Heats Of Transport From Diffusion Thermoeffect Measurements On Binary Liquid Mixtures Of Carbon Tetrachloride With Benzene, Toluene, 2-Propanone, N-Hexane, And N-Octane, Richard L. Rowley, S. C. Yi

Faculty Publications

Measurements of heats of transport are reported for binary liquid mixtures containing carbon tetrachloride and benzene, toluene, 2-propanone, n-hexane, or n-octane at 298 K and ambient pressure. Additionally, measurements were made at 308 K for carbon tetrachloride with benzene, toluene, and 2-propanone. The corresponding heat-mass Onsager coefficients are also reported, from which thermal diffusion ratios have been calculated based on Onsager reciprocity. These data will be used in a companion paper to report a modified Enskog method for correlation and prediction of heats of transport.

Evaluation Of Unmanned Radar Installations, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, John A. Deacon, Richard J. Kryscio Dec 1987

Evaluation Of Unmanned Radar Installations, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, John A. Deacon, Richard J. Kryscio

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Several unmanned radar devices were installed on I75 in northern Kentucky in an attempt to reduce speeds. It was assumed that drivers use radar detectors to exceed the speed limit with a resulting variance between their speeds and others in the traffic stream. Therefore, a reduction in overall speeds and variance was expected to reduce the probability of accidents. Historical data indicated an unusually high accident rate for the study area.

Emphasis was placed on collection and analysis of speed-related data. In addition, a survey of radar detector usage was made and accident patterns were documented.

Speed measures analyzed included …

Definition Of An Asymmetric Domain For Intercrystalline Misorientation In Cubic Materials In The Space Of Euler Angles, Brent L. Adams, Junwu Zhao

Faculty Publications

The authors wish to acknowledge the support of the United States Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, under grant No. DE-FG02-85ER45203. Critical review by Professor Dorian Hatch of the Physics Department at Brigham Young University is gratefully acknowledged. A new asymmetric domain for intercrystalline misorientation is defined in the space of Euler angles for materials exhibiting cubic (Oh point-group) lattice symmetry. The invariant measure for this new domain is nearly constant; this is in significant contrast to the previous domain defined by MacKenzie [Biornetrika (1958), 45, 229-240]. Distribution functions in the misorientation can now be represented with greater …

Constraint On The Optical Constants Of A Transparent Film On An Absorbing Substrate For Inversion Of The Ratio Of Complex P And S Reflection Coefficients At A Given Angle Of Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, M. A. Habli

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

An absorbing substrate of complex refractive index n2-jk2 can be coated by a transparent thin film of refractive index n1 and normalized thickness ζ so that the ratio of complex reflection coefficients for the pand s polarizations of the film-covered substrate ρ is the inverse of that of the film-free substrate ρ¯ at a given angle of incidence φ. A pair of parallel (metallic) mirrors, one uncoated and the other coated with a ρ-inverting layer, causes a beam displacement without change of polarization and with a certain net reflectance (insertion loss) ℜ. In this …

Traffic Volume Estimates And Growth Trends, John A. Deacon, Jerry G. Pigman, Ahmad Mohsenzadeh

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this study was to develop a procedure to forecast highway traffic volumes through the use of growth factors representative of Kentucky highways and reflecting effects of important socioeconomic and demographic variables. A two-stage modeling process was used. In the first, linear regression models were used to relate average daily travel on Kentucky roadways to personal income, price of fuel, and total miles of streets and highways. In the second, cross-tabulation models were used to relate growth in volume at a specific site--expressed relative to the statewide ADT--to highway functional classification rural/urban location, county population growth, SMSA/non-SMSA designation, …

Native Aggregates For Skid Resistance, Scott P. Hall, David Q. Hunsucker, David L. Allen, Gary W. Sharpe

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objectives of the study were 1) to identify sources of native aggregates with varying histories of skid resistance performance; 2) to evaluate and correlate native aggregate characteristics, processing techniques, and other factors with skid resistance and surface mixture performance; and 3) to provide guidelines for implementation of research findings. Limestone, sandstone, river gravel, and control aggregates (granite, traprock, and slags) were subjected to a battery of tests to determine physical relationships between aggregate type and skid resistance.

