This study evaluates the ability of large language models (LLMs) to map biomedical ontology terms to their corresponding ontology IDs across the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO), Gene Ontology (GO), and UniProtKB terminologies. Using counts of ontology IDs in the PubMed Central (PMC) dataset as a surrogate for their prevalence in the biomedical literature, we examined the relationship between ontology ID prevalence and mapping accuracy. Results indicate that ontology ID prevalence strongly predicts accurate mapping of HPO terms to HPO IDs, GO terms to GO IDs, and protein names to UniProtKB accession numbers. Higher prevalence of ontology IDs in the biomedical …

In this paper, a multiphase high step-up interleaved converter is introduced, which ensures low-input current ripple, low-component currents, and voltage stresses. The proposed circuit guarantees ZVS operation for power switches and ZCS operation for power diodes, which significantly reduce converter switching losses and EMI emission and improve its efficiency. Therefore, its passive components volume can be reduced by using high switching frequencies. In addition, the interleaved technique reduces input current ripple and input filter volume and provides high-power density. High-voltage gain and low-voltage stresses on the components are also achieved due to the integration of the converter structure with the …

Online Adaptive Optimal Tracking Control Of Uncertain Strict Feedback Discrete-Time Systems With Hardware Verification Using A Quadrotor Uav, Maxwell Geiger, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This article considers the infinite time horizon optimal tracking control problem for discrete time (DT) partially uncertain strict feedback systems with application to quadrotor UAVs. First, the strict feedback DT system is transformed into an equivalent affine nonlinear DT system in terms of tracking error dynamics. The optimal tracking control problem is solved using an augmented system approach, where a horizon of future reference trajectory points are used in the augmented state, as compared to using a single point. The internal dynamics of the original nonlinear strict feedback system and the transformed affine system in terms of error dynamics are …

Improved Optimal Tracking Of Uncertain Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems Using Experience Replay, Maxwell Geiger, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper addresses the infinite horizon optimal tracking control problem for partially uncertain control-affine nonlinear discrete-time (DT) systems, where the control input dynamics are known. Multi-layer critic and actor neural networks (MNNs) are utilized for online estimation of the infinite horizon value function and optimal control input. The NN weights are tuned online using a direct temporal difference error (TDE)-driven learning approach, which modifies the singular values of the gradient with respect to the NN weights to accelerate their convergence. The critic NN uses a novel experience replay technique to improve sample efficiency without introducing biased TDEs and guarantee the …

Digital twins are meant to revolutionize the manufacturing industry by enabling advanced condition monitoring and predictive maintenance processes. However, disruptions within the manufacturing process, such as sensor malfunctions or connectivity issues are inevitable and will cripple these advanced analysis methods if not properly addressed. Therefore, efficient data management and analysis practices are key to advancing this technology. This work examines the impact of missing data imputation on model parameter estimation, a crucial task in developing models for digital twins. We theoretically derive the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for a DC signal with an unknown scalar parameter in the presence of …

frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) are periodic arrays of conductive elements or apertures that reflect and/or transmit incident electromagnetic energy. Their response depends on parameters, such as element shape, unit cell dimensions, dielectric properties, and the local environment, making them suitable for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. This article presents a dual-parameter FSS-based sensor design capable of measuring small-scale uni-directional longitudinal strain (0%–0.5%) and temperature (23 ◦C–223 ◦C). The sensor integrates two-unit cells: 1) a patch-based cell on a thin substrate for strain sensing, offering enhanced strain transfer and superior sensitivity (~16–18 MHz/0.1%) and 2) a loop-based cell with a temperature-sensitive …

High-precision dynamic sensing is critical in fields, such as industrial automation, structural health monitoring, and environmental sensing, where real-time responses to minuscule changes can prevent system failures or optimize performance. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate a phase-variation coaxial cable resonator (CCR) as a highly sensitive sensor for dynamic sensing applications. As a proof of concept, a prototype device based on a custom-designed CCR is thoroughly investigated for dynamic displacement measurements, as displacement is a fundamental quantity essential to numerous applications. The sensor consists of two components: a static CCR device and a movable conducting plate. As the conducting …

