Data drives nearly every aspect of research today, from the earliest stages of problem definition to the final dissemination of results. Undergraduate students—often at the beginning of their research journeys—are increasingly working with complex, data-intensive projects. Yet many enter these environments without sufficient training in how to manage, share, and use data responsibly. They may know how to run code or analyze a dataset, but questions of ethics, reproducibility, preservation, and stewardship are rarely an explicit part of this preparation. To address this gap, our interdisciplinary research team at Purdue University launched a multi-year, NSF-funded project entitled Prioritizing Data Life …

Biomechanical modeling of the human trunk is crucial for understanding spinal mechanics and its role in ergonomics and clinical interventions. Traditional models have been limited by only considering the passive structures of the spine in finite element (FE) models or incorporating active muscular components in multi-body musculoskeletal (MS) models with an oversimplified spine. To address those limitations, we developed a subject-specific coupled FE-MS model of the trunk and explored its applications in ergonomics and surgical interventions. A parametric detailed FE model was constructed, integrated with a muscle architecture, and individualized based on existing datasets. Our comprehensive validation encompassed tissue-level responses, …

Neurotensin (NTS), a small neuropeptide, was recently established as a key paracrine mediator of ovulation. NTS mRNA is highly expressed by granulosa cells in response to the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge, and multiple NTS receptors are expressed by cells of the ovulatory follicle. To identify the role of NTS receptors NTSR1 and SORT1 in ovulation in vivo, the dominant follicle of cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) was injected with either vehicle control, the general NTS receptor antagonist SR142948, the NTSR1-selective antagonist SR48692, or the SORT1-selective antagonist AF38469. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) was then administered to initiate ovulatory events. …

To achieve net-zero targets in many counties, renewable energy generators (REGs) are integrated with grids where less fault current is produced compared to synchronous generators. Accordingly, fault level availability, known as ‘system strength’, is reduced at point of coupling (POC) buses. A minimum system strength level is crucial for REGs to accurately detect and ride-through faults. To maintain adequate system strength in renewable energy-based weak grids, researchers and engineers have recommended supplementary devices, such as synchronous condensers (SynCons) or static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs), to provide the required fault-current. Because SynCons and STATCOMs are costly devices, their optimal sizes and placement …

Abstract: Clean, inexpensive, and renewable energy sources with zero adverse environmental impact are essential for long-term sustainability. Implementing waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies has been suggested to improve solid waste management and promote the development of clean and sustainable urban environments. This involves the retrieval of waste materials and their conversion to electricity. By 2050, the global rate of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) production is anticipated to rise to 2.01 billion tonnes annually. This study evaluated various WtE technologies that have been developed to date. These technologies can be categorized into three groups: thermochemical methods (incineration, pyrolysis, and gasification), biochemical methods (anaerobic …

Inverted perovskite solar cells are one of the most promising technologies for the next generation of photovoltaics, due to excellent stability and a relatively simple fabrication process. Nevertheless, attaining high efficiency remains a challenge in integrating appropriate materials for HTL and an absorber layer. This work focuses on SCAPS-1D simulations to optimize the design of inverted PSCs using NiO as the HTL and a mixed-cation perovskite, MA₀.₄FA₀.₆PbI₃, as an absorber. By employing a controlled variable method, the thickness of the absorber layer was optimized within the range of 300 nm to 900 nm. The optimal performance was achieved when the …
