Multifidelity Comparison Of Supersonic Wave Drag Prediction Methods Using Axisymmetric Bodies †, Troy Abraham, David Lazzara, Douglas Hunsaker
Multifidelity Comparison Of Supersonic Wave Drag Prediction Methods Using Axisymmetric Bodies †, Troy Abraham, David Lazzara, Douglas Hunsaker
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations
Low-fidelity analytic and computational wave drag prediction methods assume linear aerodynamics and small perturbations to the flow. Hence, these methods are typically accurate for only very slender geometries. The present work assesses the accuracy of these methods relative to high-fidelity Euler, compressible computational-fluid-dynamics solutions for a set of axisymmetric geometries with varying radius-to-length ratios (R/L). Grid-resolution studies are included for all computational results to ensure grid-resolved results. Results show that the low-fidelity analytic and computational methods match the Euler CFD predictions to around a single drag count (~1.0 × 10–4) for geometries with R/L ≤ 0.05 …

Developing sustainable manufacturing methods that balance environmental and economic aspects is challenging. A comprehensive analysis of the economics of machining and carbon emissions is essential to encourage adopting sustainable practices. This work presents the machinability and comparative sustainability analysis of Nimonic 80 superalloy when it is machined utilizing a novel, environmentally friendly vegetable oil-based hybrid nanofluid-minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) and liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) technique. The main objective is to comprehend the efficacy of the proposed approach on tool life, surface roughness, power consumption, total machining costs, and carbon emissions. Compared to other machining conditions, the use of hybrid nanofluid-MQL …
Developing More Useful Equity Measurements For Flood-Risk Management, Adam Pollack, Casey Helgeson, Carolyn Kousky, Klaus Keller
Developing More Useful Equity Measurements For Flood-Risk Management, Adam Pollack, Casey Helgeson, Carolyn Kousky, Klaus Keller
Dartmouth Scholarship
Decision-makers increasingly invoke equity to motivate, design, implement and evaluate strategies for managing flood risks. Unfortunately, there is little guidance on how analysts can develop measurements that support these tasks. Here we analyse how equity can be defined and measured by surveying 167 peer-reviewed publications that explicitly state an interest in equity in the context of flood-risk management. Our main result is a taxonomy that systematizes how equity has been, and can be, defined and measured in flood-risk research. The taxonomy embodies how equity is a pluralistic and unavoidably ethical concept. Despite this, we find that most quantitative studies fail …

Performance Of High-Dose Reclaimed Asphalt Mixtures (Raps) In Hot In-Place Recycling Based On Balanced Design, Lei Jiang, Junan Shen, Wei Wang
Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications
This study endeavors to employ a balanced design methodology, aiming to equilibrate the resistance to rutting and cracking exhibited by hot in-place recycling asphalt mixtures containing a high dose of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). The primary goal is to ascertain the optimal amount of new binder necessary for practical engineering applications, ensuring a balanced rutting and crack resistance performance of recycled asphalt mixtures. The investigation mainly employed wheel-tracking tests and semi-circular bending tests to assess the rutting and cracking performance of recycled asphalt mixtures with a different dose of RAP (in China, it is common to use RAP with 80% …
Designed For Life: Unearthing Just And Sustainable Urban Design Through The Daylighting Of Phalen Creek, Corgan R. Archuleta
Designed For Life: Unearthing Just And Sustainable Urban Design Through The Daylighting Of Phalen Creek, Corgan R. Archuleta
Geography Honors Projects
This thesis conceptualizes a relational approach to urban design. Often separated from justice, I argue urban design can shape spaces to enable respectful and reciprocal human and more-than- human relationships. Focusing on Phalen Creek in Saint Paul, Minnesota, I illuminate just and sustainable possibilities between ecologically sustainable and socially inclusive design. Phalen Creek was a natural waterway buried in a pipe during 20th century urbanization to be partially reconstructed through daylighting. The Indigenous and Immigrant stories driving restoration expand urban design’s liberatory potential. Combining just sustainabilities with infrastructure theory and Indigenous Knowledges, I contend urban design offers a relational approach …

