Disturbance-Rejection Control For Unbalanced Operation Of Microgrids: Invariant-Set Approach, Ehab Bayoumi
Disturbance-Rejection Control For Unbalanced Operation Of Microgrids: Invariant-Set Approach, Ehab Bayoumi
Mechanical Engineering
In microgrids, voltage imbalance control is crucial to preserving the required level of power quality. The article presents a tracker design that mitigates the unbalance in the microgrids. The proposed microgrid model includes positive and negative sequences, whereby the positive sequences are controlled, and the negative sequence is treated as an external disturbance (whose effect must be attenuated). The uncertainty in the external disturbance is modelled in the norm-bounded form. The suggested control is based on attracting (driving) the state trajectory into a small region, including the origin (attracting ellipsoid-set). The effect of the negative sequence components is attenuated by …

This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing the finite element method (FEM)-based conductive heat transfer (CHT) analysis simulation to determine temperature gradients and solidification rates at the solid–liquid interface during laser beam oscillation welding. By comparing experimental observations with FEM-based CHT analysis, the underlying microstructural evolution and grain formation during welding were examined. FEM-based CHT enables the calculation of temperature gradients (G) and solidification rates (R), offering insights into the formation of equiaxed structures, which are crucial for suppressing hot cracking. Columnar-to-equiaxed structure transition thresholds, such as G/R and G3/R, accurately predict …

Wound closure in surgeries is traditionally achieved using invasive methods such as sutures and staples. Adhesion-based wound closure methods such as tissue adhesives, sealants, and hemostats are slowly replacing these methods due to their ease of application. Although several chemistries have been developed and used commercially for wound closure, there is still a need for better tissue adhesives from the point of view of toxicity, wet-adhesion strength, and long-term bonding. Catechol chemistry has shown great promise in developing wet-set adhesives that meet these criteria. Herein, we have studied the biocompatibility of a catechol-based copolymer adhesive, poly([dopamine methacrylamide]-co-[methyl methacrylate]-co-[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl …

The Growth Of Ethanol In Brazil: Sugarcane, Corn, And A Few Other Things, Fabio Mattos
Cornhusker Economics
Although we can expect more ethanol produced from corn in the coming years, it is unclear whether it will keep expanding at the same pace as in recent years or how much it will contribute to total ethanol production.
One point to keep an eye on is the typical dynamics of markets. If supply and demand conditions and price movements make corn-ethanol more profitable, ethanol plants in Brazil will keep increasing their production. If it makes more economic sense to produce corn-ethanol (as it happened recently), they will use more corn to produce ethanol.
Supply and demand conditions for ethanol, …

Hydrologic nitrogen in ecosystems can significantly impact water quality. Excessive nitrogen, often originating from agricultural runoff, wastewater discharge, and industrial activities, can lead to eutrophication – the over-enrichment of water bodies with nutrients, resulting in excessive algal growth and depleted oxygen levels. This study aims to use geospatial analytics to identify areas in Ohio that are more susceptible to high nitrogen levels due to their topographic characteristics.
Terrain Ruggedness Index (TRI) and Terrain Position Index (TPI) are two key metrics derived from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) that can help characterize the landscape. TRI measures the variability in elevation of adjacent …

Point-of-use (POU) water disinfection technologies can be adopted to provide access to safe drinking water by treating water at the household level; however, navigating various POU disinfection technologies can be difficult. While numerous conventional POU devices exist, emerging technologies using novel materials or advanced processes have been under development and claim to be of lower cost with higher treatment capacity. However, it is unclear if these claims are substantiated and how novel technologies compare to conventional ones in terms of cost and environmental impacts when providing the same service (i.e., achieving a necessary level of disinfection for safe drinking water). …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Due to its widespread applications, human action recognition is one of the most widely studied research problems in Computer Vision. Recent studies have shown that addressing it using multimodal data leads to superior performance as compared to relying on a single data modality. During the adoption of deep learning for visual modelling in the past decade, action recognition approaches have mainly relied on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). However, the recent rise of Transformers in visual modelling is now also causing a paradigm shift for the action recognition task. This survey captures this transition while focusing on Multimodal Human Action Recognition …

The timely detection of underground natural gas (NG) leaks in pipeline transmission systems presents a promising opportunity for reducing the potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. However, existing techniques face notable limitations for prompt detection. This study explores the utility of Vegetation Indicators (VIs) to reflect vegetation health deterioration, thereby representing leak-induced stress. Despite the acknowledged potential of VIs, their sensitivity and separability remain understudied. In this study, we employed ground vegetation as biosensors for detecting methane emissions from underground pipelines. Hyperspectral imaging from vegetation was collected weekly at both plant and leaf scales over two months to facilitate stress detection …

Fundamental Limits In Measuring The Anisotropic Rotational Diffusion Of Single Molecules, Weiyan Zhou, Tingting Wu, Matthew D. Lew
Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations
Many biophysical techniques, such as single-molecule fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, Förster resonance energy transfer, and fluorescence anisotropy, measure the translation and rotation of biomolecules to quantify molecular processes at the nanoscale. These methods often simplify data analysis by assuming isotropic rotational diffusion, e.g., that molecules wobble within a circular cone. This simplification ignores the anisotropy present in many biological contexts that may cause molecules to exhibit different degrees of diffusion in different directions. Here, we loosen this assumption and establish a theoretical framework for describing and measuring anisotropic rotational diffusion using fluorescence imaging. We show that anisotropic wobble is directly quantified …

One of the less explored approaches to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in Computer Science (CS) is through changes to the curriculum. Despite sporadic work on the adoption of Culturally Responsive Computing (CRC) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), the inclusion of equity-minded courses, or modifications on specific elements of the curriculum such as introductory programming courses, there has never been a wide exploration or adoption of a successful equity-minded undergraduate CS curriculum. In this work, we explore undergraduate CS curricula, with a special focus on upper division, lower division, and service courses (courses offered to non-CS students). For …

Electrospun drug-eluting fibers have demonstrated potentials in topical drug delivery applications, where drug releases can be modulated by polymer fiber compositions. In this study, blend fibers of polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) at various compositions were electrospun from 10 wt% of polymer solutions to encapsulate a model drug of ibuprofen (IBP). The results showed that the average polymer solution viscosities determined the electrospinning parameters and the resulting average fiber diameters. Increasing PEO contents in the blend PCL/PEO fibers decreased the average elastic moduli, the average tensile strength, and the average fracture strains, where IBP exhibited a plasticizing effect in …

Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is an ultra–high vacuum crystal growth technique for the synthesis of high–purity materials. MBE allows for controlled deposition to the precision of a single atomic layer.
Understanding the optimal synthesis conditions for MBE can enhance experiment design and accelerate the discovery of new materials.
In this study, we apply materials informatics – investigating the utility of both quantum and conventional machine learning algorithms – to a decade’s worth of plasma–assisted MBE (PAMBE) data of GaN and InN. The goal is to investigate the relationships between PAMBE growth conditions and figures of merit for semiconductor crystals.
