Steel Automotive Structural Components" 1 was issued by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) in February 1981. It was recommended for application to materials with yield strength up to 80 ksi. These design expressions are based primalily on the 1968 Edition of the AISI "Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members" 2 which was written for the design of buildings. The AISI Specification …

Estimation Of Equivalent Axleloads: Computer Program Documentation, John M. Salsman, John A. Deacon
Estimation Of Equivalent Axleloads: Computer Program Documentation, John M. Salsman, John A. Deacon
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The estimation of equivalent axleloads (EAL) requires the correlation of several data bases. Described herein are three computer programs which summarize truckweight data and classification data, and combine the two data bases to estimate EAL's for each site where classification counts are available in a given year.
The programs also present the data in two matrices to characterize the effects that geographic area, federal-aid classification, coal-haul volume and total volume have on each of the traffic parameters necessary to compute EAL's.
Jackson Purchase Parkway Pavement Study, James H. Havens
Jackson Purchase Parkway Pavement Study, James H. Havens
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Four distinct patterns of cracking were found. Temperature cracks are transverse and occur at intervals of about 15 to 88 feet. Roller-induced cracking has been made apparent by weather and erosion. Longitudinal cracking is usually at the edges of the wheel paths where rutting is prominent. Map cracking or checkering in the wheel paths is caused by the maximum shear stresses occurring at a depth equal to 1/3rd the radius of the loaded area (tire print). This cracking penetrated about 2.5 inches. This cracking and weakness was found only in the all-gravel asphaltic concrete. No stripping was found, but evidences …

Water-Induced Surface Failures On I 65, Hardin County, Kentucky, Ellis G. Williams, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This report documents an investigation of water-related distress on portions of I 65 in Hardin County, Kentucky, on Muldraugh Hill. An open-graded surface placed on a full-depth asphaltic concrete pavement had shown areas of flushing and shallow shear failures in the outer lanes after one year of service. Cores were obtained from the outer lanes in areas exhibiting no problems to shear and flow failures. Core sites also were chosen across the lane to represent edge, wheel track, and between wheel track conditions. Visual inspection of the cores was made under normal lighting and an ultraviolet light and photographs were …

A model for the behavior of donor doped BaTiO3 as a function of oxygen activity is proposed. Thermogravimetric measurements show good agreement with the proposed model. The results show that donor-doped BaTiO3 is stoichiometric with electronic compensation of the donor at low oxygen activity, but with increasing oxygen activity, compensation becomes ionic as excess oxygen is absorbed. The possible compensation mechanisms are discussed. © 1984 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

A 14×16 km diameter collapse caldera has been recognized 10 km south of Guatemala City, Guatemala. The caldera is north of the presently active volcano Pacaya and west of Agua, a large stratovolcano. The caldera was not previously recognized because its eastern and western margins coincide with faults that outline the Guatemala City graben and because the northern margin of the caldera is buried by pyroclastic rocks. The existence of the northern caldera margin is now established by gravity data and a variety of geological observations including circumferential faults, hot springs, well-log data, and lithological changes in sedimentary rocks. Method For Stemming Tomatoes, Henry F. Studer, R. A. Cavaletto, Gene Giacomelli
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Method and apparatus for de-stemming picked tomatoes. Each tomato is introduced into the upper end of a generally vertically disposed, open-ended, resilient, open-mesh fabric tube, a substantial portion of which approximates but is larger than the diameter of the tomato. The stem penetrates into and through the open mesh at some point, the open areas being somewhat larger than the stem, while the tomato continues to fall, thereby exerting a bending moment on the stem that snaps the stem from the fruit. The tomato, free from its stem, is discharged from a lower end of the tube.

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Rigid Pavements Using Road Rater Deflections [1984], Gary W. Sharpe, Mark Anderson, Robert C. Deen, Herbert F. Southgate
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Road Rater deflections have been used to determine in-place structural conditions of rigid and composite pavements, based on modifications of principles and experience with the structural evaluation of flexible pavements. Details of the use of elastic layer theory to simulate deflection measurements associated with loadings for the Kentucky Road Rater are presented. Included is an illustration of the use of field deflection measurements to "back calculate'" in-place moduli. The procedures are generally iterative and involve matching measured deflections with theoretical deflections. Elastic layer principles have been used to simulate deflections only at the midslab position. Relationships regarding deflections at other …

A Statistical Comparison Of A Direct Filtration And A Conventional Water Treatment Facility In The Intermountain Region, Susan K. Burns, V. Dean Adams
Reports
Interest in low-cost direct filtration facilities and their effectiveness in treating the potable water sources of the Intermountain Region is increasing as the need for treated water supplies increase. Direct filtration is a water treatment scheme which does not include sedimentation and in some cases flocculation. Compared to conventional treatment, direct filtration has lowered capital costs, reduced space requirement, and decreased sludge quantities. Moreover, the direct filtration process may offer large reductions in coagulant dosages and costs.
Currently information comparing a direct filtration system to a conventional water treatment system in the Intermountain area is not readily available. The specific …

Three-Reflection Halfwave And Quarterwave Retarders Using Dielectric-Coated Metallic Mirrors, T. F. Thonn, R. M.A. Azzam
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
A design procedure is described to determine the thicknesses of single-layer coatings of a given dielectric on a given metallic substrate so that a specified net phase retardance (and/or a net relative amplitude attenuation) between the p and s polarizations is achieved after three reflections from a symmetrical arrangement of three mirrors that maintain collinearity of the input and output beams. Examples are presented of halfwave and quarterwave retarders (HWR and QWR) that use a ZnS-Ag film-substrate system at the CO2-laser wavelength λ = 10.6 µm. The equal net reflectances for the p and s polarizations are computed …