Kinetics-Based Inference Of Environment-Dependent Microbial Interactions And Their Dynamic Variation, Hyun-Seob Song, Na-Rae Lee, Aimee K. Kessell, Hugh C. Mccullough, Seo-Young Park, Kang Zhou, Dong-Yup Lee
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Microbial communities in nature are dynamically evolving as member species change their interactions subject to environmental variations. Accounting for such context-dependent dynamic variations in interspecies interactions is critical for predictive ecological modeling. In the absence of generalizable theoretical foundations, we lack a fundamental understanding of how microbial interactions are driven by environmental factors, significantly limiting our capability to predict and engineer community dynamics and function. To address this issue, we propose a novel theoretical framework that allows us to represent interspecies interactions as an explicit function of environmental variables (such as substrate concentrations) by combining growth kinetics and a generalized …

Electron-Phonon Interaction Mediated Gigantic Enhancement Of Thermoelectric Power Factor Induced By Topological Phase Transition., Zhi Li, Koushik Pal, Huiju Lee, Chris Wolverton, Yi Xia
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
We propose an effective strategy to significantly enhance the thermoelectric power factor (PF) of a series of 2D semimetals and semiconductors by driving them toward a topological phase transition (TPT). Employing first-principles calculations with an explicit consideration of electron-phonon interactions, we analyze the electronic transport properties of germanene across the TPT by applying hydrogenation and biaxial strain. We reveal that the nontrivial semimetal phase, hydrogenated germanene with 8% biaxial strain, achieves a considerable 4-fold PF enhancement, attributed to the highly asymmetric electronic structure and semimetallic nature of the nontrivial phase. We extend the strategy to another two representative 2D materials …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
To advance our comprehension of the complex geological history and mantle dynamics in the north atlantic region, we employ all available broadband seismic data recorded in greenland to reveal an abnormal mantle transition zone (mtz) structure. Central and eastern greenland exhibits depressed 410 and 660 km discontinuities (d410 and d660, respectively) bordering the mtz, indicative of a substantial thermal anomaly associated with an underlying plume, surpassing the 1,800°c threshold for post-garnet phase transitions at the d660. Variations in mtz thickness across greenland stem from differing temperature anomalies at the d410 and d660, possibly linked to a tilted plume within the …

Theoretical Model Of Femtosecond Coherence Spectroscopy Of Vibronic Excitons In Molecular Aggregates, Alexander J. Rode, Paul C. Arpin, Daniel B. Turner
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
When used as pump pulses in transient absorption spectroscopy measurements, femtosecond laser pulses can produce oscillatory signals known as quantum beats. The quantum beats arise from coherent superpositions of the states of the sample and are best studied in the Fourier domain using Femtosecond Coherence Spectroscopy (FCS), which consists of one-dimensional amplitude and phase plots of a specified oscillation frequency as a function of the detection frequency. Prior works have shown ubiquitous amplitude nodes and π phase shifts in FCS from excited-state vibrational wavepackets in monomer samples. However, the FCS arising from vibronic-exciton states in molecular aggregates have not been …

Measuring Soot In A Novel Configuration For Diffusion Flames Fueled By Ethylene Doped With Iso-Dodecane, Christian Bjork
Honors Scholar Theses
Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) are seen as the path forward for decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors. Using SAFs over traditional fossil fuels abates carbon dioxide emissions but still may present soot emission problems. A milestone in the abatement of soot would be understating its formation mechanisms.
This study aims to quantify soot products resulting from an ethylene flame doped with iso-dodecane, a surrogate SAF component. The burner selected for the investigation is the novel Planar Mixing Layer Flame (PMLF) which allows the tracking of soot formation with the height above the burner (HAB) in a stable diffusion flame. A baseline ethylene-fueled flame …

Analyzing The Effects Of Atmospheric Turbulent Fluctuations On The Wake Structure Of Wind Turbines And Their Blade Vibrational Dynamics, Alayna Farrell, Fernando Ponta, Apurva Baruah
Michigan Tech Publications
In recent trends, a rising demand for renewable energy has driven wind turbines to larger proportions, where lighter blade designs are often adopted to reduce the costs associated with logistics and production. This causes modern utility-scale wind turbine blades to be inherently more flexible, and their amplified aeroelastic sensitivity results in complex multi-physics reactions to variant atmospheric conditions, including dynamic patterns of aerodynamic loading at the rotor and vortex structure evolutions within the wake. In this paper, we analyze the influence of inflow variance for wind turbines with large, flexible rotors through simulations of the National Rotor Testbed (NRT) turbine, …