This paper identifies and studies five match-tracking (MT) methods in the adaptive resonance theory (ART) literature and conducts a detailed comparative analysis of these in ARTMAP applications. We focus on model performance for each MT method with respect to time and space efficiency as well as classification accuracy. Experimental results indicate that one MT variant, used in ARTMAP applications for the first time in this work, provides significant improvements in computational efficiency: depending on the ARTMAP variant, it was able to achieve up to one order of magnitude reduction in both time and space requirements, albeit with a compromise in …

Displacement is a pivotal physical parameter, and advancements in displacement sensor technology have enabled the creation of a diverse array of physical and mechanical sensors through seamless integration with mechanical transducers. In this study, we introduce a displacement sensing technique leveraging an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) assisted microwave photonic filter. By translating displacement-induced variations in the EFPI's optical reflection into peak frequency shifts within its frequency response, we achieve large-dynamic-range displacement measurements with outstanding signal quality and demodulation ease. Proof-of-concept demonstrations showcase a substantial 5 mm range with a remarkable sensitivity of 1.148 GHz/mm, achieved using a basic single-mode fiber-based …

Due to the increased popularity of additive manufacturing (AM) and availability of electrically conductive filaments, the potential for using AM to fabricate high frequency resonant structures has been realized. As these structures require specific operating conditions to provide the desired resonant response (such as substrate/superstrate material, operating frequency, polarization, etc.), print quality validation through an assessment of the resonant response can be difficult to accomplish. To this end, active microwave thermography (AMT) is proposed as an alternative technique to assess and validate an AM resonant structure. Two AM resonant structures were manufactured using fused deposition modeling (FDM) and the resonant …

A photonic crystal fiber–surface plasmon resonance (PCF-SPR)-based refractive index (RI) sensor with a novel design is presented in this paper. This sensor detects the anomalies in the sample analyte by detecting the change in its RI. Silver (Ag) is used as a plasmonic material with a unique terracotta structure to sense the RI variations in the surrounding medium, also called an analyte or sample. A thin layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) measuring 10 nm is applied on top of the plasmonic material to prevent the oxidation of silver. The designed sensor detected a good range of analyte RI from 1.31 …

This study delves into the modeling of a transformer in the frequency range of 100 KHz to 30 MHZ. The coupling coefficient was considered as a function of leakage and self-inductance and incorporated in the optimization process of transformer modeling in the proposed method. The equivalent circuit focused on the critical aspects of leakage inductance, parasitic capacitance, and winding effects. At first, the winding effect of an air-core inductor over wide frequency range with both single-layer and double-layer windings was shown. Then an equivalent circuit was proposed to model a transformer over this frequency range. The comparison between the measured …

Determining locations and components in a system responsible for radiated coupling is challenging. Methods, such as near field injection susceptibility scanning or direct power injection, can only find locations and frequencies where a component is sensitive to the near field or to an injected signal but cannot deduce if the component is well coupled to the far-field. In this paper, a method to experimentally determine the levels of radiated coupling within a target system is proposed. A near-field differential loop probe is scanned over the target device while measuring the radiated energy in a stirred-mode tent. By sweeping the near …

The two-port shunt configuration is often heralded as the gold standard for low-impedance measurements. However, this measurement method is not without its own issues. The shunt configuration inherently creates a ground loop between the measurement device's reference plane and the reference of the device under test (DUT). Additionally, probes often must be oriented in such a way that allows inductive coupling to occur. This work uses microprobes to measure the shunt impedance of a non-ideal short to explore the limitations of this measurement method in terms of both frequency and impedance. It highlights the importance of ground loop isolation and …