Laboratory results were analyzed for correlations among themselves and for correlations with skid number data obtained from pavements containing aggregates involved in …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Adaptive Histogram Equalization For Contrast Enhancement, John B. Zimmerman, Stephen M. Pizer, Edward V. Staab, J. Randolph Perry, William Mccartney, Bradley C. Brenton Nov 1987

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Adaptive Histogram Equalization For Contrast Enhancement, John B. Zimmerman, Stephen M. Pizer, Edward V. Staab, J. Randolph Perry, William Mccartney, Bradley C. Brenton

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Adaptive Histogram Equalization (AHE), a method of contrast enhancement which is sensitive to local spatial information in an image, has been proposed as a solution to the problem of the inability of ordinary display devices to depict the full dynamic intensity range in some medical images. This method is automatic, reproducible, and simultaneously displays most of the information contained in the grey-scale contrast of the image. However, it has not been known whether the use of AHE causes the loss of diagnostic information relative to the commonly-used method intensity windowing. In the current work, AHE and intensity windowing are compared …

Surface-To-Surface Transition Via Electromagnetic Coupling Of Coplanar Waveguides, Robert W. Jackson, David W. Matolak Nov 1987

Surface-To-Surface Transition Via Electromagnetic Coupling Of Coplanar Waveguides, Robert W. Jackson, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

A transition is investigated which couples coplanar waveguide on one substrate surface (a motherboard) to coplanar waveguide on another substrate surface (a semiconductor chip or subarray) placed above the first. No wire bonds are necessary. A full-wave analysis using coupled line theory is presented and verified experimentally. The use of this transition for coupling to millimeter-wave integrated circuits is discussed.

Nebraska's Modified-Open-Front Farrowing Houses Design And Operation, Gerald R. Bodman, Donald G. Levis, Duane E. Reese Nov 1987

Nebraska's Modified-Open-Front Farrowing Houses Design And Operation, Gerald R. Bodman, Donald G. Levis, Duane E. Reese

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Two modified-open-front non-mechanically ventilated farrowing houses with creep boxes were operated over a two year period. Annual energy requirements were in the range of 10.6 to 10.9 cents per crate per day. No adverse effects on pig performance were realized. In most instances pig performance exceeded national standards of excellent performance—survival rates in excess of 90% and 21-day pig weights of 5.9 to 6.8 kg (13 to 15 lb). The study verified that another alternative is available to producers who do not want additional mechanical equipment to operate and maintain.

Pulse-Train Instabilities In A Mode-Locked Argon Laser: Experimental Studies, Duncan Leo Macfarlane, Lee W. Casperson Nov 1987

Pulse-Train Instabilities In A Mode-Locked Argon Laser: Experimental Studies, Duncan Leo Macfarlane, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The output train of pulses from an acousto-optically mode-locked argon-ion laser was studied as a function of the loss modulation frequency for small detunings from the optimum c/2L modulation. A shift away from the optimum frequency by as little as 1 part in 10⁴ was found to produce several strong lower-frequency components that amplitude modulate the mode-locked pulse train. Notably, the strongest subharmonic is a frequency near ƒopt/4. Further detuning results in an irregular, slow (of the order of 10⁵ Hz) amplitude envelope on the pulse train. The homodyne spectrum of this phase of operation represents a progressive filling-in behavior …

Attic radiant barriers made of aluminum foil are becoming a popular way for homeowners to save energy and money in Southern states. They are increasing in popularity for two reasons. First, tests by the Florida Solar Energy Center and other groups show that they work. Second, manufacturers are improving the quality of radiant barrier materials.

