Application Of Digital Core Analysis To Improve Reservoir Characterisation And Modelling: The Otway Formation As A Case Study, Masoud Aslannezhad, Mohammad Sayyafzadeh, David Tang, Stefan Iglauer, Alireza Keshavarz
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Conventional reservoir models of heterogeneous reservoirs do not include micro-scale heterogeneity due to the resolution limitations of widely used well logs and core plug data. This leads to a lack of precision in the characterization of the reservoir. The reservoir quality of the thin sandstone layers in heterogeneous reservoir are critical factors for CO2 sequestration. The integration of micro-CT images from rock samples and upscaling algorithms, enables a comprehensive understanding of reservoir properties and facilitates accurate reservoir modelling. This research aims to enhance reservoir characterization and modelling by upscaling digital core data from micro scale to field scale. By focusing …

Meso-Damage Characterization Of Chemically Corroded Rocks Under Unloading Confinement Conditions, Hao Li, Leo Pel, Zhenjiang You, David Smeulders
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Characterizing meso-damage and understanding its correlation with macroscopic mechanical responses of rocks under coupled chemical-mechanical (C-M) conditions are crucial for the stability analysis and safety design of underground constructions in chemically corrosive environments. This research proposes a model to quantify coupled C-M meso-damage of rocks, utilizing geochemical surface reaction theory, statistical mechanics, thermodynamic principles, and novel principals proposed in this study, termed Random Energy Release Rate (RERR) and Effective Chemical Damage (ECD). To achieve this goal, a multiscale experimental investigation, including Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), pH and ion chromatography analysis, triaxial compression and …

Although showing huge potential in prospering the marketplace of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs), garnet-type solid electrolytes (Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.6O12, LLZTO) are critically plagued by interface instability with Li anode and the vulnerability to Li dendrite, which are attributed to poor Li diffusion kinetic in bulk Li metal. Herein, a LixAg solid solution alloy with high Li diffusion kinetic is reported as a mixed ion- electron conductor (MIEC) alloy anode. The high Li diffusion kinetic stemming from a low eutectic point and a high mutual solubility of LixAg could reduce the Li concentration gradient in the anode, regulate Li electrochemical potential, and …

Phase Of The Seabed Frequency-Domain Reflection Coefficient: Measurements And Modeling, Charles W. Holland
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The phase of the seabed frequency-domain reflection coefficient potentially contains valuable information on the geoacoustic properties in a layered/refracting seabed. However, heretofore, the phase has not been exploited. Measurements of phase are presented in an area of thick mud at the New England Mud Patch. In addition, a model is presented along with the modeling results. While this is only a first step towards understanding the potential value of exploiting the phase, it seems clear that in some instances, the phase not only contains valuable geoacoustic information, but carries a higher information content than the magnitude.

Background: Computational modeling indicated that pathological high shear stress (HSS; 100 dyn/cm2) is generated in pulmonary arteries (PAs; 100-500 µm) in congenital heart defects causing PA hypertension (PAH) and in idiopathic PAH with occlusive vascular remodeling. Endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) is a feature of PAH. We hypothesize that HSS induces EndMT, contributing to the initiation and progression of PAH.
Methods: We used the Ibidi perfusion system to determine whether HSS applied to human PA endothelial cells (ECs) induces EndMT when compared with physiological laminar shear stress (15 dyn/cm2). The mechanism was investigated and targeted to prevent PAH in a mouse with …

Addition of Mg–Nb oxides (e.g. MgNb2O6, Mg4Nb2O9, and Mg3Nb6O11) ameliorates H2 absorption/desorption kinetics of MgH2 as demonstrated in the current article. H2 desorption and absorption rates of the ball-milled MgH2 are evidently temperature-dependent, which points out that the prior rate increases with increasing temperature (593–673 K) and vice versa. Among the tested samples, MgH2 with Mg3Nb6O11 nanoparticles showed superior performance. The Johnson–Mehl–Avrami equation was employed to construct H2 desorption curves as well as …