This work had the purpose to provoke discussion about more adaptive reservoir operations. This work created online collaborative modeling environments by using web spreadsheets (Google Sheets) during a video conference session. In each session, up to 6 collaborators immersed in water user roles. Then the collaborators consumed, saved, and traded water in response to their available water, other choices, and real-time discussion of choices. The collaboration was an alternative to prior offline or high-performance computing efforts that programmed water allocation rules to try to satisfy forecasted water demands across hydrologic scenarios. The collaboration also differed from prior efforts that excluded …

The integration of an oxide layer in metal-oxide-semiconductor high electron mobility transistors (MOSHFETs) plays a crucial role in minimizing gate leakage current and enabling wider gate voltage swings. In this study, we present the fabrication and characterization of GaN/AlGaN heterostructure field-effect transistors (HFETs) capped with a Ga₂O₃ dielectric layer. The oxide was deposited via an in-situ process within a single MOCVD reactor without vacuum interruption. Our findings demonstrate that the in-situ capped HFETs exhibit a significantly lower interface charge density of 4 × 10¹² cm⁻² compared to 1 × 10¹³ cm⁻²·eV⁻¹ observed in ex-situ grown counterparts. These results highlight the …

Study Of Indium-Silicon Co-Doped Gallium Oxide For Effective N-Type Doping, Muhammad Hassan Tahir, Nifat Jahan, Md Ghulam Zakir
Faculty Publications
We present the research efforts to achieve effective n-type doping in gallium oxide (Ga2O3), an ultrawide bandgap semiconductor, grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The application of semiconductors for power electronics requires wide and ultrawide bandgap materials that can be doped to create higher electron (n-type) or hole (p-type) densities. Ga2O3, with a bandgap of 4.9 eV, is an emerging and promising material. The bandgap of Ga2O3 is much higher than other wide bandgap material that have been adopted by or in the process of adoption by the industry for power electronics. However, the doping of Ga2O3 has some …

A Review Of Electrically Conductive Cement Concrete Pavement For Sustainable Snow-Removal And Deicing: Road Safety In Cold Regions, Mohammad Anis, Mohamed Abdel-Raheem
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Within cold U.S. regions, winter storms can cause interruptions in transportation networks, affecting transportation entities’ revenue streams. Conventional snow-removal methods on roadways efficiently remove snow and ice, yet their adverse environmental impacts further make winter maintenance more challenging. In response to these concerns, electrically conductive cement concrete (ECCC) pavement has become an effective alternative for deicing and snow melting on road surfaces. ECCC utilizes the Joule heating principles to effectively melt snow and ice by incorporating conductive elements into conventional concrete. This paper comprehensively reviews the current literature on ECCC pavement. Previous studies have diligently explored various aspects of ECCC …

Using Direct Ink Write (DIW) technology in a rapid and large-scale production requires reliable quality control for printed parts. Data streams generated during printing, such as print mechatronics, are massive and diverse which impedes extracting insights. In our study protocol approach, we developed a data-driven workflow to understand the behavior of sensor-measured X- and Y-axes positional errors with process parameters, such as print velocity and velocity control. We uncovered patterns showing that instantaneous changes in the velocity, when the build platform accelerates and decelerates, largely influence the positional errors, especially in the X-axis due to the hardware architecture. Since DIW …

Background
Nucleus replacement devices (NRDs) are not routinely used in clinic, predominantly due to the risk of device expulsion. Rigorous in vitro testing may enable failure mechanisms to be identified prior to clinical trials; however, current testing standards do not specify a particular expulsion test. Multiple methods have therefore been developed, complicating comparisons between NRD designs. Thus, this study assessed the effectiveness of four previously reported expulsion testing protocols; hula-hoop (Protocol 1), adapted hula-hoop (Protocol 2), eccentric cycling (Protocol 3), and ramp to failure (Protocol 4), applied to two NRDs, one preformed and one in situ curing.

Applications, Challenges, And Research Issues For Enabling A Uav Swarm, Jennifer Hahner
Senior Honors Theses
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms have the potential to be useful in numerous applications due to their versatility and ability to operate without human intervention. However, this promising technology still requires further investigation, research, and testing before UAV swarms can be implemented extensively. The level of human intervention needed to control the system determines the differing levels of autonomy for UAV swarms. For swarms to become more independent, efficient algorithms for task and path planning are essential.