To most homeowners, attic radiant barriers are a new energy conservation concept; many of them have questions about how radiant barriers work and how to use them. This Energy Note answers some of the most commonly asked questions. It also recommends ways to install radiant …

Load And Communications Balancing On Multiprocessor Logic Simulation Engines, Ken Wong, Mark A. Franklin Oct 1987

Load And Communications Balancing On Multiprocessor Logic Simulation Engines, Ken Wong, Mark A. Franklin

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The problem considered in this paper is to find an assignment of logic components to processors which will achieve logic simulation speed-ups approaching the ideal for large processor populations. This problem becomes particularly important when a significant portion of the speed-up expected from logic simulation engines is attributed to load sharing (as opposed to obtaining speed-up by employing specialized hardware to carry out specific tasks associated with the simulation process such as event queue manipulation or function evaluation). Our research considers this problem for a particular multiprocessor simulation architecture for which a performance model has bene developed. The model is …

Evaluation Of Asphalt Additive -- Chemkrete, L. John Fleckenstein, David L. Allen, Gary W. Sharpe, Scott P. Hall, David Q. Hunsucker Oct 1987

Evaluation Of Asphalt Additive -- Chemkrete, L. John Fleckenstein, David L. Allen, Gary W. Sharpe, Scott P. Hall, David Q. Hunsucker

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Construction, performance, and cost-effectiveness evaluations of an AC-10 treated with Chemkrete (CTI-101) and an untreated AC-20 are presented. Laboratory tests, and field tests which include marshall stability, density test, repeated load test, road-ratter deflection data, and visual observation are summarized.

Because of the apparent failure of Chemkrete to significantly enhance the performance of the pavement, and the additional cost for the use of Chemkrete, it would not be recommended for further use in the state of Kentucky.

Pavement Designs Based On Work, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen Oct 1987

Pavement Designs Based On Work, Herbert F. Southgate, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Thickness design curves presented in the report provide a systematic methodology for the selection of equivalent pavement designs for a broad range of layered systems. This is a unified system since the failure criteria are founded on the same concept of work strain and work. The analyses of stress-strain fields in the layered systems are based on elastic layered theory. This theory is represented by the Chevron N-layered computer program.

The report also summarizes the historical development and evolution of pavement design in Kentucky.

Reliability Assessment Of High-Risk Steel Bridges By Nondestructive Test Methods, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Vishwas G. Oka, Robert C. Deen Oct 1987

Reliability Assessment Of High-Risk Steel Bridges By Nondestructive Test Methods, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Vishwas G. Oka, Robert C. Deen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Fatigue-crack related failures of high-risk (fracture-critical) steel bridges may be prevented through application of nondestructive tests (NDT). Economical reliability assessment of those structures requires 1) application of a suitable NDT method, 2) testing of fatigue-susceptible members, and 3 ) periodic retests of those members to preclude problems with growing or previously undetected flaws.

Six conventional NDT techniques were tested in the laboratory using buttweld configured specimens having intentionally embedded cracks. Those NDT methods were 1) visual inspection, 2) magnetic-particle testing, 3) dyepenetrant testing, 4) florescent-enhanced surface testing, 5 ) eddy-current testing, and 6) ultrasonic testing. The other NDT methods provided …

A Theory Of Lexical Semantics, William C. Purdy Oct 1987

A Theory Of Lexical Semantics, William C. Purdy

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The linguistic theory of Richard Montague (variously referred to as Montague Grammar or Montague Semantics) provides a comprehensive formalized account of natural language semantics. It appears to be particularly applicable to the problem of natural language understanding by computer systems. However the theory does not deal with meaning at the lexical level. With few exceptions, lexical items are treated simply as unanalyzed basic expressions. As a result, comparison of distinct lexical meanings or of semantic expressions containing these lexical meanings falls outside the theory. In this paper, I attempt to provide a compatible compatible theory of lexical semantics which may …

Effects Of Hysteresis With Air Entrapment On Water Flow In The Unsaturated Zone, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, J. C. Parker Oct 1987

Effects Of Hysteresis With Air Entrapment On Water Flow In The Unsaturated Zone, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi, J. C. Parker

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Effects of hysteresis with air entrapment on water content and head distributions, surface fluxes, and water balance components are investigated by finite element simulations of flow in one- and two-dimensional spatial domains. Results of one-dimensional analyses indicate that effects of hysteresis are markedly influenced by surface boundary conditions and to a lesser extent by initial conditions. Stipulation of flux-controlled boundary conditions results in minimal hysteretic effects, while potential-type boundary conditions produce substantial deviations between hysteretic and nonhysteretic simulations. The latter effects are attributable in large part to differences in surface conductivity associated with air entrapment. Predicted water content distributions for …