Connecting Developed Pressure – Preload Relationship In Ex-Vivo Beating Heart With Cellular Sarcomere Length – Tension Relationship, Lei Fan, Vahid Ziaei-Rad, Jason Bazil, Lik Chuan Lee
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The heart’s developed pressure (DP) in Langendorff heart experiments increases with preload via the Frank-Starling mechanism up to a critical transition point at which DP starts to decrease with preload. A similar behavior is found at the cellular level, where the tension developed by skinned cardiac fibers or myocytes in isometric tension test increases with sarcomere length up to a transition point beyond which, the tension decreases. This cellular-level behavior is termed myofilament length dependent activation. While these two behaviors are similar, they occur at vastly different scales. Specifically, the DP – preload and sarcomere length – tension relationships occur, …

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive subtype and disproportionately affects African American women. The development of breast cancer is highly associated with interactions between tumor cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM), and recent research suggests that cellular components of the ECM vary between racial groups. This pilot study aimed to evaluate gene expression in TNBC samples from patients who identified as African American and Caucasian using traditional statistical methods and emerging Machine Learning (ML) approaches. ML enables the analysis of complex datasets and the extraction of useful information from small datasets. We selected four regions of interest …

Dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs), characterized by a high specific surface area and abundant hydroxyl groups, offer a promising approach to enhancing the performance of amphiphilic polymers in challenging enhanced oil recovery (EOR) conditions. In this study, DMSNs were successfully synthesized, and systematically evaluated for their impact on the solution properties of a betaine amphiphilic polymer (PADC). The unique "flower-like" mesoporous structure of DMSNs provided approximately 7-fold higher surface area than conventional SiO2, facilitating enhanced polymer-nanoparticle interactions. The DMSN/PADC composite system exhibited significantly improved viscosity, salt resistance, thermal tolerance, and shear resistance compared to PADC and SiO2/PADC systems. Quantum chemical …

Development Of A Basilar Membrane-Inspired Mechanical Spectrum Analyzer Using Metastructures For Enhanced Frequency Selectivity, Shantanu H. Chavan, Vijaya Venkata Narasimha Sriram Malladi
Michigan Tech Publications
This study introduces a mechanical spectrum analyzer (MSA) inspired by the tonotopic organization of the basilar membrane (BM), designed to achieve two critical features. First, it replicates the traveling-wave behavior of the BM, characterized by energy dissipation without reflections at the boundaries. Second, it enables the physical encoding of the wave energy into distinct spectral components. Moving beyond the conventional focus on metamaterial design, this research investigates wave propagation behavior and energy dissipation within metastructures, with particular attention to how individual unit cells absorb energy. To achieve these objectives, a metastructural design methodology is employed. Experimental characterization of metastructure samples …

Hierarchical Analysis Of Us Electric Vehicle Subsidies For Carbon Emission Mitigation, Boman Su, Kang Shen, Chris Yuan
Faculty Scholarship
Electric vehicle (EV) adoptions are promoted with subsidies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ground transportation. In this paper, a hierarchical analysis is presented on the potential of greenhouse gas emission mitigation via the electric vehicle subsidy policy at state level in the US, through research of environmental and economic fundamentals of electric vehicle operations, energy consumptions, battery degradation and service life. It has been found that restructuring the federal subsidies to promote EV adoption can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the US. The reduction costs of greenhouse gas emissions vary between $1167.44/ton in Vermont to $6880.13/ton in Wyoming. …

Field-Scale Investigation Of Co2 Plume Dynamics Under Spatial Wettability Variations: Implications For Geological Co2 Storage, Haiyang Zhang, Mohamed Mahmoud, Stefan Iglauer, Muhammad Arif
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Subsurface formations typically exhibit heterogeneous wetting characteristics due to the complex pore system, mixed lithology, and prolonged contact with native fluids. This non-uniformity in spatial wettability distribution thus makes the subsurface formations exhibit more complex localized CO2/brine/rock interactions, introducing uncertainties in estimating trapping capacity and predicting CO2 plume migration. Field-scale investigation on the role of wettability in CO2 geo-storage has received limited attention, and previous studies typically assume an internal uniform wettability condition across the whole formation. However, the more realistic scenario of internal wettability spatial variations within a single formation is yet to be thoroughly examined. In this study, …

This tutorial review addresses the growing need for accessible water quality monitoring in rivers, lakes, and other surface waters. While commercial monitoring systems effectively serve water utilities and regulatory agencies, many communities lack the resources for regular water quality assessment. We present approaches for developing low-cost monitoring systems specifically designed for community-based environmental monitoring programs, citizen science initiatives, and educational applications. Through systematic analysis of 84 peer-reviewed papers on low-cost water quality monitoring, we identify key implementation approaches, common challenges, and successful design strategies. This analysis informs our tutorial recommendations and provides evidence-based guidance for system development. Specifically, we introduce …