Radiated emissions from the noise-generating components in modern electronic devices are a significant concern for both electromagnetic interference and RF interference. Shielding cans are commonly used to suppress emissions from noise sources, but accurate shielding effectiveness evaluation requires a clean, well-defined radiation source that can reliably mimic real emissions for repeatable measurements. Slot-backed microstrip antennas provide a practical alternative to loop antennas, offering zero height, low parasitic radiation, and seamless printed circuit board integration. This article proposes an analytical model for estimating the magnetic dipole moment of slot-backed microstrip structures. The model captures both the discontinuity effects and radiated characteristics …

Structural Observability (SO) and Structural Monitorability (SM) are structural properties utilized to determine the state and fault-free operation of components, respectively, in a bond graph (BG) model. BGs enable qualitative system analysis, evaluating whether existing sets of sensors and actuators ensure Structural Observability (SO) and Structural Controllability (SC) without knowledge of parametric values. Furthermore, the analysis determines whether there are sufficient sensors available to identify component faults accurately. This work provides a framework for automated sensor placement in a multi-domain physical system while analyzing the SO and SM properties. The MATLAB Structural Analysis Toolbox (MATSAT) conducts sensor placement in a …

The Electron-Ion Collider at BNL requires several crabbing systems that will be operating at 197 MHz and 394 MHz to compensate for the loss of luminosity due to the large crossing angle of the colliding beams. Two 197 MHz crab cavity cryomodules containing two cavities each will be installed in the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) at the IP6 interaction region. Due to its large size compared to previously developed crabbing cavities, the 197 MHz crabbing cavity system was identified as one of the critical rf systems in the EIC. Therefore, a cavity has been designed including the ancillaries, and is …

This study investigates the quantum efficiency (QE) and operational lifetime of a negative electron affinity GaAs truncated nanocone array (TNCA) photocathode benchmarked against a conventional flat GaAs photocathode under varying activation temperatures. The TNCA structure demonstrated a QE of up to 13.6% at 590 nm with room temperature (RT) activation—approximately 1.5 times higher than its flat counterpart. This enhancement is due to Mie resonance effects within the nanostructure, as confirmed by finite-difference time-domain simulations. Moreover, the TNCA photocathode exhibits significantly extended charge lifetime, with enhancement factors of ∼6.1 and ∼19.8 under RT and 50 °C activations, respectively. These gains are …

In this study, we systematically design and simulate a series of GaAs-based superlattice configurations aimed at enhancing heavy-hole–light-hole band splitting while simultaneously optimizing band alignment to reduce the conduction band barrier, thereby facilitating efficient electron transport. These combined effects are crucial for achieving high electron spin polarization and high quantum efficiency, the two key performance metrics of next-generation spin-polarized electron sources. We investigated three types of superlattice architectures: (1) compressively strained GaAs wells on GaInP barriers, yielding a maximum band splitting of 140 meV, (2) lattice-matched GaAs/GaInP structures, resulting in the maximum band splitting of 75 meV, and (3) tensile …

Wearable sensors are increasingly being used as biosensors for health monitoring. Current wearable devices are large, heavy, invasive, skin irritants, or not continuous. Miniaturization was chosen to address these issues, using a femtosecond laser-conversion technique to fabricate miniaturized laser-induced graphene (LIG) sensor arrays on and encapsulated within a polyimide substrate. The femtosecond laser-converted conductive traces can have a size of 20 to 2 μm compared to the traditionally larger CO2 laser dimensions of around 300 to 100 μm. This marks a 93-98% decrease in trace size when using a femtosecond laser. This miniaturization allows for the ability to process temperature, …

This study focuses on modeling a rigid pavement slab on expansive soil in extreme climates to understand the interaction between weather, pavement, and soil. Lightweight superstructures such as pavements are particularly prone to damage due to the differential settlement of expansive soils. In the context of climate change, the occurrence of severe droughts followed by intense rainfall has risen, causing severe impacts on crack initiation and development, and thus infiltration patterns in the structures built on expansive soils. Pavements are typically designed for a limited lifespan, and early failure may occur if climate change is not considered during design. This …
