Adsorption-Type Aluminium-Based Direct Lithium Extraction: The Effect Of Heat, Salinity And Lithium Content, Yasaman Boroumand, Amir Razmjou

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Conventional lithium production through solar evaporation is considered a time-consuming procedure, taking a substantial 12 to 18 months with significant environmental impacts such as aquifer depletion and damaging the basin's complex hydrological system. Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) has emerged as a promising alternative for lithium extraction from brines, offering reduced environmental impact. Although adsorption-type DLE with aluminium-based adsorbents is the sole commercial technology of DLE, a debate persists concerning its Technology Readiness Level (TRL), which challenges the prevailing notion that adsorption-type DLE undeniably reaches a TRL of 9. Within this narrative, we propose that adsorption is capable of attaining its …

The Academic System Influence On Instructional Change: A Conceptual Systems Dynamics Model Of Faculty Motivation To Adopt Research-Based Instructional Strategies (Rbis), Juan M. Cruz Bohorquez, Stephanie G. Adams, Flor Angela Bravo

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Many universities have implemented initiatives to drive instructional change, yet their success has often been limited due to a lack of recognition of academia as a complex dynamic system. This paper explores how the interconnected and dynamic nature of academic systems influences faculty motivation to adopt instructional innovations, such as project-based learning (PBL) and small group collaborations (SGCs). We present a Conceptual Systems Dynamics Model (CSDM) that illustrates these interconnections, demonstrating how systemic factors create feedback loops that either reinforce or hinder faculty motivation, as well as other related factors. These loops, represented as Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs), were derived …

Investigating Small Drinking Water System Technical Capacity To Treat For Pfas, Chloe J. Yoder, Kaycie Lane

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) presents technical challenges in small systems where advanced drinking water treatment implementation is difficult. Publicly available data were used to examine technical treatment capacity for PFAS in the US, using Nebraska as a pilot. Of 1312 PWSs in Nebraska, 441 have technologies capable of removing PFAS from drinking water. Reverse osmosis was the most common treatment technology in Nebraska with 277 total systems using this technology with, 194 PWSs with RO serving populations of <= 100 people. Fifty-two PWSs had granular activated carbon, 47 had ion exchange and 62 had ultraviolet, with UV being primarily used for disinfection. We found PWSs had different technology deployment methods, several systems had “significant deficiencies” reported in management and operation evaluations, and age and previous water quality violations were not correlated to treatment evaluations. The developed methodology models utilizing publicly available data for contaminants across the US.

Approach Guardrail Transition Retrofit To Existing Buttresses & Bridge Rails, Scott Rosenbaugh, Robert W. Bielenberg, Chen Fang, Ronald K. Faller, Cody S. Stolle May 2024

Approach Guardrail Transition Retrofit To Existing Buttresses & Bridge Rails, Scott Rosenbaugh, Robert W. Bielenberg, Chen Fang, Ronald K. Faller, Cody S. Stolle

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) frequently applies roadway overlays to the surface of bridges to extend the bridge’s lifespan. To minimize repair costs, NDOT does not desire to replace or alter any bridge rails with adequate structural capacity and height. Bridge rails installed to NCHRP Report 350 or MASH standards are likely to remain in place, though their effective heights would be reduced by the overlay. This creates a problem of attaching new, 31-in. tall approach guardrail transitions (AGTs) to existing concrete bridge rails and buttressess (after an overlay) that were not designed for such connections and the resulting …

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Induction motors (IMs) must meet high reliability and safety standards in mission-critical applications, such as electric vehicles (EVs), where sensorless control strategies are fundamental. However, sensorless rotor speed estimation demands improvements to overcome filtering distortions, tuning complexities, and sensitivity to IM model mismatch. Algebraic methods offer inherent filtering capabilities and design flexibility to address these challenges without introducing additional dynamics into the control system. The objective of this paper is to provide an algebraic estimation strategy that yields an accurate rotor speed estimate for sensorless IM control. The strategy includes an algebraic estimator with single-parameter tuning and inherent filtering action. …

H2 is increasingly regarded as a decarbonized solution for the increasing energy demand. However, due to its low density, H2 cannot be easily compressed, and there is a need for materials that can store large amounts of H2. Here we tested H2 adsorption capacity of micro-polyethylene (MicroPE) – a significant environmental pollutant - at 1–70 bar and 30 °C. H2 adsorption capacity increased with increasing the adsorption pressure (from 0.06 mol/kg at 17.21 bar to 0.20 mol/kg at 68.11 bar for raw MicroPE). MicroPE activated with aqueous NaOH significantly changed H2 adsorption under the same operating conditions. H2 adsorption increased …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Quantifying the interlinked behaviour of the soil microbiome, fluid flow, multi-component transport and partitioning, and biodegradation is key to characterising vapour risks and natural source zone depletion (NSZD) of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) petroleum hydrocarbons. Critical to vapour transport and NSZD is transport of gases through the vadose zone (oxygen from the atmosphere, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), methane and carbon dioxide from the zone of LNAPL biodegradation). Volatilisation of VOCs from LNAPL, aerobic biodegradation, methanogenesis and heat production all generate gas pressure changes that may lead to enhanced gas fluxes apart from diffusion. Despite the importance of the gaseous …

Ensuring Resilience Against Stealthy Attacks On Cyber-Physical Systems, Paul Griffioen, Bruce H. Krogh, Bruno Sinopoli

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This article provides a tool for analyzing mechanisms that aim to achieve resilience against stealthy, or undetectable, attacks on cyber-physical systems. We consider attackers who are able to corrupt all of the inputs and outputs of the system. To counter such attackers, a response scheme must be implemented that keeps the attacker from corrupting the inputs and outputs of the system for certain periods of time. To aid in the design of such a response scheme, our tool provides sufficient lengths for these periods of time in order to ensure safety with a particular probability. We provide an upper bound …

The Mechanism By Which Thermal Coupling Leads To An Asymptotic Maldistribution Stability Boundary For Flow Boiling In Parallel Microchannels, Md Emadur Rahman, Justin A. Weibel

CTRC Research Publications

Phase change heat transfer processes are attractive for the efficient thermal management of advanced semiconductor devices, with flow boiling in parallel microchannel heat sinks being one promising solution. However, there are several implementation challenges associated with two-phase flow in parallel microchannels, particularly flow maldistribution, which can adversely affect performance and reliability. Two-phase flow models can be useful in predicting and understanding the instability mechanisms that leads to maldistribution, such that parametric performance trends and safe regions of operation can be identified. Channel-to-channel thermal coupling has been shown to alleviate maldistribution, but it is not yet understood why this effect is …