Condition Assessment Of Bolted Connections In Steel Structures Using Deep Learning, Faezeh Jafari, Sattar Dorafshan
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Steel structure connections are prone to bolt loosening and subsequent loss of strength or stability if not inspected periodically. Use of noncontact sensing and artificial intelligence can substantially increase the safety and efficiency of these inspections; however, the existing defect detection models do not account for variability of defects in both missing and loosened bolt connections. Furthermore, the performance of available deep learning models can be substantially diminished due to the presence of background noise in images of real structures. Finding these defects could be even more difficult in highway steel structures due to the complex and continuously changing nature …

Transient Temperature Measurements In A Ballistic Impact Experiment On A Thermoplastic Composite Material, Alexander I.G. Savadelis, Bryan E. Schmidt
Faculty Scholarship
Dynamic impact tests were conducted on thermoplastic composite laminates over an impact velocity range spanning the penetration velocity threshold, 88% of the penetration velocity, and 34% of the penetration velocity of the test panels. The primary objective was to record temperature increases that could affect the material properties of the composite during an impact event, and if so, provide guidance to predictive models which may account for such temperature rises. Observations from a combination of high-speed visible light photogrammetry coupled with high-speed infrared thermography indicate that it is highly unlikely that the composite reaches the glass transition temperature of 147°C …

A new proliferation of optical instruments that can be attached to towers over or within ecosystems, or ‘proximal’ remote sensing, enables a comprehensive characterization of terrestrial ecosystem structure, function, and fluxes of energy, water, and carbon. Proximal remote sensing can bridge the gap between individual plants, site-level eddy-covariance fluxes, and airborne and spaceborne remote sensing by providing continuous data at a high-spatiotemporal resolution. Here, we review recent advances in proximal remote sensing for improving our mechanistic understanding of plant and ecosystem processes, model development, and validation of current and upcoming satellite missions. We provide current best practices for data availability …

Undergraduate computer science programs worldwide struggle to attract and retain underrepresented students for many reasons. Culture, stereotype threats, uneven gender and racial representations, lack of role models, and uncertain career prospects for minority groups are among the many reasons behind this situation. Many computer science programs are trying to change course through strategies to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), aimed at improving outreach, recruitment, admissions, and retention of underrepresented students. EDI approaches may also include modifications to the undergraduate computer science curriculum. However, if not properly planned, these modifications risk amplifying existing stereotypes rather than producing positive change [38]. …

Nature uses fibrous structures for sensing and structural functions as observed in hairs, whiskers, stereocilia, spider silks, and hagfish slime thread skeins. Here, we demonstrate multi-nozzle printing of 3D hair arrays having freeform trajectories at a very high rate, with fiber diameters as fine as 1.5 µm, continuous lengths reaching tens of centimeters, and a wide range of materials with elastic moduli from 5 MPa to 3500 MPa. This is achieved via 3D printing by rapid solvent exchange in high yield stress micro granular gel, leading to radial solidification of the extruded polymer filament at a rate of 2.33 μm/s. …

The rising environmental awareness has spurred the extensive use of green materials in electronic applications, with bio-organic materials emerging as attractive alternatives to inorganic and organic materials due to their natural biocompatibility, biodegradability, and eco-friendliness. This study showcases the natural rubber (NR) based resistive switching (RS) memory devices and how varying Sulphur concentrations (0-0.8 wt.%) in NR thin films impact the RS characteristics. The NR was formulated and processed into a thin film deposited on an indium tin oxide substrate as the bottom electrode and with an Ag film as the top electrode. The addition of Sulphur modifies the degree …

Monitoring a stockpile plays a vital role in material inventories at the State Departments of Transportation (DOTs). Various technologies, such as Total Stations (TST), Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and Global Positioning Systems, are conventionally used to obtain stockpile volumes; however, DOTs seek a faster, safer way to obtain an object’s volume with minimal workforce training. Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), coupled with visual imagery, have the potential to address these limitations; however, UAS visual has not been effectively developed to account for flight parameters in measurements, such as Ground Sampling Distance (GSD). Images of regular and irregular objects were collected …
